I want to stay with Amon RA, but update CM7 with the convenience of something like Rom Manager.
Anyway of updating CM7 without flashing CWM?
Flash it in amon RA? Just like any other rom

Thanks for that...lol
I'm new to CM7, so I assumed that updating it with Rom Manager was as simple as doing an OTA...does it actually flash a new Rom with each update?
I'm kinda over setting up my home screens on a daily basis...

Yea rom manager is just a GUI to get to recovery and honestly is pretty worthless on alot of phones, it causes more problems than its worth really. The old school manual way using amon RA or one of its variants is tried and true and always reliable. CWM on the Evo doesn't always wipe properly which leads to serious issues, I prefer to go down my wipe list and hit everything 3x on a clean install, and 1-2x for cache and dalvik for an upgrade where I dont need to wipe data etc, oh yeah just don't wipe your SDCARD option or it will be blank after and you better hope you got a backup on ur PC, I did that once when I was hungover and half asleep

I've been rooted for a little over a month, and I already got to deal with corrupt backups using CWM. Luckily, I had an Amon RA backup on a different SDCARD...needless to say it saved the day.
I haven't gone back to CWM since.

I have been reading people saying that clockwork recovery doesn't wipe cache right and some other stuff. I am also starting to see ROM developers even mention this in their posted ROM's.
I have always used clockwork recovery with no problems. Has anyone even bothered to talk to koush about this problem the recovery has or just dissin his mod?
He seems to update it often and I find it hard to believe he hasn't or wouldn't address this.
Anyone?
I am right there with ya? I have used it and not had issues... Maybe its because I don't get crazy on flipping roms that often?
Version 2.5 fixed all past issues with clockwork mod.
Well I was using clockwork mod....latest version of course....and it didn't seem to wipe davlink cache...so last night I did the research and figured out a quick way to flash between RA and clockworkmod recoveries. It's actually really easy to flip between the two through adb. I do flip between roms from time to time and its nice to use the recovery the developer reccomends.

I switched to RA after Clockwork recovery tried to strangle me in my sleep. I reported the bug so hopefully it will be fixed in the next version.
I've hopped between Amon and Clockwork, and I like them both. Amon is a cleaner interface (in my opinion) but Clockwork allows you to flash unsigned .zip's, and makes sure that you want to do an action before you do it (i.e. no, no, no, yes, no interface, lololol).
Both are amazing pieces of software.

ROM Manager also allows easy switching as AmonRA's recovery is there as the "Alternate Recovery" on the bottom of the app. It will gladly flash back and forth (I use RA when I am going to update something through any of the CMUpdater-based update apps (DC and Fresh both use these)).
It's important to remember too, that each of the recovery images handle nandroids differently so if you nandroid in one, you have to use that same one to restore.

not really. if you copy the nandroid file from one folder to the other folder, either one will load it.
From my experience, CWM doesn't flash ROMs as well as AR (Failed flashing the CM6 nightly twice, AR got it the first time) and also doesn't have a Wipe Dalvik option, or an as-easy way to mount the SD card.

I never had a failure of flashing a rom, on any recovery, period. That is strange, sounds more like a problem with the rom.
CWM definitely has wipe dalvik option, it's under advanced. I just used it
Again clockwork has never failed me ever! It seems to clear cache fine to me as I have never had a boot loop I couldn't get out of.
So far there apears to be ZERO evidence of an issue with clockwork recovery so I guess I need to start asking developers why they are dissing clockwork recovery or just PM Koush directly.
If there is an issue I just want it to be addressed because I love the recovery and ROM Manager.
Can Someone Customize it to be able to go through folders to flash zips instead of having to drop everything on the root of my sd card it's looks really unorganized and I always forget to put the zip on the root of my sd after wiping everything then trying to flash something. I wouldn't mind donating for that and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person that wouldn't mind donating for that being put in there.

Clockworkmod is for the noobies once first after rooting and using rom manager....unless you have RA, you wont wipe data nor dalvik or even battery stats correctly with clockwork. Clockwork needs a major overhaul. Clockwork and RA are two totally different recoveris. RA's feature is for there to not be so much clutter. so its scans /sdcard just for roms.

right clockwork has a ton of issues. i agree that it needs to be updated....or that someone needs to come along and try to combine both RA recovery style and clockworks style into one recovery....except do it right! (not halfassing it) but still......clockwork is always good for searching those folders. RA is good for wiping and stability and outrageously good for the nand backups!
First, amon recovery has its own thread and this request has been asked many times before.
Second, amon has the ability to mount the sdcard to your pc while in recovery. Honestly if you are doing any kind of flashing on your phone (besides nands) you really should be near a pc the whole time.
Last, if you read the amon thread, amon himself said that writing recoveries is a hobby and not his profession. Make your request be known in his thread and be patient although this request has been made many times like I said even by me. But when you realize how valuable the usb ms toggle option is (along with apps like astro, root explorer, etc) you will eventually get into the habit of triple checking your steps prior to flashing anything.

