Why so long for sales in the US? Why is the US three weeks behind the rest of the world in the WP7 release? Is it a network or service provider issue?

Honestly I think Microsoft is using the international launches as a sort of final beta test before the November launch in the US.
Critics here will be much more vocal about any issues than in other parts of the world, so it makes sense to iron them out before it hits US news channels.

Maybe. I just think that it is funny that MS's largest product in years is launched outside of the US first. MS is an American company. I have no issue with this, just curious as to why. I wonder if att is the cause of the delay?
When does the "rest of world" holiday shopping season start. US is considered Thanksgiving, so a November launch makes perfect sense. Get some buzz and word on the street by the time we are done eating turkey. Canada has their Thanksgiving a week before, so that makes sense as well.

In my opinion, there's no way they're going to pinpoint bugs and create patches in 3 weeks. Especially hard if these overseas users aren't as vocal, as you say. Then what, as soon as you buy your WP7 here in the US you'll be forced to update it right away? Not buying it and in fact I think this is ridiculous that a company would even think about doing that.
I'm betting it's a US carrier delay.
i went to see it before it was on sales cuz my friend works in vodafone. don't really like the feel of the HTC.. i'll be holding it off till i get other choices in brand, i don't like HTC LG and Samsung in the design of these phones.. i need a keyboard and good camera.. does anyone know if SE going to make a wp7 phone.. i'm using the x2 now and i have to say it as given me a run for my money...
In Austria A1 (network operator) sell all three windows 7 phones + a free Xbox 360 today (21.10)
It's a nice sale but I'm very happy with my HD2 with Android on it

And O2 Germany , but it isn't online yet .
Hong Kong is in the 21st launch list too, but I asked around, nobody knows anything about Windows Phone 7. I was thinking to get either the Omnia 7 or HD7.
Not a good start for WM7, All the places that are supposed to have stock do not.
And other stores are not sure when it is coming in, or have no idea about it at all.
Microsoft should be pleased with this great start.

Just out of interest are there any WM7 phones for sale in Malaysia.
after reading the news on front page, it seems that time zones start in US
too bad that small countries exist in a different dimension, because there are no services such as zune pass nor bing available
even the phones aren't available at launch time - seems like winning the market isn't really an excuse here

Probably like others said - they're testing out the infrastructure and whatnot before the big launch in NA.
Also, as a Canuck, I'd love to correct you: Our Thanksgiving is the first Monday of October.
It's payback time...
My guess is that it has to do with the supply of phones. With people saying stores not receiving stock yet would tell me there is short supply. So delaying 2 1/2 weeks gets more units in stock. Or maybe I just have hopeful thinking.

Now we have some official information about regional availability.
In a nutshell, WP7 will support 5 languages (English, French, Italian, German and Spanish), and Marketplace will be available in 17 countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, UK and United States).
While at first I thought - fine, I'll just import one from wherever it's available, it won't work.
First of all, it will be next to useless if you speak Dutch or Russian, for example - it won't have dictionaries for auto-correction or, in the worst case, won't have the input characters necessary.
What's even worse, you won't be able to buy applications if your market isn't supported.
Big disappointment...
Disappointing low availability in the initial rush. I'd expected more of Microsoft.
Lol. You guys are way too harsh. Do you know how many carriers those markets contain? A LOT.
Rolling out an entirely new software platform and entirely new devices is not an easy process. Lighten up, they're doing an excellent job.

No, we're not.
Apple iTunes is the only marketplace that supports selling/buying applications in those regions. And same goes for music services (iTunes Music Store) versus Zune.
Google after over a year of Android still haven't launched anything in northern Europe. It's super annoying that we're left behind innovation this easy. I'd expected more of Microsoft, who have a established business selling software and services in all the European countries, to be able to launch in all these regions at the same time.

I'm not harsh, I'm disappointed because I'm left out of the party, even though I live in a country that almost 4 times as many mobile phones in use as in France, where Microsoft has over 30% market share in smartphones, where they have tons of people working at their offices including developers and localization contractors and what not, and where they have some of the biggest ISVs supplying third party applications.
So I'm frustrated, not harsh.

Google isn't a consumer oriented company, have no infrastructure or processes in most places to sell anything directly to end users, so that's understandable. But Microsoft? Come on, they're just being lazy.

