Does anyone know how to delete an e-mail account that is displayed but doesn't really exist...I'll explain...I have a gmail account that worked fine and one day it just stopped getting e-mails (to the phone). When I went to delete it off my phone it basically told me I have no e-mail account yet when I go to the email tab I can see it. When I try to click inbox it just brings me to the accounts screen, and it does NOT display it. So I had to set up another link on my phone to my gmail account. Now it displays two accounts, one that I can't access and can't delete, and another perfectly working one. Is there anyway I can get rid of it?
I ran the Unread Fix count script and it goes through BOTH email accounts yet my phone doesn't seem to think there is two, it just decides to display two.
This happened to me as well... If I remember correctly what I did to get rid of the ghost account was to create a temporary email account that was not gmail (i just gave fake credentials)... then I reset my device, deleted both gmail accounts, then reset phone again, deleted fake account and finally added credentials for the gmail account that had been giviing me probs. Not sure how important resetting device is, I suspect that the key was adding a non-gmail account. I hope this helps and sorry if my explanation isnt clear... I am still waking up! Good luck.

1. Hotmail. I don't use Hotmail, but when I used messenger it created a Hotmail Email account (even though my messenger email account is a @rogers.com not Hotmail). The Delete account option is greyed out.
2. System. This email account was created when i installed BB Connect. I uninstalled BB Connect and the Email account is gone however is still shows up on the sliding panel on my homescreen. I tried rebooting and changing homescreen themes.
Try looking into to the registry for the keys about the e-mail accounts on the notifications pannel of the chome, I guess you can delete them there (at least the 2nd one...)

I have searched, but can't find an obvious solution to this yet.
When downloading emails to the TP2, I continually get a problem. I receive part of the mail (first 5k for example), then click to download rest of the mail and click send & receive on the inbox again. The TP2 then sees the email as 'read' and deletes it - before I have chance to see the remainder of the mail.
Is there a setting somewhere to prevent this auto-delete (at least until I've read it!)?

The reason the mail gets deleted is probably because you have set up your email account as POP3 account. If you use IMAP, you won't have this problem...

Is it possible to change an email account from POP3 to IMAP? I always assumed that was down to the ISP to determine the type of account?
Or are you suggesting I find an alternative provider?
It doesn't matter whether it's a POP or IMAP account - it shouldn't auto-delete messages.
I had 3 accounts set up at POP3 and all was fine - I leave the setting to keep them on the server when deleting them off the phone so I can still download the messages when logging on at home with my computer.
However, since a hard reset to sort a few other problems I've been experiencing this 'auto-delete' phenomenom - I get an mail and read it WITHOUT deleting it yet next time I look the message has gone - it's not even in the 'deleted' folder.
You can also set your account to download the full message. Maybe you have set your setting to download the first 5k. It can be done by the advanced setting of your account.

I'm glad its not just me!
I have it set to only download the first 5k, and then it works OK - until I get mails smaller than this or try to download the rest of the message - at which point it deletes them off the device AND the server - before I've read them.
I had all accounts set to download the whole message and attachements and to leave them on the server when deleted - yet they were auto deleting off the phone and from the server.
I have now set them as IMAP, but have to remember not to delete them off the phone before getting them downloaded onto my PC - not ideal!
I can read my email before it is deleted but the mail in the inbox mail disappears and doesn't show up in deleted folder (as mentioned above). I have my Tilt2 set to leave mail on the server so I can get the same mail on my desktop computer. I assume that the mail "disappears" from the phone inbox when it goes off the server to my desktop.
My "fix" is to move anything I want to keep on my phone to a "Save" folder. Yes it is a PITA but at least for some important stuff, it remains on the phone til I want it deleted.

Why doesn't whole message download
I have set my email accounts to download the Whole Message and all attachments. However, when I log on I get the message header only and a comment that the whole message will be downloaded next time I logon. I have to come out of the account, logon again and select "Send/Receive" A bit irritating. Is this normal?

Had the desire for a couple of weeks now and I must say I'm impressed with it, as most of you are as well.
I've come across the following very irritating problem though:
My primary e-mail address is hotmail. Been using it for years and years and I've never had the need to change to gmail. Having switched to android now I understand that I can't sync the phone to hotmail. I have it working on pop which is 'fine' but I want proper syncing of mail and calendars which is not supported.
Fair enough, I thought this was the time I'm supposed to switch to gmail. When I booted the phone up for the first time I was asked for a gmail account for google maps, etc. and I just used one I had created a while back. Now that I'm looking to migrate to gmail completely in order to benefit from syncing, etc. I want to change this e-mail address to another gmail one.
Has anyone managed to do this without doing a factory reset on the desire??
I've tried:
i. Changing the gmail password from a pc and rebooting the phone - it just says it failed to sign in and prompts for the new password, won't let you change e-mail address though.
ii. Clearing all cache's from google related application - gtalk, gmail, maps, gapps, etc. - This doesn't work either as somehow the account information is still held.
iii. Creating a secondary e-mail address and try get everything to use it instead then remove the primary one - didn't manage either. I changed google maps, gmail and the calendar app to use the new e-mail address but it still won't let me delete the other one as it says it's being used by some other app!
Any help would be much appreciated... I really don't feel like going through a factory reset and installing everything again!

