KiNgxKernel or Netarchy kernel? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which one do you like better? I'm not necessarily looking for best over clock speed, but actually better battery life. Any ideas?

I prefer kings kernels.. I haven't had good results on nets kernels lately.. cpu stayed at 100% a lot for me..
Kings scales just fine for me and provides great battery life.. I use his bfs #4 kernel.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA app.

I've used nearly every one of netarchy's kernels, but am now using King's. My battery life is awesome on BFS #4, and everything is very smooth.

I actually prefer hero's baked snack kernel 1. It also has HAVS like king's kernel. Standby time battery life is about the same between king's and hero's, but for me hero's battery life is better when actively using the phone.

Stupid question, but what is the difference between BFS and CFS kernels?
I guess a better question is BFS #4 or CFS #7?

Google is your friend. But basically, BFS is supposed to be faster, while a little less stable, while CFS is supposed to be a little more stable (its older), but the trade off is the speed. I personally dont see much of a speed difference, but I still usually use BFS.

netarchy. Never had any problems with his kernels. Haven't tried King's yet, but the way I look at is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

running net's kernel atm, but most likely going to switch. 4g doesn't seem to work for me, and it keeps saying there is a voicemail update, but won't actually let me install it.

I'm sure KingxKlick is a great guy and knows what he's doing, but I avoid his kernel because he doesn't actually own an Evo. I stick with netarchy because he's someone I trust.

Unistall voicemail from Titanium backup. Then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7749762&postcount=44 That is the updated Apk for the voicemail. Hope that helps man. And for me I use Kingz and love it. Been getting some very good battery life out of it. And its smooth even when running @ 1.17 oc.

Do you have the latest radios?
The voicemail update (or lack of update, rather) is a ROM issue. It affects Fresh and others. More info and fix here.

hmm, thats weird. I didn't have the problem before i flashed it with the kernel. any info on the 4g issue? if thats rom as well, then netarchy kernel is fine.
edit: just did a quick flash of king's kernel. seems like the 4g issue is rom issue as well.

Kings has been amazing so far, i'm very satisfied!

I have used both and get better battery out of kings by a large margin. I am using the BFS #4 and couldn't be happier. I had the 100% CPU issue on nets last update.
Here is a simple thing for me: When I am running Kings, my phone seems cooler to the touch, no matter what I'm doing. On nets, it get warm, then cools, then warm. Heat is wasted energy.
I think lots of the meat and cheese in Kings kernel came from net anyhow, but I no longer has a need to flash a new kernel. Sticking with kings.

Like said above, if it isn't broke, I don't fix it. I'm using Netarchy's 4.18 and I'm not having the 100% cpu issue at all

Ok, figured I'd contradict myself and flash king's #4 bfs and test benchmarks against net's 4.1.8 bfs. Here are my results:
Fresh 3.1.0.2 / novatec 0003 / setcpu @ 1152 performance
fps2d:
net's - 54/2.69 attempt 2 of 3
king's - 54/1.84 attempt 3 of 3
linpack:
net's - 37.029 attempt 4 of 5
king's - 37.661 attempt 4 of 5
Nena Mark: Only ran once
net's - 15.7
king's - 15.5
Neocore: Only ran once
net's - 31.4
king's - 31.7
Quadrant:
net's - 1496 attempt 1 of 2
king's - 1513 attempt 2 of 2
Looks like king won this round. Gonna keep running it to see what battery life is like.

Netarchy 4.1.8. Maybe I'll try King's....but Netarchy is always on the ball. My battery is at 26.0 C on Net's and I've been surfing the web.
Will be using net's. It's like Kobe v LeBron

What is the best battery saving kernel?

but is kingxkernel bfs 4? the best?
i need something really good. overclock?
i want to have the best battery life.
how can i do this?
yes
i would likke to know the sam ething
I am running CM6 and would like to use the best battery saving kernel!!
I am having great results with King's #11 CFS
Really good battery life? I'm just starting to use kings CFS #9.
Sent From My HTC EVO
King's #11 CFS has been running fantastic for me. I am using the Azarel v2.3 ROM with it. Strangely enough, the first time I loaded Kings with Azarel, the phone was super laggy. I gave it a reboot or two and now it rocks. I have never had good battery life, even with stock 3.29 or other ROMs and kernels. I could make it throughout the day with moderate use and have about 15% left. I have been unplugged today for six hours and have 80% left with slightly less than moderate use... Slow day.
I'm also on radio 2.15.00.09.01 and PRI 1.34 on a HW rev. 003 EVO. The 1.77 PRI dropped my signal strength here in Ocala, FL.
Of course, make sure you wipe your cache/dalvik before you flash the new kernel.
Hope this helps!
Yeah,i did so. How long til the battery life shows progress. This is the first kernel I'm testing. Kings cfs#9. How can I calibrate the battery ? I wiped the battery stats to make it better to .

