Need to unroot and restore to stock - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am going to trade my phone tonight with someone who has the X and wants the Inc (I <3 Craigslist) Any ways, I am wanting to restore the phone to a stock condition for the new owner. Anyone have some info on how to do this.
I am currently using Koush's Test 8 rom and I believe I flashed the new radio in HBOOT but am not 100% I did it properly in case that makes a difference.
I still have the stock build I can restore through recovery and then do > Privacy settings > Factory Data reset. Would that be all I need to do?
Thanks

If you want to revert to the older radio, etc., perhaps this thread would help:

There ARE issues with running 2.1-Update1 stock with the 2.15 radio.

Settings --> About Phone --> Software Information --> Baseband version
On stock 2.1 update 1, it should be 1.00.03.04.06. Yours (if you upgraded to the leaked OTA) will be 2.05.xx.xx.xx.
I used the thread linked above and it worked great.

Froyo installed but no network

My desire is unlocked. I installed HTC stock rom of froyo. It installed but mobile network is missing and too much reboot/restart. I did not take any nandroid backup. Now I cannot use this 2.2 and also cannot go back to 2.1, what to do? Now bootloader is .80 and software number is 2.09.405.8
Please suggest.

I cannot make calls and receive calls. And mobile is rebooting frequently.
If you had flashed "stock" 2.2, you should have the new bootloader, so it sounds to me that you've manually flashed a custom ROM.
Did you flash the new radio?

I got the stock rom from here:http://www.geekword.net/manually-install-froyo-htc-desire/
I copied the file to my sd card and renamed it update.zip and then installed it. That's what I did. I don't know about 'radio'. If i have to install the radio, please inform the procedure. I am very new to these things.
Thanks a lot in advance.

You have to install new radio version!

it's written that these radios need a rooted desire for those to work. However, a 2.2 froyo desire cannot be rooted yet, i have read.
What's your suggestion? Even if I can go back to 2.1, it is ok for me.

It is written that these radios need a rooted desire but my desire is not. Besides, a 2.2 desire cannot be rooted yet as well, it is written. What to do?

Please advice
I made a gold card and flashed the rom again..............now it's working. Thanks.
Only one problem: The application from market downloads to the phone but during installation the phone restarts and therefore no market application can be installed.
Going to ask a similar question in this thread... I've updated to 2.2 with the Stock HTC rom.
And I've had problems using my wifi connection, 3g and GPS works fine but Wifi simply doesnt seem to be able get running. (cant find any networks and it says it is unable to scan for networks and just turns off after 10 seconds, assuming it was on in the first place).
Would an upgrade of the stock HTC rom with gold card installed fix this issue?
As it is now it claims I have baseband version 5.09.00.20, which as far as I can tell is the newest.

How do I un-root and get back to bone stock? incredible

I have Android version 2.2, Baseband version 2.05.00.06.11, Kernel version 2.6.32.17-g9a2fc16 [email protected] #1, Build number 20101014. Is it safe to use just any old RUU to roll back to something like 2.2 or does the baseband and kernel version matter when doing something like that? I have 2.2 and my wife has 2.1 update 1. I would like to get us both to 2.2 stock and then root it from there, rather than a custom mod. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Just make sure you are in S-ON when flashing the RUU and do not have the 09.01 radio installed.
Be very careful and make sure you have the correct RUU or you will only boot into fast boot I did it my self then re rooted.
its really not necessary. every build so far has a rooted version posted here with nothing else changed. not a big deal either way i guess... just wondering why you want to make it harder then it needs to be.
this is a get back to stock thread its in general dinc forum, i cant post links but u can find it. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436

Evo Unable to downgrade Radio Baseband

Spring Evo 4g
HBOOT: 2.10.0001
Model: PC36100
Hardware:0003
Android:2.2
Kernel 2.6.32.17
Baseband:2.15.00.11.19
Software3.70.651.1
PRI:1.90_003
Rooted with Unrevoked.
After upgrade Baseband, I got very bad signal and want to roll it back.
1. Tried to use cm recovery 2.6 to install zip file containing radio image to 2.05.00.06.10, not sucessful. However, every time it turn to 2.15.00.11.19 after reboot. I fell 6 vibrations during flash, do not know why.
2. Tried to use fastboot flash radio image, but I got "remote not allowed" message!
Could any body help out?
Thanks.

