Hey guys,
A friend of mine just got an Incredible and for the most part is loving it. The only problem he has is that the battery has a very short life in comparison (I'm on a nexus one and I usually get 4 or 5 hours more than him doing the same amount of activity)
I was just wondering if replacing sense with Launcher Pro or ADW or something would help out his battery life any. I'm not exactly sure how the launcher or custom skins affect battery life. I figure this would be the best place to ask.
Thanks in advance
the best thing I've found to improve battery life within the OS is to go into the sync settings and set everything in there that you don't use to either update manually or update once a day. Even though I never set it up to, it had stocks/news/weather setup to update hourly as the default.
If he uses facebook set that up to update once a day. I personally didn't need it to update every 15 minutes because you can refresh it whenever you want to check it. Wether you use sense or not it still runs in the background since so many apps are built into it.
Use autobrightness or a lower screen brightness. set the screen timeout for 15-30 seconds.
little things like that save big in battery

Sadly, no it won't help. The Sense UI program (Rosie) continues to run in the background even with Launcherpro installed. His best bet is to root and install one of the Froyo roms we have. My battery life has improved tremendously since I upgraded.

This!
Also, he probably wants to get one of the 1500mAh batteries that fits with the oe back cover. ( I got mine off ebay for $15 )
edit: here is the item: http://item.ebay.com/170500602834
With that battery and SkyRaider's 2.2 rom, I can EASILY get at least a full day out of mine.
Also, like was stated a few posts up, changing the programs that are syncing to do so less frequently will help a lot.
(Hope it's OK to cross post...) see this thread, it has a lot of tips on getting better battery life all compiled into one thread.
http://androidforums.com/tips-tricks-incredible/61755-want-incredible-battery-life-official-htc-incredible-battery-thread.html
Thanks for the help guys.
I showed him this thread this morning and he doesn't want to root yet because he read somewhere about the new update from Verizon un-rooting the phone with the OTA update. I explained that a custom rom wouldnt get the OTA but he wants to wait nonetheless
He did disable sync and purchased the new battery today though so hopefully that kicks the battery to at least 12 hours.
So there is no way to completely shut off the Sense UI at this point without completely loading a new ROM? Boo.
He needs to realize that there is no guarantee that he'll be able to root AFTER the official OTA comes out. If he plans on rooting he should do it NOW, and after the ota comes out the devs will make a rooted rom based on it.
For all we know, the ota will patch the exploit that had allowed us to get root access to begin with.
Make sure he knows that if he is rooted and running a custom rom, the ota will not be loaded, thus his phone will not be "unrooted".

What he said.
I'm running Skyraider's latest. It seems to be fairly bug free for me, it has Froyo and all of it's goodness, plus it has some goodies that probably won't be available with the VZW update.
The unrEVOked team isn't confident they can root the update. Within hours of the VZW update hitting the airwaves, the devs will have stable ROMs based on it.
On the other hand...if you don't have any real reason to root...there's not a capability you need that rooted phones have, or you don't like living on the edge of root, or you don't have an experimental side to you...rooting offers no real advantage.

Hello everybody!
My question is simple.
Should i wait for the official Froyo for my HTC Desire, or should I usw a custom Rom from this Board?
I am very disappointed with the battery-time of my normal stock 2.1 rom...
My Desire just lasts for about one day with normal usage.
Is the battery-life going to be better with the official froyo (an with roms out of the section of rom-cooking in this board) ?
Would you recommend me to wait for the official Rom, or not?
Are there some reasons against an unofficial froyo-rom?
Wich rom you would recommend at the moment?
(dont need htc-sense...)
Thanks for you help, and sorry for bad english
If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend checking out "Juice Defender" in the Marketplace. You can fine tune your APN/WIFI settings and such to get much more out of your battery. Best of all it's free. If that doesn't satisfy your battery hungry needs then I suggest you stop listening to my advice as I know squat about custom Roms. What I do know though is that battery life is reported to be greatly improved in Froyo.
Even if you wait for official froyo, the devs here will make it better and add more features make it faster etc and you'll be back here in no time you can always unroot your phone of you change your mind.
the proper answer world be depends on how you use your phone, I too would suggest using "Juice Defender" if your battery needs are not met, however note that even if you w8 for the official froyo rom you will probably not notice a major power saving effect over the existing rom. In fact I doubt that you will notice any improvement in battery life whatsoever considering you seem to be a proper power user.
Some custom roms run less services/process so you will be able to save up some battery life, its the only proper way too cut down on power consumption I would imagine the closer to the vanilla system the better.
With HTC straight out lying about the release date for the update (as usual), yesterday I took the plunge and have moved over to DeFroST after rooting.
Based on my initial impressions, battery life has improved. Rooting opens up the possibility of using the brilliant application that is setCPU to very finely tune many battery consuming aspects of the device and should make 48hrs achievable without switching off push and sync. There's a thread in the dev section about this.
I would do it. DeFroST is a brilliant ROM, but there are plenty of gems in the Dev section