Perf Test
Since battery life seems to be the biggest gripe, It would be nice to have some type of non-biased performance test / graphs for some of the ROMS and kernels.
The Common misconceptions and other useful information... post at the top of this sub-forum has great information, including manners to calibrate your battery.
The problem with testing ROMs and kernels is that everyone's phone is slightly different. Some can't over/underclock to the same degree as others' phones. Sometimes a particular kernel will cause your EVO to force close applications or have other strange problems such as rebooting.
If you search the forums, you will see that there was one person in particular that did a graph of performance testing with various ROMs and kernels.
My advice would be, if you are confident enough, to go ahead and test each of the "leading" ROMs and kernels and see which one works best for you. You can also refer to the Wiki which has ROM/kernel information available.
I wanna know how if it works best for you. I wouldn't know what to test.

Those are definitely the best steps. Personally the new 3.3 ROMs kernel is supposed to be awesome for battery. I like the Azarel and myn ROMs and have had good luck with Kings #11 and netarchy's kernels. Your mileage WILL vary which is why you should do your own testing.

Go Here for his kernels. I use Netarchy Toastmod - 4.3-cfs-havs-more-sbc and so far it's worked amazing on the various ROMs I've used (including Sprint Lovers) but it's worked best for me on Myn's ROMs.

No, and no
Don't use SetCPU with a havs kernel. If you go with one of his nohavs kernels then by all means use SetCPU as you wish. Another thing, just from my personal experience (though it may be different for your phone) the CFS kernels work far better than the BFS kernels. There's a guide around here that explains the difference.
As far as SBC goes, I haven't had any issues yet. I've been using a battery monitor to watch what's going on with my battery and haven't seen anything wrong with it. Another thing I do, just as a small precaution, is not let the phone charge 6-8 hours over-night. I'll let it charge to 100% then let it sit for about 2-3 more hours and call it quits. Don't know if that really does anything, but it makes me feel better so eh.
I know the military (I'm in the Army) uses Lit-ion batteries and trickle charges them without having any of them blow up/fry, however they do lose their ability to hold a charge over time. The fact that they do it, and the only problem has been lifespan of the battery is what convinced me to try an SBC kernel. Just choose whichever you feel comfortable with. It's all preference really.

I've been using that one with no-sbc and it's worked great with the conservative profile. HAVS just deals with what voltage the processor uses at any given time/frequency so you can indeed use setcpu with it. It's the kernels with the built in smartass governor or ROMs using other battery tweaking scripts that don't always work well with setcpu.
And trust me, the military does not trickle charge their li-ions and they only run them at 4.10 volts to extend their life (depending on battery, always less than volts than their commercial counterparts). This I know for certain.
Anyone have a link to the stock kernel
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Guys quick question, with the above mentioned kernel. What frequency does if use when you turn off the screen? I want if to use the lowest possible, does the kernel do it automatically or should I use something like the overlook widget?
Also, can someone please provide instructions how to update the kernel, I haven't looked at the link yet so If there's instructions there that fine.
Thanks

i just flashed to netarchy kernel to my evo. cfs, havs no sbc. when i try to connect to wifi it says error. i used kernal manager to flash the kernal. is there anything i can to do to get the wifi back or do i need to go back to the stock kernel. i am running sprint lovers ROM. any suggestions.

HERE you can compare kernels. But i personally like a kernel that more aggressive. Netarchys Kernels & Ziggy's Kernels
You will have to experiment on your own and see what works best for you. Every phone reacts differently to kernels.
Personally, I have the best luck with Netarchy kernels. Ziggy kernels are completely unstable for me to the point where my system freezes up and I have to pull the battery.

Got onto the Elite 3 ROM the other day and LOVE it! However, its absolutely chewing through my battery life (extended batteries). Went from getting at very least 12 hours on MikFroyo 4.5 & stock kernel to now sitting at 63% after 3 hours! Was using Juice Defender for a bit until this kernel. lots of people said not to with havs.
Using Nets 4.3.4 cfs nosbc haves more with Konis Elite Series 3.
Have also got Setcpu running at smartass (also tried on demand) st 245/740ish and have one screen off profile set to 245/245 powersave.
Need to find a fix because I want to stay on this ROM.

