Are you on ChiefzReloaded's OTA ROM or just SlideMeRoot?
Do NOT update if you are on either, but we need to talk if you're getting an OTA on Chiefz's OTA ROM (will probably be Froyo Espresso)

My wife's slide just got the firmware update notification on SlideMeRoot5r1, but with Chiefz radio update. Can someone give me an idea how to check the version? Or rip it out? Yes I'm a noob with adb, but I can read instructions. How do you think I rooted this thing in the first place!?

It seems like you're both on SlideMeRoot then, download ChiefzReloaded's OTA ROM and flash it and you'll be on the latest version of Espresso
I thought it might be that but wasnt sure and just wanted to make sure it wasnt FROYO.
Thanks for the info

The latest known Espresso firmware version is 1.35.x i forget the rest. I know when the phone officially came out it was version 1.27.x
I just had this update being pushed to my phone. I removed the battery just to make sure it didn't get applied. Does anyone else know if it auto-applies?
It could very well be Froyo since T-Mobile said mid/late August.
I'm going to take the risk and let it download, then pull the zip. (Since I'm one of the couple developers left in this community... someone has to do it )

Updates don't automatically apply, even if they are completely downloaded to /cache.
UPDATE: I don't think this is anything special. I think this was somehow triggered by people running the beta (improperly labeled by Eugene as "ENG") bootloader for our phones. Version says "1.26.531.1 CL174750 release-keys" and the dates in the archive seem to support the fact that it is from MAY, 2010. Looking into it further just to make sure.
EDIT: DO NOT APPLY THIS UPDATE!
EDIT2: This looks like an attempt by T-Mobile to fix root bugs in the older versions of phones running BETA ( < 1.35.x) bootloader. DO NOT APPLY THIS UPDATE.
My wife is getting notifications on hers. She is on eugenes Rom, slidemeroot I believe. I just wantto watch this thread so I know what to do here.

Working on that. Hopefully I'll have an update to counter this "soon". By "soon" I mean: when it's ready - since I'm currently at work that may not be for a while.
I just got that update and I felt like a dare devil and applied it..it rebooted into recovery then the cellphone image apeared and a green loading bar underneath it ..it loaded about halfway then stoped. A question mark appeared were the phone icon was then rebooted..nothing happened. My phone is still rooted and non of my setting changed. Just thought I would throw that info out there.

my computer wont detect my myTouch Slide when im trying to root it. It wont show the "device is offline" after i put it in recovery mode after i typed in loop. Does anyone know why thats happening
Type in loop? Not sure why do that, but to mount your phone with adb for rooting you should stay off with the command 'adb devices'

I think he's talking about running the loop.bat file. It loops the 'adb devices' command. You might remember it from the original root method written by Eugene.
For the question: Did you 'cd' to the sdk tools directory? If you want to know about that look in the "slide rom bible" (search xda for it) and find the original slide rooting method written by Eugene. Read it, watch the vids, and you'll learn all this stuff. You can't use his method now since your slide has the tmobile update.
yeah i was doing it watching the video too and yeah i cded by doing CD C:\android-sdk-windows\tools and like i did loop then went into the fastboot thing and did recovery and instead of saying offline devices it just saud "List of Devices Attatched" and under it its supposed to say offline device cuz i saw it from the video but its just a blank spot
The loop method NO LONGER WORKS AFTER THE LATEST SOFTWARE UPDATE. If you got your slide after August 13, you have the new software update. The ONLY working method with the software update is nbetcher's.

If you can access download mode, it's nothing serious.
Head into http://sammobile.com or http://samsung-updates.com and look for your phone's model name. They have firmware for pretty much any device so hopefully they have some for yours.
So the only thing that freaks me out is all these region codes... I dont see one for USA...Now what lol

I have the exact same phone and the exact same problem. Kies (via USB) recognizes there is a SPH-L520 connected but won't actually connect to it. I asked Samsung for the appropriate drivers (none are listed on the webpage for the device) but Samsung says there aren't any drivers for the SPH-L520. Kies does connect my SPH-L520 and my PC via WiFi, though. And, despite having enabled Developer Mode and USB Debugging, Kingo fails every time. Any ideas?
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
It is also where Kingo originally got their method from, I wouldn't trust them too much if I were you. The best thing about the above method is, if it can't root the phone, it won't touch anything. If it can - it won't trigger the Knox. I tried on my JB 9190 and works. Unless you have a locked bootloader... that would complicate things.
hello guys is there a way to unlock samsung gs4 sprint to gsm been searching around cant find a good answer cos the phone seems to have a sim slot. also can it be flashed to cdma if the gsm potion wont work. thanks

If you're on NA7 as a few of us seem to be, you're screwed I believe unless someone comes up with a recovery we can flash through odin or kies. I would like to be wrong about that, but I haven't found otherwise.

It's the version of software we're on. Still JB 4.2.2, but the last Ota under the guise of updating Spark also included Knox which is not allowing us to root through the Saferoot method.

The stinkers! I thought I read that Sprint was coming out with an upgrade to JB4.3 for us S4 Mini users, but it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet like the WiFi calling upgrade was. Think that might alleviate the Knox-blocks problem if/when it occurs?

Why would that alleviate it? Knox is here to stay. Very doubtful any update is going to remove it. Lately it's all about locking things down.

Make sure you download latest from the site. If it gives you whelp message, you're out of luck.
If it's just not connecting try another PC, Virtual Machine or Linux Live CD.

Using latest version from the Firewater site.
It is connecting, i am getting the same thing as the OP's image. so pc is talking to phone but file just wont launch anything.
at the moment i have a bigger problem, i accidently deleted my OS while trying to get firewater working so I dont have a rom now..
trying to work that one out first.
SOLVED
For anybody having this same issue, it turns out the version of the file is incorrect.
how can this be?
Well it turns out my ISP (Optus Australia) was caching the file and it was the wrong version.
After working with the firewater dev Beaups we worked out the file had the wrong md5 checksum.
to get around this, try download it using mobile data or another network.
Once i got the same file through another link (bypassing ISP cache) it worked as expected.
Hope that helps somebody.

There isn't root for the retail version and you don't need root to flash it..
