I'm curious if there's a decent video chat app for Android that supports the Galaxy S besides Fring?
Fring is garbage, and aside from the horrific layout and appearance shrinks the incoming/outgoing video feeds to cram as much of their buttons and borders in as possible.
The built in function isn't an option because if I want to video chat with someone in another country here in Europe, it still routes through the cell network, incurring international calling rates, which is bull****.
So any FaceTime like apps yet that function off email or some other ID?
I'm also looking for such an app, ideally supporting video calls to googletalk.
iMovicha works quite ok for me but unfortunately only uses the main cam on the back. I have not found a way to make it use the front cam.
Siproid is supposed to support video calls too but so far I have not managed to make video work.
Did anyone have success with this?
fRing is currently the best working on for SGS i9000
the skype one only does voiceIP

qik is for EVO only (for front facing camera and 2 way video call)
Fring is the only option.
you need to be on firmware JM5 or JM6
Fring works on FW - JPC as well even over 3g
works well
Well that's disappointing. Fring is garbage. The actual video pane I want to see when video chatting is shrunken and bordered with their vomit colored background and buttons.
There should be absolutely nothing on the screen during that video call other than the incoming video, a small outgoing mirror, and small controls.
I hate Apple, but Facetime is where it's at. Fring is an abomination.

then you can program an App to do just as you wish, then you can sell it and make millions!

Hence the thread and why I made it clear I was looking for something other than Fring rather than engaging in a Fring circlejerk. Apparently there are no decent video chat apps, so the wait continues. Was simply curious if there were any good alternatives yet. Fring being the least crappy =/= good.

have you asked your carried how much the rates are for just the usual video call over 3g? you know, the one where you don't need to open an app, just open the contact and click the Video Call button?
coz it's usually charged the same amount as a regular voice call...

the reason you won't see opera/firefox/chrome on wp any time soon is due to the restrictions still on the languages. wp uses VB/C#, which does not allow for C++ which a lot of these more complex programs are written in. Though OEMs have capabilities to write native code.
I am pretty satisfied for the most part with the apps on my HD7 but I do want Skydrive integration and limited multitasking for apps like LastFM.
Bing also should be updated to match the superior iPhone app.
Many things have to be improved.

1. Official Google Voice App - I know it might be a problem to intercept outgoing calls and/or using GV when you tap "Send Text" from the People Hub, but an official app from Google would probably be more fluid than what's available now. GVoice is a good solution for now, but it could use some small improvements. Who better to do that than Google?
2. I know emulators are not allowed, but I'd like to see a homebrew PSX and SNES Emulator. I'd definately pay the developer for it, Paypal maybe since Marketplace won't allow it... that's how it's done for WinMo.
3. BeyondPod

So, what do you think about it? I think it's unreal that they made in in just 8 hours! Grated, it has a few problems but overall it's extremely well done. One problem that really annoyed me was that it was working fine, then about 4 hours later it would give me complete and utter crap for answers. Now it's working again, if I was to ask "How did Jhon F Kennedy die?" I would receive a full answer provided with pictures, dates, etc. Whereas before I would receive answers such as "He was bitten by a werewolf." or "He sold his soul to Yelloweyes to let Jake live."
Anyway, what's your take on this?

agreed.
Just a silly gimmick that in reality doesnt actually work that well.
So..it's cleverbot with a speech synthesizer that can apparently do some fact querys?
Isn't the main point of Siri that it interacts with your phone and does stuff there?
I wouldn't call a text-to-speech cleverbot the same as siri or even remotely close..
8 hours doesn't matter in this case - it's simply programming speech-to-text and vice versa from the bot.
Actual interpretation and phone interaction is a completely different and much more difficult thing.

You cannot initiate a hangout in Google+ from a mobile phone at the moment. You can join an existing hangout that is in progress though.
You can also initiate a one-on-one video call with a contact in Google Talk, as I posted the screenshot above.

