How do you unroot? I'm going to be returning this phone (Sprint got me angry for certain reasons). How do I unroot so that I can return it and not have it seen as out of warranty

It's that easy? If so, thank you very much.
Just be careful which one you flash. If you flash a rom that closes the ability to root you are screwed if you ever want to go back. Back a page or two someone posted the original Ruu from sprint which has the shipping EVO rom. Thats what you need to use to go back to stock and don't accept updates if you want to preserve your future root.

For now yes, that may not always be the case. In the event some poor soul searches the forum like a good noob and sees that its not a big deal, flashes a Sprint RUU that breaks root and ends up screwed.
Well I'm returning the phone so future root's isn't a concern but thank you!
Where did you find the Stock ROM? I can't find one. All I can find is the RUU. I'm sorry if these are dumb questions but I am new to this.

Hey xda community,
my friend recently got an evo and he asked me if i can root it for him.
I have a rooted evo too but i have a different version. he got the new 0004 version of the evo while mines is the 0003. i rooted mine using that whole rageagasintthecage method, and idk if i can root his like that.
my question is what is the best way to achieve full root on the new 0004 versions.
I know google could probably answer this but i rather have someone from the community help me out.
The most popular way is via unrevoked. Unless something has changed, it should root all versions.

thanks for the replies peeps, you think this guide is good?

anyone? is it a good guide?
http://unrevoked.com/#evo
Go there, download the install
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Go there and install the hboot drivers
Lastly, install htc sync, then uninstall the program. On your phone go into settings > applications > development > check usb debugging.
After you've done that, connect your phone to your pc in charge only, then run the unrevoked reflash package. It'll take about 5 minutes and reboot about 2 times, let it run the full course.
I plan on removing unrevoked so that I can receive the latest update and then re-root. I only use wireless tethering and trying to get OpenVPN. Other than that, I don't use other root capabilities. Is this a bad idea (updating OTA)?
You can just update your rom, flash to a sense rom, update your prl and flash back. I don't recommend accepting the official OTA can you can lose your root.
I have just successfully rooted my evo4g just now. Before I can flash a rom, what are the other things I must do? (nand unlock/radio/pri/prl/etc)??
Thanks,

Well you should be nand unlocked if you used unrevoked. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 to get the radio, ect, you can use the combo flash if you like. Just make sure to backup your current rom, then flash,

Definitely do a backup, and then move the backup to your computer for safekeeping. The person before me provided the correct link for the radio upgrades.
After that, you should be set to flash. (Assuming you've picked out a ROM that suites your wants and needs.)

The main page of that website lists more options regarding rooting, backing up, flashing, etc. and I found it to be very helpful when I went through all the steps.
Just use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
works like a champ for all hardware versions & you'll be rooted in 30 minutes.

See my post on the front page. but unrevoked does give you nand unlock. The earlier versions didn't, which you had to flash the unforever zip to get the nand unlock, but its been merged into the flash.
And after you root, you hold vol+down while turning the phone on, and you go to the bootloader, select recovery. You'll be on clockworkmod recovery, then you just select backup from backup/restore menu.

That's how I rooted!
Thanks TR. I'll try that and see how it goes. I'm ultimately trying to get OpenVPN running and having problems getting the tun.ko file for my build. I don't have linux to compile my own for 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e, so I thought I'd try to update in the interim.
since im rooted and my phone has been backed up now...
is there a way to remove sprints bloatware? or would that only be through flashing?
I'm still a n00b to android flashing so i will be reading your guides...what other advantages can I expect from flashing to a new rom? (speed, battery life, etc)

You can remove the sprint apps by going into titanium backup, And depending on the rom, you will get speed, and kernels help with battery life. Generally, AOSP is faster cuz it doesn't have all the sprint crap in it.
any links to the next process after rooting/nand unlocked is done? I've read about people losing their 4g keys? how do i ensure this wont happen?
kernel/radio/rom flashing? anyone got rom recommendations?

Anyhows was really looking into on just delparting it(networkingskills) starting to take over my thoughts. Hell with it, delpart it n ,get dos boot disk made from win2000 to recreate Rom from cmd prompts?
Is there such a wipe? Mean just wipe all clean without it going back to recovery to reboot from?

Whats the good news? They dont mention the EVO4G in there, and they wont unlock it either. Its almost to its EOL, they want us to buy new phones so why unlock it?
My 2¢
if you have another sprint phone.....
Call sprint, swap esn to other phone.
Sell yours on craigslist.
Buy another one on craigslist that's rooted (call and swap esn to phone to make sure it works)
Go home, install whatever you want.

Any of you super smart devs tell me if the new update from Sprint broke the new root methods?
I applied it like an idiot, it doesn't fix hardly anything that's wrong. I've given up on Sprint. I want to head off to Cyanogenmod land, but am worried it might be broken now.
Thanks!!!

honestly, why did you do that??i just looked at androidcentral.com and the update doesnt fix anything special..anyway im sure a dev will have a rooted version soon..and just like he said, did it change the hboot?
You should always assume that an OTA update will break root (since it will not have Superuser installed) and that it may NAND Lock your phone (take away your S-OFF). If you want the update just wait around for a short time and a rooted version will appear here.
Well, try using an app that requires root permissions to see if it broke it, like titanium backup.

