Android Froyo delayed till September
July 3rd, 2010
Froyo Android 2.2
As Android Froyo has hit some roadblocks, HTC Desire, HTC Legend and HTC Wildfire seem to be the first ones to get affected.
As per initial plans, the Froyo was to be launched on the Nexus One and then on the HTC Desire after a week. However, Froyo does not seem to hit the handsets anytime before September as Google and HTC continue to keep the issues under wraps.
It is not just the HTC handsets that will be affected by the delay because most other Android Smartphones are also awaiting the Froyo. The recently launched Samsung i900 Galaxy S and the Dell Mini 5 (Streak) are few such handsets which will have a significant impact.
HTC has been in the forefront of manufacturing stunning handsets on the Android platform and as we all know they made the Nexus One for Google too. HTC Desire is the basis for the Google Nexus One and hence the striking similarity between the two handsets is inevitable.
Google on the other hand will be under pressure to get the Android Froyo out thanks to the launch of the iPhone 4. Inspite of multiple issues in the iPhone 4, it is still a stiff competitor for the Android 2.1 Eclair.
Do you have a source for this?
Is still Q3 as mentioned before
i call BS given that the only site which google searching the first paragraph is some crappy little mobile phone site
Nothing on google indeed. Any decent source would be on there in a minute.

Haha what benefit is there for us from this?
Since there is no credible source, I won't take this serious. And September would still be Q3.
Maybe here the source with no official source ^^

Dont care.
The way its worded is implying that 2.2 in general isn't ready - which we know it isnt' true
Sounds to me like the quoted source (that is a quote isn't it) is reading a bit much into the 3rd quarter announcement. Mind you, I'd be pleasantly surprised if we see the update before September, but to call it as being delayed is going a bit far.
Also wonder what the source's source twice removed is for the expectation that the Desire was expected to get Froyo only a week after the N1. I mean, talk about speculation. Not even an optimstic developer on the inside would say "nah, we could do it in a week and I'll stake my career, no the whole company's entire reputation on it".

Did Nexus get 2.2 OTA already?
yes it did.

This clearly states that the Nexus one has not received Froyo witch is not true(!)
Why bother spreading nonsense? That no good for anyone. As stated, its quarter three that is the official info from HTC.
My edit: To spread rumours without reviewing your sources is in itself NEGATIVE(!) Good that you edited your post, but to apply scepticism to sources is NATURAL and in itself neutral (read not negative).
Please review your post and apply source criticism before you post posts containing rumours. That will spare us plenty of irritation.

Ok, well from another source Code Named S. Clause, I hear it is coming out 25th December this year.
why is everbody saying that the nexus One allready have had the update.
i have a friend that has the nexus1 and he can push the button update now but the phone keeps telling he is up-to-date.
how come that he cant update and you guys talk that the update is released.

I also talked to someone today with a Nexus one and he hasn't recieved the OTA 2.2 update.
I think its regionalised
That's why these things are called rumours.
The 23 June release nonsense had plenty of 'sources' but they were just rumours as well.
The one thing I know for certain is that HTC won't release it until they feel like releasing it....
And why do some of you guys take this so seriously? It's about an OS on a phone - not life or death.
Maybe not enough important stuff going on in your lives? Relax!
Does anyone have any news of a new handset from HTC to replace the TP2?
Now that Windows 7 is released I would be expecting HTC to release an updated top-of-the-range business handset to replace the TP2. I've had a TP2 since it came out (and every model prior to that), but it's a bit tired now (not to mention scratched to buggery!). Surely there must be a new flag-ship handset on its way?
I comtacted HTC who in their usual helpful way said "I can help with that question" and then proceded to not help me in the slightest! Their stock answer is we'll tell you when (or if) we feel like it! Obviously, this really encourages me to stay with HTC! These forums tend to be far more informed than anyone else and so maybe someone here has some news, rumours etc?