If you talk about video chat there a many app you can use. If you talk about 3G video call over your network it will not happen with Vanilla Android. There are some devices have it like GS2 international version and GSM evo 3d. But American phones will never happen unless the networks support it.
That's very incorrect. You can video talk using Google Talk and Google+ on any network type.

You don't know what I mean bro. I mean 3G video call witch is an option you can choose when you make a call. Example if you want to call from your android phone to a nokia n95. In Egypt for example the network support a 3G video call as an option when you make a call. When you dial the number it pops up a small screen asking which service you want to use Voice Call or Video call 3G. If you look at the international SGS2 you will see an option on the dial keypad a small tv with camera. On our SGS2 it shows voice mail. In America there is no support for this service at all, i tried it before and it doesn't work at all with T-Mobile. This a different story than Video Chat.
With Bell in Canada you can pay $5/mo to be able to video call from your mobile number (from Samsung phones that have it build in at least)
I use Tango though because it uses my cell phone number and works with everything but blackberry and video chat.
But tango required tango with the other side. I was looking for any app have to allow me use the service to call any one have diff device than android but nothing.

At$t supported video calls on the Touch Pro and Diamond II, but charged so much for it that it wasn't worth it when you could video chat over data for free.
Although what I've done on tango is muted the built in mic and just called. Video was choppy but workable. Voice was horrible. It kept picking up speaker noise and echoing it back until it was a high pitched tone. It was trying to output what I said then the microphone would pick up the speaker. We just muted Tango and called each other and used speaker phone.
Plus 1 for Android and true multitasking.

Tango is on iOS too.
I'm looking for it too.
My old Galaxy S do it natively, and i'm disapointed that the Galaxy Nexus don't.
Don't know if it's in touchwiz on Galaxy S, but i want it on my SGN !
I am in Australia and the Galaxy S2 does not have Google Talk video calls, which is why you wont see the icon for it on that app.
If you root the gs2 it is a standard addition across all custom roms.
On a side note, the Nexus has cool facewarp features, during a video call press on your face and it will open up the options, they are a lot of fun.
For your iPhone friends, they can download an app called vTok and you can video call them.
(i want to post a screen shot, so if this helps please hit thanks!)

I haven't used Skype Mobile before as I have a Desire. I will be using it when I get a HOX in May or June when there are more firmware updates.
Thanks again.
My skype is somewhat laggy... Theres a delay when someone writes a message, aswell as it spams me with the "bleep" sound when someone types, when I log in and friends etc has been talking in a conversation.
I found it ok. The other side said the picture was clear and quality was ok, but had a few issues with switching cameras. The person I was talking to went off the main screen and I couldn't get them back.

I am getting pretty terrible Skype call quality. REcieving is fine, but the video i send is washed out. Actually all photos/video from the front camera is washed out, so i don't think it is a skype issue.
This is a screenshot from my laptop calling myself via my HTC One X
No problem here, Skype works great on my HTC One X.
no problem with Skype on my phone. i just wish there was a way to turn off the sounds when receiving messages. no lags as i receive messages simultaneously on my laptop and phone at the same time.
does anyone know how to send a file on a group conversation? can't seem to find it on the menu.
I don't find Skype brilliant on my hox to be honest. Dare I say it...but it's a much worse experience than my old iPhone 4. The battery drains very quickly, phone gets very hot and I also have camera issues. It frequently shows my camera as upside down, even though the other person sees me fine. It's not a huge problem, but when aiming the camera it can be a pain ha. On a long call to family this evening twice it made the call sound as though it was ringing despite being mid call. Then the program basically crashed the whole device and only a reboot sorted it.
To be fair, that's the only time it happened and it was during a long call. Oh, and it also told me that my wall charger couldn't charge fast enough when making a video call, so I had to resort to audio only so I could turn the screen off.
One last problem was that my parents frequently said how bad my video looked, when it's never once been said on my old phone.
Well there's a negative post
Are the bars on the sides due to choosing 4:3 camera in the camera app? I used to have 16:9 and don't remember those borders, but I could be wrong.
Oh, and audio was too low despite full volume ha. It's usable though, just not perfect
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Skype works 100% perfectly for me. No lag, no problems switching cameras back and forth, no issues whatsoever with the screen rotation or fit. Its as flawless as on my PC or Mac.
Battery drain and heat are a problem with almost every app on the HOX, so that's not a Skype issue. You have the monkeys at HTC to thank for inferior engineering and programming.
Skype is mostly fine for me, the only problem I have had with it is that I keep getting a notification saying:
New messages in X conversations
Last message: X

