What happens if you get the Froyo 2.2 update?

If one of us happens to get the update, and want to keep root....what do you want us to do with the update?

Don't install it. I'm not sure how to do that with an Android device.
However if it does get installed you will lose root. It could also cause some problems if it gets pushed to your phone.
The devs will have a rooted version of the rom before they will have a root method for the rom.

I think it is safe to say, if you want to keep Root, ignore the update prompt, and wait for the developers here to make rooted versions of the ROM.
The original firmware was rooted before the phone came out. (I don't know how long it took developers to actually Root the phone, since I don't know how long they had the developers release in their hands).
When the 1.47 OTA came out, it broke root, and became a mad scramble to try to re-root the phone. If I remember right, it took a couple weeks to find the workaround that would allow root.
It is a good bet that the new release WILL break root again, and there is no telling how long it will be before it can be rooted again, if ever.

is this a serious question? most updates will remove all hacked/homebrew stuff been hapning since the begining of time.......(i.e. PSP, Nintendo Wii, iPhone/touch......)just dont update...take this stuff to yahoo answers.

Update lose root. Period. Just wait.

ohh geez, be prepared for all of the topics like "just updated to sprints official froyo update and lost root can i root it back?" my gawd its gonna get annoying

i guess this is a noob question, but how long does it take to get a rooted stock rome of this 2.2? i would assume not too long correct?

usually same day.. its all about patience which there is little of.. i can guarantee you will have a stock rooted rom by this weeks end

Is it possible that someone here starting to working on rooting EVO after Froyo OTA?

I've been using my EVO for a while, and I did OTA to Froyo last night. I would like to try root it after a while, just want to know if there were anyone starting to work on the way for the EVO after Froyo upgrade?
Or, for non-rooted evo, can i do downgrade to old version official ROM, then root it?

Not possible yet...if you were previously rooted and updated to OTA im sure you knew what you were doing and the consiquences because its all over the forums...for now you're just going to have to wait it out....no word on root-able 2.2 yet.

I know unrevoked is working on a root but unless it has full nand unlock I wouldn't use it.

Well will be happy when someone does I want a stock rooted 2.2. Now im also wondering if there is a new way we have to root. Seems like everytime we get an update they have to come up with a new way to root. I have looked and read almost everything. Was wondering if someone can help a little. Sorry for hi-jacking OP.

almost every update they will fix the current way we root. there already is and has been a stock 2.2 rooted in development forums. Before you can use it you have to be rooted however and if you are already on stock 2.2 that could be a while for them to find a way to exploit a bug to let you root again.

OK was making sure that rooted stock was good. Also i thought there wasnt a way to root yet from a 2.2, just making sure. Thanks!

You are right.. If you have 2.2 unrooted on your phone you cannot root it at this time. However if you have a 2.1 rooted phone you can flash a 2.2 Rooted ROM. Rooting a ROM pre-installed is different than rooting a ROM that is already installed on your phone.

nah, i didn't root my phone on 2.1. and i do know if i rooted, I should avoid official OTA when it cames, cuz it's highly possible to brick your phone, and at least, you will ruined your root for sure.
I guess i have to wait for a while to see someone publish confirmed way to do that.

You cannot downgrade. The upgrade to 2.2 updates your HBOOT. None of the RUU's will accept this updated HBOOT, causing the installation to error out.

My Evo is still at 1.47 after foolishly taking the OTA update, and I haven't yet re-rooted it after the exploit was discovered. I want to upgrade to 2.2, but I am hesitant to do so after all the warnings from last time about taking OTA updates.
I really am not interested in a custom ROMs all that much, as I prefer stability and I want my 4G to work correctly.
With that said, I do want to keep my future options open. So, with that in mind, how should I first proceed?
I don't care about losing my apps and data, etc. I will reload.
- Should I follow the tutorials to first fully unlock the NAND?
- If so, can I then apply the official 2.2 update over the air?
- If I do that, and I have unlocked the NAND, can I revert to rock stock later?
- Is there a way (kitchen?) to keep the stock ROM and just remove some apps?
Thanks for the guidance, just want to proceed cautiously.

