What are the benefits? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know if this has been asked but yes i want to know exactly what are the benefits of rooting the EVO since it has 2.2 now and so it sounds interesting and i want to try it but i want to know what i will get out of it
Also, if i root will i be able to use the HTC widgets on LauncherPro
And i saw on this article that u can tether? like use the hotspot? but would it still charge me or would it be free
What are ROMs and why would i use them?.
If so which ROMs are recommended

This has been addressed too many times. Read the forums. Search the forums. Grow a pair and go for it. Determine the benefits for yourself and stop asking everyone to do it for you when the info is so readily available.
Fail.

AFTER following that thread, after using the search button on the top right hand of the screen, if you still have questions about rooting, please feel free to ask a "specific" question.
The "benefits of rooting" cannot simply be answered in one small post. There are dozens and dozens of threads already about this, not to mention full sites dedicated to rooting and why do it.
Don't mean to flame, but if you want to get anything, you do have to do a little ground work yourself.

Guys, if you don't have something constructive to say, then keep it yourselves or report the post.

[Q] One Click Root

Hi I was wondering if there is a One Click Root, because well I'm not smart enough to do step 1-19 or whatever so is there a 1 click root for 2.1-Update 1
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
that would be a no
Just gonna throw this out there -- If there was a one click root, wouldn't it be posted in the how to root post?
Also, if there was a one click root why would an incredibly long an complex method be listed at all?
Third, wouldn't it be more appropriate to ask this in the how to root the slide post and not to create a pointless new post and clutter up the development forums?
isnt this the same guy that made the froyo demand thread lol? just ban him

I don't think the mods need to go THAT far...
Chris, seriously, you need to cease creating threads in this forum. Please use the search functionality to answer your questions as, thus far, they have all been asked before and answered as well.
There is no one-click root on this device nor will there be for the foreseeable future. And there is no Froyo rom out yet -- as soon as one is released it will be posted here or on Android Spin.
Oooooh great now people I don't even know want no part in me, greeeat
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Nobody really wants you banned, we would just like to see the clutter kept down. This phone is growing in popularity, so it would be safe to assume that, if a new and easier method to root had come along, it would have been posted, and moist definitely stickied to the top. They're wanting to see people use a little more common sense is all.
It the processing of rooting your phone is too techincal for someone then why would they want root? Just use the phone as a phone like most people do.
I would like to see people banned who obviously can't follow the rules of the forum. I would like to be able to come here and check to see if anything new and exciting is happening with ACTUAL android development, but more than half the posts(probably more than 2/3) are pointless things that are already answered elsewhere.

This thread has rattled my delicate existence so damn much! I can't breath with this lunatic posting questions! How dare they not know everything? I demand extreme punishment for ANYONE feeling their way around the forum! My life was perfect until this idiot starting asking how to do things they don't know the answer to! I refuse to be helpful or constructive! Ban him! Ban his children! Ban anyone who takes more than a post to know the ins and outs of the forum! Burn his house down! Salt the earth! No more wire hangers!
frankly i agree that users like this should at the least get a suspension and a link to the rules and search button. just too funny though that i was just arguing that xda has turned to script kiddie playground where everyone wants an easy solution that is just one-click or one button press and be done, who cares about the weeks spent on the original method lets use the simple one and give thanks to that guy.