Oh come on, all companies don't disclose such information prior to official announcements.
I wouldn't expect minute details of their latest project, but since everyone knows they will be launching a Windows 7 handset, I wouldn't have though it beyond the realms of possibility for them to say we're looking for a Q4 2011 release". Every other company does this, and it not exactly a secret that a handset manufacturer will launch a new handset sometime soon!
And why would you ask something that you obviously already know?
I don't already know. If I did, I wouldn't have been asking. If they aren't going to be releasing one for another year, I'll look at buying an xperia. If they are, I'll hang on.
There are lots of rumors; according to them, they will release maybe not one but several handsets. Officially they are announced as launch partners by Microsoft. There are no official statements from HTC that their support staff can distribute though, so I don't see why you prefer to bug them instead of googling, it'd bring you better results with much less effort.
Before he left, Conflipper disclosed a bunch of previously unknown WP7 and Android HTC devices. That's on top of the Mozart, Mondrian, Spark, Gold, and Schubert that are already rumored.

I read that the HTC Gold_W will come to Sprint with WP7. The _W might be World Phone speculation. No word on CPU but I would prefer a Tegra or Tegra 2 CPU dual core CPU. World phone would be nice. I just hope HTC does not screw up the camera or video recording as usual.
One thing that gets me is the wait till the Holiday season.. I mean common, release at least early/mid November at the latest since I do not want to be waiting in line for a device while I need to get Christmas Shopping done.
(Seriously thinking of Pre-ordering/Waiting in line (if their is one) for the first Sprint based device) I really want to get my hands on one early to see the OS grow, Market it to friends, family, iUsers, and hopefully work my way into a Marketing Position for Microsoft's Mobile Marketing or HTC's Marketing Devision. Both of them really need to push Windows Phone better than any past device thus far.

No way I am switching from Sprint. I am Pretty darn sure that every carrier is onboard to provide a relase day device (and HTC has the devices for them). No ATT only crap even if they are a "Premiere Partner"
I'm not sure I'm sticking w/ HTC - I want to see what all the devices are and I don't have enough info at this time. I'd like something with a 1.3 or 1.5 GHz dual core, and a nice keyboard is a MAJOR bonus for me... so, we'll see which device has what specs, then I'll decide

Correct me if I'm wrong (cuz I'm not 100% knowledgable on "dual-core") , but you want a device that runs at 3 ghz?! No one is going to be able to provide that for you at least until Q4 of 2011. Motorola is showing off with their 2 ghz phone in Q4 2010 but 3 Gigs is just impossible...

WOW, I didn't expect that coming... Imagine an HTC Touch Pro 3 with that dual-core, but I'm still surprised at how Samsung's Hummingbird is performing twice as good as the dual-core when it comes to 2D...

Why so long for sales in the US? Why is the US three weeks behind the rest of the world in the WP7 release? Is it a network or service provider issue?

Honestly I think Microsoft is using the international launches as a sort of final beta test before the November launch in the US.
Critics here will be much more vocal about any issues than in other parts of the world, so it makes sense to iron them out before it hits US news channels.

Maybe. I just think that it is funny that MS's largest product in years is launched outside of the US first. MS is an American company. I have no issue with this, just curious as to why. I wonder if att is the cause of the delay?
When does the "rest of world" holiday shopping season start. US is considered Thanksgiving, so a November launch makes perfect sense. Get some buzz and word on the street by the time we are done eating turkey. Canada has their Thanksgiving a week before, so that makes sense as well.

In my opinion, there's no way they're going to pinpoint bugs and create patches in 3 weeks. Especially hard if these overseas users aren't as vocal, as you say. Then what, as soon as you buy your WP7 here in the US you'll be forced to update it right away? Not buying it and in fact I think this is ridiculous that a company would even think about doing that.
I'm betting it's a US carrier delay.
i went to see it before it was on sales cuz my friend works in vodafone. don't really like the feel of the HTC.. i'll be holding it off till i get other choices in brand, i don't like HTC LG and Samsung in the design of these phones.. i need a keyboard and good camera.. does anyone know if SE going to make a wp7 phone.. i'm using the x2 now and i have to say it as given me a run for my money...

Hong Kong is in the 21st launch list too, but I asked around, nobody knows anything about Windows Phone 7. I was thinking to get either the Omnia 7 or HD7.
Not a good start for WM7, All the places that are supposed to have stock do not.
And other stores are not sure when it is coming in, or have no idea about it at all.
Microsoft should be pleased with this great start.