2.10.0001 radio is non-downgradeable on new hardware models.
Your phone has the new block size that is not compatible with the old radios and the remote not allowed error is because you are not using the eng hboot. Unfortunately it is not compatible as is either.
You can force it to downgrade and I believe I found a way to make it work with the new block sizes, but it's never been tested.
Ill test it. Got an extra new block size

If it doesn't work though you're pretty much guaranteed to be bricked. But if it's a phone you're not worried about I've been dying to find out if this will actually work.

Right on, all you need to do is downgrade to the eng hboot from the hboot and before rebooting or doing anything set 'fastboot -n 4096'
That *should* let you use the eng hboot. You still won't be unable to downgrade your radio though, although afterward it may let you flash the old radios without so much as a warning.
Ok will do. Hboot usb or fastboot usb?
Tryed this but i still get six short vibrates when flashing the radio

fastboot USB, as I previously said you will probably never be able to downgrade the radio. Sorry but that's just how it is.
Are you able to at least use your phone with the .76 hboot?
its weird.. there should be a way!!

Instead of downgrading so far back, have you tried downgrading the baseband from 2.15.00.11.19 to 2.15.00.09.01? If not, give it a try. You can download it and all of the other EVO radios from the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
UPDATE: Disregard. The original post was dated April 8th.

If i wanted to go back and try Android 2.1 roms, do i have to downgrade the radios as well?
Trying not to make a new thread but....say if I am using a 2.2 Rom with the 2.15.00.11.09 radio and I want to flash to a 2.1 rom(I'm talking bout far back as the rooted shipped stock ROM from last June. Would I need to downgrade my radio? And does that stock ROM already come prepackaged with a kernel. I'm pretty sure the kernel needs to be downgraded for it to be compatible. When I got my EVO in Sept, I was already on 2.2. Never tried 2.1 but have always been curious to try it and see how much worse it is. Then I could say I've finally tried all three versions of Android on my phone and how far we have progressed
As you've stated, the problem would not necessarily be the rom itself not working with the new radios, but whether or not the default kernel would work properly. Give it a shot. The worst that *should* happen is bootlooping. At that point, you can either reboot into recovery and flash a different kernel or downgrade the radio, PRI and NV. Of course, this is my opinion. You can download the rom from here . By the way, according to the descriptions on the shipped roms, the radios appear to be included.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.
just read that i can't downgrade my radio because i'm running the 2.10 HBOOT and on HW003. but if downgrading the radio is not necessarily important to run a rooted 2.1 rom then i don't have much to worry about do i? also, those links you posted: i can flash those RUU's in recovery like i would any other rom? i don't want to go back to stock and be unrooted.
i was thinking of running the 1.32.651.1 rooted rom from Flipzmode, and if need to - download the appropirate kernel link next to it on the detailed ROM wiki thread maintained by Toast.
You cannot downgrade your HBOOT from 2.10 (not necessarily accurate) without a risk of problems, however, you can downgrade the baseband, PRI and NV. I've done it several times. I've downgrade from baseband 11.19 to 09.01. As well as upgrade to 04.08. I've also downgraded my PRI from 1.90 to 1.77 all while having HBOOT 2.10.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.
i've downgraded my PRI because of the wakelock issues.
so you can downgrade the baseband to a certain extent? only within the 2.15 radios? but you cant downgrade to the radios that were on Eclair? if i can run 2.1 roms on 2.15 radios then by all means i'm going to try it out. thanks for the info doug

[Q] Upgrading to 2.2 or 2.3

My unlocked T-Mobile Desire is running Android 2.1. Is it possible to manually upgrade it to 2.2 or 2.3 without rooting it? I prefer to have a ROM that is as similar to the original HTC version as possible. Can anyone point me to a downloadable file? What data/settings will I lose when I upgrade if any? Can/Should I upgrade the radio? Thanks!

How come you're recommending an Asian version (I'm in Europe)? Shouldn't I look for a TMO version? Do the ROMs on the page you mentioned include Sense? Will I need to unlock my phone again after upgrading? Thanks

You can't upgrade the radio or recovery by yourself before you rooting you device. So , If you like the offical ROM so much, what you need to do is to find the lasted RUU.
Radio (recovery ,ect) will be uploaded at the same time.

