2.2 --> 2.1 Downgrade Possible? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was among of the anxious persons who updated.
Any way to flashback to 2.1?
I used some program to reflash automatically back to stock after rooting with 2.1 previously. Wonder if that will work now.

Do you still have root/recovery? if so yes.
If not, you're ****ed.
Also, wrong forum.

going back to stock?

so i seem to have borked my evo a little bit while playing with it and i want to return it to stock. im assuming that this
http://geekfor.me/evo/ruu/evo_ruu_1326511/#more-1395
should enable me to return my phone to stock and start over.
my software version 1.17.651.1
my baseband version is 1.39.00.05.31
can i just run the aforementioned ruu and start over with the simple root and flashing a rom?
Yes. That will allow to unroot and start over. This has been in quite a few threads previously. If you have any questions let ne know

thanks. i just need to make sure not to accecpt any ota's correct?
sorry for all the question. i have a feeling that a lot of the answers that i want are in the wiki. which is down. right when i need it. of course.
ok so do i want to install this
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe
or this
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6_Radio_1.39.00.05.31_release_171253_signed.zip
it seems that i want the second because it has the first ota already and the newer radio, am i correct?

either would be fine

[Q] run ota while rooted

Any consequences other than losing root? I'm not too concerned about getting it right this second since I know these devs at xda will cook somethin nice up in a few days. Just want to know my options. THanks
EDIT: im running dc 3.2.3 (2.1)
It should just flash the new ROM. Yes, you'll lose root and it probably replaces the bootloader so you can't boot into recovery either, but it should be just another stock phone after that.
So I am rooted and go to load up the update and it puts me in the spot with the android guy and the /!\ what gives...

hmmm yup I have the same root method - great I thought it would just write over...
Well we all know by now once your phone is rooted you cannot do any ota, you are much better of waiting a day or two to get the rooted version from one of the dev.

some of us dont care about loosing root, and as far as i knew i could at anytime upgrade to something sprint put out and all that would happen is i would loose root.
I'm pretty pissed...I thought that an OTA would override the unrEVOked 3 since it's not even full root. Now I gotta figure out what to do next. There is another thread here that describes a method to UNROOT. But I'm not sure if it works with UNREVOKED 3

This is my position aswell. Im sure i read pleanty of people saying unrevoked would have no effect on future updates, and the worst that would happen was loosing root.
eventually all the developers will migrate to froyo as a base so you can wait or you can unroot like me and install the OTA with no prob. When I installed the OTA it kinda installed like a regular app...did not go to bootloader or nothing like that. Then it just rebooted into froyo...did not lose anything such as installed apps or user data etc. It's all good eitherway you choose in my opinion. Keep root and wait...Unroot/OTA and wait...it will only be a short time like almost already and full froyo with root is a done deal...

Can you please list your steps for unrooting? I want to add the ota and reroot later.
Thanks,

I had the june update so i was 1.47 but either way this is the program to use...
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/19278-how-unroot-return-stock.html
This in my opinion is the way to go...make sure you use the 1.47 one and you are good to go...then get the OTA FROYO...I did it this way.
I had Unrevoked3 on mine for wifi tethering..and did the manual leaked update (update.zip on sd card etc) and it worked just peachy, if you wanted to go that route. I did lost my root but none of my data (even superusers is still installed lol)
From what I read there isnt much of a difference between the .3 and .6 versions anyway
Maybe if you did that, then waited to see what HTC comes up with for us "early adopters" to get us up to speed lol

+1. People need to understand what they're doing before jumping right in.
OP- Now you'll have to go back to the nandroid backup that you hopefully did before flashing the ROM, unroot, upgrade the radio, and then re-root. You've created some extra, unnecessary work on your own part, but it will at least get you some more familiarity with these tasks.
Directions can be found with a quick search of the forum.

You really really really REALLY have to do your reading/research before making any changes to your phone's OS. If you would've read the very FIRST post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737400, you would not have missed the big red letters that state you MUST have the new radio or you will have issues with your phone and instructions on how to install it right below.
Now I assume you have to downgrade to 2.1, un-root, install the radio, re-root and then install 2.2 ROM. Can anybody confirm?
Good luck.
Thread moved to General.

[Q] Updated radio but baseband is still the same?