DO NOT UPGRADE/UPDATE, do a full root then flash any of the Froyo/2.2 ROM's already rooted

most of the release roms have 4g working as well as are very stable. I bet if you tried any of the custom roms you would be suprised. I have very few issues with the custom roms i have used (mainly fresh and dc). As i need my phone everyday for work and am a very heavy user because of it i can tell you hat you will probably be fine with any of the big custom roms (cm6 excluded if you need 4g)
Now on to the question if you root and then take the OTA you are basically jsut wasting time as it will unroot your phone. Your best bet is to root the phone and then if you dont want a custom rom find the stock rooted 2.2 rom in the dev section and flash that. it is the stock room except it doesnt override your root. nothing else is done to it.
This would allow you to have froyo on as close to the ota as possible while not killing your ability to root or taking away your root.

This. I'm lost along with all of the other users who applied the OTA to 2.2 (I have the leaked version). Once I get root again I will never unroot, ever. Flash this ROM (Post ID: 740520, can't post links yet), it's the rooted OTA ROM for 2.2. Keep your NAND, keep your root... having official software means you're stuck with terrible "official" support from HTC and Sprint.

[Q] Temproot via Visionary+ on 2.3.3 (the new OTA update)

Been trying to temp root a few installed HTC desire HD with the new OTA 2.3.3 update but during the temp root process the icon goes yellow then it just sits on a black screen (with just the task bar up on top showing) for 20+ mins. and root does not happen.
I tried this while connected via usb (with the app installed visionary+ v14) with usb developer mode on or what ever it's called .. even tried re-starting and re-trying to no avail.. did they "patch" it in the latest update?
*edit fixed typo from 2.2.3 to 2.3.3 =P

You need to downgrade first...
I don't know if this method is still working with Gingerbread, but it was with Froyo and the Visionary symptoms were the same...

Ugg, ya I figured if I downgraded I could.. but I would really like to keep this OTA update few things I liked about it and as the phone is pretty much new I want to keep it as close to stock as possible... no one heard of any new exploits/updates that could allow temp root on the new OTA yet?

If you look in the development section you will find several ROM's that are very close to stock such as LeeDroid and there's even a one GB ROM that is has been rooted and pretty much nothing added.
There's no reason for you not to downgrade as you can upgrade again with a near as damn it customised GB ROM.

Revolution HD is great
I never tried any other rom (yes I'm an Android noob !), but I don't feel like it, i'm happy with Revolution.
It's exactly like stock, only smoother with better battery life and root.
I hesitated a long time before I installed a custom ROM on my DHD, waiting was a waste of time. Custom ROM are WAY better (in my opinion). Just remember to reade a lot of topics before, in order to know where you're going, what kind of problems you could face, and how to solve them. There's a lot of stuff and it all looks hard to get at first, but in the end it's not that hard.

If you want your things backed up use Mybackup from the market. Also once you go down the rooting lane eventually you will install a custom ROM which is way better than stock. Try it for yourself and see the difference..

right now to get root for 2.3.3, u need to be downgrade first. anyway, in the dev corner, they have 2.3.3 stock but rooted.

that is for 2.3.3 but your thread title mention 2.2.3, so don't know its a typo or u still prefer running on Froyo

before updating to the gingerbread u first have to do radio s-off. other wise u r unable to get root on it. i have installed leaked version for my phn. i also didnt know that, struggle hard to find and solve problem to dwngrade my phn. did it successfully, now i m running my phn with gingerbread fully root with gingearbreak 1.20 version.

thanks for all these amazing and quick replies ... I used to own a htc polaris and i always used custom roms.. my main issue is this, this is a company phone (it's mine.. but if there are ever issues with it i have a full warranty (even if i break it). Thus i wanted to achieve a temproot, just to freeze bloatware but not leave any "permanent" marks on the phone which if sent in for warranty would void it.
Eventually i will toss custom roms on it for sure, but since it's only 2 weeks out of the box i'd rather save it like this, at least for the first year.. if only there was a easy way to just freeze all that "crap" and not mod it with s-off or what not then i'd be so happy..
Unless s-off and such can be reverted and i can then work my way back .. but the problem is.. if i break it, and can't then "re-eable" s-on and so on and they see it they will not pay for the "fix" they are assses about it here in italy..

one of the main reasons i switched was for SIP calling (got a new data plan) .. if i go ahead with s-off / custom rom and all.. can I revert back in case i ever need to send it in for repair or .. does it leave traces?