I'm guessing you needed an unlock code to upgrade your radio since your on orange?
i flashed yesterday and , oh boy, what can i say - its great.
you root your phone with unrevoked, then flash a custom rom, then the new radio ( for froyo ). easy, peasy, painless. froyo kicks ass, i chose leedroid and its so speedy, an battery life has improved, altough not too much i think
@ bedeabc
When did HTC lie about the release date:???: the only official announcement I heard was 3rd quarter... there is still weeks/months to go yet. Any reply you see posted via some ones uncle who told my mother that apparently honest to god customer service said two weeks...is not 'official' lol.

So, you guys think, that its not be worth, to wait for the official froyo?
There will not be some "new" things, i will miss in the froyo, I can get in den Dev-Area?
Cause i dont like it, to change the rom every 2 month ;-)
ATM I have a rooted desire with ocuv kernel.
Untouched radio.
Is the upgread "heavy"? (dangerour, time-expensive?)
Thanks for all of your Help
I just upgraded to Froyo, Android 2.2, yesterday.
Well i think i love it. Extra functions and the speed is incredible.
When rooting & new rom - do you lose HTC Sense?

Well me personal I'm waiting, if I had a branded phone I probably wouldn't wait as it'll be X amount of weeks after HTC release until you carrier release its version with bloatware.
I am obviously one of those easily satisfied people, I think its a great phone as is with just a few tweaks here and there (voice search, keyboard etc..) which didn't even require root

depends on the new rom. If it has Sense you don't lose it Rooting doesn't concern Sense or anything else on interface
what's important for everyone who's considering to move on new froyo sense roms (2.06) - they're stable and fast, I'm using them for a week and haven't noticed one error or reboot.
You can try them out and then decide for yourself whether to return to eclair, or use them until htc releases official version. I'm certain you will choose second option

I recently ventured into flashing my evo and it was quite easy to root, and return to stock. thank you guys for all of the information posted or else i wouldnt have been able to do it..
My questions are about roms.. Which Rom is the best to use for performance and battery conservation..
So far I love HTC sense, but i'd like more battery and less lag out of it.
Rom's I have tried are:
Cynagen 6
Fresh 3.5
and another i can't remember the name but it was based off of android 2.1
All of these roms ATE my battery.. within an hour-hour and a half I was down to nothing, and It sat in my pocket the whole time, after running quadrant.
I did however notice, my phone would never go to sleep on either rom, not sure if i messed up with rooting it or not.
Any suggestions on what rom to use? I don't want to wait two years for the new sense ui and am curious about gingerbread.
The rom im looking into as of now is CM7-EX.v9, Mixed replies for problems/no problems in that thread though.
As i have said I am new to this, new to linux, etc.. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. thank you and thanks or all of the great things on this forum.
Personally I'm using a customized version of MikFroyo 4.4. I'd have to say what he's done to speed up the system is amazing. A lot of tedious work. I turn it into a "senseless" version and remove an ishload of other apps and use ADW Launcher EX. All in all, it's the best ROM I've used. Battery life is pretty decent as well.
If you like sense then try myn's rls 5
As for roms, what do you need to have and what can you do without? AOSP roms still don't have full functionality but do have really sweet custom things added in that could make up for it.
As for speed, I have compared CM6.1 to the Sense rom I am using now and the Sense one is faster/smoother. It has Mikfroyo 4.4 as the base but is even faster than that one. Battery life is OK.
However, if you are not even getting 2hrs out of your battery then something is wrong. You need to investigate or change some settings because no matter what combo you are using should get at least half a day out of it.
1) Make sure you wipe everything before you flash (I'd recommend Calkulin's format all zip)
2) Let ROMs and their respective kernels "settle into your phone." This usually takes 2-3 days.
3) Pick ROMs that don't emphasize speed/power (CM) as much and more on user experience (Myn's)
4) Check my sig if none of these help (however they should )
You may also want to check and see if you are on the newest pri 1.90 if so you can try flashing back to pri1.77 this has helped some people with the 100% wake issue. Then I would suggest another kernel possibly. Good luck.
Oh and +1 for mikfroyo!
mikfroyo seems to be the way to go... someone told me that the battery life would be junk for a few days but i wasn't sure.. i was more worried about the awake time and the up time being the same, meaning something was keeping my battery on.
I like the sense, in fact i'd love to try the new sense for the htc desire on it to see how it is.. looks amazing.
bloatware and what not i can do without
i dont have 4g in my area
i'd like to have both cameras working(i use them alot with my daughter)
mostly its a weather/texting machine.. sound like i got the wrong phone lol.. but i love the advantages of it.

