Quick question for a noob rooter.... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm new to android, rooted on the most recent ota, then wanted to try cm6. I had to get the bootloader 76.
So now I'm back on the 3.26 build. I'm not rooted but can confirm s off how can I root again, just rerun un revoked?
If so how can I get back up to the most recent ota and root?
Tried installing the new ota rooted zip and that didn't work.
Any help is appreciated, thanks xda community!

This post might be of interest to you.
It worked well for me. Just make sure you flashed Unrevoked Forever (So you won't have any chance of loosing root)
Also, NANDroid backup.. just in case.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790394
Also, everything has to be stock or the update will fail.
i.e. Kernel needs to be the proper stock and all the .apks need to be there.
It seems like a lot of work, but it only takes like 5 min... the update takes the longest.

[Q] New to Root - help with Clockwork and general advice

Hi -
I just rooted my Incredible running the 2.2 OTA using the new Unrevoked release. It worked great! I installed the clockwork mod using the advice from this article (didn't use clockwork after all, used Root Explorer to move the apps I didn't want to folder I created)
jonamerica.com/technology/remove-bloatware-from-htc-droid-incredible-2-2/[/url]
I didn't know that I could use Root Explorer and do the same thing myself....
Is there any easy way to uninstall the Clockwork Recovery mod? I couldn't find any info online on bringing it back to stock. - My main concern is that any future OTA updates will be messed up with this installed.
I have heard stories about it bricking phones after the install???? If need be I will return the phone to stock and start over (link to how to do this anyone?)
I'm new to all this, any info/links would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I'll be honest with you..I've never heard a story of clockwork mod bricking someone's phone...Usually bricking occurs when someone does something out of order or fails to follow directions. Either way, take a look at this guide..if you want to return to stock...

Future OTA updates? haha, i dont know. 2.2 is out. HTC fufilled their commitment, i think we have a while especially if the incredible is being upgraded to magical gingerbread. Good luck!
Thanks for getting back so quickly!
I assume I would use section 6 - the PB31IMG is the 2.2 RUU correct?
Is this even possible? If you flash back to the RUU, it will wipe your ROM. Doing so will put the bloatware back on to the phone. In order for Root Explorer to have su access to remove the bloatware, you'd need to flash "SuperUser.apk". Wouldn't you need to install a custom recovery to do this? At this point, you're right back to where you started. I guess there might be a way to install SuperUser.apk through adb.
Don't take this as gospel. I'm still getting my feet wet. I might be missing something...

thanks for the reply -
I was mainly looking for a quick way to get the phone back to %100 stock just in case I have to send it back to VZW. When I worked at VZW certain RUU's wouldn't flash if the version was the same, not sure if that's changed or not. Just wondering if I ran the RUU would it return everything to stock?
Yes. Since you are s-on, the ruu would take you back to full stock.

CWM
There are at least 2 schools of thought on CWM, but this is the first place I'd read where it could brick your device.
That said, following the guidance on how to use it found here and elsewhere, CWM ~ while not pretty or particularly intuitive ~ won't brick your device, in and of itself.
I know your Qx has to do with getting it back to shelf-status, but the threads posted above should get you where you want/need to be -

You'll need to apply the s-on patch before flashing the RUU.

How do I get the OTA? - Rooted Incredible running stock sense

I am running stock sense on a rooted phone. I only rooted so I could tether and run adfree, and actually like stock sense very much. Is there a way to install the ota without ruining my phone?
I'm wondering this, too. I'm all stock, rooted with S-OFF, removed crapware. I'm running ClockworkMod 2.5.0.5 though, and I believe I've read that OTAs won't install if you're not running stock recovery. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do now.
Run the OTA
Reflash your recovery
Done. Re-rooted. OTA doesnt turn s-on.

Will the OTA install if I'm using ClockworkMod?
I'm in the same boat as thevoiceless, and I'm curious of the same thing; I don't want to brick my phone >.>
And is there a link to download the ota?
I love my skyradier 3.3.3 final Rom and I am not interested in this update how do I get It to stop bothering me every half hour to update. It's annoying.

