Power off then hold volume down and power to enter bootloader and tell us what HBOOT version you have. That is what is needed to tell you which way to root.

Follow these instructions. They are very easy and quick. Itll take you like 15 minutes and that is if your new to all this. the worst part is installing the drivers so pay close attention to that part or it'll be a PITA.
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Then flash this like a regular rom through your recovery
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever.zip
Also I would use the rom manager and install amon-ra recovery immediately after rooting and perform a backup. (amon-ra is my personal fav)
Good luck and have a GR-8 Day. any more questions just post em and I will answer if I can.
and just to confirm..... with hboot 2.02

I have not used like a boss or any other way to root 2.02. From the EVO webchat this is what you should use for 2.02

Main Version is older! Update Fail!
Instead of posting a new thread I figured I'd just add on to this one. I'm trying to root my Evo.
Hardware version 0002 (only difference from the original poster's)
Android version 2.2
Baseband version 2.15.00.09.01
Software Number 3.29.651.5
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15
Build number 3.29.651.5
HBOOT version is 0.97.0000
I was trying to use the Unrevoked method that animal posted earlier. When I hold power and volume down the evo goes to that white screen, but when it starts doing the initial checking it finishes with:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> YES
<VOL DOWN> NO
I just continued on doing the method anyway but when I ran the .exe file it said something it said something about a failed recovery image and the process was terminated. I'm sure the Main Version is older! is the real problem. Any solutions or help would be great thanks.
I want to root my phone also, Just got it a couple days ago and my Hboot shows 2.02.. HELP! What route can i take.

Did you goto www.unrevoked.com and download the files from there? There are alot of older files floating around and you get the latest ones from their website. Follow their instructions and you shouldn't run into any problems. It sounds like you have an old PC36IMG.zip file on the root of your sd card that bootloader is finding. Delete it and follow unrevoked instructions.

Use Hboot 2.02 Like A Boss method in the developers section.
Hi, I just got my EVO a few days ago and I also have HBOOT 0.97.00... I was able to successfully install the Windows 7 drivers and follow the instructions on the unrevoked3 site listed a few posts back. Everything looked ok and at one point it said "it is a huge success" or something along those lines..
But after the reboot, it went into the clockwork mod recovery I think and proceeded to try to do something an received a bunch of error messages stating "incorrect radio" or something along those lines along with a few other error messages..
I rebooted after that and tried to go into Titanium Backup and found out whatever it did, did NOT root my phone.
Is there something I needed to do to my SD card to prep before running the unrevoked method? Also, when I go into HBOOT, it checks for some PCDIAG file (hard to read b/c it flashes it very fast) and says it's not found... is this normal?
Sorry for the ignorance - I'm trying to catch up with everything here. Thanks in advance!

Ok, weird thing.. I installed MyBackup Pro and it said that my phone was rooted and would I like to use the advanced features.... so maybe it's rooted but I still can't uninstall the bloatware? Is that the NAND access that I've read about?
Ok, just ran the Unrevoked again.. it looks like I'm rooted, but for whatever reason, I can't remove the bloatware system apps. Everything runs the way it's supposed to until I boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery..
Where the error messages start is here:
Verifying system type...
E:unsupported radio version
E:Update failed. Check /sdcard/soff.log
E:Error in /data/local/unrevoked-forever.zip (Status 42)
Installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.
Any ideas??
Ok, for some reason, some apps that are requiring root work, but I still can't uninstall the system app bloatware. Then when I try to mount the \system through ADB, it says permission denied.
I tried to install Titanium Backup and it said my phone wasn't rooted.
At this point, I have no idea if I'm rooted or partially rooted or what.
This sucks...
I would seriously pay somebody to fix this for me. No joke.. I'm about to smash this GD phone against the floor.

Ok so you were right about the old PC36IMG.zip and I erased it. I downloaded all of the files from unrevoked.com and I followed the instructions from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OmPcT4pcks I updated the driver and everything was going smooth until I ran the .exe that I downloaded from the unrevoked website. I got a message saying:

how about the painless flash and root did that one not work for you either?
I'm a little confused on which one you are talking about. I went to unrevoked.com, selected the Evo, and then it said Unrevoked 3 and Unrevoked Forever. I did the first option. That one gave me the failed recovery message.

I had my phone exchanged at the Sprint store yesterday (7/29/30) and have tried every method on the forums with no success. I'm at a lose for what to do. I'd rather not do the official update but if I can't get root I might as well.
HBoot - 0.79.0000

Firmware version - 2.1 update1
Build - 1.47.651.1 CL195459 release-keys
PRI - 1.40_003
Everything seems to be around the PC36IMG.zip both Toast, Simple Root, and unrevoked get to the same point and get this message.
Main Version is older!
Update Failed!
Do you want to reboot device?
Any idea's or suggestions?
Need to provide more information
1) Post the methods you have tried
2) The steps at which it fail
Are you sure your not putting the device in Disk Drive mode? You need to leave it in charge only when using simple root. Oh ya and a LOT more info would help.
Sorry I edited the first post to show this information as well.

