Out of space? Lame - Desire General

Hey all. I have had my desire for about a week now and I'm already out of space. And using too much RAM. Is there anyway to get all my apps to run off the SD card. There must be a reason HTC provided me with a 8gb card. I'm tired of having to un install a app to install a new one.
Please help me out, or direct me to a thread where this is explained. Thanks in advance.

To run apps from sd at the moment you'd need to root. Froyo will bring a2sd but who knows when your operator will release it...

So what does that mean? I need to root my desire? With what Rom? I'm sure I can easily do that with the proper guide.
I can't believe I'm out of space already. This sucks. Omg

My suggestion to you is, Only have apps your need.
Rubbish I know but well...
The 8Gb card, in my opinion is more fore music and other general stuff like that.

You could try searching:
"Moving ANY app to SD on FroYo (or how to Enable all grayed out 'Move to SD' buttons)"
chuk

Uninstall the games you don't play.
I had Shoot U! And played that only a few times and that is moveable to SD.
More and more devs will move their games to SD but I like to keep a lean machine so Uninstall often.
I use no more than 3 separate apps per day and barely any games so my usage is different to yours but I have up to 30 installed apps and that is it. My mind boggles when people have more than 50 but I'm still running stock. Figure out what is important because that fart app you downloaded pales in comparison to the gas beasts I can generate sometimes.

This is good advice.
If you a little proactive with your application management, you can get by with an unrooted device.
For example, I like Google Earth for Android, but I seldom use it and it is a very large app. So, I keep the APK on my SD and when I want to use it, I install it, use it, and then remove it again. I do this even though I'm using Froyo Apps2SD, because if the app is installed it is still consuming space in the Dalvik cache.
The next generation of HTC Android phones won't be such an issue since they are equipping them with more internal memory, and I'd imagine these will largely render any form of Apps2SD obsolete.

Dave

It's easy to root. Search for Unrevoked 3. I have 250 mb of apps installed and still have 70mbs of free memory. Many custom roms set it up for you - you don't need to do anything.
I recommend the NextSense rom found in the dev section here.

Did u already do this? Its the SOLUTION to your problem. No root required, very easy to do, etc.

I tried this. It didn't work. I also partitioned the sd card, did whatever I found anywhere on the internet. There was some effect as I had more space for some reason but all of the apps stayed on the main memory. I also couldn't access the ext3 partition from linux, ooops android itself.
If it worked for you, could you please share your ROM, radio, recovery, root method and if you did anything else - partition sd or other?

[Q] Move to SD

I am running Froyo 2.2 rooted, but there are so many apps that just dont have the option to move to SD card which is very annoying considering the lack of space that the desire comes in terms of internal memory, with that said I have a lousy 2mb left on my internal phone drive, this is just nuts there has to be a way I can manually move these apps to the SD card? Anyone able to assist here?
never mind found out how to over come this, for anyone else with froyo take a look here, worked like a real treat! I now have over 40MB of phone storage

Or you could have used search first and found precisely the same information on these forums!

Any benefits of SD partitioning?

I Google's and became more confused on this. Is there any benefit to this other than if you somehow reach Max storage on the phone? So if I partition the SD do I have to us apps2sd? Can I just use titanium backup and put on SD card or does that not us the partition I created? Alot of apps don't work with move2sd app. Apps2sd isn't I'm the market. Also doesn't show much apps and I know the developer has to sign or do something so it will work.. bit don't want people to share for free. But titanium does it was any app.
From what I read this phone doesn't work like a computer with the memory. What I mean is if I use the system app and shows a list of apps running "if you can say running I'm not sure" its not really slowing my phone down. From what I understand is if I force close them I will use more power and CPU when my phone starts them back up...
So is there any benefit? Do I really need to force close any programs or apps that are running and I'm not using. Etc Gmail. I don't use Gmail. Just a example as I already deleted the apk.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No.generally you don't need to force anything to close. It is possible to come along a ****ty app that never sleeps, but that's rare.
Regarding partitioning for apps2sd, it is very highly unlikely that you need this on the evo or future phones. The benefit is being able to put apps on the card that disallow froyos ability to put apps on the card. You really don't have that many apps that don't allow it.
Check out "sdmove" in the market as the native way to move apps is annoying as ****.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah that app shows only 3 apps I can move while titanium I moved 16.. hit the 1700 mark with cm6 with stock kernel.

Should I un-partition my SD card
I have Apps2SD but I don't see the benefit of it. I just end up waiting longer for devs(like Virus) to work it into their latest releases.
Is there any substantial benefit of having my SD card partitioned and using Apps2SD?
(FYI i have a 16gb class6 card)
Thanks in advance.

* Native move to SD can't move everything (as already stated). Darktremor moves everything, automatically.
* Native move to SD puts everything on the main SD partition, and whenever you plug your Evo in in disk drive mode, the apps on the SD become unavailable. With Darktremor, they all still work, even when the Evo is in disk drive mode.

[Q] How much internal storage space do you have?

