Once on 2.2, no root....

What's the best way to get rooted. I've tried te avalauncher way, they tell me I have to be rooted to use it. I've tried the simple root OTA, but when it's suppose to take you to factory restore, my phone goes to a backup/restore screen, so it fails cause I can't restore it. Please give me assistance.
I am running 2.2 from a manual install. No root.

You have to wait until the guys here find a way for p eople to root once they have 2.2 . That could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks

Most likely you are NOT going to be able to root since you ran the OTA update for 2.2....
That is why you should read what you are flashing and know the consequences prior to doing so. Every thread that contained the download for the 2.2 leak said that it will make you lose root and the ability ( for now ) to gain root status.
You need to wait until one of the geniuses figure out a way to do it.
Sorry about your luck.

1. wrong forum, should be in Q&A
2. if you did the manual update from Sprint, you will have to wait until the devs here create a root method for stock 2.2 is developed. Any existing root method will not work at all.

You installed the plain OTA update? The one that says "not rooted yet" on the thread title?
For each new update, HTC tries to protect its software from being rooted. The last update required users to exploit a Flash Lite vulnerability and took a while. You will probably have to wait a long time before you can root this, since it doesn't have Flash Lite.
For future reference, root first THEN update to a rooted rom released by our devs. You can't just install Ava's rom on top of stock 2.2, it prevents you from doing so.

I'm sorry but HOW MANY posts were there saying if you want to keep root, DO NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE?? Ugh...
And yes I know this isn't constructive but sometimes people just need a slap on the back if the head.

I'm in the same boat. After trying hard to resist the urge, I gave in and installed the leak. After finding the rooted version, I tried to use the 1.47 RUU to go back but it error-ed out. I'm so bummed I can't go back. Oh well; I knew the risk I was taking though so I guess I have to live with it...

By digging thru it and finding an exploit.
Which will most likely happen for the 2.2 update as well, just not as of yet.

With a ROM, you can run through the zip file and essentially take out the parts that would remove root and modify as you see fit to put on an already rooted device -- the device isn't running all the security checks on the ROM, since it's already been rooted to remove those. Much easier, almost trivial.
If you have a non-rooted device, though, you have to find a way to get the device, not the ROM, rooted. The device isn't going to take an unofficial ROM. Big difference, since you have to exploit something already on the device somehow. With the last OTA update, it was Flash Lite that could be exploited for root access to the device. With this one, no one has found a method to root the device once the OTA has been applied (and probably won't really try that hard until the official version is released, in case it closes any exploits that are in the version floating around now).

I have no idea how it was "hard to resist" when AVA's rooted version showed up at 5:30pm and netarchy's showed up around 9pm. They showed up before any official sprint OTA. Lets also not forget the hundreds of posts warning people that this would happen.

The "rooting method" allows you to get into restricted areas of the phone to install stuff. The act of rooting is breaking into the phone itself, not into the rom. The rom itself is fully accessable and can be hacked up, its just getting it onto the phone is the hard part.
Essentially your phone, stock, is a box that's locked from the inside. For older versions people figured out how to unlock it, so that you can put any hacked up rom onto it. The new OTA, no one knows how to get in yet.
Don't know if that makes sense. It's pretty easy to understand if you understand OS permissions.

Because someone takes the CONTENT of the update, and applies it piece-by-piece to an already rooted image, ignoring the bits that replace HBOOT and etc.

I'll tell you why. The thread gets to 200 pages. There are people saying it works, sucks, bricks, awesome, hate it, stay away, success, etc. After reading 40 pages of it you have no idea up from down. Speaking from someone that is not familiar with Android rooting. It's frustrating. Then you go to one of the other 50 threads and it's all the same.
I never saw anywhere that if I installed the leak i'd be screwed. I'm fine with that though. I have 2.2 and can wait. Just annoyed i've spent hours of my day on this.

Is it possible that someone here starting to working on rooting EVO after Froyo OTA?

I've been using my EVO for a while, and I did OTA to Froyo last night. I would like to try root it after a while, just want to know if there were anyone starting to work on the way for the EVO after Froyo upgrade?
Or, for non-rooted evo, can i do downgrade to old version official ROM, then root it?