My friend got his new Evo with 1.47.651.1 already installed. I used the instructions "ROOTING AFTER OTA 1.47.651.1 (Full Root)" in the first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
There might be easier ways to do it, but this worked for me. The biggest problem I had was getting downloads to complete of the files I needed, without being corrupted.
My new EVO came with 1.47 and I just used the SimpleRoot OTA Edition. Other than a few user errors it worked perfect.
Thanks, I tried that method in another post I saw but I'll try downloading these files. Going to be a while since I'm at the DMV and they are on number 21....I'm number 61. FAIL

It came stock with the Froyo Sprint 3.30.651.2
I was told by a friend that its hard to root the 3.30 builds, and I couldn't find reference to that on here.
Just want to make sure T_T
it is HARD to root 3.30 build. what is your hardware? i am willing to help you command by command (because i am nice?) do you have adb installed? pc or mac? first step is install adb. then i can help you more.
uhm, did i forget to say i am very noob at this T_T what is adb?
and in terms of hardware,. did you mean..
Hardware version 0003?
I was in the same boat as you last week. I had WM for years and was familiar with unlocking and flashing things, had to learn quite a bit of new stuff moving to android. These two threads helped me immensely.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828437
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
I am not sure how well the first one works, but would be easier. Personally I used the 2nd link and followed the manual method, not only to make sure every step was correct, but it also taught me quite a bit about android.
Let me, the other gentleman in this post, or someone in one of those posts if you need an assistance.
wow both those tutorials root while turning s-off?!?!? i guess i haven't been reading up on those enough. i thought that they were to turn s-off once shell permissions were gained. if you want to do it manually, you still can, but the first link seems the best since it somehow magically downgrades you to .76.2 hboot. i'm not sure if anybody else has been able to do this in hboot 2.02. or maybe i'm wrong. maybe you just have to flash a pc36img.zip after s-off.
answering your question: adb is the driver that allows for your phone and your computer to talk. it was developed by google to help app developers, so it is perfectly safe and legal. it is used for just about every manual hack/mod on these forums. really, it is the most useful tool you can have. once again, pc or mac?

Yea I had read up all on rooting, flashing, etc before getting my Evo last week only to have to search more when none of the other methods worked. Fortunately those posts got me everything I needed.
Maybe you guys can shed some light for me on this issue. I attempted to root my phone using the tutrial on this site named How to root evo 2.2. Everything went well got into bootloader and when it was time to load the image files from the pc36img.zip it would never load the files. My guess is because the hboot file in the zip is hboot 0.93.0000 and i have hboot 0.97.0000. All the info i see about rooting is relating to hboot 2.0.2 which is not the hboot on my evo. Any ideas? The hboot 2.0.2 like we have is the one that is more difficult to root. I have mine rooted, but I did not downgrade it like some have tried or possibly have done. If you have an older hboot and are on the 3.29 stock rom you shouldn't have too much problem following the basic guides, or even many of the 1-click root options. I personally don't know which to recommend because none of them worked for me, I would read through the android development subforum and see what has worked for others though.
hah ya you need to redo the mtd-eng.img step. that is why it wasn't accepted. i sort of went off on my own boat last night and rooted 3.29 flawlessly by running 4 pc36img.zips (from 3.29 to 1.47 to 1.32 to rooted 1.32 to eng spl 1.32) and 3 different exploits (mtd-eng exploit, flash lite exploit, no security exploit, and simple mtd-eng exploit). it really worked well, but took hours of downloading. thats like over half a gig of files. if you have questios about my method just ask.
where does it say what hboot you have?
boot into bootloader (turn phone off. once fully down, hold power and volume down) should say hboot-(version) or something like that.
I, too am confused as to what method to use or if I have to wait.
My hboot version is 0.97.0000
Hardware is 004
Software 3.29.651.5
PRI 1.77_003
Has anyone applied the unrevoked3 method for this config? Also, if 3.30x is a new release, it's weird why my "System Update" does not find any new OTA updates.
That is the weirdest verson combo I have ever seen. really no idea.
So I'm trying to root my evo using the Unrevoked method...
Hardware version 0002
Android version 2.2
Baseband version 2.15.00.09.01
Software Number 3.29.651.5
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15
Build number 3.29.651.5
HBOOT version is 0.97.0000
I was trying to use the Unrevoked method that animal posted earlier. When I hold power and volume down the evo goes to that white screen, but when it starts doing the initial checking it finishes with:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> YES
<VOL DOWN> NO
I just continued on doing the unrevoked method anyway but when I ran the .exe file it said something it said something about a failed recovery image and the process was terminated. I'm sure the Main Version is older! is the real problem.
I've been doing a lot of searching on this and I noticed that I have S-on and maybe I need to do something to get that turned off. All of the S-off guides are for evos with HBOOT 2.02 and mine doesn't have that.

You install for the drivers then uninstall cause it interferes with the root process.

What root method have you tried? With your software version you most likely have the 2.02 hboot (check by holding vol down while powering on your phone) which is unable to be rooted by the normal methods (unrevoked, simple root). There is a thread in development with step by step instructions for rooting your particular software version.

Try running the 3.30 RUU to restore your phone. You should always do that between attempts at rooting to make sure everything is cleaned up, otherwise you can easily end up corrupting your phone.
Once you have done that the root method in my sig should work for you.
run the 3.30 RUU and repeat this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 EXACTLY and slowly. make sure you have the right PC36IMG-ENG pushed through ADB and renamed correctly from the pc36img folder