Go to info about about your phone (in options) and post your exact Version-Number.
you can't flash this RUU just like that. You phone is branded, I suppose, so when you try to flash that RUU you'll get a cid-error. You can only flash T-Mobile ROMs and if you aren't offered an update when trying via the ota channel, there probably is no newer T-Mobile-Rom.
You can either wait for T-Mobile to release a newer RUU or unbrand it. Unbranding means you need to create a "goldcard" (use forum-search how to do this) and with this goldcard pluged in, you can flash the WWE-RUU that Keeray posted earlier.

Yes

I think so, as long as your Goldcard is installed. The Softwarenumber must be x.xx.405.x

I use Titanium Backup Pro and SMS Backup and both served my needs well.

[Q] Newb questions on bloatware and updating

Hi all,
My new M8 has the original stock 1.54.707.7 on it. I just installed TWRP and SuperSU. No other tamperings were done.
In the last few days the phone nags me to install the update of 2.22.707.3 but from what I read here, I need to return to stock recovery before I do that.
My questions are:
1) Is updating OTA considered easier and safer than flashing manually the version of my choice (most updated stock)?
2) Currently, all my bloatware are still installed, because I was not able to remove it in titanium backup (it crashed my phone!!). I read somewhere that I need to also do S-OFF before I can remove them? Is it true? I also read that after removing even a single piece of bloat, I can no longer update OTA. Is that true also? In case it is, my only option is to update to latest stock by flashing manually?
3) Will updating the version relock the bootloader and will force me to unlock it again?
4) If I'm not happy with the new version, is a full nandroid backup from TWRP enough to restore my phone to 1.54.707.7?
My apologies if I'm asking questions with obvious answers. I assure you that I read all information I could find, on and off XDA.
Thanks in advance,
Tal

It is not really safer to do either one, but if you want to update firmware you will have to do an OTA (unless you are S-Off)

If your bloatware is all still there it should be as easy as flashing back your stock recovery, accepting the OTA, and reflashing TWRP. Yes, if you remove bloatware it will make your job harder (but not much). You would then have to restore a nandroid from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376) but make sure you follow the directions closely!

Yes. However, I know for a fact that the OTA to Android 4.4.3 updates your firmware, which I am not sure is quite as easy to reverse. But let me put it this way... You probably will not want to go back after these OTAs. They will only make your phone better.

I agree. And remember that a lot of security updates are made with each OTA. So unless you experience some major bugs, its really not a good idea to step backwards.

Agree with above notion, that OTA is not necessarily "safer". And "easier" I suppose is debatable in your case. If you don't want to s-off, you might choose to OTA to get the latest firmware (hboot, radio, etc.), then install custom recovery and root again.
If you want S-off and complete freedom, I'd just do that, stay modded and not mess with the OTA.
These are probably some pretty complex topics for a n00b, so read around and learn as firmware, s-off, etc. are already being discussed in lots of other threads.

Nope, not true. You need a modded kernel, to remove the system write protection.

Thanks for the info Drax and Redpoint!
After doing some more reading, I decided to move over to Android Revolution custom rom.
I figured that I should stop insisting on staying with the original stock if the difficulties are piling up against me. I chose Android Revolution as I do like the sense look and feel and don't want to give up the built in features of the device (like use of the special camera app or sense ui launcher).
I got a nandroid backup and also titanium backup of all my apps.
Wish me luck now..
Regarding your answers, I'm still confused about firmware upgrading/reverting. Android revolution comes with a firmware based on 2.22.401.4 and my phone currently have 1.54.707.7. Your answers imply that restoring my 1.54.707.7 nandroid backup will NOT work? So why am I bothering with the backup in the first place?

Flashing a custom rom will never modify your firmware. The only ways to update firmware are to:
1 - Return to stock and accept OTA
2 - (only if you are S-off) flash firmware manually
You will be running the rom with a different firmware than what it is built for, which probably won't cause problems, but certainly could. As an example, ViperOne 2.0.0 is completely functional on the original m8 firmware, but has an extremely long boot time (5 minutes). I can't give specifics on other things which I have not tested, but that is one example. You can feel free to go ahead and flash whatever roms you want as they will not touch your firmware. If you want to change firmware, see directions above.

Well, I moved over to Android Revolution HD, and now I have two issues that I know of, presumabely because of the mismatched firmware:
1) long boot time, like you already anticipated I would have.
2) I can't play most of mp3 files! They just play silence, even though they worked correctly before the update!!
Now, I had no idea that ROM and FIRMWARE are two different concepts. I always thought they were synonims.
How should I go about to fix this? I thought to:
1) Backup my current state with nandroid.
2) Restore my stock nandroid backup
3) install stock recovery
4) accept OTA to update my firmware
5) install TWRP
6) Restore my Android revolution backup
Does this sounds reasonable? Will it be easier to do s-off and flash firmware myself?
Thanks in advance!

