Long first post:
I take over an EVO phone from my brother, which was rooted by his co-worker. He told me it was rooted, and flashed with a stock Sprint ROM (the phone still has all of the Sprint apps installed, and the interface looks exactly as the phone they display at Sprint stores). The phone has Android 2.1 (I assumed), and I have a popup stating that there is a System upgrade 1.32.651.6 (13.14 MB) FOTA.
My phone info:
Hardware version 0003
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version 1.39.00.05.31
Kernel version 2.6.29-a2443432
[email protected] #1
Build number 1.32.651.1 CL171253 release-keys
Software number 1.32.651.1
Browser version WebKit 3.1
PRI version 1.34_003
PRL version 60672
When I Hboot the phone (Power + Volumn down keys), I got:
Supersonic EVT-3 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT - 0.76.2000 (PC 3610000)
MICROP - 041f
Radio 1.39.00.05.31
Mar 30 2010
My question?
1. What do I need to do to upgrade my OS to Android 2.2?
2. What do I need to do, after upgrading the OS, to upgrade my Radio?
Please don't get me wrong. I read many posts in this forum. It seems like instructions for 2.1 were outdated, and I am not sure I should use newer instruction (intended for 2.2) on my phone. I don't really know which keywords to use to search for my case, hence this new thread is created.
I read this from the sticky thread, but when I read more on the link, ppl says "ROMs posted here update anything besides the OS itself. No radio/PRI/WiMAX updates at all." How do I upgrade my phone's OS?
I am getting an Over the Air (OTA) update from Sprint. Should I accept it if I am rooted?
No. Do not accept any Sprint OTA updates. If you are not using the latest update, check in the Android Development section. You must update to the latest ROOTED update by flashing it.

Your phone is rooted with the same "grandfather" method I rooted mine, except no has bothered to update it as new OTA's have come out. You already have root and the engineering SPL on your phone. All you need to do is download the 2.2 based rom of your choice, drop it in the root of your SD card, boot into recovery, wipe everything and flash it.
Do not accept any OTA's that your phone is prompting you do to, or you can break the root and make things more complicated.
Edit: The link below has all the latest radio, PRI, NV and Wimax software. You can flash these now, but note that there will be more added to this list as some or all of these are changing with the latest OTA update that is being pushed out by Sprint right now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
step 1: download a deoxdexed version in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
step 2: flash that file to your phone by using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831559
and then you are done
if you are rooted, NEVER accept OTA updates from sprint.
Thank you rugedraw for your help.
From your link, I did not see the OP stated anything about ROMs, kernels,... Can I assume that Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV updates work for any versions of ROMs, kernels?
Thank you weaselp1. I bookmarked the links you posted.

So I read the Stickies, I read the idiot proof - im simply overwhelmed.
I guess I need another breakdown and to make sure everything on those guide is updated, link working, etc...
Question #1: I don't know what Version I am on, can I root?
Question #2: I don't know what Radio update im on, can I root?
Question #2b: Do I update Radio Before Root?
Question #2c: Link to the latest Radio and how to update Radio if unrooted?
Question #3: Anything else I need before going to the Idiot Proof Guide?
Question #4: On the Idiot Guide - it states I can skip if im not bacing up any Apps.
Is there any particular apps worth backing up? Or does he simply means, any apps I have downloaded from the market - to back them up if needed??
Anything else I should know?
thank you
1: To check the version go to settings/about phone/software information. All versions are currently rootable but depending on the version you may have to take different steps.
2: You can check your radio in the same menu as #1. Yes you can root and then flash latest radio after.
2b: Root first then flash latest radio.
2c: Once rooted go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
if you follow those instructions you will be rooted on stock rom with latest radios. Thats a good starting point and from there you can go ahead and flash any other roms.
3:Read more this never hurts
4: If your referring to the idiot guide done by the Biles note that it only works for those rooting pre 1.47. If your on 1.47 I would suggest you root using simple root app. That can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565
lastly check out this read, I think it is the most comprehensive root guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
the above thread has video and explains differences with rooting different versions.

Hold on there - I don't think all versions are currently rootable. I think it would have been big news if they found root for 2.2. - I don't think I would have missed that

don't worry about pri and prl. A lot of folk think its a big deal, but I don't think it really matters.
Use the 1 click simpleroot method - it's the easiest, then follow the instructions given above by 87Octane

well I am the OP so im allowed to ressurect my thread since I was unable to follow up after 87octane post, that and im pulling my newbie card
I had my phone exchanged at the Sprint store yesterday (7/29/30) and have tried every method on the forums with no success. I'm at a lose for what to do. I'd rather not do the official update but if I can't get root I might as well.
HBoot - 0.79.0000
Radio - 2.05.00.06.10
Firmware version - 2.1 update1
Build - 1.47.651.1 CL195459 release-keys
PRI - 1.40_003
Everything seems to be around the PC36IMG.zip both Toast, Simple Root, and unrevoked get to the same point and get this message.
Main Version is older!
Update Failed!
Do you want to reboot device?
Any idea's or suggestions?
Need to provide more information
1) Post the methods you have tried
2) The steps at which it fail
Are you sure your not putting the device in Disk Drive mode? You need to leave it in charge only when using simple root. Oh ya and a LOT more info would help.
Sorry I edited the first post to show this information as well.