Hboot version is 2.16.0001
It was not clear from your OP if you had already rooted and then took the OTA or you wanted to know if you could still root your phone.
That is the same Hboot as the previous OTA so you may still be able to root with Revolution if you have not already. If you did already root your phone you need to check to see if you still have S-OFF and a recovery that you can use to get CM loaded.
Boot to recovery (hold Vol - and Power button)
What version of HBoot is it?
Cardinal Rule:
Once rooted, never bother accessing the OTA section of your Sense ROM.
Sorry, I have never rooted and am a complete rooting noob.
[my reason is that I've had blown speakers, cracked screens, etc. and have had 5 different replacements from Sprint and don't want to void my warranty unless I can get it back to make it appear as though I've never rooted]
I did find that this Hboot version still seems to be supported with the new root methods. I have one real quick question, and I have a hard time sifting through the posts, threads, forums.
I want to root, flash a new ROM and want to be able to recover my stock Sprint ROM in case I need to send my phone back for the aforementioned issues. If I follow the root procedures and install Amon_RA's backup and backup the current ROM, I should be able to flash that ROM and get back to S-ON? or would I have to go through some procedure to get back S-ON?
Again, my apologies for posting what's been posted probably 1000 times, you can just link me to a thread....I haven't been successful in my searches for a definitive answer. And the "noob guide" sticky on the forum hasn't been updated to the new root methods, so I'm not sure what will brick me and what is usable.
yes, I will never OTA update after rooting, but in case I want to get back to a stock ROM from Sprint for warranty trade in purposes.
follow up noob question to rooting, all the proper radios and account information will be imported into my phone after flashing a new ROM? Or will I have to know specific radios, PRLs or basebands after I root. It's my primary device so I can't afford to be without.
Damn. Just rooted a few days ago under the assumption Sprint has moved on as far as supporting the EVO.... Dig root but I hope this doesn't create a problem when the update is forced on me.
You can always turn off auto update, and you can also hit cancel if the auto updater pops up. You do not Have to ever update your phone if you dont want to
And if you do decide that you want the update you can wait for a rooted version to appear on XDA and flash that.

*noob alert* Those normally appear in the Development forum, correct? Is there a particular title I should be looking for?
No offense, and I really mean that, but you should not root your phone if you are that worried about the consequences. If you aren't willing to accept that Sprint may be able to tell you rooted you phone then deny you warranty repairs just stick with what you have. Once you get past that point then its time to have some rooting fun.
Seriously though, everyone is going to tell you how great root is, but I bet 60% or better never actually do anything with their phone that would have required root to being with!
But to get back to a factory state, all I'd need to do is flash a Sprint RUU and turn S-ON. I'd assume that's pretty straight forward, I was just curious if anyone here knew the best instructions that were easy to follow.

Using older root methods (pre-Gingerbread), yes. But the new root method for GB/Hboot 2.16 installs a new, non-official hboot - 6.16. No one has been able to get the s-on tool to work or downgrade to a different hboot. You can flash an RUU that will take you back to stock, but you cannot gain s-on. Whether or not Sprint cares about the s-off 6.16 hboot, I don't know. Sprint is supposed to service rooted phones as long as the firmware is stock. If it's not, they'll RUU for you. You may have problems or you may not, kind of depends on who you deal with.
The revolutionary root method is still in a beta phase, what I believe they call a "developer preview" or something. Perhaps once it's released officially there will be an easy way to gain s-on.
I think that if you are worried about rooting or don't know why you would be rooting ("it seems cool" is not a legitimate reason) then you shouldn't do it. But that's just my opinion.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
my reason is that I'm sick of Sprint/HTC's flaky software that breaks things like wireless-n, my ability to stream music/contacts with my car stereo over bluetooth, icons constantly disappearing after reboot, Sense rebooting itself, etc. I don't care about its "cool" factor, I want control - its android, right? otherwise I'd just go get an ibone.
Thank you for that update on the 6.16 Hboot change and S-off/on status, its very helpful. Any thoughts on my question of new ROMs will know how to contact the Sprint network with all my information properly, or do I have to do something fancy to that.
I don't know...last month I couldn't root 2 or 3 weeks ago root pops up for GB 2.3.3 I rooted my phone and to tell you the truth I ain't gonna lie I'm still a noob when it comes to rooting...but I think once you try it yo ass ain't never goin back lol cuz I've been on CM7 this whole time and I'm blown away I'm gonna try out vaelpak RC2 tonight when I get home there's just so much you can do...but that's jus my opinion

I have had success getting my Vs985 rooted and recovery backed up. Also I seem to have blocked OTAs pretty successfully. I am feeling confident and want to try downloading and extracting my OTA zip from verizon. I have seen the guides and haven't started following one because I'm cautious. First question: should i even do this? Is there already a latest OTA available from a developer on here for my model/VARIANT?
Secondly, What is the best way to get my OTAs back? Do i need to make it back to the unrooted 12B or whatever firmware i was on? Does the OTA download automatically when the phone boots first time on stock?
Appreciate any help, I know how to search xda so dont worry about gathering a bunch of links for me (which is not to say i would be unappreciative of that effort). You could just use xda usernames to point me to ppl's threads/methods. Thanks again!

You are using stock firmware, but are rooted? That's what I'm understanding. You haven't installed custom ROMs or anything else?
If not, from my understanding, you can just download the file via the section in your phone and do a straight-up update. This will remove root.
However, because I'm paranoid, I would do a full unroot beforehand to ensure that you cannot mess it up.
Also, OTAs download automatically over WiFi depending on when the phone checks, which for LG is often. You can go into the hidden menu of the phone and disable this.
