Not able to root replacement Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had my phone exchanged at the Sprint store yesterday (7/29/30) and have tried every method on the forums with no success. I'm at a lose for what to do. I'd rather not do the official update but if I can't get root I might as well.
HBoot - 0.79.0000
Radio - 2.05.00.06.10
Firmware version - 2.1 update1
Build - 1.47.651.1 CL195459 release-keys
PRI - 1.40_003
Everything seems to be around the PC36IMG.zip both Toast, Simple Root, and unrevoked get to the same point and get this message.
Main Version is older!
Update Failed!
Do you want to reboot device?
Any idea's or suggestions?

Need to provide more information
1) Post the methods you have tried
2) The steps at which it fail

Are you sure your not putting the device in Disk Drive mode? You need to leave it in charge only when using simple root. Oh ya and a LOT more info would help.

Sorry I edited the first post to show this information as well.

My friend got his new Evo with 1.47.651.1 already installed. I used the instructions "ROOTING AFTER OTA 1.47.651.1 (Full Root)" in the first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
There might be easier ways to do it, but this worked for me. The biggest problem I had was getting downloads to complete of the files I needed, without being corrupted.

My new EVO came with 1.47 and I just used the SimpleRoot OTA Edition. Other than a few user errors it worked perfect.

Thanks, I tried that method in another post I saw but I'll try downloading these files. Going to be a while since I'm at the DMV and they are on number 21....I'm number 61. FAIL

EVO Wont update to 1.32.651.6

I never really kept track of the version numbers so I thought they were normal updates... But they started to happen suspiciously often so I decided to keep track of it this time.. Apparently my (rooted) EVO will not properly isntall 1.32.651.6 . It will just try to apply it, reboot, and then go back to 1.32.651.1 . Anyone else experiencing this?

Lol, don't be scared. It is a typical disclaimer.
Even if you do brick your phone, take it to Sprint and say the OTA bricked it.!!

Is that the full OTA 1.32.651.6 update or just the radio?

I believe Toast's root method (and therefore pretty much all of the roots/ROMS out there) already has the initial SD Card/Security OTA update applied

The link above is just the Radio image which was part of the OTA update.
Neither of Toast's PC36IMG.zip files have the OTA applied. They are pre release engineering and user debugging versions of the stock ROM which were used to unlock NAND and Root the device.
Pretty much all of the baked ROMs available for DL will already have the .6 OTA integrated. You can check and see by looking in Settings / About Phone / Software Information and look for Firmware Version 2.1-update 1 and Build Number 1.32.651.6 .....
If you want the stock ROM, rooted, Flipz released it a day or two after the OTA came out. You can find it here as well.
i believe my phone couldn't update from 2.1 to 2.2 because i used the unrevoked method of rooting. in order for me to get 2.2 i updated my phone with the pc36img.zip file and then rooted again with unrevoked.
Now when i'm trying update from 2.2 with the new 3.29.651.5 update, the phone will have the triangle with a exclamation point.
Any ideas? thanks

Power off then hold volume down and power to enter bootloader and tell us what HBOOT version you have. That is what is needed to tell you which way to root.

Follow these instructions. They are very easy and quick. Itll take you like 15 minutes and that is if your new to all this. the worst part is installing the drivers so pay close attention to that part or it'll be a PITA.
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Then flash this like a regular rom through your recovery
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever.zip
Also I would use the rom manager and install amon-ra recovery immediately after rooting and perform a backup. (amon-ra is my personal fav)
Good luck and have a GR-8 Day. any more questions just post em and I will answer if I can.
and just to confirm..... with hboot 2.02

I have not used like a boss or any other way to root 2.02. From the EVO webchat this is what you should use for 2.02

Main Version is older! Update Fail!
Instead of posting a new thread I figured I'd just add on to this one. I'm trying to root my Evo.
Hardware version 0002 (only difference from the original poster's)
Android version 2.2
Baseband version 2.15.00.09.01
Software Number 3.29.651.5
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15
Build number 3.29.651.5
HBOOT version is 0.97.0000
I was trying to use the Unrevoked method that animal posted earlier. When I hold power and volume down the evo goes to that white screen, but when it starts doing the initial checking it finishes with:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> YES
<VOL DOWN> NO
I just continued on doing the method anyway but when I ran the .exe file it said something it said something about a failed recovery image and the process was terminated. I'm sure the Main Version is older! is the real problem. Any solutions or help would be great thanks.
I want to root my phone also, Just got it a couple days ago and my Hboot shows 2.02.. HELP! What route can i take.