and I find it so annoying because it makes the notification bar look cluttered, and even after tapping it and 'mark all as read' it still shows!

Everyone in the S3 section is awesome and helpful, I found that out last night!
I have another question, hopefully it is an easy one. I just don't know exactly how to go about doing this.
Basically I use a program on the S3, that records everything except call recording. The Rom that is on the phone has a built in call recorder. When the program logs a call for XX minutes or however long whenever I try and listen its all just static. I assume I just need to figure out what I need to delete in the Rom for my program to be able to use it.
I use "Mspy". It has a dashboard via web that records everything on the target phone, except when the Rom interferes with it.
Phone is rooted with stock rom 4.1.2, twrp.
Any help is much appreciated. I'll give a thanks.
The S3 has that problem call recording apps don't work. There is one app but it costs money, there was also a modded hack which allowed for call recording to work. There is information on this in the OP of The People's ROM and there's a thread here somewhere on the modded hack. I am at work so I can't really search to link you right now. Hopefully someone else can help you a little further.

Here's the link to the call recording mod. It works great except for having to manually press the record button on the phone pad to record outgoing calls. Incoming calls can be set to record automatically in the phone app settings.

Well dang that sucks! I'm paying $50/Mo for Myspy. It picks up installed apps, texts, calls, locations, FB, record surroundings whenever I set a command to do so. My program I use does automatically record the calls even though its just static, when I listen to them you can actually hear the phones ringer and the surroundings like a Tv or the radio until they hit answer then it goes all static. I don't care if I have to pay money to record calls, even if there was a app that ran in the background that would put the records in a folder via the internal memory then I could export to my SD card. It's just crazy!

Here's the link to the call recording mod. It works great except for having to manually press the record button on the phone pad to record outgoing calls. Incoming calls can be set to record automatically in the phone app settings.

I appreciate the link but I don't think it's going to do me any good with my problem I'm having. I guess I'm just screwed! That is the only thing that I cannot get. Oh and I wish there way a way to tell what websites have been gone too from incognito, or a keylogger (which is against XDA rules) I know.
Have you solved this issue? I was looking into Mspy for an international S3, when you thread came up and made me think twice...

The international devices are completely different than the US variants.

I have NOT solved this issue. Not sure if it is the program I use or not.
I have the same situation, paying for mspy app (mspy.com) works great in one phone, but in the Galaxy S3 - works everything (Keylogger, record sourroundings, msgs, call logs) -
But when a call goes in or out (I can hear the sourrroundings) but when the call is answered I can only hear a loud and nasty static..
HOW CAN WE RESOLVE THIS ISSUE??

Thank you for bringing this back to my attention. I have since then moved her phone from the S3 to the Note 2 and it is still an issue. Assuming it would be the same problem on my Note 3. Obviously it is "Mspy" the program itself. I mean, don't get me wrong the program is amazing and does what it says it is supposed to do un other than the fact it is missing one huge implementation which was one of the major factors I purchased this program.

"Mspy" is NOT in the Playstore. Very expensive program you get from the website. Have tried getting in contact with them, I always get a, "we're currently trying to solve this issue" key word "trying". After this length of time, wouldn't they have fixed it by now if they cared?
So, basically unless someone can find a fix, then we're screwed! Thanks for the input guys, I've laid Mspy to rest.
