[Q] Hybrid ROM? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would firstly like to express my gratitude to everyone involved in making the Incredible live up to its name.
I have cycled through various ROMs, and at one point I had SkyRaider 2.5.2 Vanilla. (This is my first Android-based device, so if I use n00b terminology don't flame me to death.) The homescreen looks to be stock android, as opposed to the Sense "Themes", but I must admit, the selection of widgets is awful. I really like the HTC homescreen widgets, like the flip-clock and weather widget.
Basically put, is there a way to get the HTC Sense widgets in a vanilla flavored ROM?
I know this would require running both Sense UI and whatever would be running the stock Android home screen. I downloaded the apks and I would get an error message saying "Application not installed" when I tried to put on the HTC widgets.
(Sorry, typically I would research what exact terms I'm looking to say but I'm feeling lazy today.)
Thanks in advance!

Beautiful widgets is a good place to start. It's in the Market.

Beautiful Widgets is nice and it's really customizable. I really only wanted the Sense style flip clock with the weather, so I went with Fancy Widget.
As far as getting Sense stuff in SR Vanilla, you can do it but it takes some monkeying around with what needs to be installed in order to make other stuff work. If you're wanting Sense stuff with Vanilla styling, the best thing to do is to get a Vanilla theme. I think someone had one called tainted vanilla or something. It should lay right over the top of Sense... You'll still have the Sense launcher, but you can add another launcher app (I use ADW.Launcher) to make it feel less like Sense.

Best option if you want sense-like widgets on a Vanilla ROM is to use LauncherPro Plus and Beautiful Widgets.
That'll cover just about everything.

Poll: Sense vs NonSense

So I just want to get a feel for what peeps are using these days.
Do you Sesnse or NonSense ROM?
At first I like Sense when I bought the phone, but now I like nonSense better each day. Although, I still missed some of the widgets such as FriendStream from Sense though.
Ever since I started using Launcherpro, I don't think I can use Sense ever again. The only Sense App I miss the calendar lol.
I love the weather animation on the homescreen and most of the widgets
I like sense and the widgets, but I cannot believe that the evo didn't get the ability to have a landscape homescreen. I had been using Zen's MyTouch2 port on the hero and it has the ability to rotate the full sense homescreens.... Why they wouldn't include this for a phone that has a kickstand and is obviously going to spend time horizontal is beyond me.
Anyway, I prefer horizontal homescreen orientation for use in my car dock. I haven't had time to pull all the apps I don't want out of my Flipz build yet, but when I do I will probably switch back to Helix and delete all the sense apps and widgets...Until we get a sense build that rotates or until we get a real AOSP build. I would love to use a Cyanogen build with the 360 degree rotation built it, that is the coolest feature IMO.
I used to like Sense. Evo is my first Android phone. I thought Sense was great from watching reviews and such.
After a while, I started to get more and more into custom ROMs. I flashed the test build of Froyo on to the Evo and it was great.
I realized I never used any of the widgets except for the switches, and there are nonSense alternatives. I just like the nonSense 'feel', I guess. No real explanation, just a preference.
I loathe Sense. The rounded corners. The gimmicky widgets. I like a nice clean interface. adw.launcher is working pretty good on 2.1, but vanilla Froyo is the best.

[Q] What is Rosie? Is it just a theme?

Sorry, newb question. What does Rosie mean and why would I want to try different versions? Droid INc, SR 3.3.2, 2.15 radio, stock kernel. I've looked at screenshots of different rosie versions, but it just looks like minor appearance and launcher changes. Isn't that sort of what I get with a new rom anyhow?
Rosie, in simplest terms, is the launcher that appears at the bottom of the screen, above the home/menu/back/search buttons - opinions vary on her extent, but nominally that's who she is.
So then what's the big deal with Rosie if launcher pro makes that so easy?

If you modify Rosie, you can tweak the default Sense launcher to look the way you want, AND stilll have access to the HTC widgets.