I have only 40mb free internal, yet I don't have many apps at all.
Twitter takes up 10mb, maps takes up about the same, FB the same. Contacts storage takes up 17mb. so already almost 100mb used?!
Is this normal? On 2.1 eclair I think I had 90mb free. does this space affect phone speed or only app storage?
cheers
P.S. I have moved some apps to SD when the option was available in "manage application" only 3 megs of apps moved over though.
28mb internal storage free.
I also moved everything possible to SD when it became available.
I had to uninstall flash player update because I went down to about 15mb
thanks for your reply Lothaen. I guess it's kinda the "normal situation" then. A pity they just couldn't have included 1gig internal for all this stuff.

i have 56.45mb and have 200-300 apps, 5 gameloft games at 10-15mb each, nfs shift at 30mbs rockplayer universal at 12mbs and lots more lol use apps2sd+ duuuude lol
Yes but then they wouldn't have had much left to offer for the desire hd xD Well at least they show that they are learning for those mistakes, but i myself just use old a2sd+ and i have no problems concerning space what so ever.
75.6 mb. free space and i install an app every time i feel like it without considering the space. Atm. i have around 80 apps installed and google earth + maps is some of them
cheers guys. I'll look up this apps2sd+. I guess apps to SD didn't really come with Froyo causeI only had the option to put 3 apps there. I was under the impression we could put anything on the SD. I guess it's this apps2sd+ thing I need to educate myself about.
thanks
I got my Desire shipped with 2.2.
When I try to export programs over to the SD card, they are greyed out. Is there any reason for that? Or how can I move them?
It is a little frustrating not having a lot of internal memory to work with. I thought with 2.2 you could move programs over to the SD card ???????

With the Google A2SD you can only move apps over if the developer has enabled it for A2SD. Otherwise you get a greyed out button.
If you want more space then rooting and going for a custom ROM with A2SD+ is the way to go.
As for the OP, Facebook is on the Desire so isn't part of the storage you install to unless you're still on Android 2.1 and you're on about the update.

[Q] Do I need apps2sd?

I have Titanium Pro and am still learning all the things it can do.
But, as I read forums I see a lot of people have apps2sd
Would getting apps2sd be redundant or will it do something that TP doesn't?
Apps2sd is totally different than using Titanium as far as moving apps. In a nutshell, apps2sd creates a partition on your sd card and allows you to run all of your apps from the sd, depending on how large the partition is. It pretty much "tricks" the android os into thinking that the extension is part of the os memory. If you go this route, make sure your ROM supports it.

Thank you agent
What's the advantages of using apps2sd?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
More space to run more apps and we all love apps don't we? lol
^^^yes... yes we do. I use apps2sd primarily and use titanium for the apps that say 'phone only' The more space, the merrier!

Rooting and low memory

I searched a good bit, but couldn't find the answer to this specific question. Will gaining root access get rid of the low memory error? I'd just ignore the error, except it keeps the gmail app from syncing. Sorry if it's a dumb question. I was hoping the 2.3 update would fix it, but it doesn't sound like it does, and now it's starting to sound like I may never get it! I may have to take the plunge and root....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Gaining root itself won't fix the error. However, many custom ROMs have it fixed. Not sure about the Sense ones, but the AOSP ones such as MIUI or CyanogenMod do.
Thanks for your response!

I don't think moving apps to SD works. I had it with a ROM I used and it's not an actual case of low memory. A ROM with the fix does work. I'm using one of WildStang's and it's working great.
Moving apps to the SD card will help (not fix) the issue on 2.3 roms because the .lib files are now moved to the SD card from the /data/data folder (they weren't on 2.2).
Once you get close to the 150mb limit in the /data/data folder you will start seeing the notification (or a bunch of force closes on AOSP roms)
Also the app "not enough space" can alleviate the problem, or an automated cache cleaner.

You mentioned the bunch of force closes on AOSP roms, I had this problem a few times with MIUI and CM7 where out of nowhere it would force close everything and the phone was unusable. Is this related to cache? I read that it might be corrupted contacts that caused the issue.
Man, I can't figure it out this time. Had the DI for 18 months, and I've always been able to fix this - facebook, contacts, or just trace it back to the most recently installed app. This time I can't figure it out. It's so frustrating - 18 months ago and went ahead and spent the extra money to get (at the time) the most powerful phone I could find as far as memory, and got the 32g card to go with it, so I wouldn't have to worry about this. Now I've got plenty of memory, but my phone doesn't think so!
I'm scared to death to root. I'd love to start messing with ROMs, but I'm scared to brick it, I'd be screwed.
Thanks for the responses....
possible fix
You should check out jermaine151's Stock+ version 2.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1260994. I can't personally vouch for it as he just released it and it's a little late to start reinstalling everything, but it looks promising.
This mod will fix the low space problems.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315372
I have been using it for about a week and no problems at all. Phone seems snappy and no annoying low space issue. It basically resizes the small partition to a bigger one. So no more low space notification.
