Flashing Recovery Problem!

Hey guys,
I am having trouble flashing a custom recovery (TWRP) to be specific on my brothers Note 2. I was able to easily do it with my phone but I didnt update OTA to the latest ATT software.
I have the latest samsung drivers installed too.
So in general.
1. My brother updated OTA
2. I use odin to try to flash TWRP via PDA
3. It says success but when I reboot into recovery it goes into the stock android recovery instead of the custom one
4. ??? perplexed

is your [brothers] phone rooted? (you didn't mention that in the post). if it is, the easiest way to install TWRP is to download GooManager from the Play Store and, once installed, choose Menu->Install OpenRecoveryScript.

He is not rooted. He is stock from AT&T but he said he did an OTA update a week or two ago.
I actually tried the GooManager to install TWRP but it said it installed twrp but it goes into stock android recovery
I'm not sure if this helps or not but when I load into stock android recovery it keeps "manually loading CSC"

so i take it [your] phone is rooted, because you have a custom recovery installed. my understanding is that the device must be rooted before you can install a custom recovery. that's why installing TWRP via GooManager didn't work.

what about ODIN doesn't it root the phone when you flash a custom recovery?
on my phone all I had to do was flash via twrp via odin and it did everything for me...
this isn't the case for my brother's phone so im a little confused

ODIN doesn't root your phone. it's the package/file that you flash with ODIN that roots your device. you didn't mention the method you used to root your phone.

flash what via TWRP? you need to reference the methods you used to flash your device, e.g., link to post. it's difficult to help without having more info. in my case i used the CF Root method which does root your phone by using ODIN to flash a package that installs SuperSU binary and APK (app that provides root) and a Stock recovery. This took less than 30 seconds. afterwards, i added my GMail account to my device, installed GooManager from the PlayStore and then used GooManager to install TWRP. hope this is helpful.

I see. Sorry for not being specific
When I worked on my phone. I installed the latest samsung drivers on the main website, used Odin 3.07, flashed TWRP 2.3 by PDA, and it was rooted and the custom recovery worked awesome (I did it similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFHZ535L7is)
However this process does not work with my brothers note 2. Which is why im confused.... I assuming TWRP auto rooted for my phone but it didn't for my brother's phone?
I will definitely give your method a try and post back. Thanks for putting up with a newbie like me! :laugh:

no worries... i'd hate to see you fubar your brothers phone, lol. anyway, the method used in that video appears to be created by ChainFire for the N7100, which is the international version of the Note 2. the method i referenced - also developed by ChainFire - is specific to the AT&T and Canadian versions of the Note 2. if there's one thing I've learned in my years on xda, it's to make sure that you play with stuff that's compatible with your device. several of today's devices go by the same consumer friendly name (e.g.,Galaxy S 3, Note 2) but have different internals (e.g., chips). if you flash an incompatible ROM, you could end up with a nice paperweight. hope you and your brother enjoy your phones.

I flashed CF-autoroot, TWRP, and a custom rom! Everything works great!

[Q] which recovery after root?

Howdy, I plan on rooting my tablet in a few days. The instructions say to root, then, flash stock recovery. Is flashing the stock recovery necessary if i plan on using goo to install twrp recovery prior to flashing cleanrom on my device?
Also, the cleanrom thread says to flash the appropriate version of twrp. Am I to assume the latest version on goo is the ticket for that?
Also, while the dev has indicated there will be further versions after 1.2, can I expect to simply download updates, or expect to flash new versions every time? I guess this particular question doesn't really matter I'm just interested.
And finally, has anybody used heimdall with any success with the p600? Google says no...
I would have posted this on the clean rom thread but was not allowed since I have not had enough posts yet. moving this to there would not hurt my feelings.
I appreciate any and all help and of course feel appreciation and give thanks to the developers who have put in such great effort. Thank you.

That's a lot questions! Lol.... here's two answers:
If you want to flash CleanRom, then you don't need to root your stock rom, just use Odin to flash TWRP and that will either let you install CleanRom or let you install SuperSU (root). You can the recovery from their website.
I'm on the P600 and the goomanager didn't install the recovery correctly, so I had to flash with odin.
I don't know about Heimdal. Good luck on your ten posts

My understanding is that root is neccesary to flash twrp. If that is not the case, they why use Odin at all?
Heimdall is a program reverse engineered to work on Samsung devices. Potentially more stable than odin. Open source. I use a linux box but will have access to a windows box in a week or so.

Furthermore, for verification, super su does not root your device, it only manages the permissions of those programs that need root access. Can somebody else chime in for verification?