Not possible yet...if you were previously rooted and updated to OTA im sure you knew what you were doing and the consiquences because its all over the forums...for now you're just going to have to wait it out....no word on root-able 2.2 yet.

I know unrevoked is working on a root but unless it has full nand unlock I wouldn't use it.

Well will be happy when someone does I want a stock rooted 2.2. Now im also wondering if there is a new way we have to root. Seems like everytime we get an update they have to come up with a new way to root. I have looked and read almost everything. Was wondering if someone can help a little. Sorry for hi-jacking OP.

almost every update they will fix the current way we root. there already is and has been a stock 2.2 rooted in development forums. Before you can use it you have to be rooted however and if you are already on stock 2.2 that could be a while for them to find a way to exploit a bug to let you root again.

OK was making sure that rooted stock was good. Also i thought there wasnt a way to root yet from a 2.2, just making sure. Thanks!

You are right.. If you have 2.2 unrooted on your phone you cannot root it at this time. However if you have a 2.1 rooted phone you can flash a 2.2 Rooted ROM. Rooting a ROM pre-installed is different than rooting a ROM that is already installed on your phone.

nah, i didn't root my phone on 2.1. and i do know if i rooted, I should avoid official OTA when it cames, cuz it's highly possible to brick your phone, and at least, you will ruined your root for sure.
I guess i have to wait for a while to see someone publish confirmed way to do that.
what about downgrade? if so, how does it work?

You cannot downgrade. The upgrade to 2.2 updates your HBOOT. None of the RUU's will accept this updated HBOOT, causing the installation to error out.

I'm stuck on the leaked Froyo update, had tried simple root and unrevoked and not luck, does anybody knows how to root HTC EVo 4G Froyo 2.2
software version 3.26.651.3 (beginer here)

Not possible on that version yet.

for now their is nothing you can do untill either HTC sends an OTA update to allow you to get the newest OTS Update or untill someone figures out a new root method for 2.2

God forbid a question go in the Q&A Forum.

Maybe you can flash a stock previous OTA (the 1.76 one) then try simple root? Maybe you can install 2.2 rooted after that?

There is another forum post that says you can go to the sprint store and they will downgrade you to 1.47 as long as you have .3. I am going to go try to do this today and then try to root after.

I wonder if everyone who wanted to be rooted did not update on the OTA Froyo.
I did not see any reason to root when it seemed that all the roms had issues before the update.

It is not a question on will there be people trying to do this. I am sure a lot of the devs are. The question is will they be able to find an exploit to be able to.

There just does not seem to be any urgency to root Froyo. I see not mention in any of the forums I monitor.

A- What? You can root without flashing a rom... Why? Many reasons of which one is to be able to tether without paying Sprint a stupid fee for using the wifi router which doesn't need a custom rom.
But I don't quite know what you mean by "all" the roms had problems.... Simply not true, Most of the roms are and have been nothing more than stock roms with root access, with Sprint crap removed or mabey small changes in icons, lock screens, or rosies. The only time people start having issues in when you get into overclocking and changing kernels for reasons like higher fps's or 5 point multitouch. I have been running 2.1 roms with nothing broken or not working and 2.2 roms (.3 and .6) with everything working fine(4g, wifi tether, fps fix, overclocked, 5 point multitouch, etc)
The only people at this point that are waiting for a 2.2 root are the people that were too stupid impatient to wait 2 hrs before the .3 was rooted and reverted to stock to flash the pre-release 2.2 or people that updated first before realizing how much nicer it is to have a rooted phone.
Everyday new EVO owners are bringing there new phones home by the thousands and getting online trying to see how they can get root. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out that the devs here have found a way to root a new 2.2 EVO before you even read this.

The Unrevoked team is working on it, but they don't have real root in the first place.

Its only been out for 5 days calm down. Im pretty sure the devs chat with each other through im and what not. as well i rather see them working on a root process then posting on here. if you want root then you should of not updated if you had no choice because you got the phone after the 31st - 1st then your sol right now

Don't see no reason why not. It's an open source OS it's only a matter of time for a dev to find a way. Let's just hope for all of your guys that are not rooted or decided to un root to get 2.2, it's sooner rather than later.

