Firewater S-OFF not working - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys! For whatever reason, whenever I try to S-OFF my HTC One M8 using Firewater, I don't get the Yes/No prompt. No idea why and have spent 2 hours trying to fix/research solutions. I'd really like S-OFF. I have a Canadian TELUS model. Yes, ADB is configured properly.

Yes I did.

Did you do the reboot part at the beginning?
Also try hard rebooting and trying from the beginning. Re-download to make sure no issues with the file.

Have done.
just tried a 3rd laptop and still no joy, must be the phone hmm

Make sure you download latest from the site. If it gives you whelp message, you're out of luck.
If it's just not connecting try another PC, Virtual Machine or Linux Live CD.

Using latest version from the Firewater site.
It is connecting, i am getting the same thing as the OP's image. so pc is talking to phone but file just wont launch anything.
at the moment i have a bigger problem, i accidently deleted my OS while trying to get firewater working so I dont have a rom now..
trying to work that one out first.

SOLVED
For anybody having this same issue, it turns out the version of the file is incorrect.
how can this be?
Well it turns out my ISP (Optus Australia) was caching the file and it was the wrong version.
After working with the firewater dev Beaups we worked out the file had the wrong md5 checksum.
to get around this, try download it using mobile data or another network.
Once i got the same file through another link (bypassing ISP cache) it worked as expected.
Hope that helps somebody.

Ya it's fine... Just go over all the step s again to make sure you did everything.
I would ask in the rumrunners s-off thread in original dev. but for me I needed to make a linux live USB and boot from there to get mine to work.
Good luck!

I had troubles getting mine to work the first time, I had to make sure I had all anti-virus and firewall programs turned off. That solved it for me. It ended up taking about 4 Pours to get the exploit to take.

Humm.. I'm no expert on it since this was my first time doing anything like it. But I would just double check everything like the simple settings you may have over looked like UBS Debugging, developer mode, or even that fast boot setting. And did you download the right files for your firmware version?

I was stuck like this for hours and couldnt figure out why. I followed all the directions.
to fix I uninstalled my anti virus and ran it again and it worked.
try to post questions in the QnA forum.
If you still have issues check out the IRC in the OP of that thread.
Turn off your firewall and antivirus and rerun rumrunner. Issue should be resolved.

[Q] Verizon HTC One upgrade path for those not on verizon

A couple of months ago I asked if there was an upgrade path to the latest update for a non rooted completely stock Verizon HTC One. The phone belongs to my mom who uses it on Ultra Mobile. Is there anyway to upgrade it to Kitkat. Right not it's on 4.2 Jellybean.

Sure there is. Manually download the otapkg.zip and copy it to the phone. Reboot into stock recovery and chose apply update from phone storage.

Well, this method used to work.
It may be that s-off is required to accomplish this now.
I can't really say for sure, as I haven't had a device that stayed s-on for more then a few days at most.
Wish I had a better answer for you.

Thanks for trying anyways. Greatly appreciated. I guess my mom will stay on 4.2.2 for the foreseeable future.
Just updating for any future users who may come across the thread. The solution to my initial issue is as follows:
For those not on Verizon you can still update by using HTC sync. After installing HTC Sync and connecting your phone, it will prompt you for an available upgrade. Follow the onscreen instructions and the phone will be updated to whatever the latest update is.

So HTC knew I went from 4.x.x.x (while unlocked and s-off with root) down to 2.x.x.x to update to the newest through the app before going s-off and they took my phone to swap out. Cracked screen replacement. Sometimes they know but don't check.

Not yet, official ruu will not be posted until T-Mobile pushes an update and no T-Mobile users have posted system image backup yet.
What you should do is produce your own system backup before modifying your device following the instructions in the twrp thread. Then you can even share that backup with the community so that others may benefit.

Interesting... What version of Chrome? SSL has been getting patched left and right and it's been stupid.
The first time I did it didn't work with the unlock.bin they gave me. After I couldn't login to the website for the longest time. Decided to clear browser cache and reboot the computer and then I could log in. The unlock worked the second time. All in all probably took me about an hour to hour and a half to get it sorted out

Augh - I ran into this problem myself. It has something to do with Microsoft Visual C++. I ended up installing every version of the redistributable packages between 2005 and 2015. Once all of them were installed, the RUU executable worked perfectly.
Alternatively, I think there is a zip file you can use to apply the RUU via the sd card method. I'm sorry I can't point you in the right direction for that, but searching around the M9 forums might be helpful.

Unfortunately, that was the method I used: install all of the requisite Microsoft Visual C++ packages boot my phone into download mode, and install the RUU executable. I used the Marshmallow RUU and then downloaded the OTA and installed that.
The sd card method is outlined in Flippy498's spreadsheet. However, I don't know where there is a zip RUU for the developer edition - that'll require some searching around on the forums or another XDA member's direction.

Okay, so theoretically you've got enough functionality to apply an RUU via the sd card method or via your computer.
The most reliable way is via your sd card, as outlined in Flippy498's spreadsheet.
Searching around, I've found the RUU zip files for the developer edition of the M9. - turns out that reading the sticky posts in the forums pays off!

I don't have any ideas there I think at this point I would apply the Nougat RUU directly via the SD card method or the executable. Either of those will be less messy than trying to figure out why the over-the-air update won't install.

I hope you're wrong on that. I haven't tried it yet. Are you using a laptop? How much RAM do you have? It is very slow to run without 8 GB or more. Takes a long time, but it shouldn't crash.

Are those firmware zips signed and US unlocked?
It doesn't crash exactly. RUU use 2008 C++ package which Windows 10 doesn't have. Once you have that installed the RUU will run properly.

I am on build 2.28.617.8, If I use the RUU.zip that you linked -2.38 will it automatically upgrade my build version ? Or do I have to find the 2.28 RUU.zip run that, then update to 2.38. Just trying to find the easiest solution. Should have made a backup lol

It doesn't crash exactly. RUU use 2008 C++ package which Windows 10 doesn't have. Once you have that installed the RUU will run properly.

I figured it was missing a library or something. Although an error prompt would be nice..

You'll be on the latest build yes. RUU are not step-by-step upgrades like OTAs. They wipe everything on the device (except external sdcard) and install the build they were made for.
Will this work for a Sprint/CDMA phone?

Some posted that they succeeded in debranding their CDMA Sprint device to a GSM US unlocked. You'd do this on your own risk though. Can't tell if it works.

I ran the ruu and my wifi calling is now spotty. My phone is about 2 feet from the wireless router right now and wifi works but wifi calling can't connect. US Unlocked.
**I actually just saw the issue is in the new Leedroid.