OK.
I need some serious help!
I have an EVO that I rooted with UNREVOKED about a month ago
This afternoon, I tried to flash to the new Synergy Rom with the cool Sense UI, BUT!! Dumb me, who was up working all night long was not reading correctly and flashed the INCREDIBLE ROM.
Yeah Yeah I know, dumb thing
I obviously got an error and then tried to restore my Nandroid backups that I had previously made.
These caused errors too..which they never had before.
I pulled the battery and then couldn't even get into clockwork mod.
I was thankfully able to flash Clockwork MOD to at least be able to get into a recovery screen.
I did so, and flashed my Myn 2.2 ROM which thankfully installed.
Tonight, I went back to try to flash the ROM that I had originally wanted to flash and the flash was complete.
HOWEVER, when I rebooted, it just kept going to the white HTC screen, hanging and then rebooting to the white HTC screen over and over.
I tried to start all over but doing a data wipe/factory restore and to wipe the Dalvik Cache..
When I did this, I got an error:
E:Can't mount/dev/block/mmcb1k0p2
File exists.
I was able to get back to my Myn 2.2 but things like Google navigator don't work,
I hope I have explained this well enough for you guys to understand.
If there is anyone out there that can help me, I would appreciate it!!!
Thanks
Mike
You did not brick your device.
Try this out and tell me it works.
Download EVO version of your preferred Rom. Place on SD card.
Search for amon ra supersonic.
Go to the xda link once you search for it.
Download the PC36IMG.zip version of amon ra.
Place on sdcard, but not in any folders.
Make sure the file name is "PC36IMG.zip", it is case sensitive.
Turn off phone.
Reboot into hboot, by holding the volume DOWN key and power button.
Let the hboot find the PC36IMG image.
When it asks whether you want to update/flash...say yes.
It will unload the recovery image into your phone.
It will ask you if you want to reboot, say no.
Then, go to where it says recovery and click to boot into recovery.
Now you should be using amon ra v2.3.3 supersonic.
Go to wipe and wipe everything, factory reset, data, ext, android secure, everything!
If you feel frisky, wipe again!
Now, proceed to flash from zip.
Choose the Rom you downloaded in step one.
That should do the trick. Also...clockwork mod nandroid backups will not work with amon ra backups, and vice versa. Keep this in mind.

No one can guarantee that you won't lose your WiMax keys with either recovery. I have never used Clockwork on my EVO, but my keys are intact with AMON RA, and it is easy to back them up with AMON RA.
Thank you so much!!!
I have company in town and not a lot of time to play...so it is SAFE to wipe everything?

Android security? What is that? And is it Safe? I am just a bit nervous...but THANK YOU for your help!
Don't wipe your SD card. Yes, wipe android secure.
Android secure is a directory used by Google apps2sd, capable on froyo and above. It is where Google stores your apps once you move them to SD card. You can wipe it.

sorry I am not rooted right now. I received a replacement phone because of a broken micro USB and it came with 2.3.3. Do you see an option for wipe system partition? or format system partition?
I also think that the mikg rom runs a script during flash that wipes the system. Kind of aamikiam's way of taking the end user mistakes out of the equation I guess...
I'm sorry if this has been covered anywhere, but I searched and couldn't find it.
Here is my dilemma: Anytime I want to flash a new ROM on my phone now (Evo4G) and do the factory reset or even flash a format/wipe my files all stay intact. It doesn't matter what ROM I flash, when it boots into the system all my old files and settings are still there. What am I missing here?
Tried wiping sdext? Flashables won't wipe that and it's where dta2sd moves (and finds) settings, files, etc. What recovery are you using?

I've been using TWRP 2.2 since it came out and have never had any problems with it. I was having problems with CWM and since I switched I have yet to have any complaints.
Give it a shot and let us know.
Is your question which one is more reliable which i think is more of a personal thing depending on your needs or loyalties where as is TWRP 2.2 reliable. Now I am not sure where and what circumstances 2.1 TWRP may have bricked a phone but since we are running 2.2 there is nothing to worry about. For as long as it has been out if there were any issues you would of heard of them by now. Try them both and you figure out which one better suits your needs
I used to use CWRM ( tried the latest touch and non-touch ) because I was familiar with it and the brick reports scared me, but I used to have a lot of issues after flashing ROMs and restoring texts, even though I did everything right.
Finally said screw it, and tried TWRP 2.2 - my issues are now mostly gone. And queuing up zips and a file manager are niice. So yea, my vote's on TWRP.
Russian smashed across the interwebz from my Galaxy SII.
The reason people were getting bricked on older versions of TWRP is due to user error. Once you wiped the system and ROM, the phone is "blank." People were then clicking the "reboot system" option without flashing a new ROM. As such, the phone couldn't boot. New version does not allow that option.
TWRP is the best in my opinion as it has several features like zip queueing (queue all of your zips at once ex: ROM, Gapps, etc...) and an onscreen keyboard for naming backups.
Only thing I don't like about TWRP is no "wipe battery stats". Other than that, TWRP is nifty but I still use darkside wipes out of habit from CWM.

I put CWM on my phone because it's what came with the CM9.1 ROM that I originally flashed.
After switching to a different rom such as Jedi Knight or JMT9, I found TWRP 2 to work wonders for what I need and the way I want info to be displayed. I found that with the touchscreen functions it's much easier to navigate recovery, though CWM has touchscreen functions now as well.
I prefer TWRP. It wipes everything completely clean, no need to flash TDJ's superwipe. It is also more reliable than CWM imo.

OP - It looks like TWRP has won in your poll, now that you have asked the question what will you do with this info?
I've tried both... never really had issues... One thing Im finding is that alot of MMS/SMS/Call Log etc. recovery tools will not work with a CWM 6 nandroid backup... Managed to get them out with Titanium Backup though, so not a problem
After switching from CWM, I've never had an issue with TWRP 2.2 so far.
But, if you decide to use CWM, I'd like to suggest: CWM 5.0.27non-touch + Darkside scripts.
TWRP is preferred
I use TWRP because of the UI and reliability. Never had an issue with it.
In some threads, OP request that you use a certain recovery whether its CWM (certain version) or TWRP so I usually keep different recoveries saved to my sd card just in case.
Plus TWRP looks better.
Go with TWRP, you will be for sure to not need those Darkside Wipes. (Reliable)
on CWM you may have to use them, depending on version (Questionable)