I have a motorola defy with android 2.1 eclair(2.1-update1). and motoblur version 2.21.0.MB525.Retail.en.GB. and its been a while since the 2.2 update is out. bt when i goto system updates in the settings menu and search for updates, i am told that no update is available. i wanna know y. and i dont know any other way to update my device. kindly show me how to update.
Another thing is that i thought of rooting my device but i didnt find any benefits for me to root.
I wanna know that if i root my device. will i loose motoblur? because i really like it. and if rooting can delete motoblur. if i unroot it, will i get motoblur back?
i am really lookin forward for help.
my cousin has a t-mobile version and he has successfully updated his device. and its faster and smoother than mine. so i really need help.

OTA update availability is dependent on your carrier, check the moto website for your region instead.
Root just enhances rights but won't delete motoblur or anything. If don't see a need to root, you don't need to root naturally.

CM7 is a custom rom that can be run on the Defy, it is very fast, and has a new feel. Look it up on youtube!
Root your device using SuperOneClick. Much easier.

if you feel there is no need to root, and happy with your ROM, then why root? no need to root just because the world roots their phone. if you feel that you need to maximise your phone potential, rooting is the way to go, but you gotta be more hardworking and learn up more about rooting and stuffs before doing it

cm7 is snappy but there isnt any motoblur. so no contacts frm facebook. no facebook integration well i thnk i'll root first.

I waited for so long for the 2.2 update for the defy couldn't resist any longer so i updated to the SEA-15 couldn't be happier its nice and stable haven't had any troubles so far i have used the cm7 i loved that to but never could get the market i have installed gapps but still never showed.

yes, CM7 is far better than motoblur crap.
and it's gingerbread already.

I know there are many posts on this topic .. I've been reading whole night last night but I couldn't find the answer... tried so many things - Z4root, super 1 click root and etc. but I can't get my phone to root. In z4root it just goes back to home screen some time after I start the program and the phone is not rooted. In Superoneclick it says Failed at the end after being unable to push the busybox or whatever its name was.. I just updated my phone about a week or so ago cause I thought 22 is out.. instead I got this lazy update for 21 which now I see could be the reason the phone can't root. I should've rooted it earlier anyway here are my specs:
Sys Version Moto Version 2 51 1 MBM525 Retail en CEE
Firmware Version 2 1 update1
APflex Version GAS ASIA USAJORDANRTCEE P031
Anyone can offer a way to root that is reversible? I don't wanna root If I'm gonna be unable to unroot it later. It probably won't have problems with the root and after (when i make a backup) but my phone is only 6 months old and I have 1.5 yrs left warranty.. and I'm like 99% sure that if they see the phone is rooted they're gonna void my warranty. Again sorry for the duplicate thread but again I read so many threads and I couldn't find a way to root it.. also if you wanna know the reason I decided to root - ad-hoc. I just got a wireless adapter and realized android doesn't work with ad-hoc but then I saw that there is a fix.. still this fix requires rooted phone. ANd that's it

Well.. the easiest method is to update to 2.2 and then root with SuperOneClick. SHould work and is reversible. Plus, the 2.2 Update is getting rolled out anyway.
If you don't wanna update, you might want to give a full wipe a try.

I wanna update it's just that the 2.2 is not out yet for my phone. Still I tried with factory reset and still can't root.. I guess it's this update. I hope it's gonna be able to root at 2.2 update.. cause I don't wanna flash non-factory ROMs, just wanted to get root privileges.

Well.. it is available for your phone. You have a Defy.
For me, at last a fresh .sbf flash with RSD Lite solves every problem. But it is on your behalf, if you wanna flash a rom yourself or not.

Thing is I don't want to flash it I want a stock regular rom update from Motorola :/

Me too bt 2.2 is only available for t mobile.

I have a Tmo Defy also and updated to the stock 2.2...
I personally rooted using GingerBreak.apk which was very easy to do and from there i downloaded Root Explorer and weeded out alot of the MotoBlur crap that was slowing down the phone...
Then i downloaded Milestone Overclock from the market and SetCPU and overclocked it to be running as a 1GHZ speed and after getting rid of the MotoBlur crap im easily getting 35 hours of battery life on one charge and it is sooo much quicker to respond to everything..
My answer to why root the phone is to make it the phone that it should be without the drag of all the other junk..
But thats just my opinion..
