took me 7-8 hours to root the samsung moment once we got a copy of the leaked android 2.1....this phone is setup completely different and i dont physically have it to test anything.
im doing some research and hope to figure out a solution, but it'll be hard for me to test it for sure.
if anybody else has some insight with previous HTC and android experience, that'd be great to hear some other opinions?!
or maybe an HTC phone with similar file system structure which was rooted?
joey do u plan on getting this phone? i had a moment but was lucky enough to get the evo off someone that went to i/o.....it would be awesome to have your kernels working on this bad boy!!!

yea, im heavily considering it. i qualify for my upgrade so for $199 and giving up a hardware keyboard for all the great hardware features this has, i think its worth it!
i hope to be able to compile a few kernels for you and everybody else

ah dont even worry about the onscreen keyboard it takes a second to get used to it. that was the reason why i picked the moment over the hero but i still found myself using swype lol. as of now im just using the htc keyboard and its pretty slick so far just have to train the dictionary.
i work for sprint, my indirect rep came in with his evo the other day and so i installed swype 1.25 on it. FREAKIN. AWESOME. also, MAD props to joeykrim. i have the moment and he has done SO many wonderful things with it. but it looks like im going to htc...
EDIT: joey, i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see you move to the evo and see what that genius brain can cook up. if you ever need a tester, im all over it. been with you on sdx since the days you and speedrabbit were bustin down and fixing 1.5.
IM getting the EVO day of release and maybe another for testing. Let me know when you want to get this thing a try. i just hope it doesn't brick XD
knowing joeykrim, once he gets his grubby hands on an Evo - it'll be rooted there soon after.
glad to see some familiar names over here guys...
Looks like the question has just about been answered :>

HTC Evo 4G rooted in record time

Yeah but in case you guys haven't heard the shipped 2.1 rom you guys get may not be final. Sprint could easily push an update to close off root. Just look in the hero section, the final 2.1 RUU is still not able to be rooted by our best devs. Im not trying to worry anybody but it is a possibility.
Just saw CR's twitter post asking if anyone recieved the ota 1.42 update..........is this true? A new update for MTS?

on the t-mo forums it seems that someone has talked to customer service and they said that they are releasing an update to fix some problems that people had with the previous update and adding HSPA+ support. but no mention of froyo so idk we will see i guess
Ok just called 611.
The OTA system has been down since yesterday.
No one knows when it will be running again but when it does the update will be sent out on Mondays, Wednesdays & Friday evenings..
The update is just a lot of fixes for what the other update caused..
Genius Button, Freezing, My Fave, Voice commands, Wifi, Phone Call log..
Nothing special really .. but defo not Froyo.

This person was me, lol. This information was delivered from Tier 3 Technical Support. I also found out some heft info regarding my Vibrant as well. Customer Service Reps and any technical support below really don't know much as opposed to that level. I was surprised... But nevertheless, allow me to explain.
A lot of MTS owners have been reporting signal fluctuations and that's because of what I had said about this previous update locking the signal to HSPA. Well, that was a test update in that regard because it was all to test the server load. (It's not handling it well, lol...) So this next patch will fix many of the bugs and will allow the MTS to use the HSPA+ servers. I have an ETA for Froyo on my Vibrant but not the Slide, sorry.
wat is the eta for the vibrant im sure all the vibrant users including me wouldn want to know

Well, I don't know if you've heard but there were rumors of the GPS fix to be baked into Froyo. Sadly, that isn't the case. There will be the GPS patch this month (which is rumored to begin getting pushed around the 17th-20th) and then there will be another sub-patch (which is for the battery meter, address book force closes, multiple contacts and plenty of other bugs) released once the GPS fix is complete.
Then we've got October and that's when T-Mobile is planning on starting the rollout for Froyo. It is to be completed before the middle of November. I suppose this is all factoring minimal to no issues with the OTA's coming out prior.
Sidenote: With this whole Cliq debacle, I was told that from this point forward T-Mobile will try to focus their Android lineup on mostly vanilla Android. (I wouldn't mind more Sense devices though. I personally don't care for Espresso but my wife loves her slide and the UI.) They are really having to bite the bullet since the Behold II and now the Cliq's promised update to 2.1 from Q2 which it's now almost Q4 with no update.

Why do they insist on giving on these worthless updates, instead of working on an actual Froyo rom? They waist their time on something that's like 20MB, when that time could be used for something else..Other HTC phones are getting 2.2(inc sense). There are minor diff b/t sense & espresso, excluding faves, genius,themes,etc...

They have different teams that work on the software of the device. For example they'll have a team who test in-market software while others work on testing and developing for future software.
Give these guys a break. They work hard at what they do.
Thanks for the response everyone, I will leave this topic up for future updates to the slide up to and including froyo.

Yes, there is an OTA on the way... CR has seen it in-person. No, it's definitely NOT Froyo. Nothing overly exciting, but for those people who run stock-like ROMs it will definitely be an upgrade.
My letter (linked here) is to address a specific time-line for Froyo rollout on our device.
siccmade, can you PLEASE get in touch with ChiefzReloaded or myself ASAP? My GTalk is nbetcher (at) gmail [dot] com. Thanks!

False alarm everyone... still need someone to pull the OTA once they get a notification. Note: if you get a notification on anything other than: Stock or CR_Mod then it's likely a bug. Please download the OTA package, but make sure to NOT apply it!
Thanks everyone.

