[Q] Help.. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I use a stock HTC Desire updated to 2.2 and I have a few problems :
1. The most important issue, I cannot access the Market, because I live in Syria, and we're from that blacklist thing.
2. Facebook, Youtube, MySpace, and a few more websites are blocked in my country, and there is no proxy option in the Wi-Fi, and I can't use proxy with my Data connection bescase it won't work. (Guess my provider doesn't allow that)
So, to have access to all of the above, I think rooting is the best solution, but I find it confusing. And if there another way around, I'd prefer it.
Also, I want to have (if I decide to root) :
1. The exact same Sense UI.
2. Android 2.2 (offical HTC Desire 2.2 ROM)
3. I want the Radio version unchanged. (or re-installing it?)
4. HTC Widgets. ([Wi-fi, Bluetooth, Moblie Data, Profile, etc..] switches, HTC Clock, People, etc....)(All of them)
5. Proxy option in Wi-Fi. (or an application if this feature not available)
6. Market access.
Excuse me for being a noob.....Sorry.
Yeah, in conclution, I want to have everything the same, I want no change in my dear phone (excluding root access and proxy option and Market access)
Can you provide me with the needed program links, tutorials, etc....
Oh, and what is the easiest way to root (unrevoked3, anything else?) with tutorials.
Thank You Greatly

By the way, what is the safest rooting method?

I suggest using the unrevoked (www.unrevoked.com) method to root. Does not require a goldcard. Just make sure you install the correct usb drivers from HTC sync.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

But does it work with Android 2.2, what if it doesn't, is there any way to downgrade my phone.
What about the drivers, where and how can I get them?

Sorry just re-read your post.
Unrevoked does not work with stock 2.2....sorry

I've tried unrevoked and it just wont work for me!

[Q] Newbie rooting woes

Hey guys,
Firstly, sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology because I'm still quite unfamiliar with it.
Anyway, I just got my Desire Z about a week ago and am planning to root it so that I can access paid apps via Market Enabler.
I've read through all the guides on how to root and seems simple enough. However, I have a few questions regarding the default HTC applications.
1: Will I be able to continue using and updating the HTC apps (like HTC Locations, HTC Camera or HTC Car Dock) that came along with it after rooting?
2: Is is possible to keep the default SenseUI after rooting instead of getting a custom ROM that looks like SenseUI?
3: Will my phone stop working with htcsense.com after rooting?
4: Will I require a custom ROM installed into it after rooting, or can I just reuse the same default HTC ROM?
Basically, I love my phone and don't want to change anything except getting to access paid apps from Android Market. To do so, I would need to have Market Enabler working, which needs me to have Superuser permissions. Hence, why I need to root it.
Thanks!

Rooting is just rooting; nothing will change other than your ability to do whatever you want to/with your device. Just rooting won't change anything other than your ability to install apps which require root access.

Oh, so I suppose I was looking at the wrong rooting options then. The ones I've been looking at seems to flash the phone as well (unrevoked).
Guess I'll need to find a tutorial to just root the phone. Thanks!

Internet traffic

I don't have root but I want to select and limit my internet traffic .I have orange data traffic 200MB/month.
I have widgets : news , weather , twitter but I don't want them to automaticly update data just when I want to.
But mobile traffic to be available.
So youre just like unrooted.
Well i use netcounter!
You can see how many MB you spended already and you can set an alarm for your limit.
try it out!
I'm just looking at some tutorials how to root my htc desire. Can I root it if I have 2.2 installed ?
Thne disable autmatic updating in Accounts & Sync. And in other services you should set manually the update interval (like Stocks, Mail etc.).
Found on another forum:
By default the phone will check the mail servers for mails every so often (I believe the stock setting is every 15 minutes during office hours and every hour during the evening and weekends). It'll also check the weather and stock market every hour.
All of that is customizeable in the settings, but even with stock values it won't generate much data traffic. I use about 300MB/month, but that includes browsing the internet and such as well. I reckon the phone's own usage would be around 30-40MB/month. That may seem like a lot, but the phone really needs a serious dataplan if you want to use it's full potential.
There is a chance that you have some app that's gone wild and is continually using the internet. Some people just don't know how to write apps properly, so there are a few bad ones on the market.
The best way to verify this is to go back to the Android Market and check the comments of every app you downloaded.
Or you could look for an app which monitors your data traffic and shows which app is using how much data. I never used one myself as I don't really need to worry about data, but there are plenty of people here who have experience with those monitoring apps. They can probably suggest a good one.
I'd suggest using WiFi in the meantime.