On this subject, my advice to anyone is to get their own domain name and then use Google Apps for Domains.
At present this is what I do for my email, but if in a few years time something better than Gmail comes along, chances are I can repoint my domain to a new mail service and thus keep my email address in perpetuity.

Forgot to mention I tried this as well but it won't let me remove it as it says the account is being used by some application

I got this same problem as this old post, but can not find the solution....does anyone know the answer as time has moved on and maybe it is an available solution.
My issue is that I just flashed LeeDrOid 2.3b&c to my Desire. I entered my HOTMAIL e-mail details as the first address at the set up prompt. Now i can not findout how to delete that account.
It seems that the whole Android E-mail setup and operation is not really as good as Windows Mobile! or its operator error ;-)
For my Sync'd HOTMAIL I'm currently using TouchDown and set the server name to 'm.hotmail.com' this thirdparty software allows full syncronisation to my Hotmail account both ways including any folders that i choose, apart from the deleted bin on my Webmail does not get emptied if i delete all from the TouchDown application on my Desire.
On my Gmail i have created my account in the Exchange option and used m.gmail.com for the server, whilst this gives me a view of all the account folders all of them show "no mail" even though i have set the Receive days to 30 days and know that I have e-mails in the folders that are newer than 30 days old.
I really would like a fully operational integrated IMAP set up for both my Gmail accounts (i have 2 account) and one HOTMAIL account, ideally using the built in Gmail and "standard Mail" programs that come with FROYO Sense.
So anyone know the answer to achieving this?
i) How to delete my original Hotmail account entered on start up of my new ROM.
ii) Is it possible to set up withing the Sense builtin applications for Exchange Gmail and also for Exchange Hotmail so that i can do away with hte TouchDown application?

I've upgraded my account to Gmail and now need to change the phone as it's not receiving emails due to being set to my old googlemail.com domain. Is there any way of doing this without having to hard reset the unit?
I know I can add it as a 2nd account but that doesn't allow calender sync and I wanna clean phone...

my girlfriends hero has the same issue. it has android 1.5 and she wont let me flash a new rom on it so she is getting annoyed with it because of this gmail/googlemail fiasco. Nevermind, il just say sorry it needs a new rom...

Just change your account back to @googlemail.com if you can't be arsed with a reset. You only gain Picasa sync anyway.
I wanted the gmail.com as it's quicker to type! I'm lazy!
Even if you are officially @googlemail you should be able to use @gmail in all incoming and outgoing mail - works for me

I cannot be bothered. I use googlemail.com for entering credentials I don't need to enter again (such as e-mail), after all it's the actual username and gmail.com for logging into forums/giving out to friends etc...
Despite resetting my account to @googlemail and doing a factory reset on the phone, I discover today that both online and on the phone I am @gmail - without a word from Google!

I found that you often had to make the account switch a couple of times for it to actually register.
easily done in android 2+ but 1.5 i cant seem to find a way of removing/readding accounts.

OK so I'm having some odd problems after I flashed the Gingersense ROM. Right after I flashed the ROM the add email account screen was missing all of the standard options I had seen before. So, I restored the data to the mail app using Titanium Backup. That worked for a little while. Then I needed to change my email password.
When I tried to go in and change my Yahoo password, it said it failed to communicate with the server. When I tried to delete the account I keep getting the same error. 504 0:null
Anyone have any idea what that means? Can I somehow reinstall the mail app? will that help or should I try reflashing the ROM?
And before anyone pokes fun at a person still using Yahoo, I've had that account for a lot longer than gmail has even existed.
Edit: Just did a nondroid backup to the original froyo, still broken!
As an additional piece of info, I keep getting emails from [email protected] saying that my account "could not be authenticated" though those are the only emails coming in to that account

I ended up having to run the factory reset, which wiped out all of the accounts that synced to my phone.
After running the setup and tying my google account back to my phone, the gmail account never showed up in my email.
It still won't let me setup an email using the quick account type shortcuts, only with the POP/IMAP shortcut. I was able to get both my yahoo and my gmail back up and working, though I am missing the nice little icons for the accounts I had seen previously.
