[Q] Which Recovery is better?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to the EVO, but I have had a hero in the past and I always used "Amon RA recovery" but now with the EVO, which is best or better to use?
1. RA-evo-v1.7.0.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
2. ClockworkMod recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702214

I don't think one is better than the other. Clockwork works with rom manager app, that is the only perk I see.

This belongs in Q&A.
Sent from my Evo.

Using RA here... havent had a single issue with it.

This should be in Q & A....
However, Clockwork has known issues properly wiping dalvik cache.
On the other hand, Clockwork will flash unsigned zips, AmonRa won't.
Take you pick, I prefer AmonRa.

What drove you to post in Development versus the section specifically designated for Question and Answers?

The issues with clockwork have been fixed for a while now. It wipes everything just fine.

+1, with rom manager and unsigned zip support, no reason to choose Amon Ra as of now.

It is still having issues for people trying to update to Froyo releases, it isn't wiping dalvik right. Maybe they have an older version of Clockwork and that's the problem.
But seriously, if someone making an update zip can't sign it, I wouldn't trust their skills anyhow. Signing a zip is simple.

I haven't been able to flash any dc or froyo tons via clockwork.

I use Clockwork, I've flashed half a dozen ROMs including CM6, no problems whatsoever. I do my flash work in recovery boot, not ROM Manager, maybe that makes a difference. Why work on a car with the engine running if you don't have to?

What is with ppl saying clockwork recovery doesn't work right?

I have been reading people saying that clockwork recovery doesn't wipe cache right and some other stuff. I am also starting to see ROM developers even mention this in their posted ROM's.
I have always used clockwork recovery with no problems. Has anyone even bothered to talk to koush about this problem the recovery has or just dissin his mod?
He seems to update it often and I find it hard to believe he hasn't or wouldn't address this.
Anyone?
I am right there with ya? I have used it and not had issues... Maybe its because I don't get crazy on flipping roms that often?
Version 2.5 fixed all past issues with clockwork mod.
Well I was using clockwork mod....latest version of course....and it didn't seem to wipe davlink cache...so last night I did the research and figured out a quick way to flash between RA and clockworkmod recoveries. It's actually really easy to flip between the two through adb. I do flip between roms from time to time and its nice to use the recovery the developer reccomends.

Help....my clockwork will not let me install the latest recovery ??? What can I do
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
What do you mean latest recovery? Clockwork is a recovery.

I switched to RA after Clockwork recovery tried to strangle me in my sleep. I reported the bug so hopefully it will be fixed in the next version.
I've hopped between Amon and Clockwork, and I like them both. Amon is a cleaner interface (in my opinion) but Clockwork allows you to flash unsigned .zip's, and makes sure that you want to do an action before you do it (i.e. no, no, no, yes, no interface, lololol).
Both are amazing pieces of software.

I use Clockwork because that's what Rom Manager uses. Haven't had a single problem with it as of yet. Very nice to be able to update CM6 nightlies without touching a computer.
Seems like Amon has more features / cleaner interface though.

ROM Manager also allows easy switching as AmonRA's recovery is there as the "Alternate Recovery" on the bottom of the app. It will gladly flash back and forth (I use RA when I am going to update something through any of the CMUpdater-based update apps (DC and Fresh both use these)).
It's important to remember too, that each of the recovery images handle nandroids differently so if you nandroid in one, you have to use that same one to restore.

not really. if you copy the nandroid file from one folder to the other folder, either one will load it.
From my experience, CWM doesn't flash ROMs as well as AR (Failed flashing the CM6 nightly twice, AR got it the first time) and also doesn't have a Wipe Dalvik option, or an as-easy way to mount the SD card.

I never had a failure of flashing a rom, on any recovery, period. That is strange, sounds more like a problem with the rom.
CWM definitely has wipe dalvik option, it's under advanced. I just used it
Again clockwork has never failed me ever! It seems to clear cache fine to me as I have never had a boot loop I couldn't get out of.
So far there apears to be ZERO evidence of an issue with clockwork recovery so I guess I need to start asking developers why they are dissing clockwork recovery or just PM Koush directly.
If there is an issue I just want it to be addressed because I love the recovery and ROM Manager.

Clockwork or Armon?

I'm curious, who uses which and why?
*Amon. Oops
I personally use cw...but many people on this forum swear by amon bc they say it is more reliable... some roms require you to use amon to flash. ...I personally have never had issues flashing with cw...
Bottom line is that we have two good choices if you are a flashaholic

Amon-ra is my preference 0 errors. Clockwork is nice also, has its own app but people have reported a couple of flashing errors. Both are awesome all I can say is try out both see which one you like better.