Um... why did you post in this thread?
And to make it stop, I found this in another thread:
Code:
Get your build.prop from your /system/ folder
edit it
put this line in, not add it but replace the line that starts like this ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Replace it with this
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/264707:user/release-keys
Replace your build.prop and reboot. I did it by just using root explorer, copying it to the sdcard, editing on my PC, then copying it back to the /system/ folder then reboot. It might nag you once more upon reboot, but ignore and close it and it wont ask anymore.
Thank you. Sorry I posted it here I could not find anything relevant to my problem .

Bob.... thanks a ton. As the brits say "you're a star".. just did it and everything went nice and smooth (well...except the link to the update itself... I kept getting an error when trying to apply it. Found the update on my phone and just used that)
Just did a backup... and removed the crapware again. Thanks a ton!
Can someone link to the crapware apk's? I didn't back them up before I removed them.
Bob, you saved my life. Thank you so much!
Thanks Bob, worked perfectly for me. I copied over some of my disabled apps to the wrong folder, so I got an error the first time trying to install the update. Moved them to the right folder, and the update worked perfectly!
Thanks for the info, it helped me as well! I knew being S-Off would come in handy!
Thanks Bob, worked perfectly for me as well
Question about the "** STOCK 2.2 ONLY - READ MY LIPS SUCKA! **" statement...
Does ODEX vs DEODEX matter?
I got a question regarding the link that Bob posted. in the step 13 where you need to Copy ClockWork Recovery 2.5.0.5 (PB31IMG).zip to just plain PB31IMG.ZIP on the SD root.
When I do that and boot into HBOOT nothing is happening and when i go to recovery it just shows a red triangle and exclamation point.
am i doing something wrong or what? i am S-OFF and the update installed smoothly, i didn't have any of those apps running and i didn't remove my crap ware so i didnt' have to restore that either.
newbie question
What steps would be different if you were trying to do this on a Mac?
I rooted my Incredible using unrEVOked one click root to get wireless tether, that's all I have done. I would like the OTA, but still leery of doing this until I know what is different.
I'm reading all the posts trying to figure out what would be different. Can anyone help me.
Thanks in advance from a total newbie.
So I'm in the same boat as some. I removed (through titanium backup) all the crap-ware including FriendStream. Unfortunately, I can no longer reinstall the apps via titanium so I need to know how to get them back on the phone. When I try to run the update, I always get the error that it was aborted because of FriendStream odex blah blah blah. Help please!
UPDATE!
Problem solved. I downloaded the new RUU which includes the November update and just went from there. Yeah, it wiped the phone and I had to reinstall everything but it was worth it.

For future reference, this is what you were looking for: http://www.chadhaney.com/droidIncDefault/

I'm rooted and they just sent out a maintenance release. Can I do it?

I've heard that you can't do an ota firmware update if you're rooted (is this true?) If so, am I still able to do maintenance releases? Sprint just sent out a new one. http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/240535#240535

So the general consensus is not to do a OTA update if rooted because you will lose root.
OK, what if I dont mind losing root.
I am rooted (ive used the unrEVOked 3.21: one-click root for Froyo method).
And I have never installed any custom ROMs.
(i.e. I am running on Stock. Not rooted Stock ROM! Just rooted Stock. Im not even sure if there is a difference but just wanted to say it so its clear.)
Wouldnt it be possible to be rooted , perform on OTA update (which will make me lose root), then root again (or wait however long until a new root method is discovered for the current software version)?
Please advise.

That is based on the assumption that there will be a guaranteed method to regain root user access on the device. It could take hours, days, weeks, months, or even never.
I would recommend flashing the stock 3.70 update for root users here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
Now you still have the update, but you have retained root user access.
Some feedback, in case others find it helpful.
So while rooted, I decided to accept the 3.70 OTA update. The phone downloaded, rebooted, then tried to install it. It failed.
In case others don't know, I believe it failed because a custom recovery was recognized, Clockworkmod. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Nevertheless, since I wanted the 3.7 OTA update (i.e. actually through update and not flashed) my only option was to set s-on then unroot. The procedures to set s-on and unroot from unrevoked website worked flawlessly.
Afterwards, I tried to apply the OTA, and this time it installed.
So I am now unrooted, and with 3.70 OTA. In a few days I'm going to try the new unrevoked v3.31. Hopefully it will root me.