Which makes Microsoft think.....and rethink its new product roll-out.
Could their not be other issues like Licensing and other laws that might make it difficult to get everything in order before a mass release is done? Just because you have access to similar products now doesn't mean it is easy to get new products to you when Laws/Procedure get in the way.

That is precisely the problem. It's the same reason that developers have to be in one of 30 or so countries because Microsoft can't pay them if they're outside of those.

All the Nordic countries speak/read/write English almost as well as their native language, so it's not a localization issue.
Legal issues is more likely the problem -- Specially when it comes to Zune, more than anything else.
But it's still disappointing, as Microsoft got large local divisions in the Nordic countries, specially Denmark (Microsoft Dynamics is developed here), so one would think they could be better than Google in this.
What I don't understand, is that Apple got both iTunes for Apps and Music available in all the European countries, so why would Microsoft be limited here with Zune?
However, it could also just be that Microsoft isn't pushing it to all countries due to simple logical issues -- there simply ain't enough phones. Nokia had same issue with the N900, which also were limited to the major countries + Finland (Nokia resides in Finland).
But is it common practice to sell stuff in english and not the local language? I really don't know but I would think they would localize it.
Zune has been interesting. Microsoft really hasn't bothered to sell it anywhere but the US. I suppose it's more of a cost/benefit thing. They just didn't care enough to take it abroad. They started that when they brought it to Xbox 360 and now they're going further with WP7.
But yea, it's going to be hard enough on them and their partners to do an effective launch in 17 countries as it is. And they're supposedly going to make their way to the Netherlands before the end of the year so that may just be it as well. Or maybe they couldn't get all the legal issues straightened out in time? At any rate, it's no small undertaking.

Well, Zune is a very difficult thing because digital rights have to be obtained for every country separately... Plus, Zune has streaming, so you have to get streaming rights as well. Sometimes a label will have an agreement with the artist that won't cover digital rights, so you'll have to negotiate these separately. That's a colossal amount of "manual" work to make an international music store - and then you get videos, too...
As nice as it would be to have Zune Pass though, I can certainly live without it, and I sincerely hope this isn't something that's holding WP7 back - they won't open Zune in many countries till doomsday.

Apart from Zune, however, I don't see any big hurdles. Translation isn't a big deal, they have a network of subcontractors that do it, and everything is in those MUI files. Marketplace is available in more than 17 countries even now, so they certainly learned how to deal with tax and legal issues by now, and it's not that difficult really. OEMs know how to sell devices there, have distributors, retail/MO partners etc. etc.
At the end of the day I don't care if they "launch" WP7 in Russia or not, all I care is that they add Russian keyboard. Adding language support is certainly not that big of anl undertaking which would sell a couple million more devices even without official launches and all that fluff.

Certainly, given that CE supports Cyrillic, Silverlight supports Cyrillic, even Zune supports Cyrillic, and Microsoft has all the dictionaries and stuff. That's a really minor thing to do to get access to a market with some 200 million active mobile phones in use I'd say...

Well, you don't need a phone to be officially available in your country to buy it, you can just buy it on the internet from wherever you like. You may not get official warranty, it won't be subsidised etc., but you can get it if you want.
Lack of official status isn't a problem with WM because you can install any keyboard you want and you can sideload applications. This isn't a problem with the iPhone because it supports tons of languages regardless of where you buy it. In the case of WP7, text autocorrection won't work, you might not get the characters you need in the software keyboard, and you won't be able to install applications, so simply importing it will be pretty much useless.

I am buying ASUS phone the day its getting released.. its by far the most professional looking WP7 so far.. maybe after Dell Venue Pro..
I regret not buying ASUS P750 every single day of my life.. I went for HP Ipaq 614C which was a miserable choice.
Can anyone tell me what model, what company this Phone is???

Its the phone they use in a lot of their marketing materials, I don't believe its real.
Omnia looks closest though.
I am guessing that they will releases the Asus phone at MWC, which isn't too far away. Oh and Toshiba is releasing a WP7 phone sometime in the future, maybe an Acer phone.
Well CES came and went and WP7 was barely a blip in the radar besides the update confirmatin coming this month. im starting to become a little dissapointed as MS, to me, is unfortunately not being aggresive enough following WP7 deployment
Yes, CES was a failure for WP7, not much news, very upsetting in my eyes, Android really showed their azz. Putting Wp7 to shame. I was expecting to see something.