Did you goto www.unrevoked.com and download the files from there? There are alot of older files floating around and you get the latest ones from their website. Follow their instructions and you shouldn't run into any problems. It sounds like you have an old PC36IMG.zip file on the root of your sd card that bootloader is finding. Delete it and follow unrevoked instructions.

Use Hboot 2.02 Like A Boss method in the developers section.
Hi, I just got my EVO a few days ago and I also have HBOOT 0.97.00... I was able to successfully install the Windows 7 drivers and follow the instructions on the unrevoked3 site listed a few posts back. Everything looked ok and at one point it said "it is a huge success" or something along those lines..
But after the reboot, it went into the clockwork mod recovery I think and proceeded to try to do something an received a bunch of error messages stating "incorrect radio" or something along those lines along with a few other error messages..
I rebooted after that and tried to go into Titanium Backup and found out whatever it did, did NOT root my phone.
Is there something I needed to do to my SD card to prep before running the unrevoked method? Also, when I go into HBOOT, it checks for some PCDIAG file (hard to read b/c it flashes it very fast) and says it's not found... is this normal?
Sorry for the ignorance - I'm trying to catch up with everything here. Thanks in advance!

Ok, weird thing.. I installed MyBackup Pro and it said that my phone was rooted and would I like to use the advanced features.... so maybe it's rooted but I still can't uninstall the bloatware? Is that the NAND access that I've read about?
Ok, just ran the Unrevoked again.. it looks like I'm rooted, but for whatever reason, I can't remove the bloatware system apps. Everything runs the way it's supposed to until I boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery..
Where the error messages start is here:
Verifying system type...
E:unsupported radio version
E:Update failed. Check /sdcard/soff.log
E:Error in /data/local/unrevoked-forever.zip (Status 42)
Installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.
Any ideas??
Ok, for some reason, some apps that are requiring root work, but I still can't uninstall the system app bloatware. Then when I try to mount the \system through ADB, it says permission denied.
I tried to install Titanium Backup and it said my phone wasn't rooted.
At this point, I have no idea if I'm rooted or partially rooted or what.
This sucks...
I would seriously pay somebody to fix this for me. No joke.. I'm about to smash this GD phone against the floor.

Ok so you were right about the old PC36IMG.zip and I erased it. I downloaded all of the files from unrevoked.com and I followed the instructions from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OmPcT4pcks I updated the driver and everything was going smooth until I ran the .exe that I downloaded from the unrevoked website. I got a message saying:

Thanks for your help so far.

how about the painless flash and root did that one not work for you either?
I'm a little confused on which one you are talking about. I went to unrevoked.com, selected the Evo, and then it said Unrevoked 3 and Unrevoked Forever. I did the first option. That one gave me the failed recovery message.

What root method have you tried? With your software version you most likely have the 2.02 hboot (check by holding vol down while powering on your phone) which is unable to be rooted by the normal methods (unrevoked, simple root). There is a thread in development with step by step instructions for rooting your particular software version.

It is scary that people don't do more research before attempting to brick their device.

Try running the 3.30 RUU to restore your phone. You should always do that between attempts at rooting to make sure everything is cleaned up, otherwise you can easily end up corrupting your phone.
Once you have done that the root method in my sig should work for you.
run the 3.30 RUU and repeat this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 EXACTLY and slowly. make sure you have the right PC36IMG-ENG pushed through ADB and renamed correctly from the pc36img folder