[AOSP] Q Which kernel do you prefer? Savaged Zen or Tiamat?

Just a show of hands basically, because both of these guys keep updating their kernels back to back it seems.

I agree Tiamat has been awesome for me...i had too much chopiness with salvaged-zen and i personally like the SBC addition to kernels and they stopped updating it with SBC i saw...but as far as battery life and smoothness goes, i choose Tiamat, hands down.
Tiamat is great, but there is something up with bluetooth audio in his kernels. It's like the audio doesn't use the mic to auto cancel sound or something. Can't really put my finger on it. All I know is that when talking to the fiance after work on the way home in the car on yesterday, all she heard was road noise. Switched back to SZ and today its gone. Gonna wait a couple of revisions and try it again

Savaged Zen here. I tried Tiamat for a while, but I kept getting random reboots no matter what I tried. The first SZ I used was .9 bfs havs, and it worked great. Currently on .1.2 cfs and no problems.
Savaged Zen All the way. Especially now (this is from march) the 2.6.38 line, im on the newest 2.0.2 and Its super smooth, I havent seen the slightest hint of any instability, and it rips on benchmarks and games
Any Tiamat kernel sends me into random soft reboots, almost once every half hour or so. I can get it to stop by flashing ViperBoy's raise voltage script. Then it runs quite smooth and stable, however battery life sucks for me (probably from raising voltage) Savaged Zen gets my vote, it just agrees with my device way better for some reason, especially 2.0 CFS.
SavagedZen works better for me than Tiamat. Had them both and both worked well but I like running BFS on my phone and the SavagedZen governor is a great governor for battery life and performance.
timat is really stable on my phone, but sz has always been much faster... now that he new sz fixed my problems, im staying with it
I'm a fan of savaged but I'm cool with tiamat, still looking for a happy home. Im on SZ 2.0.2 which is giving me good battery life but still has the BS wimax bug. I ran tiamat a couple weeks ago for a few days but I swapped out once the random reboots started. Wish CM7, one of the best roms, also came with the best kernel.

[Q] Looking for a kernel

I know I'm noobish so I apologize in advance if this question is dumb.
My phone is rooted and has sprintlovers 2.2 ROM, I wanted HDMI to work on my phone as it didn't with stock kernel so I tried netarchys newest offering something like 4.3.4 no HAVS no static UV. This kernel hated my phone. It was very slow both in feeling and in benchmark testing.
Then I downloaded teamwins offering for HDMI acceleration something along the lines of poonsense. This works great on my phone and also now hdmi app works.
Kernel I have now is listed as [email protected] # 17
What I want is the kernel I have now with the ability to overclock. I use the 1-1-1 Power Management System (see signature) so my phone is never on the charger and I don't need extra battery life so I'm more concerned with performance but would prefer if battery life was only minimally affected.
Anyone have any suggestions on a sense kernel that is near stock but has HDMI acceleration support and overclocking both in one? I looked around but was not having luck. Thanks- Brandon
Not exactly sure, but you can try the savaged-zen kernels.
I do believe the savagezen kernels are only for aosp; ive actually used this netarchy CFS NO-sbc Have LESS with HDMI and it works nice. Some phones don't like the kernels with aggressive havs or undervolting. If youre having battery issues you might want to downgrade your prl and nv from 1.90 to 1.77.

Thanks for all the replies.
I am not having battery issues to my knowledge.
The netarchy kernel I tried had neither havs or undervolting, it was the standard 4.3.4 kernel and it ran very badly. Unless it is possible to get a bad flash I think its not so compatible with my phone which is why I want the kernel I have now or something similar but with overclock option.
Anyone else have any suggestions? Is it *reasonably* possible that I got a bad file or flash of the netarchy beta? If so I may try it again as it has both features I want.
Did you flash 4.3.4 CFS or BFS? If you flashed CFS, try re-downloading it and re-flashing. If that doesn't work, try BFS. If you flashed BFS, I would still try downloading and flashing CFS and flashing that.

Unfortunately there is not a 4.3.4 netarchy kernel yet that is BFS, there is just CFS at this time. I may try to redownload it but I have to be honest I have a feeling I will get the same results I guess if there is a chance there isnt much to lose right?
I actually thought about that, but was too lazy to check if there was a BFS or not. but, I have had bad downloads before. Strange that your phone doesn't like that kernel though, dont here that too often.

Anyhow, I'm happy now I will probably try the HAVS versions now.
