Hey, its been a while since ive checked the forums and the progress of everything, and am really glad to see what I've come back to. Im very impressed with the progress so far. I just did the Unrevoked forever last night and now have s-off. My question or concern is...
Currently my phone has the original stock 2.1-update 1 firmware, with original stock rom. I am running the Hydra kernal v0.7 overclock with undervolt 1.113 w/n. My H-boot is 0.77.0000 and radio is at 1.00.03.04.06 with custom recovery 2.5.0.5.
I'd like to upgrade my radio to the 2.15xxxxx but im not sure if the kernal will work with it or what steps I should do first. Should I load the lastest kernal the way my phone is now, and then flash the radio? Or do I need to be running a 2.2 froyo rom first? Im not sure what exactly is compatible. I would have liked to wait for the ota but its taking forever and I want to try out froyo. Thanks.
I'd probably start off by doing some research and read all the 8 biazillion threads already open like this and then next make a note to post in the general section next time instead of development.
kthxbye

I guess we'll have to wait it out and see. I thought I was being specific and it would have been a simple answer. I guess more and more threads might just pop up on this then.
The way I went from stock to Sky Raider 2.5 was:
Install new rom, kernel, radio update.
I did this all at once, but you don't need to do the kernel update right away. Right now I've using Sky Raider 2.5.2 Sense and it's pretty awesome. Good luck to you and remember to nandroid backup. Backups never hurt anyone!

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Ok I will check those out. Thanks
And thanks spalding for starting this thread. I think it helped me in my decision to root!

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.

I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.
I know this has been asked a hundred times. Just wanna check on the best method for rooting with my software configuration.
Software #: 3.70.651.1
Hardware Version:.0003
I am pretty familiar with adb and rooting Heros via CMD so if I could use a method like that, it would be great. So in essence if its possible to RUU back to an older rom version to root that way, I would prefer.
Thanks.
the hboot version you have will determine which method you can use to root your phone...since you have a hardwear version 0003 and sfotware 3.70 i am assuming you have hboot 2.02 or 2.10
check your hboot to make sure by going into bootloader...
here is the guide for root with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
if you have a different hboot let me know and i will direct you to the proper thread to root

How did you do it?
I had it rooted and had problems with a rom so I flashed a factory rom back on it and it updated to the GB OTA but I never turned the s-on. Of course that was before I knew we couldn't get a working root. I have tried everything possible I can think of to get it rooted again. This is why I said if need be I would send to a dev to see what they can do with it since it does have s-off.

If you were S-OFF before GB, there's no problem. If you weren't S-OFF and you updated, there's no solution yet.
I currently have CWM 2.5.0.7 and I notice on the "Everything Desire" thread that the current version is 4.0.0.5 so mine is well out of date.
Any benefit to updating to this latest version over the version I have? If so will I have to re-unroot to install the newer CWM?
CWM is generally outdated recovery, try one from my signature.

k3lcior, please stop telling people, they should flash the recovery in your signature, especially in cases like this. You do this in nearly every thread about recovery questions and this is not the kind of helping here on xda.
Furthermore, you should indicate it could be that your recovery can only be flashed if one is s-off. At least this is so referring to desire s, so I guess it's so for the desire, too.
At long last, I totally agree with erklat according to his opinion about your words "sent with smoke signals" at the end of your posts.

Actually this recovery fixed a problem with bootloop after partitioning SD with CWM for LOADS of people so i dont see why i should not suggest it aslong it works and fix the problem?
I'm not even mentioning features like converting ext3 -> ext4 without data loss, get a grip!

When flashing another recovery can fix a problem, you are absolutely right. But in threads like this, where one asks about the advantages of a newer version from the recovery it's not that good to say "this recovery is outdated. Flash the one in my signature", because it does not answer the question.
I do not say your recovery is bad. I do not know the features of this recovery, so cannot utter an opinion about it. From the feedback it gets it seems to be very good. I only want to say, it might be good if you bring the time when you tell people to flash this recovery into question. Nothing more!

Searched a little and I could find out any benefit. I would say: As long as you do not have any problems with your version or missing some things, which the newer version has, stay with it.
i thougth the same as you, i was on 2.5.7 and thought im well out of date, flashed the latest 4.0.5 with the flasher thing and thougth happy days, flashed a new splash screen while i was at it, dont know the difference tho yet

Keep us posted in this thread if you see any difference (good or bad)
EDITED: Just out of interest, where did you dl the latest version from? The Everything Desire thread link shows the new version but is a link to another thread that only appears to show a version 3 and not the latest version 4.

Actually this recovery fixed a problem with bootloop after partitioning SD with CWM for LOADS of people so i dont see why i should not suggest it aslong it works and fix the problem?
I'm not even mentioning features like converting ext3 -> ext4 without data loss, get a grip!
And no, you dont have to be S-OFF to use it.
I also dont get whats wrong with my sig on XDA App but w/e.

I'm with Matdroid on this one. 2.5.0.7 causes no bootloops for certain. It is the last definitely stable cwm version and I regreted multiple times for so called upgrade, which was a step or few of them backwards.
You are part right about partitioning. There are tools partitioning should be done with so that part can't tip the favors of one recovery over the other, especially since doing exactly that what you count as plus, causes bootloops in 90% of the cases.
Radios and recoveries which are not broken need no fixing.
