My unlocked T-Mobile Desire is running Android 2.1. Is it possible to manually upgrade it to 2.2 or 2.3 without rooting it? I prefer to have a ROM that is as similar to the original HTC version as possible. Can anyone point me to a downloadable file? What data/settings will I lose when I upgrade if any? Can/Should I upgrade the radio? Thanks!

You just find a ROM which matches your phone (your area) from this page .
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
How come you're recommending an Asian version (I'm in Europe)? Shouldn't I look for a TMO version? Do the ROMs on the page you mentioned include Sense? Will I need to unlock my phone again after upgrading? Thanks

You can't upgrade the radio or recovery by yourself before you rooting you device. So , If you like the offical ROM so much, what you need to do is to find the lasted RUU.
Radio (recovery ,ect) will be uploaded at the same time.

That RUU doesn't match your device, I have edit my post at once, but...

How do I know which RUU to download? Are all the 'Europe' versions ok for me? This one seems to be ok but it's not T-Mobile: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe

You don't need to root your device. RUU is the offical ROM update utility.

My English isn't good enough to tell you how to figure out which ROM matches your phone... I hope someone else can help you, sorry...
Thanks for trying your best to explain - I appreciate. I hope someone else will be able to guide me.
Do you know if I will lose any data when I upgrade? I am concerned about Emails, SMS Messages, contact list and installed apps mostly.
Go to info about about your phone (in options) and post your exact Version-Number.
you can't flash this RUU just like that. You phone is branded, I suppose, so when you try to flash that RUU you'll get a cid-error. You can only flash T-Mobile ROMs and if you aren't offered an update when trying via the ota channel, there probably is no newer T-Mobile-Rom.
You can either wait for T-Mobile to release a newer RUU or unbrand it. Unbranding means you need to create a "goldcard" (use forum-search how to do this) and with this goldcard pluged in, you can flash the WWE-RUU that Keeray posted earlier.

Some details about my phone:
Firmware Version - 2.1-update 1
Baseband Version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Software Number: 1.21.405.2
1. I had unbranded my phone using a goldcard when I bought it a year ago. Can I use the same goldcard to upgrade it to 2.2?
2. Can I use any ROM that contains 'RUU', 'Bravo', 'WWE' and 'Froyo' in the filename?
3. What's the best way to take backups of: Emails, SMS Messages, contact list and installed apps?
Thanks!
>1. I had unbranded my phone using a goldcard when I bought it a year ago. Can I use the same goldcard to upgrade it to 2.2?
Yes

I think so, as long as your Goldcard is installed. The Softwarenumber must be x.xx.405.x
>3. What's the best way to take backups of: Emails, SMS Messages, contact list and installed apps?
I use Titanium Backup Pro and SMS Backup and both served my needs well.

May I ask, do you have a Gmail account? Have you ever logged in through your Gmail App? If your answers are yes, you don't need to concern about your gmails and contact list, they will be restore from the Gmail's server.
SMS must be lost if you don't do any backups.
Why don't you backup all your dates before your upgrade? You can use the offical software to backup.

According to the Baseband Version of your phone, you may try this
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
It's the lastest version I can find. Remember to backup.
Have fun and good luck!
I used Mybackup Pro and installed the ROM recommended by Keeray. All seems to be working well. A big thanks to all of you!
You are welcome~!

If you had flashed "stock" 2.2, you should have the new bootloader, so it sounds to me that you've manually flashed a custom ROM.
Did you flash the new radio?

I got the stock rom from here:http://www.geekword.net/manually-install-froyo-htc-desire/

it's written that these radios need a rooted desire for those to work. However, a 2.2 froyo desire cannot be rooted yet, i have read.
What's your suggestion? Even if I can go back to 2.1, it is ok for me.

Please advice
I made a gold card and flashed the rom again..............now it's working. Thanks.
Only one problem: The application from market downloads to the phone but during installation the phone restarts and therefore no market application can be installed.
Going to ask a similar question in this thread... I've updated to 2.2 with the Stock HTC rom.
And I've had problems using my wifi connection, 3g and GPS works fine but Wifi simply doesnt seem to be able get running. (cant find any networks and it says it is unable to scan for networks and just turns off after 10 seconds, assuming it was on in the first place).
Would an upgrade of the stock HTC rom with gold card installed fix this issue?
As it is now it claims I have baseband version 5.09.00.20, which as far as I can tell is the newest.
I've got an HTC Desire not bought through any mobile provider and now running Froyo (sent OTA) and am UK based, in case that makes any difference.
What's the easiest and safest method to do this? Is there something I can use which is basically a one button click? Without having to resort to partitioning SD Cards etc... I've got a recent "My Backup Pro" backup but am guessing Rooting doesn't wipe the phone or revert back to Android 2.1?
Please note I've never Rooted (or Installed a Custom ROM) on either Android (or WinMob) before. I'd like to do this, so I can install SetCPU and hopefully increase battery life. I do work in 2nd line IT Support though, so am technically minded.
Thanks.
Subscribe to this question. I am in the same situation (but not in the UK) and thinking about rooting but too scared to go through a seemingly complicated procedure. Under Android software section in this forum I found threads discussing applications that can root phones. I wonder if anyone tried them on Desire? Also, can I root but still keep with the stock ROM? I don't think I want to start experimenting and changing ROMs. Thanks for your help.
Nice and simple - use unrEVOked 3.21
***BUT***
Before you do this it's best to check what ROM you're currently running on at present. To find this go to:
Settings>About phone>Software information>Software version
Make a note of the number (e.g. 2.29.405.2) and then go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
If you can see a file matching your version number download it as it means should you ever need to return the handset under warranty you can reset it to factory.
If there ISN'T a file matching your serial number then you need to think hard if rooting is worth the risk as until a backup RUU file is available you'll never be able to go back to stock

I've finally got around to doing this, so I can use SetCPU and Autostarts. I'll report back if battery life increases.
It couldn't simpler btw. Thanks.
p.s - My software version is 2.29.405.5, which is listed in that link. Also thanks.
Download the RUU from here, it's a better link (less prone to failing):

I need help in rooting my phone, I think my phone is not branded as it doesn't show any telco logo when I start the phone, so in that sense, do I need to create goldcard for my phone and what tool to root my phone? And do I need to install a new radio for my desire?
What rom till now is stable? Stable as in can receive sms normally and have google talk all these?
Can someone provide some inputs? Thanks and appreciate.

hi boy!!!
I estimate that you have specifically android 2.2.1...right?
i hope that your software version is adapted for your carrier.... and is not a WEE ruu... its normal... my DHD by default was been 1.33
u can try via htc sync and click in upgrade button and pray for it to work....
i know that some people was update succesfully his DHD with it...
or try to do it with the XDA style, lol.....(because for downgrade it directly from a official ru downloaded it´s impossible)
1-downgrading...(necessary)
2-rooting...(necessary)
3-install rom manager & CWM recovery (necessary)
4-eng-soff
5-radio s-off
6-cid-111111 (super-cid)
here there is information about it:

If your phone is unlocked and running a stock rom then you can use the RUU to upgrade.
I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