i really like KINGSrom Ultra v5.0 also get the 4.3.2 the nosbc, nohavs, nouv version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763
I installed 4.3 last week which I now bitterly regret:
- memory footprint has almost doubled
- battery life has almost halved
- most applications no longer launch immediately, there is a black screen or a hang for several seconds before the apps actually launch
Is that to be expected or is there anything that can be done?
By the looks of it, Samsung may have expedited my move to another manufacturer.

Be helpful if you further identified what ROM and build number you use.
Also do u have any mods installed e.g. Note 3 app package?
Don't let available RAM discourage you, Android is meant to use what's available to offer an improved user experience.
Overall, for me the upgrade to 4.3 from 4.1 is a large improvement. Assuming you're on stock 4.3 try a custom ROM. Try them all. That will keep you busy for a while

I use stock, never rooted and updated via OTA. No mods and I did not install anything new after the update. The reason I am concerned about the memory footprint is that it correlates with the performance - it's never great, but anything beyond 1.5Gb and it almost becomes unusable.
While I appreciate the advice, I don't want to go down the route of a custom rom, it should work fine with what the manufacturer provides who does not provide a downgrade option.
I anticipated that Samsung would bungle this too, that's why I could kick myself for installing this.

Yup, I'm picking up what you're laying down...
Keep in mind Samsung released sub par 4.3 builds to many users. Their later releases were vastly improved. Check your build number. Be aware that by rooting you can install a stock Rom that is the latest revision.
I get your stance on stock but given the reality, aren't you best served to take matters into your own hands?

Well, OTA tells me that the latest update is installed so I presume that all their builds are bungled. I don't wish to void the warranty, or worse, brick the device with a custom ROM setup.
Installing and testing different roms until you find one that works is time consuming and I just want a working phone.
But you are right about taking matters into my own hands, I am going to the phone store tomorrow and check out what would suit me, Nexus perhaps or a Lumina.
As far as I am concerned, that was the first and last Samsung phone I have bought.

I would strongly suggest the HTC One or its soon to come successor. Wonderfully polished device and I would argue it's the most fluid Android phone around. It's certainly the most beautiful construction wise. Similarly I much prefer the sense ui over the ghastly samsung touchwiz ui.
Alternatively try a factory reset of your current, although this will be time consuming and, quite frankly, a pain in the ass.
Do a factory reset.

Hello all,
i just received my order of this phone. Got a good deal on it. Going to be giving it as a gift. My previous experience with android 5.0.2 was it was broken. Is it good on this phone? Its already on it, i was just hoping the memory leaks aren't an issue anymore. Otherwise im fine rooting and romming (thats possible to do with this phone via htc dev unlock right?), but if thats the case what is the best sense ROM for battery life? Thanks in advance! Any other tips or recommendations, feel free to let me know.
Have had the phone for a year and a half and let me tell you, it just rocks. Haven't had any problems with it. Can't say much about official roms because I've ran custom ones since lollipop, but I never felt the phone lagging or struggling to run an app. Battery is good enough for my usage (moderate use with a little gaming).