Just out of interest are there any WM7 phones for sale in Malaysia.
after reading the news on front page, it seems that time zones start in US
too bad that small countries exist in a different dimension, because there are no services such as zune pass nor bing available
even the phones aren't available at launch time - seems like winning the market isn't really an excuse here

Also, as a Canuck, I'd love to correct you: Our Thanksgiving is the first Monday of October.

My guess is that it has to do with the supply of phones. With people saying stores not receiving stock yet would tell me there is short supply. So delaying 2 1/2 weeks gets more units in stock. Or maybe I just have hopeful thinking.
DO we know if anymore new handsets are being released with WP7 something preferably 4G for tmo or sprint
we don't know, but there may be some announcements at CES in a couple of days
I know that the Asus phone is being released pretty soon and the HTC 7 Pro on Sprint (most likely it will be 4G).

I am buying ASUS phone the day its getting released.. its by far the most professional looking WP7 so far.. maybe after Dell Venue Pro..
I regret not buying ASUS P750 every single day of my life.. I went for HP Ipaq 614C which was a miserable choice.
Can anyone tell me what model, what company this Phone is???

Its the phone they use in a lot of their marketing materials, I don't believe its real.
Omnia looks closest though.
I am guessing that they will releases the Asus phone at MWC, which isn't too far away. Oh and Toshiba is releasing a WP7 phone sometime in the future, maybe an Acer phone.
Well CES came and went and WP7 was barely a blip in the radar besides the update confirmatin coming this month. im starting to become a little dissapointed as MS, to me, is unfortunately not being aggresive enough following WP7 deployment
Yes, CES was a failure for WP7, not much news, very upsetting in my eyes, Android really showed their azz. Putting Wp7 to shame. I was expecting to see something.
what were y'all expecting to see??? The OS just released, a little early for a huge showing at CES.

The reason why there was little to no announcements on the mobile front from anyone (even the Android announcements were majority tablet based) was because MWC is just over a month away:

I kind of think tablets were the main focus. Even though AT&T and Verizon released a boatload of phones, not many phones were released for Sprint or T-Mobile and even those phones weren't so hot.
Well, last year they did unveil Windows Phone 7. I would expect something big this year.

Rumors are going around that Samsung could announce the first 4G WP7 at MWC next month. I'm not getting my hopes too high though. This is only a rumor which is based on 'hints' from a Samsung head.
http://wmpoweruser.com/samsung-hinting-at-4g-windows-phone-7-smartphone/
Besides that, I'm expecting Sprint and Verizon to have their WP7s by April and the second generation of handsets sometime between August and November.
I agree with MWC being next month where we'll get more WP news, and maybe new form factors (chassis 2 and 3?)
In the end, M$ needs to push really hard in getting the word out, I don't think much people even know about WP7 and what advantages it has over competing platforms. Once M$ can get more public awareness, will we see OEM's have more confidence in the platform, and produce more handsets.
We will see a lot more at MWC from WP7. CES is about a lot more than just phones, and is really a bad place to for a company like MS to focus on their phone platform. MWC is the proper stage to do that, and they will.
I think we see the big news being CDMA phones; and secondary to that will be the first update (either just released or to be released very soon), hints at the next update(s), and a glimpse of WP7 phones to be released this summer. Anymore, phones have about a 6 month cycle, so by summer the first release of WP7 handsets will be due for updates.

I'm not sure why people think MS will announce anything CDMA-related there. MWC is an international event and for the past number of years, almost every single phone announced there was GSM-only (i.e. requires SIM card).
MS could just drop some general info about when CDMA phones will be available, but I seriously doubt they will go into any further details and will instead launch more devices for international markets.

This coming update will provide drivers for the new snapdragon chips. The ones that are capable of 14.4 mpbs down. I am guessing we will have HSPA+ really soon.
First CTIA announcement was delayed, then later an announcement without carriers or release dates. Two weeks later and till no US carrier release information. Seems odd considering the other recent "super phone" announcements came with carrier information, release dates, and pricing. Also the usual parties have not received production review units which I'd expect by now.
Even announcing puts the brakes on product purchases of competing models. Look how many people withheld purchases of smart phones the entire quarter prior to an expected iPhone release. Why announce and hold if reducing product competition was the goal?
The only thing I can think of is to steal some of Apple's iOS 5 thunder. Show that Google's Android 4.0 is moving forward too even if it's not really ready.