I guess I'm still confused, as you can still change the launcher and still have access to htc widgets without modifying rosie. Is it a theme? Is is a full Sense UI replacement? I'm just not grasping it.
From all I've gathered through this community, Rosie is like a theme on steroids - HTC uses it as a key piece of branding across nearly all their devices. In addition to being the main user interface in terms of widgets, buttons, launcher, etc it also includes an number of hooks and tweaks into core Android itself designed to make the experience more friendly for non-geek users (no insult implied!).
There are two main camps when it comes to Rosie - some dislike it since it adds bulk to the simplicity of vanilla Android, while some others love it for it's prettier user experience and all its widgets. I personally am in the former camp and have learned to love AOSP vanilla.

Actually, you can't. If you change the launcher to something like Launcher Pro (which I <3), you can't use the stock HTC Widgets for FriendStream, Mail or more popularly that beautiful 4x2 Weather+Clock. Granted, if you buy Launcher Pro Plus you can get very similar social widgets, and if want that clock Beautiful Widgets is the way to go if you ditch Rosie for LPP.
Rosie, in simplest terms, is the black bar at the bottom of your homescreen. She gives you access to your app drawer, dialer and settings - and if you take her away, she takes the HTC Widgets with her. However, all other HTC Sense UI elements, such as the lockscreen or the black status bar all stay in place.
Rosie is just the launcher. She is in charge of your homescreens.
As previously mentioned, the reason people modify her is they don't want to lose the HTC Widgets for whatever reason (too cheap for LPP + BW?), but they want to have a custom look or replace the settings option with say the browser.
That clear it up?

Absolutely. Thank you! The term Rosie didn't come up on any Android glossaries I found online. You should submit your description...
On a side note, I was a devout BB user for years and I feel like a kid again learning this whole new OS from scratch. I was as deep into BB as many of you are in Android, so just making the change was a huge leap. Some people close to me think I'm obsessed with technology, but for me it's what I find interesting and fun and challenging.

HTC Flip clock on cyanogen?

I want to get cyanogen, but I LOVE the look of sense. Honestly, its the only reason I still run stock sense on my Dinc. The weather animations are just awesome.
Is there a way to get a functioning HTC flip clock on cyanogen, with weather animations and everything?

Nope, sense only
It's built into the framework

As someone who once loved the clock, seriously ditch it and come over to Cyanogen (they have bacon!).
For ~$2 you can buy Beautiful Widgets which work perfectly on Cyanogen and can be skinned to look like the HTC Clock. Get away from Stock man, there's so much more to be had.

Really? I've seen the beautiful widget clock, and its kind of gross. I love the launcher pro plus widgets, but they need launcher pro to run (I think?), and stock cyanogen launcher is more functional.

There are several dozen different skins you can download and apply. Also another good one is Fancy widget. That's pretty similar. I don't think either do the weather animations though...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

While Beautiful Widgets and Fancy Widget try to mimic sense, they are still not the same. The real sense widgets are still the best IMO.
I don't think it's necessary to "get away from stock" with the Incredible. Between TouchWiz, Blur, Sense, etc, I think Sense is BY FAR the best and the smoothest interface and framework.
With that being said, I do run CM7. But I miss Sense every day, it is a tough decision for me and I cannot just say hands down that AOSP is better than Sense. I do encourage modding, and if you like Sense, at least get a Sense based ROM.

I tried them all. They all look vastly inferior to the real thing. They all look significantly less sharp and they never get the proportions right (all look stretched).
I'm still hoping for a near identical knockoff someday.

You won't get a near identical one anytime. All the ones that looked like it had HTC come after them, telling them it had to change.

You forgot acer's liquid... which I think is the best by far. I can't stand sense anymore, it's too business-y for me. I like myn's though, that's about as far as my love for sense goes though.
There's an older version of Fancy Widget with an identical Sense look floating around the interwebs. Google it.
Also, Beautiful Widgets does do unlock animations but not quite as smooth as Sense.

Looks just like the HTC one, but doesn't do weather animations or flip animations. I'll live without that...I just like the look of that clock haha. Using it with CM7 now.
Definitely switch to CM7 and LPP. It's my setup now and I love it. I've flashed other ROMs but I honestly can't make it through the day without flashing back to gingerbread.

Look up stoney666 in the theme section. He has some kick ass clocks in there.
Not sure how I sent this??