No, you CAN flash recovery without rooting, and if your not rooted then TWRP asks if you'd like to install SuperSU and root that way. I guess you don't have to believe me though

that sounds great but doesn't TWRP need root in order to be installed? my understanding is yes. If not I should be able to install it using Goo manager. from what I've read the developers for GooManager are very serious and would not allow a non working application to remain in their program.

You wont need to root if your intent is to just flash my ROM.
Appropriate version would be 2.6.3.3
As far as updates / patches... Depends on the issue. Mostly do full updates if something changes. If its a bug fix then I would just do a patch.
Hemidall? No, never tried it.
Basically to flash a custom ROM you just need to flash TWRP using Odin then flash the ROM using TWRP.
You dont techincally need to root unless you want to stay stock and have root. But that is no fun!
Also, the goo.im app does not work with this device so you have to use Odin manually (for simplicity).

I read the TWRP thread, and others are having problems installing through goomanager. I also wanted to install it that way, but it wouldn't work. But it didnt work. It also wouldn't flash through the stock recovery. Hence, odin.

thank you for the clarification! in order to flash TWRP in Odin do I simply use the AP slot as you would to flash autoroot by their directions?
one of the things thats tripped me up is that on the TWR P site as well as in Google Play it says you must have a rooted device. This would suggest that in order to get TWRP on your device it would already have to be rooted. it seems strange to me that the tablet will allow odin to install it on a non rooted device.
hoops I guess. So being a non Windows user, that is not familiar with the Windows operating system,( bet you don't hear that everyday) ,I would suppose the order would go something like this.
1 download Samsung drivers from kies.1
2. Download TWRP from site for odin.
3. Open odin.
4. go to download mode on device.
5. Plugin device and wait for it to be recognized.
6. Drag the Twrp zip for odin to the AP slot, enter,
7. Wait for it to .......?
8. Reboot.
9 download the cleanrom rom.
10. Reboot into recovery
11. Installcleanrom
12 enjoy.
a couple of other questions concerning the SD card. Should I leave it in during any or all of these processes? I've seen where other people have had problems with their SD card not being read is this due to it not being installed when they install clean rom? I really do appreciate all the help.
not breaking my device by doing something stupid is paramount. Lol! as I will be using my daughters computer any other information regarding the installation of the Samsung drivers or Odin would be much appreciated I do not want to hurt her computer.

I kept my SD card installed while flashing TWRP in Odin and had no problems. If you're worried then take it out. As far as Odin goes... run it as an admin and after connecting your Note (in DL mode) just click on "AP" and navigate to the directory where you saved the TWRP file. From there just hit "start" and your good to go. Odin isn't gonna mess anything up on your daughters pc and if you have a copy of the stock recovery just reflash it if you run into problems with TWRP. Also, read through all the different threads/watch YouTube videos. Most of this has been covered many times over and you can see what success or problems others have had.

MK1 and root

Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone could help me a little. I just bought this tablet (2014 version) and it has MK1.
I am trying to read information on how to root it but can't figure it out. I tried to flash autoroot with odin but it errored. I didn't find mk1 autoroot anywhere so i used autorootp600.mj4.tar.md5. Is there autoroot for MK1 and i can use? Also i guess i will need to have custom recovery file for my stock OS, where do i get that?

P600 (wifi only)
P601 (3g)

They have different chipsets and different root methods.
[e] I see you have found the correct version if you want to get OTA updates you need to flash stock recovery so your device status is not custom. But it basically doesn't matter since you can always flash updates through odin. You may choose a custom recovery that offers you a lot of cool features instead.

I believe...... so you can still get OTA updates and some functions like All Share Cast may not work if you don't.

The thing is, even if you have stock recovery but modify your system in other ways like uninstall alot of bloatware or use busybox your status will be custom anyway so I recommend a custom recovery for the safety of using backups etc.

My device is Wifi only so SM-P600 (mk1). I rooted it but haven't flashed with stock recovery. Would you guys recommend i do a custom recovery or keep it stock? Where do i get stock recovery from? i can't seem to find it.

Ok, that makes sense i went though it. So i see that there is ClockMod and TWRP and GooManager, do they do pretty much the same thing?

So as far as Roms go, i see that in Development section there are few ROMs available but some say they are for MJ9 or ML1, i cannot use those on my MK1 right? Do ROMs from note 10.1 (2013) work on this device? Is there a list of ROMs that would work on my device.

Goomanager is an app use it to flash twrp recovery.
TWRP and clockmod (CWM) they are 2 different tools but have the exact same functions, just a user choice. Sometimes custom rom preferred one over the other. I like TWRP a bit better (easier).

is there a way to check if it is rooted or not?

[Q] Root without installing custom recovery g3??