Rumors are going around that Samsung could announce the first 4G WP7 at MWC next month. I'm not getting my hopes too high though. This is only a rumor which is based on 'hints' from a Samsung head.
http://wmpoweruser.com/samsung-hinting-at-4g-windows-phone-7-smartphone/
Besides that, I'm expecting Sprint and Verizon to have their WP7s by April and the second generation of handsets sometime between August and November.
I agree with MWC being next month where we'll get more WP news, and maybe new form factors (chassis 2 and 3?)
In the end, M$ needs to push really hard in getting the word out, I don't think much people even know about WP7 and what advantages it has over competing platforms. Once M$ can get more public awareness, will we see OEM's have more confidence in the platform, and produce more handsets.
We will see a lot more at MWC from WP7. CES is about a lot more than just phones, and is really a bad place to for a company like MS to focus on their phone platform. MWC is the proper stage to do that, and they will.
I think we see the big news being CDMA phones; and secondary to that will be the first update (either just released or to be released very soon), hints at the next update(s), and a glimpse of WP7 phones to be released this summer. Anymore, phones have about a 6 month cycle, so by summer the first release of WP7 handsets will be due for updates.

I'm not sure why people think MS will announce anything CDMA-related there. MWC is an international event and for the past number of years, almost every single phone announced there was GSM-only (i.e. requires SIM card).
MS could just drop some general info about when CDMA phones will be available, but I seriously doubt they will go into any further details and will instead launch more devices for international markets.

I decided to share this commentary here from my WP7 fansite http://www.L337ware.com because I wanted to see how you all felt about the subject and honestly my site doesn't get alot of traffic being a homegrown effort.
"First off I have to admit I may be a victim of my own self imposed hype. Now that I got that out of the way I can’t help being a little bit dissapointed at the Windows Phone 7 news coming out of CES 2011. For example where is the promise of new blockbuster applications such as Pandora, Skype, Hulu, and many more key fixtures available of other platforms? How bout some cool new phones to compete with the flood of amazing Android powered hardware on the way? Maybe some new XBox live features like voice support? Instead we get the somewhat creepy rantings from the queen of the butterfly cult and a lackluster list of future game titles. I don’t really need it to justify my purchase but while Microsoft was all over Kinect sales numbers they seem to shy away from talking about the market performance of their now heavily discounted Windows Phones. Honestly most people are well aware of the features of the more immediate update but talking more about the plans for the later half of the year would have giving early adopters quite a bit of comfort. I’m a pretty avid fan of Microsoft and their products but even I can’t help feeling slightly underwhelmed. While I know Microsoft is in this for the long haul and have seen many times how quickly they can refocus a brand to please it’s users I have to say that CES 2011 is not really get me excited for Windows Phone 7."

sad but true they need to pick up the pace and satisfy us, their community and costumers. Both the iOS and Android, their competitors, are growing really fast, adding a lot more for our beloved WP7 to catch up with

now that I've cooled down from the shock I can say that most of us put too much of expectation into yesterday announcement, and when it not satisfy our needs most of us (like me) felt like being cheated or thrown out

Says who ??? Out of all the specs of ALL the WP7 phones, nothing is like WOW. Really, everything on every model has been done already by another maker or platform. I don't think anyone wants a 4.5" display, unless it's a tablet, it does not fit in the pocket too well. MS needs a show stopper, a really HOT WP7 phones, they don't have one. There is nice phones don't get me wrong but, no WOW phones.
I can honestly say CES had some Android phones that were faster and nicer displays, still not WOW but, a very strong Hmmmm. If they were WP7 models, I might get a happy about them.
Still dreaming for a Verizon WP7 phone...and not the Trophy
Agreed. Wp7 still doesn't have a superphone that can compete with you-know-iWho.
i am not sure what ppl were hoping from the CES and microsoft, WP7 was just launched in Oct 2010 and we are still waiting for the first update... adding on new things to the OS before the update will be not a wise thing to do...
come on guys this is CES not Mobile world Forum, and i hope some of you were not hoping for more hardware to be launched 3 months after the initial launch of the OS and 6 devices..
i was only hoping for the update date or week only... any way MS was tight liped with the WP7 and i think they will be tight liped for the update as well...