Seriously? It took me less than a few seconds to click the link, read the question, realize that even I knew the answer, and to go back to the development directory. It didn't even occur to me to be annoyed. This guy is obviously interested in the same thing you are and is simply asking questions to get caught up to speed. At one point in time, you knew as much as this guy did. Perhaps you learn better when people berate and threaten you but normal, well adjusted people don't. Try a little patience. It works.
Also, I do agree that a link to the rules and search button is a good way to stem the tide of superfluous threads. I'm just saying people shouldn't take mistakes as acts of aggression.
yes i may have been as dumb/n00bish when i started hacking phones, but google was my best friend first, and he introduced me to xda, now google is more like the third wheel when search here doesn't work. if you cannot search you should not be allowed to post. if you cannot follow directions (steps 1-19) then you shouldn't be here. part of hacking these phones is that you have to be able to use a computer first, if you can't use a computer then you shouldn't be hacking your phone.
this is just as bad as the people that "brick" their phones and don't know how to fix it because they didn't read the sticky. clutter is what this is all about though, most of us hate that we have to sift through page after page of clutter to find the threads that matter to us.
I can get with that but I know that I will err, from time to time. Ergo, I can't expect other people to not err. (believe me, I will ask dumb questions.) Google has proved to be a relatively useless tool when it comes to learning about phone modding, except that it led me here.
When I make a dumb post and someone tells me to "Get a clue, mongoloid ****!", it doesn't make me want to get better at searching the forums, it makes me want to skin their dog.
I'm eager to learn and, since I'm new to the forum, I probably shouldn't be dictating terms, but it seems cruel to automatically ban or suspend someone who's intelligence might not lie in effectively using a search engine. He might be a cool guy with a horse **** who donates to charity.
People like you have the knowledge base. People like me have **** all. Everything I've learned has come from reading the forums and asking stupid questions. Since I am new, things might fly by me in the Q & A section because everyone's using terms that are new to me. I have yet to find a decent glossary of terms and it's not for lack of trying. I didn't even know what a radio was, a month ago. Because some people are helpful, I now know what it is, what it does, and how to put a new one on my phone.
You're one of the cool kids, you know? Be thankful you've got a grip on this and try not to sweat it when people make mistakes. In my line of work, n00bs don't even ask questions. They just see what people like me do and assume they can do it, as well. Now that's irritating.
I have some excellent grass and I'm more than willing to share if it means everyone will take it down a notch.
Oh, and you're absolutely right. It's just that reading through all of the useful and useless **** alike is a daunting task. You can't blame someone for wanting to bypass it all, once in a while, and to maybe add a little color and conversation to all of the relevant data to make the whole experience more worthwhile.

i like that idea, after a little time for my grass i understand people wanting to take shortcuts, i have been trying to come up with a better solution for root, even if it was a semi-simple batch or script with pauses and questions and directions as you go along. i love to show people how great their phone can be and some of them probably end up here as the n00b i flame for not reading or following directions
The great thing about XDA is that the Mods are very good at what they do and will not just drop the ban hammer for something as simple as asking a bad question no matter how much any member screams for it. There are checks and balances just like any other system of justice. So no need to argue or defend yourself if you are new here, from what I have seen it's actualy quite difficult to get banned and there is a proccess that must be followed before it will come to that.
I thought I asked this to be closed,....that's it I'm gonna boycot XDA and I'm switching to sricktly android sites,...goodbye and farewell, p.s. could some mod someware delete my account,. And I don't care what any of u retarted freaks that get all hufed and puffed and raged up when somone asks a random question, BYE, FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rooting 2.2?

Sorry, I am always so confused in trying to Navigate XDA. I have searched, with no luck.
Are users who previously were not rooted and installed 2.2 able to root via any method? link would be great.
I know all the previous updates are still root able via Unrevoked, but I haven't seen any news since 2.2.
thanks.
Nope.

Common theme is no one searches
My search term used "rooting froyo"
I also found TONS of threads just on the first page alone of almost every section o this forum... all asking the same question.
I guess if you can't navigate a forums search you probably wont be able to root either .... searching is pretty simple
We need a sticky to answer this question. It gets asked a lot, there's a glut of redundant threads piling up.
Why does everyone have to be a first class jerk? Ok, he didn't find a topic. If you don't live on message boards these can be very confusing to look at especially the vBulliten ones like this one is. It's hard to find things and frustrating to search. Everyone is spending so much time trying to be the cool kid that people have forgotten the simple things. If you are pissed because someone is asking the same thing, then don't enter the topic. Continue to stay in the threads that you were in to begin with, because your uber-coolness is useless anyway as you never answer the thread. I can't believe how offended that one guy was who had put in tons of links in his thread. How long did it take you to search then copy and past 4 different links? Going back and forth between screens and offering nothing useful to the topic. Those messages should be deleted, not the ones who are just asking honest questions. Call it what you want, laziness, stupidity, whatever, someone asked a question, answer it as best you can or move on.
****!
Anyway, onto my question, Froyo is a giant waste of time and energy. My battery is dying and my Evo specific piano key sounds for volume up and down have been replaced by generic Android volume sounds. How do I get my sweet piano keys back?