I am willing to test it when it come out. It's only a phone.

I noticed something interesting when I stopped by the Sprint store yesterday.
There was an older gentleman there purchasing an Evo. I felt a little sad because I knew that poor phone would never get hax'd. The manager instructed the sales person to charge the phone and make sure to run the update after activation.
My guess is that the majority of Evos from this point on will come with Froyo, so I'm sure there will be an effort to root.

I would like to see a one step method to root that has a hundred pages of "Thank You" rather that the hundred pages of problems and explanations I see now.

I am planning to buy the HTC desire 2day .. but am living in egypt.. so we didnt get the froyo update yet :/ .. so i was wondering if the lvl 1 rooting (named shell rooting) done to the desire using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 will allow me to install apps to the sd card and installing themes maybe.. because those are the only 2 things that i need that cant be done in the 2.1 stock ROM
I used the search feature.. but couldn't find anything about rooting levels .. the above thread mention there are 3 levels of rooting.. so i dont really know the difference.. never owned an android device before
Oh .. and i bricked my last htc phone after flashing a rom.. so i wont ever flash a custom rom again.. so here goes my next question.. i can root the phone and use the stock rom while enjoying the rooting features or do i have to install a custom rom? and when the official middle east froyo update is released can i easily unroot the phone and install the new update?

yes shell rooting will let you do everything you want to do, the only thing it lacks is write access to the nand chip while the device is booted, but it does allow it from recovery, dont worry about bricking, unrevoked is fool proof now

Okay last 5 questions lol ... plz bear with me... as i cant really risk losing another 700$ phone
1- am a bit confused... should i use unrevoked rooting or the lvl 1 rooting mentioned in link in the above post .. which one allows me to install apps on sd card and install themes with minimum alteration to the stock rom? anyone of them is 100% safe?
2- i can continue using my stock rom and still enjoy the rooting features.. no need to flash custom roms .. right?
3-am i going to be able to update my rooted phone when the official froyo is released or do i have to unroot it?
4- lets say that for any reason i have to use the phone's warranty ... so i have to unroot my phone 1st b4 going to htc .. is it easily done?
5- a bit offtopic: The only way i found to change themes without altering the stock rom is using 3 apps called : PandaHome,OpenHome and aHome (themes for these apps are even posted on the android market) .. but the thing is .. do they require a vanilla android or they are compatible with sense ui too?

1 unrevoked imho is more simple and more popular and tested

4 easier than rooting just download ruu file, run on your pc connected to phone and thats all. U will loose root+old rom+data+custom recovery image

1. Go with Unrevoked, it's safe and most commonly used method for rooting HTC Desires, check your Hboot version beforehand to see if it's compatible (it should be if you're on 2.1 eclair) and just make sure you read the guide properly first and nothing should go wrong
Rooting will not give you A2SD or A2SD+, you'll have to install a custom ROM to get those benefits (or wait for Froyo with its own Apps2SD function)
You also won't be able to flash themes as the stock ROM is odexed and won't support it, you'll need to flash a deodexed custom ROM for that.. although you can use apps like LauncherPro to customise your phone a little.
2. Yup, rooting doesn't mean you have to change the ROM, it just means you have the choice to through the additional Recovery program installed during rooting
3. You can apply the OTA froyo update, it'll unroot your phone though.. you could use Unrevoked again to get root afterwards
4. I would definitely recommend unrooting the phone if possible before running a warranty claim, I haven't had to do it but I've read it's relatively easy
5. All the launcher/home replacements should work fine with Sense, i've got LauncherPro/Sense/Launcher2 (vanilla android home) all working fine on mine, just install ClearDefaultsHome so you can choose which Home screen you want
The safe option is wait for the Froyo update, it'll give you Apps2SD.. but personally I'm glad I rooted and flashed a custom ROM, made the phone so much better! It to follow all the rooting/flashing tutorials properly then you should be fine, though obviously there are risks involved.. as you already know!