Well I have to say, that it's probably better off to wait for the MWC in February for phone news, I will wait for that to see whether I should wait for some decent spec'd wp7 devices, or just jump on the android ship.
WP7 is impressive OS but there is no killer WP7 device on the market. Dell Venur pro is one worth buying but I don't like its portrait keyboard. I'll wait for Nokia WP7 phone later this year.

No we don't.
Awww crap! that means it won't be arriving until AFTER september 23rd... I actually thought Microsoft would release something ahead of schedule but they never like to disappoint us do they.
Today Microsoft has treated its customers like dirt, had many days to say that today was not the day of the update. It's just a shame the company can not say a release date.
Walk to complain that no sales? No one will buy an OS that only has 5 languages in the operating system.
And then to make matters worse go all happy to show TV ads to show MANGO, WTF? And to show new apps with MANGO ....
It's just a shame .... They lost a customer.

It shows the attitude of the company. The customer is the last consideration. You can't expect anything good or satisfying from a company like that. If they can't see the dissatisfaction with what customers they do have, they certainly wouldn't consider anything the customer wants.
It seems like the customer is out of the loop as far as what MS is doing...like the customer isn't even a slight thought in their minds.

They never said it was 9/15 so what made you believe it? If I say its coming 9/17, will you believe this and blame MS if they don't deliver it by then?
They don't comment on speculation and they said before that it will come this fall and we still have summer.

I explained this to like 5 people on Youtube earlier, received a lot of hate mail in reply lol people are complete idiots - they will make it widely known when it is getting released.
Microsoft is waiting for the iPhone 5 announcement to release Mango so that everyone pays attention to Windows Phone. Or will they?

I don't know what the real deal is with the Mango release date, but intentionally trying to steal attention from Apple by releasing it on the same day (or even the same week) as the iPhone 5 would be an epic mistake. WP7 is nowhere near popular (or even well-known) enough yet to compete with the cacophony of noise that the iPhone 5 will generate. It would be analogous to dropping a small stone into a pond, trying to make more waves than someone else who is dropping a 50 pound boulder.
Iphone5??? More dumbass speculation, MS never once said 9/15... Xda is getting ridiculous, I just follow some tech news sites now, and some Wp7 dev forums here from now on

I'd like to add to this. They pushed quite hard every developer, in an announcement, to update their app to Mango like NOW or sooner if possible !
The hell I will ! If you push a Mango update, you can't update your NoDo version anymore, forever ! So basically I don't even know when the new features I add will become available to the general public (surely not before 1-2 months for most customers) and at the same time if I find a bug in my current version I won't be able to fix, never again.
So you're asking me once more a leap of faith, even after you provided a disaster of update schedule the last (and only) time around ? You must be kidding me...
Playing hide and seek games and having cryptic (supposedly funny ?) posts with release dates after the mess they did with their first one... doesn't feel right.
State a fixed date, well in advance and honour it
well said my freind..
A lot of good logic in this thread.
To the poster who said "if I say it's the 17th, will you get mad at MS for not releasing it on the 17th?", that isn't what happened. EVERYONE for some reason thought it was the 15th. It wasn't just a few obsessed fans. It was engadget, wpcentral, etc. -everyone-. That was the rumor. And it would take 40 seconds to write a blog post saying otherwise.
Moronic public relations from Microsoft. Rule 1: OPEN COMMUNICATION.
If a rumor gets as substantial as the 15th one did, then you address, and dismiss it. You don't write (like someone above said) a cryptic tweet just to fuel more speculation.
all of yall must be idiots
they never said the 15th but yet yall hold them to it
even if they said go today your carrier would not be ready some still don't have nodo

Mostly the reason because everyone thought it was the 15th, is the absolute need for it to come out as soon as possible as it's too late already, the window is closing extremely fast.
The platform is freaking late and having a new major iteration of ios close at hand, contemporary to something that puts WP somewhere around a 2009 OS, well you get the picture...
But ultimately, it's just that being in this sh•••y situation, you would expect they would learn to communicate better with their public. It's not like you're Apple, you're the n.1, you've already made proselytises by the bucket who have never been disappointed by your products...again, this cryptic tweets and no updates make them look arrogant.
First CTIA announcement was delayed, then later an announcement without carriers or release dates. Two weeks later and till no US carrier release information. Seems odd considering the other recent "super phone" announcements came with carrier information, release dates, and pricing. Also the usual parties have not received production review units which I'd expect by now.
Even announcing puts the brakes on product purchases of competing models. Look how many people withheld purchases of smart phones the entire quarter prior to an expected iPhone release. Why announce and hold if reducing product competition was the goal?
The only thing I can think of is to steal some of Apple's iOS 5 thunder. Show that Google's Android 4.0 is moving forward too even if it's not really ready.
What do you think?