Actually I have rooted three Evos. One from original launch software and two after having the June update.
I am running as much customization on mine as anyone, custom rom, removed multiple system apps, replaced splash and boot, switched task bar, modified system icons, hacked swype app and lots of other stuff. Actually I am a top member on AF forums but honestly XDA is really confusing to me. I can't tell which threads are sticky, which are wiki, which are guides, shoot I can't even figure out where the regular forum is.
But thanks for your extensive help Dbag.

Thank you Foxhound. On my home forum (Androidforums) users that reply like these guys are handled with a "special touch". But I guess on XDA, or at least on this particular thread - no one gives a crap about infringement, negative comments or blatant obnoxiousness. Whatev.
Yeah stock froyo sucks. I am however enjoying my Fresh 3.1.0.1, but a couple of friends would like to have it as well which is why I posted my question to begin with.
I've been all over the web and haven't found anything yet about a successful root of 2.2. I'm sure its just a matter of time. I'm going to stop looking and just resume in a couple weeks I really only want access to the wifi tether but without paying the outrageous 30 a month that sprint wants.

Sheesh,
Ok so the wiki, its in a sticky. It says "wiki" in the title, when you get there the guides are under a section called "Guides" sometimes they call them "How to's" so watch out for that. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Usually questions go in the "Q and A" forum. Oh and in the actual thread title you might see a [Q] which means question. Also there is a post at the top of each forum that says "How to use these forums" or something close to that anyway, there is lots of info in there as to how to navigate XDA. Sorry my last post wasn't helpful in navigating xda. I hope this one helps you out a little more.
Have a great day, good luck with the 2.2 root!

the problem with asking people to seach is all the threads are more than a day old, which in terms of android news is pretty antiquated.
Make a sticky or quit *****ing about people asking the same question every day. 1 day = 1 month in development time

[POLL] The Holy Flame War is Upon Us - (D-Day) - War Briefing: Day 4

I'm sure all of you are getting sick of the flood of questions that come in and the single question and answer thread is just too long to go through to find questions let alone answer them. Hopefully we can get enough people on board to let the moderators know that this is a welcome addition. Seeing as how many phones have highest number of threads in the Q&A section, I think it is a worthy addition.
Problems:
1) Lack of moderation - the volume of posts, especially from new users is higher than the what can reasonably be moderated by the current number of moderators.
2) Relevant threads containing real information are buried by new threads (many which are off topic or not posted in the correct forum)
3) The forum is disorganized, which exacerbates the issue of new users asking duplicate, off topic, poor, misinformed questions.
4) There is an incredible lack of information for new users on usage, which creates a contentious atmosphere between new users and senior members who re-answer the same questions over and over, most of the time about HOW to use the forum and search features.
5) User modifiable resources like the wiki are unknown or obfuscated from new and long time members alike, thus rarely used. (On a side note....we should all be using the wiki to push pertinent information, valueable posts, references and guides up so that noobs (and experienced users also) can find them easier.)
Proposed Solutions:
1) Create additional subforums to help organize posts into relevant categories. (I vote for at least Q&A. MOST popular forums on XDA have this, so there is certainly precedent.)
2) Better sticky posts, with clearer titles. "Hello from your moderator." is not as clear to a new user as "[MANDATORY README]-[FORUM RULES][QUESTIONS][INSTRUCTIONS][If you don't read this you will be flamed, harrassed, possibly shanked in your sleep!]" You are reading this thread because of the title...that or you saw the DVDA postfix...you sick sick bastard...either way I win.
3) More moderators. It is far too hard for Whosdaman to constantly update sticky posts with relevant info. It is up to everyone here to get that info out so we aren't bombarded with questions that have been answered a hundred times. Wiki anyone?
4) We have a great resource in user editable wiki. There is a lot of stuff that can be done BETTER on a wiki than in a 1000 post thread, like reference material, guides, and instructions. We need to make it obvious to ALL users that the wiki exists and get people on board with updating it. Threads are a great way to hash out possible solutions and have a group discussion, but a lot of times what people need is a reference or guide and they shouldn't have to search a 1000 post thread to pull the relevant information.
5) Original posters need to update their OP when new information is revealed or when there is misinformation in a post. Having a post that's title says your flash cell is about to explode only to have to read 600 posts to find out that this information is untrue helps no one. Discussion is GREAT. Misinformation is NOT, and only fuels the confusion and duplicate thread issues.
From The Front Line:
Thanks for the outpouring of support and ideas to help get the ball rolling. Several of our ideas have been recently implemented so I am really hoping for some good news next war update.
20110109: Woot! We now have Q&A. Thanks mods and supporters!
20110109: My social experiment of double entendre "sticky posts" has 2000 views in only a couple of days. I'm not going to call this one confirmed, but if it stopped even 1 bad thread it was worth it.
20110109: We have sticky wiki in all the subforums. Now we need to add content to the wiki before people stop using it.
One Last Thing:
There are very few things we can change with regard to how many new users visit this forum, or the knowledge level of these users. The only thing we CAN do is make what they need to do as obvious as possible to these users, so that we can spend more time coding and writing relevant posts, instead of redirecting people to the search button, or frustration flaming newbies.
+1 agreed. This is ridiculous, it's a clusterf**k in these forums. Q & A is exactly what we need.