[Q] Motorola defy update and root

I have a motorola defy with android 2.1 eclair(2.1-update1). and motoblur version 2.21.0.MB525.Retail.en.GB. and its been a while since the 2.2 update is out. bt when i goto system updates in the settings menu and search for updates, i am told that no update is available. i wanna know y. and i dont know any other way to update my device. kindly show me how to update.
Another thing is that i thought of rooting my device but i didnt find any benefits for me to root.
I wanna know that if i root my device. will i loose motoblur? because i really like it. and if rooting can delete motoblur. if i unroot it, will i get motoblur back?
i am really lookin forward for help.
my cousin has a t-mobile version and he has successfully updated his device. and its faster and smoother than mine. so i really need help.

OTA update availability is dependent on your carrier, check the moto website for your region instead.
Root just enhances rights but won't delete motoblur or anything. If don't see a need to root, you don't need to root naturally.

CM7 is a custom rom that can be run on the Defy, it is very fast, and has a new feel. Look it up on youtube!
Root your device using SuperOneClick. Much easier.

if you feel there is no need to root, and happy with your ROM, then why root? no need to root just because the world roots their phone. if you feel that you need to maximise your phone potential, rooting is the way to go, but you gotta be more hardworking and learn up more about rooting and stuffs before doing it

cm7 is snappy but there isnt any motoblur. so no contacts frm facebook. no facebook integration well i thnk i'll root first.

The first google search result for "superoneclick" is just what you are looking for..

I waited for so long for the 2.2 update for the defy couldn't resist any longer so i updated to the SEA-15 couldn't be happier its nice and stable haven't had any troubles so far i have used the cm7 i loved that to but never could get the market i have installed gapps but still never showed.

yes, CM7 is far better than motoblur crap.
and it's gingerbread already.

I know there are many posts on this topic .. I've been reading whole night last night but I couldn't find the answer... tried so many things - Z4root, super 1 click root and etc. but I can't get my phone to root. In z4root it just goes back to home screen some time after I start the program and the phone is not rooted. In Superoneclick it says Failed at the end after being unable to push the busybox or whatever its name was.. I just updated my phone about a week or so ago cause I thought 22 is out.. instead I got this lazy update for 21 which now I see could be the reason the phone can't root. I should've rooted it earlier anyway here are my specs:
Sys Version Moto Version 2 51 1 MBM525 Retail en CEE
Firmware Version 2 1 update1
APflex Version GAS ASIA USAJORDANRTCEE P031
Anyone can offer a way to root that is reversible? I don't wanna root If I'm gonna be unable to unroot it later. It probably won't have problems with the root and after (when i make a backup) but my phone is only 6 months old and I have 1.5 yrs left warranty.. and I'm like 99% sure that if they see the phone is rooted they're gonna void my warranty. Again sorry for the duplicate thread but again I read so many threads and I couldn't find a way to root it.. also if you wanna know the reason I decided to root - ad-hoc. I just got a wireless adapter and realized android doesn't work with ad-hoc but then I saw that there is a fix.. still this fix requires rooted phone. ANd that's it

Well.. the easiest method is to update to 2.2 and then root with SuperOneClick. SHould work and is reversible. Plus, the 2.2 Update is getting rolled out anyway.
If you don't wanna update, you might want to give a full wipe a try.

I wanna update it's just that the 2.2 is not out yet for my phone. Still I tried with factory reset and still can't root.. I guess it's this update. I hope it's gonna be able to root at 2.2 update.. cause I don't wanna flash non-factory ROMs, just wanted to get root privileges.

Well.. it is available for your phone. You have a Defy.
For me, at last a fresh .sbf flash with RSD Lite solves every problem. But it is on your behalf, if you wanna flash a rom yourself or not.

Thing is I don't want to flash it I want a stock regular rom update from Motorola :/

Me too bt 2.2 is only available for t mobile.

I have a Tmo Defy also and updated to the stock 2.2...
I personally rooted using GingerBreak.apk which was very easy to do and from there i downloaded Root Explorer and weeded out alot of the MotoBlur crap that was slowing down the phone...
Then i downloaded Milestone Overclock from the market and SetCPU and overclocked it to be running as a 1GHZ speed and after getting rid of the MotoBlur crap im easily getting 35 hours of battery life on one charge and it is sooo much quicker to respond to everything..
My answer to why root the phone is to make it the phone that it should be without the drag of all the other junk..
But thats just my opinion..