Even I felt it was odd that there is no official US release announcement yet. I just hope the unlocked GSM model gets released this month. I don't mind paying the full price.
I have to admit I would not have been this anxious if I did not loose my Nexus One . It's hard to survive with a 5 year old phone.

Well, Verizon did say we're getting the Galaxy Nexus "later this year"... But that's about the only US release information to date.
US carriers just released the old galaxy S II. They want to actually sell some and not have everyone wait 45 days for the newer / better device.
I think its slightly unnerving that theres quite a bit of silence from Google when they've already announced a date for Europe.
I think its because they're trying to work with carriers this time. Whereas with the Nexus S they clearly didn't try that hard. Part of that is pretty much requiring that they get VZW (thats why they made the LTE version), and the other part is trying to push it to more carriers too.
We'll see. I'm not "worried" about it, just curious.
If by next week we still don't have the LTE version labels released by the FCC, then something is curious.

If that is the reason then why announce in the first place. By announcing they are in fact causing a lot of people to wait and not buy the Galaxy S2, myself included.

Normal people don't do this. Only nerds do. You're way off base if you think any normal person knows what a "Nexus" phone is, or cares enough to hold off buying a new phone when they're ready to make a purchase.

You're not alone mate. Here in Europe we have a date but what does it mean? Is it just for the 16 GB version? If yes when does the 32GB arrive? Not a single shop here has a confirmed date when it is in store so we're in the same situation. We can just wait and search the web for infos.

Indeed. I'm constantly looking for information about the 32 GB version as I really need the space and I find it frustrating that there is no information about it. I even asked Samsung Sweden about it and they have yet to reply. They did reply to my other questions I asked them earlier about the GN but not this.
It's pathetic. Google and Samsung screwed up a chance to take the spotlight from 4s.
Carriers ***** slapped both if them and they complied.
Nothing short of bad management to have ZERO information or street dates this far after announcement. The *few weeks* bull**** stopped being believable after gingerbread.
Agreed. I'm not going to reopen any old wounds, because they might be egocentric as another member or two posted, but this is not how you do it.
I just keep looking at that original Nexus One launch and hang my head. If those people involved could only see to now? Dear god they'd be ashamed, I would think.
The more frustrating thing is Google really is so big, the only other people that can bull them into releasing info are more corrupt and more interest centric than Google itself. The actual people that will use the device day in and out, I feel there is no one to speak for our interests.
It would be nice if we could twitter Rubin himself: A number of users, with a simple message: You should be ashamed of the GN launch. #Nexus Fail

I wouldn't be so harsh but I ordered my device and so I would like to know where it is and when I can receive it.
The only thing which probably was a bit fail is the fact that they showed it to early.

Don't forget it was meant to be announced a week or two before it actually was, so that would have been even earlier.
So far all we have had is either conflicting information, or none at all. Samsung confirmed yesterday that release in the UK would be on the 17th, and literally a matter of hours later retailers are saying this has now been pushed back to w/c 21st
They have lost quite a bit of momentum with the delays and confusion imo. My attitude has gone from "wow, I need this phone now" to "do I really need a new phone?".
I will probably still buy it though
I bet they're still wringing out bugs/issues.
The conspiracy theorist in me says there are patent issues to work out.
My guess is they will never disclose why the launch has been delayed. But I do agree, it's likely lawyers, not engineers involved in the delay.
I like to feel special. If less people have it, it makes me more special.
I had a Samsung Wave in the U-S-of-A. I felt special. Until I started hating it for being so special (Samsung store didn't work in the US).

There's probably a lot of numbers talk going on between Google and the carriers in the USA atm.
Don't know, might be Samsung not Google. Maybe one reason they bought Motorola I bet the next Nexus will be Motorola's
