So, I wanted to format my card and go back to having the apps locally. The thread for manually partitioning your card is fine and dandy. However, on my G1, I know when I did this, my phone left traces of the apps that were on the sd all over my menus, such as icons being there, but of course the apps are no longer on the sd card.
Should I simply go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Filter > Downloaded, and uninstall everything there first and then format the card? Then reinstall my apps...?

That will probably work. My personal experience with apps2sd on my G1 was that a wipe was the only sure-fire way to make sure everything goes smoothly. YMMV.

Who do you think you are!?!?
I actually meant to mention in my first post that I wasn't sure if this belonged in Q&A or not since it was a2sd, which is only available to rooted folks so far. Thanks.

I've done a search on the forums here, and haven't been able to come to a solid answer on this... I went completely App crazy and ended up almost filling my Evo's internal Storage. I used sdmove to move whatever apps supported move to SD over to the SD card. Now I have about 68mb of storage left, but I feel like that too will run out quickly.
Will APPS2SD allow me to move apps that don't nativly support Froyo's Move to SD over to the SD card? Would it have any ill effects on the phone?
If it's safe to set up, how would I go about setting APPS2SD up? Do I just partition the card with an ext partition via RA recovery?

that is correct. after you partition your sd card go into terminal emulator and type a2sd check. It will tell you if it is working. Next type a2sd help. That will show you all the commands and descriptions

Also you can move the davlink cache too the sd card and that frees up a lot of space too.

Type "a2sd help". This will give u a list of all commands that apps2d has to offer. Type "a2sd cachesd" to move David to your SD partition.

OK, so I enabled ap2sd, and moved the cache over to SD. WOW, that gave alot of space. Before I moved the cache, I also noticed that my space boosted up to over 200mb. Does this mean all my apps were allready moved over to the SDCard? If so, does that also mean that all my apps will be installed to the SDcard from now on?
I just wanna make sure that I don't manually need to move them, and If I do, I need to figure out how I do that. ap2sd help didn't tell me how to manually move apps, so I am assuming its all done automatically now.

Bumping this thread. I'd like to know that answer to your question as well.
The apps are moved automatically....also there are commands that will move the apps from the sd card to int. Memory And back If you choose. And finally you can type in a2sd diskspace and and it will tell you the amount of space being used in the partition.

Hi guys I've been messing around with my phone all day. I have been restoring my apps back onto my phone and all that good stuff. I finally fixed my phone and when I was restoring my phone it tells me that my internal space is getting full. How is that possible if I only have 2 apps from the market installed? Any ideas?
thanks!
try clearing cache of your apps. If you have root access, download cachemate and use that. you can also move apps to your SD card to free internal space.
hope this helps
edit: you can also try wiping your phone back to stock if you continue with these issues
Weird I uninstaled Google maps update and and I now have 45MB of internal storage. lol??
Im restoring my apps then going to move them to my SD. Whats a good program to move them?
actually now it's giving me the error again..lol 45mb storage left too. weird

If you are using a custom ROM and it supports it then apps2sd because you can actually go beyond the 512 MB limit, you can make it as large as your entire SD card if you like... of course it has a trade off: the card must be repartitioned before you can use apps2sd meaning that you need to copy your card over a computer, partition and then copy back your stuff.
I use and would recommend that you use froyo to move apps to SD card. You can also move apps from the SD card back to your internal memory.
You can move most apps to SD Card; but some apps you do not have the option to move to SD card, and must remain on internal phone storage.
Follow these simple steps to move / to know whether the app can be moved or not.
1. Open Settings -> Applications ->Manage Applications and tap on the app you want to move.
2. Tap on the box “Move to SD card”.
3. Now tap on “On SD Card” to know whether your app has been moved or not.
You can also move back the app to phone memory by tapping on application and then selecting “Move to Phone” option.

The thing is..I only have 2 apps installed from the market and it's saying my internal memory is full. That just doesn't make sense.
Sprints stock ROM will give you a low storage warning when you have less than 45MB free space which I think is a little high. Thank god for apps2sd.
do you use the stock HTC mail app? if you do, try this: when you delete mail in the stock HTC mail app, it doesn't delete it, but just moves it to the 'Trash' folder? I've just cleared 6Mb that accumulated of the last month or so myself...
if all else fails, you might have to factory reset the evo.
thanks for all the help. so i needed up booting in recovery and clearing everything now it went to like 300mb and im restoring my apps. do you think i should put them on my SD card?
I would put what you can on your sd card...you can always move them back to the phone if needed
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
curious to know what caused that low memory problem in the first place? that's just weird.
i am not sure what causes the memory leak; but others i know with evos have had the same issue and a factory reset has solved the issue every time. good luck!
I have a question how do I install apps to SD card?
Why should I do it and what apps?
Are you rooted? I'm pretty sure that you can only move apps to the SD card if your rooted. And it's called Apps2Ext or something like that, you can only use it if your rooted(from what I know atleast.)
Easy.
There is an app in the market called "App 2 sd",this app automatically selects the apps that you can move from the phone over to your sd card. As for why you would want to do this well, for one thing and mainly by doing so you free up valuable space on the phone it self.Do your self a favor & pick up @least a 16gb sd card it makes life a whole lot easier. Hope this helps.