Try unrevoked 3.21 - that worked for me & a lot of people.
A guide for the latest version,BTW.
can you point me to a download link for version 3.21
tried with the lastest version again and it says : internal error : installing package failed
Try searching it for on the net such as "unrevoked 3.21 download", but if you cant find it, I'll upload it tomorrow, when I get home.
Here is the download: Unrevoked 3.21

I had the same problem with unrevoked 3.32 a few days before. It finally worked after I cleanup all the data. So it was quite possible that unrevoked was incompatible with some installed software.

[Q] Major questions before i root for the 1st time

okay, i love my evo
i'm ready to root now so i've come to this point where i need to know...
1. is there a way to save all my apps and email addresses, pretty much just move everything over to the rooted product or have a backup of it i can access. i mainly don't want to lose my emails that aren't gmail cause i dont remember all the passwords.
2. is there a way to come back to stock? and have all my stuff still there?
3. whats the easiest way, i'm currently eyeing Unrevoked3.
4. what are the pros and cons of rooting?
5. i keep hearing about there being no security and i want to know how to keep my phone secure while also being rooted.
thanks in advance, i will be communicating throughout this process

1.Once you root [recommend using unrevoked] it won't touch your apps, ect. it'll be the stock rom with root access, so you won't lose any data.
2.Yes, you'd run the unrevoked s-on tool, the a 3.70 ruu to return back to stock, unrooted.
3.Yes, use unrevoked. Just make sure HTC isn't installed, but was prior. You only need the drivers, and install the hboot drivers.
4. Pro: Highly customizable: splash screen, boot animations, multiple roms, themes for roms, increased battery life, you can take it further.
Con: Only real one is you can brick your phone by doing something stupid, like doing a battery pull during a radio update. Quickest way to brick it. More trouble shooting than non rooted phone, but most are easily fixed.
5.There is security. A small amount of people have claimed to got viruses from downloading pirated apps from sketchy sites. If you choose to use them, no problem, put you can't post links to paid apps. If you really want protection, you can install lookout mobile security, nice features. But basically, don't download from sketchy places.
so i will keep all my emails and also what about applanet?
1: using unrevoked, you don't have to. any other method, you can back up apps with titanium backup. contacts with stock contact backup.
2: yes. unrevoked s-on tool (even if you don't use unrevoked, the other methods use the unrevoked radio exploit) and then ruu back to stock.
3: easiest is unrevoked, but then you are pretty clueless afterwards. you can do this if you want, but i'd personally reccomend the method in my signature. not as hard as you think. mostly just copying over commands. teaches you A LOT as well.
4: pro: do anything you want with yoru phone. roms, roms, roms, roms, themes, boot anims, splash screens, free tether, anything you want, updates sooner, other phone's updates on your phone, stock android (not htc), modded stock android (cm7 is sexy), a bunch of other stuff, gets you away from video games, get a bit of tech knowledge.
cons: you can brick by pulling battery during radio update, or by the flash memory corruption like 7 people have reported (but they all got free refurbs, and 7 is like 1/3000000th of rooters anyways). if you are experiancing problems, you need to do more troubleshooting than stock. this is actually good though, because my dad's phone is messed up, and the only thing he can do to fix it is ruu. thats it. i can change roms, diagnose, replace apks, anything. also, you need some time on your hands.
5: the security they are talking about is from you. yes, if you turn off your nand protection (root) then you are more easily succeptible to viruses, but most have rageagainstthecage exploit anyways, which would let them do the same thing. the downside here is all antivirus and moblile security things will say that you have system viruses. ignore that.
edit: just saw your above post
applanet is piracy, and very risky. most malware and viruses come from things liek that.
and for your question there \/. unrevoked is pretty self explanitory. just install and uninstall htc sync, install drivers, and run the program.
also, link me to the easiest walkthrough of unrevoked if u can?
and i downloaded the drivers, i need sync too then uninstall it?
Only my oppinion... Best instructions are posted on the unrevoked site.