I have to admit I would not have been this anxious if I did not loose my Nexus One . It's hard to survive with a 5 year old phone.

Well, Verizon did say we're getting the Galaxy Nexus "later this year"... But that's about the only US release information to date.
US carriers just released the old galaxy S II. They want to actually sell some and not have everyone wait 45 days for the newer / better device.
I think its slightly unnerving that theres quite a bit of silence from Google when they've already announced a date for Europe.
I think its because they're trying to work with carriers this time. Whereas with the Nexus S they clearly didn't try that hard. Part of that is pretty much requiring that they get VZW (thats why they made the LTE version), and the other part is trying to push it to more carriers too.
We'll see. I'm not "worried" about it, just curious.
If by next week we still don't have the LTE version labels released by the FCC, then something is curious.

If that is the reason then why announce in the first place. By announcing they are in fact causing a lot of people to wait and not buy the Galaxy S2, myself included.

Normal people don't do this. Only nerds do. You're way off base if you think any normal person knows what a "Nexus" phone is, or cares enough to hold off buying a new phone when they're ready to make a purchase.

You're not alone mate. Here in Europe we have a date but what does it mean? Is it just for the 16 GB version? If yes when does the 32GB arrive? Not a single shop here has a confirmed date when it is in store so we're in the same situation. We can just wait and search the web for infos.

Indeed. I'm constantly looking for information about the 32 GB version as I really need the space and I find it frustrating that there is no information about it. I even asked Samsung Sweden about it and they have yet to reply. They did reply to my other questions I asked them earlier about the GN but not this.
It's pathetic. Google and Samsung screwed up a chance to take the spotlight from 4s.
Carriers ***** slapped both if them and they complied.
Nothing short of bad management to have ZERO information or street dates this far after announcement. The *few weeks* bull**** stopped being believable after gingerbread.
Agreed. I'm not going to reopen any old wounds, because they might be egocentric as another member or two posted, but this is not how you do it.
I just keep looking at that original Nexus One launch and hang my head. If those people involved could only see to now? Dear god they'd be ashamed, I would think.
The more frustrating thing is Google really is so big, the only other people that can bull them into releasing info are more corrupt and more interest centric than Google itself. The actual people that will use the device day in and out, I feel there is no one to speak for our interests.
It would be nice if we could twitter Rubin himself: A number of users, with a simple message: You should be ashamed of the GN launch. #Nexus Fail

#Nexus Fail

I wouldn't be so harsh but I ordered my device and so I would like to know where it is and when I can receive it.
The only thing which probably was a bit fail is the fact that they showed it to early.

Don't forget it was meant to be announced a week or two before it actually was, so that would have been even earlier.
So far all we have had is either conflicting information, or none at all. Samsung confirmed yesterday that release in the UK would be on the 17th, and literally a matter of hours later retailers are saying this has now been pushed back to w/c 21st
They have lost quite a bit of momentum with the delays and confusion imo. My attitude has gone from "wow, I need this phone now" to "do I really need a new phone?".
I will probably still buy it though
I bet they're still wringing out bugs/issues.
The conspiracy theorist in me says there are patent issues to work out.
My guess is they will never disclose why the launch has been delayed. But I do agree, it's likely lawyers, not engineers involved in the delay.
I like to feel special. If less people have it, it makes me more special.
I had a Samsung Wave in the U-S-of-A. I felt special. Until I started hating it for being so special (Samsung store didn't work in the US).

It's pathetic. Google and Samsung screwed up a chance to take the spotlight from 4s.

you honestly think that the Galaxy Nexus would be able to take the spotlight from the iPhone 4S?
PM me so I know where to get the drugs you're on....

There's probably a lot of numbers talk going on between Google and the carriers in the USA atm.
Don't know, might be Samsung not Google. Maybe one reason they bought Motorola I bet the next Nexus will be Motorola's