You steps are good enough to fix the long boot time problem (item 1)
Item 2 - you need to reflash ROM and AVOID selecting Harmon Kardon mod. HK mod works on S-Off device only

Thanks for the quick answers!
Regarding 2, I suspected as such, so I tried disabling it from the settings menu and it didn't help.. Shouldn't it have worked..? I will definately try reflashing though.
Regarding 1, as I said before, being a total HTC noob, I only found out about the concept of firmwares just yesterday and it's a shame that the instructions for Android Revolution doesn't say a word of warning about that (as far as my eyes can see). The OTA I have is for 2.22.707.3 and I see Android Revolution is based on 2.22.401.4. Is it close enough to not cause any known issues?
If I'm already reflashing, it would also be nice to understand what the rest of the Android Revolution mods means (there was something there about sqlite optimizations and some others..) I couldn't find explanations anywhere on xda or the web.
Thanks again! I must say that as this being a newer device and less popular than i9300, the information is still a little scarce, but the people here are really nice and helpful!

What you need to see is the firmware is 2.22.xxx.x or higher. Or the hboot is 3.18 or higher to have the ROM work flawlessly.
See in my sig .. with 2.22.707.3 I can use any custom Sense ROM without issues. In fact it works better as the radio region is correct for my region. If you're from Asia, it is not wise to have a EU radio region even it works.
Previously on other device like HTC One X people were talking about hboot and now people are talking about firmware 2.22 ... actually it means the same thing. You need a newer firmware/hboot to run 4.4.3 ROM.
I won't comment about mods/tweaks as I don't use them. You can search more info of them on XDA.
A tip how to search thing .. on google type for example "sqlite optimizations xda", you'll find many info on that.
It says sqlite optimizations - Faster access to contacts, messages etc...

I see from your sig that I'm going to end up with the same version as yours, so I should be OK, but I don't understand HOW DO YOU KNOW this stuff?? If I want to UNDERSTAND this and not just follow instructions blindly - what do I do? More specifically:
1) What IS the version of the firmware? Isn't 2.22.707.3 the stock ROM version? I understand that flashing OTA also upgrades my firmware at the same time, but isn't it strange that it doesn't have a specific number?
2) Is hboot 3.18 means that the BOOTLOADER version is 3.18? Is updating OTA also updates hboot as part of the firmware? I couldn't find any explanations on what exactly IS hboot (not in searching and not in the FAQ).
3) How do you know what is the exact prerequisites for Android Revolution (or any rom for that matter)? How do you know you need 2.22.xx firmware and 3.18 hboot? Is there an obvious reason that I don't understand as to why this information is not written explicitly in the post?
Thanks allot.

Read a lot, there are many fantastic information on XDA and learn from experience ... thing that I did and still doing since my first HTC device, an ELF in 2008.

Firmware does have a version no. It is written on the android-info.txt. You can find it in the firmware.zip
ROM version is written on build.prop

More or less yes ... when you boot to bootloader ... it is clearly written there as hboot-3.18.0.0000 if it is 3.18, 3.16.0.0000 if it is 3.16
hboot is something like a bios in a PC. This is where all partitions are, like system partition, user partition, recovery partition and so on.
See ... I can find one info on hboot : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700666

When a ROM base is 2.22.xxx.x then you need a firmware same or bigger than 2.22.xxx.x
People with 2.23.xxx.x firmware don't need to downgrade to 2.22.xxx.x as the firmware is new enough for the ROM with base 2.22.xxx.x
Why the information is not written in the thread, that is up to OP. Most of the time OP expect people will know what to do when there is a new base ROM.

Hi,
Well, I did the steps above and also reflashed ARHD without HK mod. Everything looks (and sounds) great now. In retrospect, it's not as bad as what I had to go through with my operator locked i9300 (finding out too late about EFS versions that gets automatically updated, and the fact that this partition not included in the nandroid backup and I can't restore the backup I made).
I still think that not mentioning the firmware thing in the ARHD post is a clear noob trap. And also the fact about the HK mod needing s-off. Now how would I ever guessed that disabling from settings is not enough to fix it and I need to reflash without it...?
Anyways, thanks allot for the personal escort. It made the ordeal allot less horrible.
