Rooted ROM via update.zip? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to install the rooted 2.2 ROM via the update.zip method or do I need to use Unrevoked/NAND Unlock and then install the rooted 2.2?
Also, since I have already installed the 2.2 "official" leaked version, is it even possible to use Unrevoked now?
Sorry for the noob questions but, I am a noob at this stuff.
LD

If you already installed the semi-official 2.2, you are stuck for the moment, there is no way to root that version and to my understanding, no way to go back to an earlier rootable version.

Thank you for the quick reply. My only issue is that my 4G isn't working after the update. I did try to apply it twice to see if that would help, but it didn't. After running it the second time, the phone did seem to run smoother.
Maybe I will do a full wipe and reapply the update. I have MyBackup Pro so, maybe that with allow me to wipe and restore a little quicker.

Root 1.32 or upgrade to 1.47 then Root?

The Phone is prompting me to upgrade to 1.47...I'm holding off. Which version should I root?
I had a question / thought about that too...but I didn't get that upgrade notification, is your phone rooted already?
Root the current version THEN update using a ROOTED rom from here DO NOT DO THE OVER THE AIR UPDATE

Root 1.32. It's much, much easier to accomplish.
stang doug, this route is the best..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
It still puts ya at 2.1.. But really is solid.
This us a replacement phone....I was upgrading to a custom 2.2 from available and the phone bricked. I was lucky to get another one today. Just want to be carefully this time!

Yes. Take the 47 ota so that your wimax updates correctly.

Ok I did the update to 1.47...went smooth....I rooted from 1.47 before with no problem...one step at a time I guess...still can't believe I bricked the last one...ok so what's the best/easiest root method now with nand unlock? I fumbled my through it the first time...just want to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing this time.

Sorry for my spelling before...I was trying to install avas official 2.2 and the phone bricked while installing the radio upgrade....was doing everything step by step too......

Update: I rooted using Unrevoked 3, have clockwork mod recovery installed and just made a backup using nandroid. Am I basically ready to flash a custom ROM? Do I need to upgrade the radios first if going to 2.2?

Install the old hboot. If that doesn't make sense, get the simpleroot app and use that.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I had trouble with Simpleroot. If i stick with this hboot version, will I have problems? Also I just succsesfully installed the latest Wimax and radio updates.
Follow a post in this forum that describes full root with nand unlocking using a more manual method.

I did, but kept getting main version older while trying to update PC36IMG. Maybee I'm SOL. Should I not bother to download and flash custom roms?
I tried 3 root methods last night and I could only get unrevoked3 to work.

Just got simplerrot to work!!! So it reset my softwre to a earlier version, and flashed clockmod recovery. Question is do I need to reflash the wimax update? I allready am running the latest radio version. Don't want to brick this time!
Oh my bad. Looks like the radio and wimax reverted to earlier versions....is it ok to update thm to the current release? Still running the stock rom.
ok, dosen't look like I have root access...but I have access to nandroid?
Well I don't know if this is right but I used Simpleroot to revert the software and get the older version of HBOOT and used unrevoked to get root permission. Looks like rooted apps work, I can back and recover with nandroid, maybe some one can chime in to make sure I'm on the right track, still need to know if it's safe to upgrade the radio and wimax.
So here's where I sit:
baseband:1.36.00.04.02
Software: 1.17.651.1
PRI:1.34_.3
PRL:60662

Quick question for a noob rooter....

So I'm new to android, rooted on the most recent ota, then wanted to try cm6. I had to get the bootloader 76.
So now I'm back on the 3.26 build. I'm not rooted but can confirm s off how can I root again, just rerun un revoked?
If so how can I get back up to the most recent ota and root?
Tried installing the new ota rooted zip and that didn't work.
Any help is appreciated, thanks xda community!

This post might be of interest to you.
It worked well for me. Just make sure you flashed Unrevoked Forever (So you won't have any chance of loosing root)
Also, NANDroid backup.. just in case.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790394
Also, everything has to be stock or the update will fail.
i.e. Kernel needs to be the proper stock and all the .apks need to be there.
It seems like a lot of work, but it only takes like 5 min... the update takes the longest.

I'm rooted and they just sent out a maintenance release. Can I do it?

I've heard that you can't do an ota firmware update if you're rooted (is this true?) If so, am I still able to do maintenance releases? Sprint just sent out a new one. http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/240535#240535

If your rooted you never do a ota or yours losing root

So the general consensus is not to do a OTA update if rooted because you will lose root.
OK, what if I dont mind losing root.
I am rooted (ive used the unrEVOked 3.21: one-click root for Froyo method).
And I have never installed any custom ROMs.
(i.e. I am running on Stock. Not rooted Stock ROM! Just rooted Stock. Im not even sure if there is a difference but just wanted to say it so its clear.)
Wouldnt it be possible to be rooted , perform on OTA update (which will make me lose root), then root again (or wait however long until a new root method is discovered for the current software version)?
Please advise.