No, Q&A IS the general forum. What is needed is a sticky in the general forum with a CLEAR and concise description of how to:
root
use Odin
use clockwork
flash themes
flash roms
battery saving methods
airplane mode trick
DRM services and how to stop them
and ANYTHING else that gets asked multiple times a day. I dont know if some sort of limited moderator status can be granted, but if so it would be nice for noobnl, Daemon and a bunch of others to have said status and be able to update this sticky at any time. I am sure there are a ton of people who would be glad to do it.
Then, what is needed is a sticky called FROYO SPECULATION, where EVERY thread that deals with speculation of the coming Froyo release is moved, and all discussion of that topic is directed.

That is EXACTLY what the Wiki is for. But people either don't know about it, use it, or update it. Anyone can update the wiki. Leaving all of the cleanup to moderators isn't fair, or effective at getting stuff up quickly. There should be better indication to go to the wiki and more people need to start using it.

I agree. Or a sticky at the top of ALL of the subforums linking to the wiki. There used to be a STICKYWIKI post, but the title got changed.
I agree the wiki needs serious editing and updating, and we should all be somewhat responsible. Maybe if you flame a newbie, you have to add a paragraph, like a swear jar smoothone, get typing hahaha.. sorry... had to... but I get the feeling you dont mind.
Honestly, I wish sprint would just say screw you, no froyo. This way, people would move on, keep developing, not thinking to wait on that elusive source code... and stop *****ing. The repeat questions, etc werent that bad until that stupid 26th thing brought a bunch of new people at once, so everyone here who was already waiting and annoyed, then get bombarded with new people who heard about XDA from engadget.
BTW... wheres those two who had those super secret sources?????? Kinda quiet....
Bloggers: do not cite an XDA member, or their word they have a good source unless they show you the goods! Somehow, everyone thinks XDA really knows more than the average joe... and dont trust Sprint sales info or personnel!!!!
Sure, let's create yet ANOTHER ignored forum that the mod(s) get to monitor and spend more time on while every single new user here ignores it and the search button just to post the question anyway.
Instead of making a new forum, we need another moderator added to help manage the forum.
And make a post count minimum to START a new thread!! Too many ppl coming over straight from google and, not knowing how to use xda (or their effen owners manual) to its fullest.

Dumping questions to a Q&A forum creates less clutter for the other forums, thus relevant threads will more likely be in the first two pages.

I love that idea, but there are occasionally relevant posts from new users. I would like to think that not EVERYONE that initially comes to XDA is a moron. But I guess I'm a glass half full kind of guy.
It looks like a lot of people are in favor of it.
The Q&A forum will just be full of people asking the SAME QUESTIONS over and over and over again. Why not just create a sticky that either links to an updated wiki or better yet that lays out nicely how to do basic things with the Epic4g?

That will happen in any forum. We do need a sticky, but don't expect that to stop the noobs from asking before reading.
I see that some of the other Galaxy phones here on xda have a Q&A in addition to a general section. General is used for general discussion and Q&A is for all questions. It seems like it would be more obvious for noobs to wander into the Q&A section to ask questions and hopefully save the mods some effort while also cleaning up our little corner of this website.