I agree while I do love Sense and I enjoy using the Sense based ROMs, I always want to go back to gingerbread.
I think CM is the way to go if you always want the latest version of Android.
Personally, I like ADW a lot better than LP though. At least the most recent versions of ADW I really like.
Why dont you try skyraider sense 3.5...you can install a custom theme over it to look almost like stock android, and plus you get to have all the htc widgets and the htc apps...see, i have mine with skyraider sense and a a gingerbread theme
---i still prefer the beautiful widgets clock though
I use the newest Fancy Widget Pro with the H7C skin. Looks identical to sense clock!
I just compared Fancy Widgets H7C skins vs the stock sense (remember to change to flip clock) and they look pretty damn spot on. Only thing different is the weather animations were a little better on the sense, but you're just being picky if you want to complain about that.

Beautiful Widgets is one of the many ones I tried, it was a lot blurrier than Fancy Widgets 1.3

[Q] Moving programs/apps from one ROM to another

I'm a beginner, but I've been trying to read up the various posts/wikis around, so I think I have the basics down. I have root and started playing around with various Sense ROMs (because I was familiar with the default Inc ROM, whatever it's called, stock ROM or something?) but a friend has been raving about how he loves Cyanogen (albeit he has a DRIOD) so I tried it out, and liked it.
I really liked the combo weather/clock widget that is included with the HTC Sense UI though, and I was hoping I could somehow copy the .apk files over to the SD card, and then install them after flashing a non-Sense ROM. I've found a few that look promising, like weather.apk and com.htc.WeatherWidget.apk, but after copying them over, nothing would show up in the app or widget menus, so I think I'm either missing files, or it just won't work.
From the little I know, I'm guessing it's perhaps because there are some system files or calls or something specific to the Sense UI that the widget requires to run?
I saw in Titanium backup that certain apps appear to be tied to certain ROMs, for example TB won't let me install "cyanogen settings" on a non-cyanogen ROM.
Is there just a fundamental difference in the code or somewhere that will stop the weather widget from working? Or can I edit or copy enough files to get this to work? Are there replacements for the weather widget? I saw several posts about something called beautiful widgets, but I also heard that it's either no longer available, doesn't work well, or has other problems.
Less importantly, I also prefer the sense keyboard, calculator, and dialer to the cyanogen ones, can any of those be ported over? Or do they have the same problems?
You cannot use Sense widgets with launchers other than Sense. They are tightly integrated.
There's nothing wrong with BW. It's highly customizable and functional. It's definitely still in the market and definitely still being supported.
Cool, I'll go get that.
Any ideas about the calc/dialer/launcher? I don't think those count as widgets, but maybe they're integrated into Sense also.
They are integrated, with the exception of the HTC keyboard. Search for HTC_IME.
If you want your sense items, you will need to run a sense Rom =/

DialerOne
DialerOne will allow for speed dialing in an AOSP ROM.
If you used that feature w/ the Sense-based ROMs, that app is a nice way to get speed dial back. Note that it will replace whatever stock dialer is on the ROM.
Also, the only other place I know of that gives the cool clock/weather for AOSP ROMs is BeautifulWidgets - a paid app from the market.
FWIW - the HTC Flashlight does work in AOSP ROMs.
hth
Fancy Widget Pro
You can skin Fancy Widget Pro to look like the Sense Flip Clock. This is the closest thing to it.
Thanks, I guess the short answer was basically that I just need to get replacements for everything, or learn to like the AOSP versions. Did get Beautiful Widgets though, looks good.

sense vs gingerbread

I just installed the Amethyst gingerbread port... wow. It is so amazingly quick and responsive.. and some of the features are amazing.. I particularly like the music player.
but I miss the Sense experience.
so does anyone know of a *great* theme going round that offers a decent looking clock and weather widget? I'd rather avoid paying, but I will if necessary.
Install this:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ru6m0w
It's a direct copy of the HTC clock/weather widget that was removed from the Market. It was always free so I'm not breaking any rules posting this, btw
cool, thanks.
can you think of anything else worth adding to bring back that familiar feeling?
Not really, other than the Sense Live wallpaper
oh thought of something.. do you know of any htc widgets floating around on the net?
LauncherPro has some sense-like widgets but in full version only.
Sense widgets, funnily enough, only work with Sense
I really miss the 2D Sense gallery, manual focus from Sense Camera and HTC Facebook sync...
This features make me always come back to Sense (HD)...