I can see from the questions that you can flash SuperSU and get root without installing a custom recovery on the One Mini but is this possible to do on the LG G3?
I've searched and I can't come up with anything.
I want to root simply to remove apps so I don't want to install CWM/TWRP as having a custom recovery annoys the HELL out of me. I don't understand why a custom recovery is needed? Can't the one that comes with the phone do everything those can?
IMO, they are just there cause they look prettier. LOL
Anyway, I have the T-Mobile G3. I had it rooted but unrooted to install latest update (that was hell, turned out my drivers were not updated). I used PurpleDrake last time but it installed TWRP and as I said, I don't want TWRP.
Any ideas?

I have the T-Mobile G3 as well. I rooted and got Supersu way before installing TWRP! It's possible. TWRP is a custom recovery that allows you to backup your entire phone (including software) in case you make a mistake. It also allows you to "flash" things to your phone. It has a lot of features and is needed to install a custom ROM or update that custom ROM.
You don't need it, but I would suggest it highly. The ability to backup everything is a must when you're doing something to your phone. It essentially prevents you from bricking your phone -- which I did. However, I made a full backup before deleting everything, so all I did was go into TWRP and undo the bricking by restoring a backup.
You can root your phone without a custom recovery. Then you can go into the play store and download SuperSu, then you can download Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware. A custom recovery isn't needed for any of this.

[Solved] Need help with installing Cyanogenmod (Without a PC if possible)

Hi all, new to all of this. Please keep this in mind as you read this thread.
Well first of all I have been reading about Cyanogenmod and how it helps saves battery. I also wanted to use cputuner to overclock my phone a little. I have in the past rooted this phone and installed cputuner not knowing that it could damage your phone if you didn't have a custom kernel that supported overclocking. After I found that out I uninstalled it and unrooted in fear of damage to my phone. Anyways I have a few questions and was looking knowledge, resources, and help about a few things.
Questions:
Is installing a custom rom and things needed to install a custom rom possible with a PC?
Can I safely reroot my device since I unrooted through #SU?
What do I need to do besides reroot my device in order to install a custom rom? (Cyanogenmod)

Firmware 4.4.2 KitKat
Device was rooted before using towelroot but I unrooted using #SU.

Ok. To install cm with no computer use, I'd say the easiest way would be to get root again with towelroot. Then install flashify from the play store. use flashify to install a custom recovery. I prefer TWRP.
Next download cm rom and Gapps. Follow the installation instructions for the rom. Generally that's boot into recovery, wipe dalvik, cache, system, and data, flash rom, flash Gapps, then reboot. You can do this from the internal SD, it won't erase that when you wipe. However, an external SD can be really handy for getting out of a jam.
If you haven't done it, a little research on the forums here about backing up your efs might be in order before flashing roms. Hope you never need it, but it could make life easier someday.
Read, read, read the forum here. This was just a real brief overview. If you don't quite understand any part, it should at least help you with what to search to learn what you need to know.

I would like it to be 4.4.2, not 5.X.X. And I also need the appropriate gapps file. If you don't know I still thank you for the info friend!

Chances of bricking should be slim as long as you follow the instructions closely.
CyanogenMod 11 is based on Android 4.4.X, Kitkat. Nightlies can be found here or here.
Snapshot releases, sometimes called monthlies, can be found here.
There are options regarding Google Apps( GAPPS ) the choices from CM are here.
Some prefer the GAPPS packages provided by Paranoid Android, look here.

Thanks so much! Have been researching like crazy and odds seem pretty good. Problem is I've hit a ditch headfirst. I can't reboot using towering because I updated my kernel sometime through the period when my phone was unrooted (idk when or how this was done.) The date is apast june the 3rd and i read it won't work apast that date. Is there a workaround for this? I have no PC so I would like a non-PC method if possible. I just wanted to say I have tried all the modstrings for toweroot and still nothing.

The June 3rd date probably only counts if you took all of the OTA updates, okay rechecked your OP and I see that you are on NE4. I recall that either the NE4 or the NJ1 update patched the kernel to block TowelRoot. I take it when you say Firmware 4.4.2 KitKat you mean baseband, modem, and Samsung stock rom.
With SuperSu you can re-root using it, assuming you unrooted but did not remove the app. I don't know if the same applies to th SU app that comes with CWM. You could try. If you did go back to stock rom and properly formated you may no longer have su on your phone.
Yes, if you have a custom recovery on your phone you should be able to re-root without a PC. Search for the zip version of SuperSu, put it on an external sdcard, and flash it through the recovery. Without a custom recovery I'm not sure of other options not requiring root that do not involve a PC (Windows or Linux) or a Mac. Apps like Flashify require root, so will not work for you at the moment.