Can someone help me out? I went through all the steps here to update the baseband radio to 2.0:
[GUIDE] Root, nand unlock, radio update, Froyo 2.2 update (sorry couldn't post link since i'm new)
I even watched it do the update and complete and ask me to reboot. Basically now I have a phone that's just like it came out of the box, but it's still on baseband 1.00.03.04.06. What happened? I'm afraid to try to update it again because of all of the talk of bricking it by updating the radio twice.
Does anyone have any advice for me?
It's not your fault, it's the guide's.
The problem was, the guide directed you to an incorrect PB31IMG.zip.
Try this one: http://adrynalyne.stfuthxbye.net/radio/2.15.00.07.28/PB31IMG.zip
Repeat the radio flash with this PB31IMG.zip instead.
Ugh...i just realized this is in the wrong section. Can someone move it? I didn't seem to see a delete button..

It wasn't incorrectly formatted or anything, you just didn't run the one that updates your radio. So yes, it won't brick your device. As long as you're not flashing the same radio over itself, it's fine.

you can flash the same radio over itself, just don't flash radio patches. As far as I know, no radio diffs exist for the incredible. Sprint pulled an EVO update because it bricked phones.
You could always err on the safe side, though

I officially hate that Guide. I got the radio update to go through correctly, but now it's telling me that I've lost my super user priviledges? Rom Manager is telling me I'm no longer rooted even though I've already installed unrevoked and unrevoked forever?
Any ideas?
You've lost super user privileges because you RUU'ed back to stock using the wrong PB31IMG.zip that you had before. If you're in the process of installing a ROM, the ROM you install will have su privileges already on it, so you won't need to worry about it.

So if i wanted to install SkyRaider 2.2, it would automatically give me back my root privileges during install? Do you guys recommend getting Rom manager premium to get these roms and updates? Or should I just put SkyRaider on the root of my SD card and install from there?
When it's updated, would I need to put the updated rom there next time as well? Do you have to do a full wipe everytime you update if you're not doing it through Rom manager premium?
Sorry for the 10,000 questions, but you guys have been exceptionally helpful this evening!

I don't really use ROM manager, I like having control of when I want to finish making changes and reboot my phone. Putting skyraider on your sdcard and installing from recovery is fine. And, yes, you will get back su if you install it.
And yes, you would need to put them updated ROM on there as well. Full wipe has nothing to do with whether or not you install from ROM manager, it's either recommended/required or not necessary as deemed by the ROM maker.
BUT:
Since you've RUU'ed back to stock, you probably don't have clockwork recovery image installed. You can flash this PB31IMG.zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?ux34r4zi9himdtb in the same fashion as you've done before. It will only update your recovery image, not your radio, so you don't have to worry about anything (make sure it says "recovery" when you update, and not "RADIO_V2" or something else like that).
That is my guide. I made a mistake in directing people to the wrong radio. Berserker7 caught it and I have updated the guide. I am very sorry for the problems it caused. If you are one of the people that lost root you should be able to get it back by running unrevoked3 again then just update your radio with the file I link to in my fixed guide.

So I finally got SkyRaider up and running. My question is this though. I installed the vanilla version and still have the HTC contacts app instead of the default Android app. Is there a ROM out there that has the vanilla Android contacts app? I hate the HTC one....

With the updated radio it runs great.
Camera works
Wireless works
GPS works
Bluetooth I hear works (haven't tested yet)
Camcorder works
There is one problem I have noticed but it is the only one and doesn't bother me. It does not see the internal storage of the phone. I don't need it right now so it doesn't bother me. May be different for you.

Also I see this is your first post... Just an fyi - do a little searching because just about any and every question you could think of has been answered on here. If your pops is not running the latest 4.xx software version then rooting is possible

Not unless you are rooted... then you can do whatever you like. Evo's have a locked bootloader which prevents that from happening
HTC doesn't have a sbf program, and the file it uses to manually upgrade won't let you downgrade to froyo. Unfortunately its stock or get a different phone for now.

Darn. Alright. Thanks for the help guys!
Just FYI, if you do some digging you'll find a thread where a guy said that online customer service said that folks at Sprint repair facilities can downgrade for you. This has turned out to be entirely false, so don't get your hopes up if you read that somewhere.