Great to hear! Was there something wrong the lollipop firmware that caused you to switch ROMs? If there's a chance my fiancee won't be happy with the newest stock ROM its on, then I'm perfectly happy unlocking it and flashing a custom ROM. She likes Sense though but I imagine there is no shortage of custom Sense based ROMs. Battery life woild be number 1 priority for a custom ROM though. Any tips?

No, nothing wrong, I switched to custom roms for the features and for better battery life. As a matter of fact, the best battery I had was with kitkat (over 4 hours sot vs less than 4).
I'm one of those who loves sense, so I can't say much about gpe, but I've read that it works fairly well.
Right now I'm running ICE Sense rom and it works flawlessly. Good battery, smooth and fast.
Hi folks, I purchase a LG Nexux 5X and will arrive soon and was wondering where should I start modding it.
I have done several mods in other phones and on the gear 2 neo, so I know how to use odin and some adb functions.
I usually don't tamper with a new phone unless it is really slow or annoying me with some bug, but would like to know if there are some minor tweaks I can begin to tinker with that will enhance my overall experience with this phone.
Thanks in advance

Getting my Nexus 5X tomorrow but currently use a Nexus 5. With any Nexus you want to start off with setting up the Android SDK and all the Nexus drivers on your computer so if something does go south, you are ready to fix it with the factory images. The first thing I am going to do with mine is put Android N on it since I haven't had the chance to try it yet. Then root and most likely be happy with that for a while. Since Android N will probably be officially released soon, I'm sure that's when a lot of stuff will start happening around here. Hopefully Xposed will get updated to work with it. If so, that will be my setup. Stock, rooted and Xposed. That's basically what I have been running on my Nexus 5 for a while now. But if you want to try out custom ROMs, there are those too.

Thanks for your reply. good advice to save the original rom image! I will probably root too, because I usually OC my phones hopefully that won't be so much a hassle.
If I were you, I wouldn't OC at all. Snapdragon 800 series likes to overheat and throttle itself, making it slower than usual.

I have the N5X for several months.
I previously had the N4, N5, and OnePlus One (still have it, wife uses it).
I used stock, I used to flash ROMs at least twice a week minimum (same on the other devices). Various ROMs, to test their performance, their tweaks, their perks, their battery life... you name it.
However, flashing ROMs and trying out various mods feels very much like living on the road with your backpack on, rather than staying at home and having a steady job. Because while flashing ROMs, you don't always re-install all the things you had (Even if you backup with Titanium Backup, as some things don't survive data restore very well). Last week I made the decision to go stock and stay stock (well, not really, I went stock Android N Preview 5, which will receive OTA to full Nugget in about a month).
I have to tell you... I don't quite feel any difference other than losing a feature or two. Speed is still great; snappiness is snappy, no bugs and no issues. It feels great even though its encypted (by default), while all this time I was certain being un-unecrypted made the device any snappier; that was just a placebo I guess.
So yeah, you can go ahead and flash a custom ROM (or many of them!), but don't do it for improved performance. Stock performance is truly awesome, and while some ROMs make it better, for sure - it's not THAT better, not in any noticeable way. Do it for features, do it for fun, do it for curiosity, DO IT! But just know the simple truth that Stock Android 6 and definitely 7 are so good and bug-less, that there is no need to get customized to resolve any bugs or performance issues; there are none.

Agree. I used to root and ROM the crap out of phones but with the 5X I've stayed stock. Yeah, I see more ads now and miss Viper4Android but I spend no time F-ing with the phone and all the time just using it. No gyrations to go though to install monthly security updates or trying to get banking apps to work with root (like Android pay). Try it stock for a while.

I hear you, I have prolonged the life of my smartphones more than it should, by tweaking and using customs roms. I have had only 2 other SP in the spam of 6 years and had never had to be subject to a phone/data plan. I just ride the wifis signal or pay per use the 3g signal. Even-thought this LG is not a big inversion in itself, I hope I can squeeze several years of it and the old practice of using custom roms, seems kind of pointless or not worth the trouble considering as you say the stock is as good.