My friend got his new Evo with 1.47.651.1 already installed. I used the instructions "ROOTING AFTER OTA 1.47.651.1 (Full Root)" in the first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
There might be easier ways to do it, but this worked for me. The biggest problem I had was getting downloads to complete of the files I needed, without being corrupted.
My new EVO came with 1.47 and I just used the SimpleRoot OTA Edition. Other than a few user errors it worked perfect.
Thanks, I tried that method in another post I saw but I'll try downloading these files. Going to be a while since I'm at the DMV and they are on number 21....I'm number 61. FAIL

Is you phone rooted and S-OFF? If not, just go to the link I gave you and follow condition 5. Skip step 2 (you will not need this). Skip step 6. That should get you the following files in your c:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder:
PB31IMG.zip (this is the 2.1 ROM)
rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (this is a root exploit - gives you temperary root)
mtd0.img (need to research this one)
flash_image (this flashes images)
Skip step 9. When you complete the remaining steps, you should be back to stock 2.1.
Hello Supersonic Community,
I come to you in my time of need, I have spend the last 3 days at work trying to downgrade an Evo 4g to 2.1. from 2.2.
Initially I ran unrEVOked3 reflash package as from what I read it would probably be the easiest place to start from an unrooted 2.2.
Once I was rooted on 2.2 I followed the guide from here
and used the RUU/Zip files from here
I currently have the phone in a state where it will only load into the bootloader and I do have a working amon ra recovery.
When I try flashing the RUU's PC36img.zip file from hboot I see that it "checks" the zip file however I am not prompted to run the update.
and when trying to run the RUU zip file from recover it says there is not update script.
My main question is if anyone knows why I am not prompted for the update from Hboot or if its possible to flash from recovery back to stock 2.1
I come from a Nexus S and HTC Desire background and have a bit of knowledge just kinda stumped right now on this one. I am currently trying different SD cards for the hboot flash as I have read that it can be a bit finicky.
Thanks in advance for any help.
PHone info
Android version 2.2

PRI version 1.77_003
PRL version 60675
Hardware version 0003
h-boot 0.79.00
It all goes back to the Hboot version you have. I think it's anything over 2.10 you can't downgrade.
I think your best bet is to just flash a stock/Rooted 2.1 ROM or a custom Froyo ROM
Well my HBoot is .79 so I hopefully can recover to 2.1.
I basically can't have a rooted phone, I work in mobile QA and we can't test on devices that are rooted. Which I know is a bit retarded but thats how it works for us right now.
If I flash a stock 2.1 rooted Rom I should be able to unroot.... at the very least uninstalled su and my boss won't know hehe
Thanks for your reply.
Did your phone come with that hboot? If your hboot and radio match the ruu you are trying to flash, then it should be good to go. If you r s-off while trying, even better. Do you have 20k or 40k block sizes?

**********HBOOT VERSION IS .79 *************** TYPO IN OP
That would be the Hboot it came with these are testing devices at my work. they are ALL STOCK unless i personally change it as no one else here handles the android phones.
I am unsure of the 20/40 k block sizes you are referring too do you mean on my sd card?
So i have successfully flash a rooted 2.1 stock rom and am trying to uninstall super user. If anyone has any tips on this let me know
Issue resolved.
Set phone into recovery and used ADB to remove the Superuser apk
Thanks for the help
I downloaded the Froyo Stock Rom for the Inc 2, renamed it PG32IMG.zip and put it in the root of my SD Card.
I rebooted the phone, holding the power and volume down buttons.
The phone sees the file and starts the process.
After a minute, I get the message "Main Version is older! Update Fail! Press <POWER> to reboot.
I am already on HBOOT-0.97.0000
The phone is not rooted and currently running Android 2.3.3, Software # 2.18.605.3
As crazy as it sounds, ultimately I'm trying to get to the latest stock version from Verizon but software update isn't seeing any OTA updates.
Which leads me to 2 questions:
1) Am I doing something wrong?
2) Can I get the latest Verizon version 5.10.605.9
Many thanks in advance........
Froyo isn't the latest version for this device. Gingerbread is
Gingerbread 2.3.4 Firmware (Comes with hboot .98 latest version): http://jellybellys.minus.com/mvivow#1

You can flash this even with S-ON.
You get the main version error because the .zip you are trying to flash is currently older than what you have currently. This one poasted, will give you HBoot .98 too
Information came from here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18873-ruu-htc-incredible-2-signed-ruus-pg32imgzip-sticky/
Thanks!....
Any insight why the phone wouldn't see any of the OTA Updates? All I got was the phone was up to date
HTC Tech Support had me dial #*#*CHECKIN#*#* (may have gotten the *'s and #'s backwards in this post).
The Checkin was successful but the phone still didn't see any updates.
Strange?
Thanks again!!!
mine did the same thing. would not receive the update. the method above worked for me. thanks
Link is broke no dl there