I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to think we are gonna get treated like the HD2 was......I mean HTC and Windows gave there dedicated users a great device with the ancient Windows 6.5.....and while we may be running Android 2.2 (which is beginning to become old news) we are running an ancient UI (HTC Sense 1.0) while the new phones are getting Sense 2.0+.....sounds familiar to me with the new Windows 7 devices coming out and the HD2 stuck on 6.5......I really think froyo will be the last major update for the Evo....at least until Q3 or Q4 of this year......What do u guys think???? Id be happier with either Gingerbread or the New Sense or a combination of both......
Its still Sprint's flagship smartphone. The epic doesn't get any love, and I really don't see the shift overtaking it. Does it even have a named replacement yet?
We'll at least get new sense, if not gb soon. Didn't we just see a sense gb rom dump...I lost the thread, but HTC is at least working on something

I think that the evo will get 2.3. more apps would sell if the evo got 2.4 also...i would not be surprised to see sprint request 2.4 from htc but ill settle for sprint requesting 2.3.
contact sprint if you want to push for an update to 2.3
I dont remember, maybe one of you folks know.
What was the time delta between Google's release of Froyo bits and Sprint/HTC's release of the 2.2 OTA upgrade for EVO?

Sprint is not releasing new phones as quickly as compared to other carriers so I think the EVO will be a flagship phone longer than most other phones.

I don't see how that is possible when from my knowledge that phone is a GSM phone that supports HSPA+, not WiMax, not CMDA.

You're correct, it is a GSM device.
optimus came out as a gsm phone to, and not after long it was on all 4 carriers
Well I really hope it doesn't come to Sprint. Knowing them, they'll get it and think that they don't need another flagship phone and we'll never get our EVO 2. Besides, we sure as hell don't need another gimmick phone since the Echo will be the reigning king in that department.
evo2 would be nice, but in all fairnest optimus 3d is pretty good phone. hdmi, dlni, 3d, dual core prosessor, 4.3 inch screen etd. has pretty impressive packege, and would be good addition to sprints line up. about echo I really dont know what they was thinkin. phone looks like its ben desined on a launch break. lame
Well Sprint can ask for HTC to upgrade us to a 2.0 Sense but I doubt that will happen as HTC is more focused on their new lines coming out which is fail on their part.
Sprint needs to learn how to push harder for updates out of HTC and remove the bullcrap from their shipped ROMs like their bloatware.
LG & Sprint have not really faired well together imo. Lutus & Lotus elite = garbage, Optimus besides having Android 2.2 is really no better than the sanyo Zio. The best phone they've had for Sprint was the Rumor 2.
I work at a Sprint store & I see the LGs come back all the time broken & not working right. Keep the 3D on GSM & give me an EVO2 as well.
If you check out the htc community website, there was a response from htc about the update to 2.3.
Linky
Basically we have to wait and see if htc will allow 2.3 to be on the EVO in not at all by passing "quality standards".
This is frustrating...

yeah true. However tmo would not be the first to go back on their word. I have called and complained alot about not getting upgrade and I never get a real answer
Use NB_Mod, it's the leaked 2.2 update.
The HTC Slide is quite a lot of phone for the money. Easily enough for many android users.
If T-mobile gives an update, how will they sell you a new phone?
I think this whole leaving out official release updates will start to be a trend. Unless you have one of the official google phones (Nexus one/S) i wouldn't expect too many updates in the future.
Froyo should be coming. I don't believe it's said that they will never release it. Just gotta keep waiting for it maybe by June(year after release) we'll see it.
If you really don't want to be sitting there waiting for it, As musicman said use the NB_Mob.
Something is wrong with my screen so I have to send my phone back for an exchange, can someone help me on unrooting and getting s-on orignal recovery bootloader etc... or post a link to a guide that's to date and actually works? Also will it brick my device if I mess up? Also when receive the exchange phone will I be able to root it? I'm asking that cause I thought about what if they changed something in the software? Idk just a thought, help is apriciated!

I haven't tried it myself, but this is generally the most popular way to do it: (http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/). There is a risk of bricking, but if you follow the instructions exactly you should be fine.

sorry bro, the MT4G slide is going to be quite a lot better than the G2 (aside from the disgusting flavor of android you get with it out of the box and the fact that it's going to inevitably be ugly).
it's going to be better from a hardware standpoint than the G2x (LG, really?) also, so I'm not sure what you're on about there... and of course, it has a phys keyboard which already makes it better than any touch-only phone out there as far as I'm concerned.
I'll pick up an MT4G slide if I can, but I'm not going to do anything immoral or spend any extra money to get it.
That's my whole point, I don't like the My Touch series, sense and the ugly ass hardware, id rather keep my g2. Hopefully they come out with the G3 around october/november but idk. The G2x would be a lot better if it was made by htc and had a keyboard, g2x slide maybe?

yeah, not yet... which is why I don't understand why half of the modding community is so pissed over the delays in the gingerbread releases. if they install the ota update, they lose root and all of the capability they have learned to love.
plus, we already have had gingerbread for so long in a form that is far superior to anything the carriers/htc are going to try to shove into the phone.

I'd be all over a g2x slide. I'd take an MT4G slide as well, I just might have to buy a mini paper bag to cover its face so no one in public saw its hideousness.
since the G2 is already dying out, maybe we'll see a new offering sooner than we would have.. I would have expected a 2012 release for its successor, but all of this eol stuff has me thinking t-mo has something up their sleeve.
PS: the guide that cooller linked you to is about as good as it gets. have followed it before and had no issues getting back to stock.
Well it doesn't matter anymore because since I bought my phone off craigslist I'm not eligble for manufacturers warranty. But yeah a g2x slide would be sick. And if the G3 does come out sometime in the near future I'm hoping dual core, a keyboard like the g1, and a better hinge system.