Exactly my point. Also, as someone mentioned...the cycle of useless questions that cant be prevented will at least be quarantined.

What is your patience level for newbie-esque questions?

You know, newbies (like I myself am quite often) who ask dumb questions that can be easily answered with a five second google search.
Sometimes we get confused and ask questions that should be easily answered.
Sometimes we're just lazy or frustrated and ask instead of search.
Sometimes we're on our phones and searching is a PITA compared to just asking.
I get a little "short" with these questions, even though I too behave like a newb sometimes.
I try to be patient, but sometimes I come across as sarcastic in my replies.
I guess I have a low patience level then. I need to be better with my replies.
What about you?
Let's try to keep this conversation as constructive/friendly as possible. :good:
Meh, I have patience. But on this site, there's to many chiefs and not enough indians. I'm so sick and tired of people with responses like "use the search bar man" or "why don't you read the thread" those answers are just as dumb as the dumb questions and also "spam" dev threads.
I've always had the mentality that there's no such thing as a stupid question.
People have always and always will ask questions without doing searches....it will never change.
So don't be an ass when you see "stupid questions" its not hurting you in any way and just help the damn people.

I guess I'm torn. I'm a new who knows nothing about code or programing but I also realize that its a dev site. The extra noobs here help spread the devs work to more people than they would have had use their work before. The easy to find solutions questions will happen.
I realize the dumb questions happen but I do my best to realize if someone tried sincerely to find a solution.
Zelendel's off quoted post makes sense when it comes to how we are viewed when we need help.

I try to help to the best of my ability with as much patience as possible. However, if I search and find it within seconds, I may come off as a little rude, and usually start the post with "please remember to use the search bar in the future. I found the answer within seconds....." and then below that I answer their questions. =p

questions
I understand that XDA is primarily intended as a development site, but I think things often get taken too far. I have been on XDA for about 3 years since before rooting my first Android phone. This, in fact, is about my fourth post. I am still locked out from posting in the Development forums. I do read several almost daily.
I understand the need to keep the volume of BS to a minimum on those forums, but I also feel the the developers do have a need/obligation to help people that are having issues with problems that they do not have the resources to troubleshoot or understand, and to raise the level of knowledge of all forum members. They publish many great ROMS, Kernals, utilities, etc on these forums with the expectation that everyone out there, including me are their Beta testers. They obviously are looking for feedback and results that other people are having to fix bugs, update instruction and documentation, and get ideas for future enhancements.
Most of the Developers are NOT entertaining any discussion of developing on these forums anyway. They obviously are either doing their work or collaborating with others offline of the respective forums.
Aside from blatant trolling, or a complete lack of self-initiative, I believe all questions should be welcomed and answered. Maybe this needs to be in in a sub-forum under the development thread that also helps us find valid information. One Q&A thread to support all of the I747 initiatives becomes a bit too general and overwhelming.
My two cents. Thanks for the space to say it.
I don't have any tolerance..
This is a DO AT YOUR OWN RISK website
A DEVELOPMENT website.
Its OK to be informative when the other person knows exactly what they are doing.
But to walk somebody every step of the way in my point of view its unnecessary. Devs don't have any responsibility over what happens to your phone. Nor do they need to do everything possible to make your phone work. I can cook a ROM and post it in the dev thread and say "absolutely nothing works but phone calls." I have no obligation to fix anything or make anything happen. Its a piece of work I chose to develop and share with other who are experienced and know what they are doing. Most problems, I'd say 90% of them, from a "stable" ROM come from the users end. Its is a persons duty as an individual to know what you got yourself into and to figure out a way to fix it. A lot of people still don't comprehend that.
I also have no tolerance into trying to turn XDA into a "social network" If you keep in touch with other members here outside of XDA then that's cool, but this needs to stay a development site...
I hate seeing the whole "I flashed this now my phone isn't working." My answer is always the same "Good, that way you learn." We all don't use the search bar or bother to use Google. Its a bad habit, specially on this site, but we all do it. But reading an OP should be the least thing anyone should do.. Most questions that are being asked are answered in the OP. And if you don't have the time to read a couple pages into a ROM thread, you shouldn't be flashing or messing with anything at all.
Once again I'll say, this is a do at your own risk. Its exactly why you get disclaimers in the OP of a rom.No one is going to hold your hand when you brick your phone.
Read read read and if you question yourself about modifying your phone, don't do it lol phones come with an already stable firmware on them.