[Q] OTA system upgrade 1.32.651.6

Long first post:
I take over an EVO phone from my brother, which was rooted by his co-worker. He told me it was rooted, and flashed with a stock Sprint ROM (the phone still has all of the Sprint apps installed, and the interface looks exactly as the phone they display at Sprint stores). The phone has Android 2.1 (I assumed), and I have a popup stating that there is a System upgrade 1.32.651.6 (13.14 MB) FOTA.
My phone info:
Hardware version 0003
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version 1.39.00.05.31
Kernel version 2.6.29-a2443432
[email protected] #1
Build number 1.32.651.1 CL171253 release-keys
Software number 1.32.651.1
Browser version WebKit 3.1
PRI version 1.34_003
PRL version 60672
When I Hboot the phone (Power + Volumn down keys), I got:
Supersonic EVT-3 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT - 0.76.2000 (PC 3610000)
MICROP - 041f
Radio 1.39.00.05.31
Mar 30 2010
My question?
1. What do I need to do to upgrade my OS to Android 2.2?
2. What do I need to do, after upgrading the OS, to upgrade my Radio?
Please don't get me wrong. I read many posts in this forum. It seems like instructions for 2.1 were outdated, and I am not sure I should use newer instruction (intended for 2.2) on my phone. I don't really know which keywords to use to search for my case, hence this new thread is created.
I read this from the sticky thread, but when I read more on the link, ppl says "ROMs posted here update anything besides the OS itself. No radio/PRI/WiMAX updates at all." How do I upgrade my phone's OS?
I am getting an Over the Air (OTA) update from Sprint. Should I accept it if I am rooted?
No. Do not accept any Sprint OTA updates. If you are not using the latest update, check in the Android Development section. You must update to the latest ROOTED update by flashing it.

Your phone is rooted with the same "grandfather" method I rooted mine, except no has bothered to update it as new OTA's have come out. You already have root and the engineering SPL on your phone. All you need to do is download the 2.2 based rom of your choice, drop it in the root of your SD card, boot into recovery, wipe everything and flash it.
Do not accept any OTA's that your phone is prompting you do to, or you can break the root and make things more complicated.
Edit: The link below has all the latest radio, PRI, NV and Wimax software. You can flash these now, but note that there will be more added to this list as some or all of these are changing with the latest OTA update that is being pushed out by Sprint right now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
step 1: download a deoxdexed version in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
step 2: flash that file to your phone by using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831559
and then you are done
if you are rooted, NEVER accept OTA updates from sprint.
Thank you rugedraw for your help.
From your link, I did not see the OP stated anything about ROMs, kernels,... Can I assume that Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV updates work for any versions of ROMs, kernels?
Thank you weaselp1. I bookmarked the links you posted.

[Q] How To Root

Hey guys
I am totally new to the android phones, and now having a DHD which has the following specs:
Android Ver. 2.2
BaseBand Ver. 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_m
Kernel Ver. 2.6.32.21-gf3f553d
Build No. 1.32.405.6
Software No. 1.32.405.6
Now i looked at this link -
and didn't understand if i have to downgrade my DHD as well or is my version old enough so i can skip right ahead to the S-Off and ROOT?
can anyone tell me from what ver., and Ver. of what, do you have to perform downgrading?
thanks.
No need to downgrade.
Use this one:

how to root gingerbread
hi everybody,
forgive me if I' writing in the wrong place but for me has been enough difficult to get here..
I'm a rookie android user and I've been flying over the forums for the last three days, I'm really getting crazy.
Here are the specifics of my phone (branded):
android version 2.3.3
kernel version 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
software number 2.50.405.2
and here's the problem:
I have purchased an AR drone and I'm trying to get it connected so I visited the following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072281
seems that the first thing i need is a ROOTED Desire HD . I have tried every thing. Visionary (in different releases installed with ASTRO) seems not to be working. When i select Temproot now, after a while, the screen turns black. I waited for several minutes but nothing happened. So I needed to exit the program selecting "home". At that point it didn't allow me to rerun the app, I needed to reboot the phone to get it working again but no success.
So I tried GINGERBREAK 1.2 but after 25 minutes the rebooting process was still going on and I guessed that something was not working properly (as usual), so I stopped it. I think there is also a problem with Superuser (v 2.3.6.3), infact when I try to update it, it says "an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary" (by the way...sorry for my inexperience, but what does "flash something" mean????).Anyway, my phone doesn't reboot on clockwork recovery.
Moreover, upon opening Rom manager (v4.3.2.4) it tells me that I must root my phone to get it working (of course) and that it cannot find Superuser at "system/bin/su" or "system/xbin/su". Guess what! I don't have such files on my phone.....
At this time i don't know what else I can do, I'm relly frustrated.
Can anyone help me out? keep in mind that if you have any kind of solution, I need some very "plain" explanation like if you were talking to your 5 years old son, please
Thanks
If we update with software number 2.50.405.2 can we root?
No, firmware > 2.37 cannot be rooted.
Thanks for the info, I guess I have to get rid of my AR Drone