I was going to say that but isn't that just for rooted phones? Or is Apps2Ext only for rooted phones?
Your G2 has Froyo, which allows apps to sd without being rooted. If the app developer allows it, you can move the apps you choose to the fat32 partition of your sd card.
All you have to do is go to settings>>>applications>>>manage applications>>>click on the app of your choosing, then you will get the option to "Move to SD card"
Once you click on that, it will automatically be moved to the SD card. To confirm, in the manage applications page, you will see "On SD card" on the top right corner. Click on it, and you will see which apps have been moved.
Apps to SD is used basically just to save space. On older phones, like the G1, you could only install about 30 apps before the phone memory started to get full. They made apps2ext to fix this low memory problem once you had a rooted phone. Froyo fixes the need to even root the phone to get apps on the sd card.
Honestly, the G2 has plenty of space for me that I do not need apps to sd. I really only see the need for anyone to utilize this on the vision phones if you plan on having hundreds of apps installed.
Hope this helped.
it is helps a lot thank you. I thought the reason to tho apps to memory card list to make phone run faster
It actually runs slower to have the apps on the sd card. That was the one downfall of apps2ext on the G1, especially when you ran sense roms because a lot of things were run on the ext parition and were dependent on running from the sd card for it to work.
It is better to run them all on the phone memory, if at all possible, IMHO.

This is a BS version of A2SD. /.android-secure won't let you back your apps up the way /system/sd/app and /system/sd/app-private will, and the apps on the FAT32 partition won't start up on boot.
I hope the real A2SD is incorporated on Gingerbread builds.
2.2 Stock Rom, rooted, S-OFF
Apps are visible in the Settings-Applications-Manage Applications-Downloaded section, but there are no icons. Just a grayed out icon with a micro-sd card on it. Showing, what I assume to be, that it is on the SD card, but cannot be launched. The apps are not available via the app drawer.
Ideas?
Help anyone?
Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling them through the Market?
The market won't allow me to install anything. Whether it be a new app or a replacement for these. And starting over is not really a course I am looking to take unless absolutely necessary. Uninstalling and reinstalling 150+ apps does not sound like an entertaining time.
Also if it provides any clue, when in the setting-manage applications area, the sizes of the apps, that usually updates quickly, is forever stuck in the "computing..." phase.
150+ apps? Do you have any storage left? LOL
Sounds like you might have a SD Card problem.
A couple of suggestions -
1. Scan your SD Card (mounted in Windows) for errors. From "My Computer", right-click on the drive and go to Tools. Select the Disk Check.
2. Uninstall the "missing" applications. Go to Settings->SD & Phone Storage and Unmount SD Card. Try to install the applications. If this works, remount the SD Card when you are done. You can use this method to try to install new apps as well.
3. Some people have had luck with deleting the .android_secure folder from the SD Card (this is where Android stores your apps on the SD Card).
If you still can't download any new apps, you might want to go to Settings->Applications->All and clear try to clear the cache (and then the data if needed) and Force Close Market. This may help. If you notice that all of your downloaded apps disappear from the Market, downloading a new app usually fixes that problem for me.

185 actually (just did a quick count). And yes, plenty of storage. 32gb (with only 8gb taken up) sd card, and 200mb left on the internal.

1. Done, and done. No errors. I'm used to external and flash media, so this was one of the first things I did.
2. Unmounting the card gets a force close. I select it like normal, but it gives no confirmation, and after a bit gives me the force close message. Going to have to power off and remove the SD card for this option.
3. Noted, will look into that option shortly.
While I can force close and clear data from the market, the clear cache button does nothing. Trying option 2 now.
What ROM are you using? Is it possible that your launcher, widget, or some other system application is on the SD card?
Also, if you clear the Data, it automatically clears the cache, which is why it is grayed out.
If you have a terminal emulator application or access to adb, you can unmount the SD card from a shell and see if that helps.

Use a file manager to look for one of your apps, which I imagine you moved into the apps2sd "folder" on the sdcard. That should tell you the state of the sd card as well. When apps2sd is used it only moves part of the apk to the sdcard, that's why the system still sees the part not on the sdcard.
Get an apk from market ( except you can't ) to fix the symlinks.
If you do a nandroid restore, the issue will still be there cause you did use the ext partition, in apps2sd.
You do get one chance in market to reload all your missing apks, but if you close market it won't remember the missing apks.

Stock 2.2, rooted, s-off. Using LauncherPro, and no it is not on the SD card. I can navigate it easily and launch any applications from it that are not on the SD card.
Good to know about the data/cache link. Although the cache never acutally gets grayed out. I press the clear data button, confirm the decisions, and it stays in the "recalculating size" (might not be verbatim there) message and never goes away.
Good idea. Although I am going to report that the problem is fixed now, as I took a little more direct route. Steps are below for anyone that has the same problem as I:
Problem: Apps on the SD card are not loading. Visible in the Settings-Manage Applications area, but not unable to actually launch via shortcuts on home screen and do not appear in the app drawer. Unmounting the SD card via the settings gets a force close. Restarts do nothing, clearing the Data/Cache from the market app does nothing. This occurred randomly and has also occurred after apps that were installing/being updated from the market and got stuck in an "install loop", as in they said they were "installing" but never did.
My Solution: Power down, remove SD card, power up, force close market, clear data, power down, install SD card, power up, enjoy.
As stated above unmounting the SD card via terminal or adb might work as well. I cannot confirm as I went the more "direct" route. I thank everyone for their help. This community, quite simple, rules.
I am going to replace the tiny SD card on the DInc in order to avoid the "not enough space..." messages that appeared on the recent update and to put more stuff on it. Do I need to do anything special to switch them out? Back-up and format are the only things I can think of.
if you're talking about the "low on memory" warning that relates to the space available to install apps, I don't think replacing the SD card will fix that. There are some ROMs in the Dev section you can try, if you're rooted, that have that solved.
But as for setting up the new card, you can either make a backup of the original, or just copy the contents to your computer then move them to the new card. Check that the format is FAT32, as well. It's pretty painless.

+1 the NAG is from the phone being to full you can start to clean some of it out though. SDmaid and 1 click cache are both good apps to have to do some "spring cleaning"
