it says hero - 2.1
stock heros have 1.5 "modified" or something like that, right?
so why does it say 2.1?
and is it dangerous to try, and what's the result of this type of rooting?
EG: if I run this on my wife's stock 1.5:

I did the manually created goldcard method on my hero a ways back and don't want to do that again nor do I remember how I did it now. hoping this easy click method works, but not sure I want to try and bork my wife's phone.

so it will add root to the stock OS if I'm understanding right?
hmmm.... would it add a superuser app as well then? I mean, it must have to.
interesting... and then in theory I'd be able to flash a recovery onto her phone and do a full nandroid backup, and then flash froyo...

works perfectly on the hero. but doesn't include a SU app or busybox, so next step is download free superuser app from market and install it. that will let you install and run "rom manager" from clockworkmod, my personal favorite recovery, but amon-ra can no doubt be installed without too much trouble using the same app.
you're set, just need to wipe all and flash a new rom now. can't use titanium on stock rom without busybox so use "applist" apk from market to make text file list of installed apps so you can reinstall them after flashign a new rom. after that titanium will work great obviously.

This is a rooted, de-odexed, busybox, nano, ad-blocking hosts file, uncensored DNS resolv.conf but otherwise completely stock version of the 2.15.531.3 OTA for the T-Mobile G-2. This is not an update. It is a complete ROM.
I built this for my own use but anyone can take it and customize it as they see fit. I am a "Privacy and Security by Default" minded person so I have built it with a few alterations along those lines.
The ad blocking hosts file is to block known adware/malware from first boot. Updates to the hosts file as new threats are learned can be done by installing AdFree from Market or manually updating the hosts file yourself. I am not affiliated with the creators of AdFree in anyway. You can install it or not if you want or manually update your hosts file manually or not if you want.
The uncensored DNS resolv.conf I have included is because many ISP's and networks censor the Internet by controlling what you get directed to through DNS that is not what the official DNS record would require. They also hijack bad requests and typos through DNS redirects to their own search and ad pages. Google logs all DNS queries and what IP address it came from if you use the "open" Google DNS servers. I have included alternate secure and uncensored DNS settings as that is what I use myself.
I have now included a link to download a version of this ROM without those two customizations. I have not tested it myself but it should work fine for you if you choose to install it.

You will need to install the radio that came with this OTA manually before installing this ROM. The radio version to install is 12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3.

Rename the file to radio.img and install it from fastboot. You need the Android SDK tools and platform tools installed on your computer and the engineering hboot installed on your G2 to do this. Shutdown the phone completely. Then hold the trackpad button while powering the phone back on. Connect the phone with the USB cable. Open a command prompt and change to the directory where the radio.img file is. Issue the following command:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
Wait for the radio to update completely and successfully and then disconnect the USB cable. Select "REBOOT BOOTLOADER" and verify from the fastboot screen afterwards that the radio is installed. Then select "BOOTLOADER" and from the bootloader select "RECOVERY" to proceed to install the ROM.
INSTALL THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not responsible for what you do with this and there is no implied warranties and guarantees.
I recommend a full wipe/factory reset from within recovery before installing this just to be safe. ***This does not revert you to S-ON or un-root the G2.***
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS OF ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING BEFORE INSTALLING THIS.
I do not plan to do any customizations of this but I will try to answer any questions that may come up.
***Update: I may post a version without the uncensored DNS setting and ad blocking hosts file as it is a simple tweak and there seems to be a calling for it. Stay tuned...***

Hey, can you tell us how you temp-rooted? That is actually all I'm interested in; I've been running Visionary on 2.2 to temp-root on boot, and that serves my purposes. I'd just like to be able to keep doing the same thing, although I realize Visionary won't work, but would you be able to put together a Visionary-like app that does give us temp-root on the new 2.3.4?

In the DZ/G2 wiki are instructions for downgrading the 2.3.x factory installs using fre3vo to gain temp-root. As far as I know, there isn't any way to gain permanent root on an installed 2.3.x system.

I have a couple of questions. You say that we need to have a rooted phone already, but at the bottom you say that you recommend a full swipe/factory reset before installing this ROM. Wouldn't a factory reset get rid of the root and s-off?
Also, how do you install a radio and where would we get it from?

A factory reset will get rid of the entire ROM image on your phone. It will not change the s-off factor.

To make this a "turn-key" pure vanilla stock GB rom, can you include the radio that seems to be missing, take away AdFree, and that other thing with config file you mentioned (forgive my noobness) and make a "white-wall" clean stock rom that can be flashed using CWM?
I want to experience this "stock" for myself, but i'm from CM7 and don't have any experience with flashing radios, and this config, AdFree files.. I would like to simply download, do a nan-backup (of my old CM7 rom), then flash without having to worry about any of the other stuff.