That is based on the assumption that there will be a guaranteed method to regain root user access on the device. It could take hours, days, weeks, months, or even never.
I would recommend flashing the stock 3.70 update for root users here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
Now you still have the update, but you have retained root user access.
Some feedback, in case others find it helpful.
So while rooted, I decided to accept the 3.70 OTA update. The phone downloaded, rebooted, then tried to install it. It failed.
In case others don't know, I believe it failed because a custom recovery was recognized, Clockworkmod. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Nevertheless, since I wanted the 3.7 OTA update (i.e. actually through update and not flashed) my only option was to set s-on then unroot. The procedures to set s-on and unroot from unrevoked website worked flawlessly.
Afterwards, I tried to apply the OTA, and this time it installed.
So I am now unrooted, and with 3.70 OTA. In a few days I'm going to try the new unrevoked v3.31. Hopefully it will root me.

Sorry novanosis85, i think my last post was a bit unclear.
I wanted to unroot, so I could apply the OTA update.
I guess I was trying to provide some feedback for others who may have similar questions like i did. Namely...
1. can I apply OTA when rooted? what i discovered was, "no" because the update process will discovery a custom recovery.
2. whats is required to be able to apply the OTA? s-on, and unroot procedure, then apply OTA. Update will indeed be applied but you will be unrooted.
Again, I hope this helps others.
dont dooo it! ull lose root

[Q] ROM installing problems

Whenever i try to install a new ROM on my HTC Wildfire 2.1 it blocks at the boot-up.
I erased everything and the cache memory from the ClockWork Recovery and made a back-up image.
I tried installing them from the cold-boot and with ROM Manager even though it's the same thing.
Also, by updating it to 2.2 will i lose my root?
Thanks
I am rockin a hero200 and i have gone between 1.5 to 2.2 to 2.1 then 2.3 back to 2.1 not in the same day of course.Through all that i have kept root with out having to re-root.
you should be fine depending on how you go about rooting it. as for the problem you are having im not the most qualified out there but i do know my fare share it could be a bad recovery flash or your phone didn't hold the root i had that happen once.
i would recommend going on the market and downloading Root Checker to see if your is actually rooted.
what method did you use to root.
The one where you use the android sdk. Not the unrevoked one
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
not sure if i can link so goggle Guide one click root wildfire. <-- i beleave this is an unrevoked method
i talked to a friend he had a similar issue and that worked.
it should be the first. I usually dont recommend the one click root mainly because i like to have control over what is going on but it fixed a friends phone.
like i said before use Root Checker to see if your is actually rooted.
when i first rooted my phone last year i had a recovery img but no root privileges in the the phone and i fixed it by re-rooting.
il look some more and get back to you but if you want to give this a shot i hope this helps. good luck my friend
The app says that my phone is rooted.
So, i remember now how i rooted the phone.
Installed the HBOOT drivers, then Unrevoked.
Any way of un-rooting the phone, update, re-root?
Also, will it work on 2.2?
ok so this is what i found you can try to find a wildfire stock ruu. I have never looked into un-rooting so im not the best one to ask. From what i understand it flashes a stock rom back to the phone.
you can also try looking up other methods of flashing and test them out when i started thats what i did. i mean your phone is already saying its rooted whats the harm. just read and ask questions before you try something never hurts to be safe and let the others know what your attempting and why.
Unrooting is not my problem.
I want to know why i can't install a custom rom on my phone.

n0ster are you going back to stock using odin? That was my problem and with my captivate, I used odin did the back to the American stock and I was able to load my first rom which was firefly!!!
No. Now it seems i can't update to 2.2.
So i should go back to stock, and try installing a new rom?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
I was thinking.
If i would reset the phone to its factory settings, then root it again.
Would i still be able to install the ROM?

I am trying to update to the unrooted OTA. When I flash it I get a status 7 error. I am currently on a rooted stock GB ROM. Everything works except my chase app. I run a business and I need to be able to deposit checks. How do I get the update to go through?

What steps have you taken to unroot? How are you trying to flash the OTA??
Also, keep in mind that you can't root again once you unroot, unless you keep your bootloader S off.

Also take into consideration, the app may not be compatible yet with 2.3 [its possible]
I am trying to flash the unrooted ota through recovery. My friend has an unrooted evo and it is updated and the Chase Bank App works.

Well If you unroot, be sure to leave it s-off [don't flash the s-on zip] or you won't be able to root for some time.
s is off. However, I cannot figure out how to unroot. Has the RUU come out yet for this update?
I've been away all day, but to my knowledge, no. Best you can do is check the dev section, perhaps xhausx's thread.
If you are rooted, you don't need to unroot.Like Teh Roxx says, flash the stock.rooted ROM in Xhausx's thread

Exactly.
I'm confused about how he's trying to flash an unrooted version. How would you flash an unrooted rom in recovery? I would just flash a rooted stock rom. Or better yet, try mikG or synergy betas if you want Sense. They're better than the ota update IMO.

I have tried xhaus stock deodexed rooted rom. I also tried Dr Macin's. I cannot log in to the chase app. Dr. Macin has the unrooted OTA posted as well. I tried to flash it and it errored out. Currently I have gone back to rooted 2.2 and the chase app works like it should. How can I get the chase app to work with rooted GB? Thanks!
Good question, actually, because the ONLY problem I have on my setup. MikG 1.02, is the Loot app, which I use to track my finances...