I was kind of tempted with the features and GUI of Clockwork, but after reading a bit on here, it seems like Amon Ra is the reliable way to go. I'm new to Evo rooting and roms, but when I had my Nexus One, AR was absolutely the way to go. Rock freakin' solid.
Currently if you have a evo with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 the only recovery u can use after rooting is amon ra...just a fyi
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Amon by far.
Amon_RA, since CWM doesn't work properly on newer hboots, and because CWM does not properly wipe partitions when you tell it to. Simple as that.

I use Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax rsa keys. That's the only advantage I saw

The solution is to place your flashable .zip files to the base sdcard directory and not within a subfolder.

Like the person above said, Amon_RA 1.8.0 can only use ZIP files which are on the root of your SD card, not in a sub-folder. Version 2.0 (which Amon_RA has suggested will be coming soon-ish) will have folder navigation.
Amon Ra currently but I have used both. The reasons are clear it backs the RSA keys, and does clear when wiping.
Btw try #grep RSA /sdcard/nandroid/HT065HL*/(name of nandroid file)/wimax.img
You'll see where your RSA keys are stored in your nandroid.
I go back and forth.... I use amon ra for nandroid backups and serious flashes like radio pri nv all that jazz. I like clockwork for ease sometimes. I don't use app2sd. I use titanium to wipe davlik and repeat in either cw or amon ra just to be sure... They both have their good points. and bad

[Q] Synergy+GodMode won't flash

I keep re-downloading the rom but every time at the end during the boot image flash I get an error. Installation aborts and I get nothing if I try to boot. Can anyone help with this?
Make sure you clear out everything good. I had an issue in the beginning and had to wipe the cache real good. No issues since
I have tried. I have done numerous cache wipes prior to install. I don't know what the deal is. Thanks for the advice though!
I guess this is probably a stupid question but, would not having an ext partition on my sd card stop the rom from flashing?

no having sd ext is fine. no problems as far as i know. but are you using Clockwork mod recovery? because the rom wont flash with clockwork you need amon-ra 2.3 there is something in the godmode scripts that is in an unsupported format for clockwork.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
here is a link to the amon-ra recovery. if you have questions about how to install it feel free to pm me. btw you don't flash recovery's in a recovery so don't try to flash it in one
I'm gonna try that. I realised that I couldn't flash Mik's rom either. I think I may have an old recovery. Thank You! I was using Amon-RA. I think it was an old version though

yeah you might have been on 1.8 instead of 2.3 and if it still doesn't flash then its probably never going to. godmode seems to be tempermental with what phones it wants to work on and theres multiple people who no matter what they tried cant get it to flash. so cross your fingers and hope for the best
I had the same problem. Couldn't flash with cwm. So I flashed amon ra 2.3 and then flashed synergy rc2 god mode it took about 20 minutes but worked.

CM7 Updates vs Amon RA

I want to stay with Amon RA, but update CM7 with the convenience of something like Rom Manager.
Anyway of updating CM7 without flashing CWM?
Flash it in amon RA? Just like any other rom

I'm new to CM7, so I assumed that updating it with Rom Manager was as simple as doing an OTA...does it actually flash a new Rom with each update?
I'm kinda over setting up my home screens on a daily basis...

Yea rom manager is just a GUI to get to recovery and honestly is pretty worthless on alot of phones, it causes more problems than its worth really. The old school manual way using amon RA or one of its variants is tried and true and always reliable. CWM on the Evo doesn't always wipe properly which leads to serious issues, I prefer to go down my wipe list and hit everything 3x on a clean install, and 1-2x for cache and dalvik for an upgrade where I dont need to wipe data etc, oh yeah just don't wipe your SDCARD option or it will be blank after and you better hope you got a backup on ur PC, I did that once when I was hungover and half asleep

I've been rooted for a little over a month, and I already got to deal with corrupt backups using CWM. Luckily, I had an Amon RA backup on a different SDCARD...needless to say it saved the day.
I haven't gone back to CWM since.

[Q] Nandroid Restores fail using Amon Ra

S-OFF
HBOOT-6.16.1002
Radio-2.15.00.11.19
Amon Ra Build: RA-supersonic-v3.06-gnm
Not sure if I'm just not doing a correct nand backup or what, just started using Amon Ra. Everytime I restore I just go into a splash screen loop. Can't find a specific thread that answers this problem. I can just reflash original rom zip, but future nand restores would be nice to rely on. Any suggestions?
You can tell from my sig what I'm running. I have not flashed over any mods of any sort, or changed any system libs or binaries, unless implementing v6 supercharger counts as that.

I never hear the end of this, so I'm about to push the f-it button and switch over.
Only thing that prevents me from doing so is my curiosity of the Synergy rom, really wanna try that baby.
Have read the best way to flash it is through Amon Ra, what do you think?
Ah, nevermind. It's saying Amon Ra is required to flash the God Mode, which I'm not about to do. The speed looks enticing, but I really just want a stable ROM that I can theme.
Does it specifically sway you can't use Smelkus to flash it? Because Smelkus is based on Amon Ra.
BTW, that ROM is pretty old, man.