The devs on here DO NOT have an obligation to anyone. Many build a rom for their own use and choose to share it. Others are out to achieve the perfect rom for their own use. For this reason some entertain problems while others will not. They do not have to help you if they choose not to. Many times, the question or problem presented has been asked and answered more than once, but rather than take the time to do a search and read a little, people want to have the answer handed to them. Welcome to a place where each individual is responsible for their own actions!
For the reason of questions, that is why XDA created Q&A. The developer threads are for developing and feedback (which is at the OP's discretion to act upon), not to answer questions you have. As far as overwhelming, this is why each section in XDA has the ability to do a search within...so you can narrow down the options.

Lets help out people and be respectful.

Most of us here join the site to learn and help each other out with different issues with our phones. Most of us are new to android and coming from apple just like me or just different android devices. We all know androids are all different and rooting methods also.We ask for help cause S3 can at times be difficult to root,so some people just would like some help,So please lets help eachother out.How bout go here to this link and can root the phone or go here...Im in the Same situation on trying to root my S3 T-Mobile version. We all were noobs at one point..
Learn how to; read, follow steps and use Google.
If everyone learned how to do those three things, there really wouldn't be any need for a Q&A section and there would probably be a lot less bricks happening or IMEIs being lost.

XDA rules: http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
Rule #1 states: "Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news."
If you had followed rule #1, you would know you didn't need to post this, because posts just like yours already exist. Every once in a while, someone comes around accusing us all of being big meanie heads.
Now, if you are looking for info on rooting your phone, press the "Root Info" button on the toolbar of the main SGH-T999 forum. It has an embedded YouTube video that will explain everything. The information is readily available, you just have to look for it. If you have any specific questions or problems with this procedure, feel free to ask for help (if search didn't turn up an answer), and one of the hundreds of people that frequent these forums would be happy to help you. Well, perhaps less so now than they would have been, with being accused of being disrespectful, and all.
And read the stickied threads. They are stickied becsuse they contain important information that everyone should read. Just going through the stickies will tell you about several rooting methods, and will give you plenty of info to get well on your way without assistance.
If you have an issue with the tone someone conveys while answering a question, consider this: There are a few of us who answer tons of questions and try to help all we can. There are many times we see the same questions asked over and over and over. This tells us that you didn't bother to try finding the answers yourself and want others to do the work for you. While we do enjoy helping others, we don't intend to do everything for everyone. We prefer to help you help youself. If our answers are short and to the point, its not that we sre being rude, its because not every question warrants an in depth response.
If we are trying to be rude, you will know it.
Give us a detailed, thoughtful, well researched question, and you will receive the same in return.

Another problem that results in bricks are people being too eager before reading enough into what they are doing. You need to read until you are confident about the steps. Search the threads because someone more than likely had the same problem as you. We're not being rude, we're just trying to keep things clean, easy to navigate and lessen down the work on the mods who do a fantastic job by the way.

This phone out of the 5 I've owned is the easiest to root. I've rooted about 10 phones and only one other was easier. Like others stated its not hard to find the easy way of doing things on these forums, all stickied. That is my only reason for being blunt or direct and what some call mean, cause they're too lazy to read and do it them selves, after many others have done a lot to make things easy for users, so they don't make mistakes, or have to get flamed for asking ignorant things that are right in front of them.
People's laziness, and lack of respect have made me turn away from helping out here on xda for a while now, its just gotten to the point where its actually annoying me so I only check the forums once or twice a day now and laugh as I do it, and feel bad for the guys that are still repeating themselves over and over, continuously.

Awww man I really valued and appreciate all your help. Don't let the ignorant ones ruin it for us plzzzzz lol
I think people should also follow the must do steps before flashing anything: making a nandroid and EFA backup. That would certainly solve many problems.