I have updated the first post with additional information about the radio and some more links. Unfortunately, I do not know how to get the radio to update through recovery so it has to be manually installed separately.

Any alternate kernel can potentially break things as they aren't what the system is compiled to work with originally. HTC hasn't released the kernel source for this version yet to my knowledge so alternates that would be the most compatible won't be available until they do.
I just flashed this rom through clockwork without wiping anythingfirst. It does install as a clean rom just like a new phone. Is rooted, Very nice. Ididnt install the radio suggested as the one i hadinstalled was a newer one than listed.

Without the proper radio, you might run into issues with data connectivity and WiFi Calling and potentially battery life issues. Let us know what you find.

I suspect that is what the fotaBoot "file" is for. I think it forces reboot to bootloader to flash the firmware.zip. just a theory and keep in mind, my rooted rom broke everything but the bootloader.

It was my own attempt to make a rooted rom. I applied the system patches through CWM, modded the boot and recovery to use the new kernel, but did not flash the hboot nor radio. Stuck on boot screen with a broken recovery! It's still a work in progress.

FYI: If you are looking for the radio that came with this OTA, I put a link to it in the first post of this thread.
I rooted my phone using the wiki guide for Cyanogenmod, but now tried to return to stock and seem to be having problems.
Using ROM Manager, I reverted back to my backup, however I can't seem to get any updates. No notifications of an available update, and manually checking for one says my phone is up to date.
Before rooting I had downgraded so I know I'm not at the latest version.
I tried unrooting my phone by following a video saying to remove these files with a file manager :
system/bin/su
/system/binx/su
/system/app/superuser.apk (something like that)
There was no su file in /system/binx
Is there an easy way to just revert to factory settings, no root, and working updates?

you can try flashing the proper ruu via hboot. why not just flash a new rom alltogether? I mean you rooted your phone, are you not after superuser function? a better os? there are custom roms very similar to stock to pick from and also many that are far superior, either way...

I was indeed looking for superuser access, but was now giving the phone away to a family member who didn't have interest in anything special.
I also had trouble rooting it again after I deleted the files, but got it working after simply pushing the files back on, so I flashed the MIUI Rom which looks great and user friendly.
I can see Android v4.1.1 on System, About, but I totally forget what ROM I flashed. One of the more popular ones, last October or so. How do I tell what is on the phone?

Don't you have the rom zip saved? It should say what rom it is. Although you should know what you are flashing.

I would suggest searching the Q&A thread for all this. You should read up before you start installing roms or doing any mods to your phone.

Might I interject here? If the only reason you want to go back to stock recovery is to get the OTA updates, I personally don't think you need to. Typically, Freeza has the most up-to-date Stock, Rooted Rom over in his thread. In my case, he usually has it well before I get the OTA notification from Sprint. If you think his thread is daunting to look at, you really only want to flash one of the following (I always remove direct links to the Roms out of respect for the dev's):

The MC3 Rom is a leak of a new OTA that might come out soon (or it'll be incorporated in a future OTA). The MB1 Rom is the most current, stock Rom. All you have to do is flash it and you're updated. If you need help with how to flash it, you can look to my post over here. Since you're going from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2, I'd recommend a "clean install" (step 5 in my instructions) just to minimize the chance of Force Closes, but you should be good if you want to do a "dirty flash" (only wipe cache and dalvik cache). If you dirty-flash, though, any and all troubleshooting will boil down to doing a clean install and seeing if the problem persists.
Also, CNexus has written up a really good OTA Guide to help you understand the whole OTA thing more and to recognize your options. You can check out his post over here.

Edit: It might also be good to update your Recovery before proceeding. Depending on how old your CWM is, it might be best to get an updated one (with hopefully fewer bugs). Thankfully, Naddict has created updates that are flashable from the Recovery itself. All you have to do is download the one you want (I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.0, but CWM is fine, too) and flash it in your custom Recovery, then reboot into recovery again.

I took your advice and upgraded my ClockworkMod. (I also installed TWRP, which I think overwrote it, but that's another story).
I'm going to go over your post in more detail (hopefully) this weekend.
I tried flashing some different ROMs to see what they were like. I was not impressed, so I went back to stock.
Can you tell me something? If I use TWRP to back up everything, I still need to install GAPPS, right? Then I need to do something with GAPPS and Platinum Backup before I wipe/re-install to keep all/most of my programs/settings, right? Then run GAPPS again after I flash the new ROM?

Yeah, you can only have one recovery installed at once. I use TWRP, others use CWM. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter too much. They're both good and as far as I'm aware, the newest of each are relatively bug-free. The only thing is once you have backups for one, you can't restore them with the other. This isn't that big of a deal, but just an FYI.

