[Q] Rooting Evo with New Firmware - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this has been asked a hundred times. Just wanna check on the best method for rooting with my software configuration.
Software #: 3.70.651.1
Hardware Version:.0003
I am pretty familiar with adb and rooting Heros via CMD so if I could use a method like that, it would be great. So in essence if its possible to RUU back to an older rom version to root that way, I would prefer.
Thanks.

the hboot version you have will determine which method you can use to root your phone...since you have a hardwear version 0003 and sfotware 3.70 i am assuming you have hboot 2.02 or 2.10
check your hboot to make sure by going into bootloader...
here is the guide for root with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
if you have a different hboot let me know and i will direct you to the proper thread to root

firmware too new?
I am trying to root my EVO 4G HBoot 2.16.0001 and after running unrevoked I keep getting a message "firmware too new". I've already done the factory reset and it hasn't helped. Any ideas?

YOU CANNOT ROOT THE NEWEST OTA! There are over 60 threads about this, if you would have taken 10 seconds to look, you would have found your answer. And FYI, you dont need to revive an 8 month old thread...

Get in line like everyone else with 4.22 or 4.24 waiting for a new root method.

As everyone else has said, you will have to wait until a developer or person in general finds out a way to root the latest firmware. No root method for now, though there is a temp root method in the Android Development forum for the HTC EVO 4G

I'm usually a patient person, but, even, I am getting a little annoyed by all the (what seems obvious to us) questions about rooting hboot 2.16 and gingerbread.

All I'm saying is that instead of being intimidating, be kind. He brought up an old thread about rooting new firmware(maybe he searched using tapatalk?). If he would have made a new thread in dev section then a little flaming is pretty much required

And no, he didn't do a search. If he did, he would have found the 60 or so threads that answered his question. And if for some reason he didn't find his answer, he didn't need to revive an 8 month old thread that has nothing to do with his question.

Need Goldcard Info from a DEV

Ok... so there is some chatter as of late in the thread about "no known way to root 2.2" with regard to the goldcard.
There is no specific information in the list of things tried with regard to the goldcard method.
Considering this was one of the original ways to root... and that it supposedly bypasses signed checks, is there any reason why the gold card cannot work to downgrade the OTA 2.2? Or, if not downgrading, what about straight across with 2.2 rooted image on the goldcard?
Could someone give some specific details about what they have done with goldcard attempts so we know if this is a viable option or not?
Really?
No one knows?
http://www.knowyourcell.com/htc/htc-evo-4g/evo-4g-guides/463925/how_to_root_the_htc_evo_4g.html
This has been done before... has it been done since 2.2?
Hmmm looking into this now to see what can come of it. Will be getting a 2.2 evo from asurion anyday now.
And here is the info on how to make one...

I noticed that... but that's only because this was first done wat back in the day. That thread is reference to that time. There is no information in there about whether this has been tried with an image today. What I am wondering is... what happens if someone takes one of the new rooted roms and load those from the goldcard. That would re-grant root... then we should be back in business.

You are absolutely correct. You have the new OTA update and a root method has not been exploited yet. Unfortunately, you are going to have to wait until the devs have the kernel source to come up with an unlock procedure.
Lol if your on 2.2 your good to root if you did the OTA you will have to wait till a root comes out for it the 2.3.

[Q] Gonna take a dive and root my evo.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004

Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

How did you do it?
I had it rooted and had problems with a rom so I flashed a factory rom back on it and it updated to the GB OTA but I never turned the s-on. Of course that was before I knew we couldn't get a working root. I have tried everything possible I can think of to get it rooted again. This is why I said if need be I would send to a dev to see what they can do with it since it does have s-off.

That's like bragging that I can get into my apartment. Sure, I have a key to the door, which helps.
If you were S-OFF before GB, there's no problem. If you weren't S-OFF and you updated, there's no solution yet.

[ANSWERED] Rooting with HBoot 6.17.0001

Hello everyone,
Recently, I lost my phone so I had to switch to my old HTC CHero, when I found my HTC Evo I tried to change my phone but Sprint noticed that I had rooted so I had to unroot to get my service back. Now I am stuck at HBOOT 6.17.0001 and I don't know how to go back to 2.16 so that I can root again, unless there is a way that I have not found yet, however I have scoured google endlessly today.
My request is that someone teach me how to downgrade to 2.16 or help me root in 6.17.
THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME! PROBLEM SOLVED!

Alright, I will try that.
EDIT: This will not work because the earliest HBOOT it works for is 2.16.
EDIT: I am now looking for an RUU to fix my HBOOT.
You actually have Hboot 2.16. Your Hboot was just edited to read as 6.17 during the unroot to trick the phone. You need an RUU with firmware 4.24, 4.53, or 4.54. 4.54 would be best, but the others should work as well.

Does that mean that RUUs don't work? I am confused with your wording.
Just for future reference, you don't have to un-root your phone to get it activated (or re-activated, in your case). You just need to be running a Sense ROM that allows you to update your profile, PRL, etc

Only the Hboot matters, not the radio. You might be better off with a PC36IMG version of the RUU found here.

Will do. Thanks for this. I'll report back in a little.
EDIT: I have successfully downgraded to HBOOT 2.16 thanks so much!
So... I've been searching for a little over a week now -this is as close as I have come to finding the answer to my problem (same as the original post). Since the link above is a dead end, is there any suggestion for me? I wish I didn't have to ask, it seems like most people are punished for asking. But man, I've been searching my butt off, with no clear result. If you can, and will help: "THANK YOU". If you've ever helped someone in the past, and they didn't say it: "THANK YOU!"

The file above can always be posted again under another link if you need it. The link is only dead because the file was moved, not deleted.

WOW! thanks for the reply Shortydogg! i really appreciate it. it didnt take though. i think this one is a done deal. i can either leave the phone as is (which aint bad at all), or send it out in the mail to somebody that knows what the EFF this dood did to my htc, and how to correct it.
btw, i "THINK" the error was 717. not positive but i do know it wasnt 140, but started out with a seven (too pissed to really look at it when it poped up! hahahaha)
right on for the assist bro! have a great week end!