Follow these and you'll be fine.
-Install modified windows hboot drivers
-Install htc sync, immediately uninstall it
-On your phone, enable usb debugging [menu>settings>applications>development]
-Connect your phone in charge only, run unrevoked [will show up as reflash_package on your pc]
Let it run its full course, will take ~5 minutes, and reboot twice.

Living in Mainland China with HTC + Android

I'm a brand new user to my new HTC Wildfire S and even though I have searched and come across many threads on numerous websites, the language, terms and discussions seem to confuse me. Hopefully here I can possibly find an answer to my question.
I live in Chongqing China. A city in the mainland of China - therefore subject to all the firewalls and bans on international media, news, content, etc. I think Google has exited the market as well. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other "Western" outlets are also blocked. Nonetheless, I'm able to use a VPN on my computer to access these.
Now to my real issue...
I recently bought and HTC Wildfire S with the model number HTC A510e. It is running on Androir 2.3.3. and has HTC Sense version 2.1.
My carrier is China Mobile. I have a normal data package with allows me to text, browse the "internet" and use other Chinese applications. The problem is that I don't have Market. I've tried download the .apk and it doesn't work. I don't know how to "root" my phone (unlock?).
I simply want to be able to get access to Market! I have HTC Marketplace but it is garbage and littered with Chinese applications. I've tried numerous different .apk files called Market but none of them seem to work. I even installed my VPN to my phone and still, I can't access websites like Facebook and YouTube from my phone.
I think my only option is to "root" my phone. I don't know what rooting is or the consequences and if I can do it. I found a bunch of videos on YouTube by a group called 'unrevoked'. Does anyone know if I can follow them or what?
The bottom line is that I just want the Market.apk so I can download some "Western" applications and use them. I don't even have Maps... it's some Chinese application which can't be changed to English.
Any help, ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
It sounds like your best bet would be to 'debrand' your phone to a WWE (worldwide english) version, which has all the regular applications installed. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142529
Thanks a lot. I read through it but unfortunately, I don't understand a lot of what they are discussing. I need it in laments terms... can you help me out?
We can give it a shot...
At what point are you getting stuck?
I haven't even started. All I have is my mobile phone and the card inside it... I'm assuming I should follow those steps to make it a GoldCard or whatever?
Hello compatriot, Your english is GOOD.
yet, their is not a good way to "root" the s-on phone. Please wait, the root methond is coming out.
Follow the steps in http://android.modaco.com/topic/305672-creating-a-goldcard/ first to create the Goldcard (this is just a fancy name for a sd-card that has a zip file on it that will allow you to flash a wider selection of signed ROM's - including older versions than what you might currently be running).
Once you have the 'Goldcard' ready, it is in fact a matter of following the steps in the thread I linked to earlier.

There is no need for Backstrom to root his phone; debranding can be done without root.
Also, what root method would there be coming out soon? Are the people of xda.cn working on some alternative to AlphaRevx?
isn't the htc going to unlock the bootloader by august or september? then that means s-off can root.

There is no way of knowing that for sure. Now stop derailing the thread.
Debranding from TMobile version to euro is possible with goldcard ?
Sorry I've been busy. I'll get back to you soon! And thanks for offering to help me out!

Rooting is not risky or anything, just plug you phone in your pc and use unrevoked. Finished in a minute or so and then it's rooted.. But if you don't feel good about it, don't
thanks, i downloaded the unrevoked program, before i root is there a posibitety to backup my phone rom? And if i root, do i loss my warrenty?
and he program said, make shure you DONT have installed htc sync, do the mean on my pc or phone? and can i use it after it is rooted again?
thanks
btw can i also flash my rom with this program?
Read guides before you do anything, they are all over the forums just search.
Also before you do anything write down your software/radio version so you can download appropriate RUU in case you need go back to factory default ROM.
You'll also need to know how to partition SD card. (most ROMs requires it)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i installed the theme app but now i cant put my old htc sense widgets on my desktop. is there a posibillety to have my old sense widgets? (i looked onb the market but the fake ones aren't so nice as the original)
Not the exact same ones, no.
There are some replicas on the market, especially for the 4x2 clock/weather there is a great replica that looks exactly like the real thing.