I'll break your questions here:
As far as I'm aware, all TouchWiz Roms include GAPPS in them by default. Of the flip side, no AOSP Roms will include them. This is because Google has asked dev's to not include them (in a Rom) unless specifically approved by Google. Samsung has gotten that approval for their TW framework, so any Rom based on TW can (and do) include GAPPS. If you're in doubt and the Rom doesn't say, first re-read the thread, as it's a common question. Then you can just flash the Rom without GAPPS and load up your phone. If GAPPS is included, you'll have a play store. If not, then you can just reboot into recovery and install it. Easy as pie.
I believe you mean Titanium Backup (another precious metal). Using TiBk, I actually have an automatic restore done every morning at 3am. Then if I decide to flash a new Rom, I always have an up-to-date backup of my apps. I never restore system apps, as that's just asking for trouble when switching Roms. I always back up my messages and phone log, but nothing that's red in TiBk. And for most apps, you don't have to restore data (only the app). I only restore data for games and apps like Hulu so I don't have to log in again.

Yeah stock based roms will include GAPPS, AOSP roms cant because they arent officially licensed to distribute them...
As for the original question, I think I have it figured out. If you go to /system/build.prop and open that file, the great majority of devs will modify the relevant lines to the name of their custom roms. On cm roms theres a line called "cm.version=", which devs will usually modify that on a CM rom
The name is in there somewhere...could be changed on a couple lines, or on ALL the relevant lines, but it will be changed most of the time

All you need to do is follow the guide. You can download the MB1 firmware from freezas thread, and then flash an updated version of your rom. If you are on stock rooted, then you can flash one of freezas plain stock rooted roms over what you have (i would recommend a backup first though)
Just a small correction Gapps strictly refers to Google made apps (maps, play store, books, etc) you usually only flash these when working with AOSP roms. You sound like your talking about Touchwiz roms and thus your not loading all your apps through gapps, because Gapps are already included with Touchwiz roms. What you are referring to is reloading all your apps through Google Play Store and using the Google restore feature.

1) Backing up everything on my Galaxy S3
2) Installing other ROMs (sometimes stock, sometimes AOSP)
(side question: "stock" = "TouchWiz"???)
3) Magically re-installing *all* of my apps in the new ROM by clicking a single button
To do that, I'll need to use the "Google restore" feature?

Titanium backup is what I use. Paid version and you dont have to click ok for each app

You don't have to hit ok for each app when you use google restore the correct way. It automatically reloads your apps on your device. TB is a great also but never restore data it is the root of most issues caused when people use it.

I bought this sgh-T989 off a bum on the street corner.
Not stolen- got service rooted with towel root. The battery dies so quickly. Can i install xposed modules without a pc? Ive never had a rooted samsung before.
Im running 4.0.4. No pc at all.

First off, how can you tell it's rooted? Have you tried the Root checker from Playstore?
Second, yeah, it is possible to install xposed without a PC. All you need is to download the apk installer, download the correct version of the .zip file and flash it in recovery. After that, you just open xposed on your phone and start downloading modules.
But I would suggest before trying all this just flash back to stock with Odin, might fix your battery problems faster and better.

Edit: Oh and by the way, the hercules (S II) is known for being a battery hog, it's a GREAT device but battery life is really poor. I had to buy a bigger battery just to get decent battery life, but not by much.

I rooted with Towel Root. I remembered that it would root easily and safely phones built before the S 5.
I don't know how to install a custom recovery. Is this something I can install with Flashify or FlashFire? If so, can some post a walkthrough? That would be great.
I just bought a zte zmax pro, which is not rootable yet, and consider moving service back to the s2.

The ROM Manager doesn't work on my s2 ( the phone model selection crashes the device).
It is running 4.0.4 Android. The ROM manager is version 5.5.3.7
Should I be looking for an earlier version of the software?
Thanks for posting the instructions though. I'm happy to see there is a method that doesn't require a computer...

Sorry, I don't know what else could be done. I personally rooted and downloaded a custom recovery with a PC so I suggest you find a way to flash a custom recovery with a PC, it's just so much better and you have less possibilities of failing. The only other thing I would recommend would be to factory reset and try ROM Manager again, but I can't guarantee that will work.

First off, thank you ShaDis for your aid on this anachronistic thread and your patience
You are kickass.
I downloaded the ROM manager from the play store (before it was aptoide). It lets me do much more, as in choosing the phone model, and what version of clockwork mod should be installed. Should I use 2.x or 3.x, and the link you sent suggests clockwork touch recovery. Any thoughts? I will look for the ROM manager thread in the meantime.. Thank you.

I would go with 3.x, but it's up to you. Choose the one you find that works better for you. Hope everything goes well