Sorry novanosis85, i think my last post was a bit unclear.
I wanted to unroot, so I could apply the OTA update.
I guess I was trying to provide some feedback for others who may have similar questions like i did. Namely...
1. can I apply OTA when rooted? what i discovered was, "no" because the update process will discovery a custom recovery.
2. whats is required to be able to apply the OTA? s-on, and unroot procedure, then apply OTA. Update will indeed be applied but you will be unrooted.
Again, I hope this helps others.
dont dooo it! ull lose root
Wheres the guy with the zombie thread pic when you need him? I thought another ota was out

Gingerbread update OTA update and rooted question

So my wifes phone is rooted with s off. When she receives her update will she be able to update and then I can just reinstall Su and CWM correct?
Thanks
Sent from my DINC using XDA Premium App
CWM will stop your phone from updating from the OTA.
It downloads fine, but when it tries to reboot to apply the update it looks for the stock recovery. You'll need to go back to stock recovery before you update.
Going back to stock requires that you use the RUU found here which will bring you back to stock recovery correct, but you will still retain S-OFF.
Running the RUU WILL keep S-OFF. But on dougpiston's site there is also a stock recovery you can flash in hboot if you don't want to run the RUU. I haven't used it though. So I can't really say anything about it.
That should work, S-Off/S-On settings are only changed by Unrevoked apps.
The RUU should restore your bootloader, OS, and recovery back to factory.
If that doesn't work, I use the zip files off of dougpiston.com to recover my phone.
Final question. If I apply the RUU will it wipe her phone or will she retain all her apps and such.

The RUU will wipe EVERYTHING! It takes it back to factory settings. Out of the box. Minus S-OFF anyway.
I have a ROM Manager restore point with stock froyo, but rooted. If I restore to this, will I be able to get the OTA gingerbread update?
Why do you all want to receive the ota? Just wait until a devs gets it and makes a rooted flashable zip. Updating the ota will s-off and make you unrootable. Then your gonna be stuck with the crapware Verizon tries to force down our throats. The will be nothing special with the ota except the 50 mb of wasted space for crapware. Just hold on to your shorts and let the devs do their work!

[Q] How do I update to Gingerbread? ROM Manager Causing Issues

I want to update my G2 to Gingerbread 2.3.3 but for some reason when my phone restarts for the update to take affect I see the little green android with the progress bar. It stops without reaching 100% and I get an installation error. Why wont it upgrade? Could ClockworkMod Recovery be the culprit?
I don't know for sure but I would think so. Manually push the stock recovery (find it on the forum somewhere) back via adb and try again maybe? Either that or just flash the entire pc10img and u definitely won't have a problem. You will lose all your data tho.

So if you have ClockworkMod Recovery, that means you're rooted.
What are you trying to update to 2.3.3 with? Are you taking the OTA? You can't do this (or really really shouldn't) when you're rooted.
If you're rooted, head to the dev section and pick up a pre-rooted 2.3.3 OTA release. You'll keep your root and be upgraded to 2.3.3 like you want.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211143 I used this one. Its literally just the OTA, pre-rooted. No radio, just the ROM. Flash through ClockworkMod recovery. You should backup apps with something like Titanium Backup first, because its in your best interest to wipe all data through recovery before flashing.
Thanks guys. I honestly didnt know that I wasnt suppose to update/install official updates if my phone has been rooted. The pc10img ROM xsteven77x didnt work for me but the one martonikaj suggested did.

Yep no problem. Just know that when you're rooted, you can no longer take any official update. Gotta do it on your own manually with pre-rooted ROMs.
Feel free to click "thanks" for my post glad I could help you out.