The June 3rd date probably only counts if you took all of the OTA updates, okay rechecked your OP and I see that you are on NE4. I recall that either the NE4 or the NJ1 update patched the kernel to block TowelRoot. I take it when you say Firmware 4.4.2 KitKat you mean baseband, modem, and Samsung stock rom.
With SuperSu you can re-root using it, assuming you unrooted but did not remove the app. I don't know if the same applies to th SU app that comes with CWM. You could try. If you did go back to stock rom and properly formated you may no longer have su on your phone.
Yes, if you have a custom recovery on your phone you should be able to re-root without a PC. Search for the zip version of SuperSu, put it on an external sdcard, and flash it through the recovery. Without a custom recovery I'm not sure of other options not requiring root that do not involve a PC (Windows or Linux) or a Mac. Apps like Flashify require root, so will not work for you at the moment.

Thanks for the info, sadly I did uninstall #SU. Here is a ss of my modem info and such. I think it pretty much confirms I have the NJ1 version but I need you to confirm that.

I'm stuck.
You can install a custom recovery without having root, if you have a PC. You would use either Odin, Heimdall, or maybe adb.
You can install a custom recovery without a PC if you have root. You would use an app Like Flashify, Rom Manager, or Goo Manager (if it still exists).
You can flash a rom without a PC if you have a custom recovery, root is not needed.
Some roms, usually stock, can be flashed without a custom recovery if you have a PC.
I don't know the solution until you have access to a PC. I could see it being possible using a live USB with persistence of a Linux distribution, but you still have need for a PC. It's been a while since I created a live USB. The method I used required a small installation on the PC. so I don't see this as an immediate solution for you.

Oh sorry. I don't think towelroot works once you're on nj1, unless it has been updated.
If you get access to a PC, rooting is still fairly easy. You can use download mode and odin or heimdall to flash a custom recovery (be sure to uncheck reboot if using odin, or be really ready to pull battery). Don't let your phone reboot normally, you'll have to pull battery once odin is done.
Reboot to custom recovery, then flash supersu and you'll be rooted again, and set up to do whatever you want with your phone.

Thanks all for your help. I have decided I'm gonna give C-F Root a try as it seems very easy, then use Flashify to get CWM. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no boot loader for my model type right? Couldn't seem to find anything on the subject except the Verizon variant. I'm gonna still need help deciding which gapps to flash as I'm gonna flash the latest Cyanogenmod monthly build. Is there anything else to be aware of when using a new Rom?

excuse for butting in .... but if you dont know your bootloader/modem info. here is an app called 'samsung info' that should tell you.
your question "...... but theres no bootloader for my phone model right?" kinda worried me. its important to know because they should match AND trying to downgrade can brick your device. on the plus side ; i've never seen a custom ROM include bootloader/modem in it.

As mrrocketdog stated, the Samsung Info app will tell you your bootloader and modem. If what you previously stated is correct, they should both be NJ1. You can get the same info by issuing these commands in a terminal emulator on the phone:

Appreciate the butting in! You may have just saved me from bricking my phone lol. Maybe I need to do a lot more research because that just lost me. So how do I tell that my phone is equipped with a boot loader? And if it is how do I disable it? I read that in order to flash a new Rom the boot loader must be disabled. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I'm no where near the point of flashing a new Rom (Cyanogenmod) but this is a great furniture reference to me.

every phone has a bootloader , two if i'm not mistaken. the one you're concerned with comes already unlocked on the good 'ol S3. (i bricked my first s3 trying to 'unlock' the bootloader). just find out bootloader/modem version (see posts above) to make sure they match (to avoid issues later) and just dont ever try to downgrade.

You have lifted a burden off my shoulders friend! Ever since I wanted to flash a custom Rom I've been worried if my phones bootloader was locked! I can now be at ease now that I know its unlocked. Will check upon that info about bootloader/modem.

Is there a reason you can't use a PC to install a ROM?
I'm asking because I also do not know of a way to install a ROM without having root.
If you are able to root, you could try using the CM installer again.

Those are the latest versions of the bootloader and modem. You will be good for CM 12 or CM 11, and other custom ROMs based on CM. Older versions will work with them, but you probably need to edit the updater-script. (The older versions are not likely to include the NJ1 versions in the checks as they were not out when the ROMs were last updated.) NJ1 will also work with any of the ROMs based on the KitKat TouchWiz releases by Samsung.
As soon as you can find a PC to borrow you should be in business. Any chance of using one at a public library?

Appreciate all the help you gave me too friend, providing the links to cm and gapps, gonna borrow my friends laptop Sunday and try to root flash C-F Root through Odin. Thats the part that scares me but I should be good as people has confirmed it works for NJ1. Wish me luck friend. Would you recommend installing CM12? I personally like kit Kat and I know CM11 is based on that but is CM12 better? I guess its based on Lollipop
