CDMA Desire - Any Custom ROMs yet? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed everything in this Desire section is related to the GSM Desire. Are there any custom ROMs yet for the CDMA Desire? I was to get the Clockworkmod recovery to boot from an update.zip and that appears to work ok but every Desire ROM I've tried refuses to boot.
I can't seem to find much information at all about the CDMA Desire via searching the forums or just searching on Google. From what I can tell all the hardware specifications are the same except for the radio (CDMA vs GSM). Might it be possible that current ROMs built for the GSM Desire will work for the CDMA version if a custom kernel for CDMA is compiled?

I wasn't even aware that a CDMA Desire existed!
Regards,
Dave

There was an Australian desire version. That's the only I can think about.
There is supposed to be an US version, but I think it's not available yet.

I have a desire in South Korea that has a WCDMA sim card in it running on the SK Telecom network. Are we saying that android 2.2 port that the devs here created will only work on GSM desires? Also, does anyone know if I use an unlock code on my phone if it disrupt my service?

Sounds to me like you have a regular Desire because WCDMA is part of the GSM standard for 3G!
Regards,
Dave

No CDMA Desire out there. You guys already have the Incredible, the Evo and Droid X that don't work anywhere else but America and you want more still?
Like Dave says WCDMA is a different variant/name of the 3G network.
Strange that the Roms aren't working for you. The innards should be the same inside.

I have a CDMA Desire. It's a test unit for one of the smaller carriers in the states (I'm not in the states) I'm using as an internet tablet/android plaything. If you guys want to know anything about it let me know.

The CDMA Desire has launched on U.S. regional carrier U.S. Cellular. Here's a link. I'll be picking one up tomorrow.

I'll be getting one in a couple of months. I'm curious if rooting/custom roms will work normally on it.

CDMA Desire
I have heard that Mighty Mike @ Mightyrom.com is working on a Desire Rom with 2.2!
Hes on Telus but his Touch Pro 2 Roms worked on US Celular!

The Telus Touch Pro 2 is a CDMA phone and so is the USC version. So it makes sense the ROMs would be compatible.
The Telus Desire is a GSM/HSPA phone - Telus launched an HSPA network in late 2009 and they're slowly trying to make their old CDMA network irrelevant. I can almost certainly guarantee you that his Desire ROM *won't* work on a CDMA Desire.

Well that would suck!

I am pretty sure we will not see any custom roms for our desires. However, thats not all that bad. If we can just get root. Then we can uninstall what we want, tweak what we want, Install wifi teather, etc..
I still think we can be rooted in almost the same manner as the incredible. Damn near exactly the same phone.
Anyone know how to get ahold of the unrevoked team? maybe they can help. They seem to root everything.

Anyone using the A8183 Desire (Telstra) with AT&T in the US?

I've been thinking about getting this unlocked model that is compatible with AT&T 3G. I was wondering if anyone here has done this, and is there a way to get a sort "US-ified" version of the official HTC ROM that can receive OTA updates.
Thanks.
i'm currently using the A8183 in Canada on the Rogers network, which uses the same freq as AT&T for 3g, works great for me. however, if you wait prob a month or so (or maybe even sooner) Telus/Bell will release a NAM of the Desire, they also use the same freq for 3g (Bell, Telus, Fido, Rogers, and AT&T all use 850/1900 for 3g)
i'm using an A8183 (Telstra) HTC Desire on AT&T... in my opinion, you won't get a US-type ROM without rooting and installing one of the custom ROMs... i'm using the DJDroid Froyo w/Sense ROM and have not had any problems. personally, i don't worry about OTA updates because i'll get them on xda first.
I too have an a8183 on at&t. The only problem is that at&t does operate on 1900 mhz for 3g, but 850 mhz will not completely fallout till the end of the 2010. So If you live in nc, ga, sc, or va . The southeast market. You won't have the 3g because they currently run 1900 mhz 3g. I can still stream music on edge pulling 100 kbs up and down.
Patience is a virtue and locally in NC I have seen an internal ATT map showing many cell site upgrades complete, but they have not switched it on yet for 850mhz.
Latest news is for Atlanta and Manhattan switched on.

Thanks guys. I think what I'm going to do is wait and see if AT&T comes out with their own version of the Desire this month, like has been rumored.
At&t will not get the desire. I am an employee and waited and waited. We may get the rumored dual core Qualcomm since it was just delivered to HTC and the incredible went to Verizon. So we are next for the bigger one.
There is a Samsung coming out Sunday, but I just love the support for HTC with xda. You will have 850mhz umts by the end of the year if you live in a 3g area.
What state are you in?

I think I may still wait to see what AT&T comes out with from HTC, even if it isn't the Desire. The new Samsung Galaxy S phone on AT&T looks nice, except for the fact that it doesn't have a camera flash. That's a big omission in my opinion.
I'm in Connecticut, where we already have 850 mhz.
Go for it , because gingerbread 3.0 will be a whole new class of devices. Maybe even dedicated graphics cards. But thats about a year away.
Plus the imei is not registered with ATT so you can get away with a 15 dollar data plan. Dude you got 850mhz. Shazam......

it's probably a good idea to wait. i got an a8183 a couple months ago, i love it but the only reason i got it was because my trusty tilt running eclair was run over and for some reason i didn't want to get a nexus (which is probably what i should have gotten). i was banking on the tilt lasting about another year so i could get on the dual core wagon but no dice. don't get me wrong, i love my desire but with all the cool guy stuff just over the horizon i wish at&t would have released the aria a couple months earlier, so i could have bought a less expensive phone to hold me over til the new stuff came out.

I see that Telus just announced they're getting the Desire soon, which will probably run on 850mhz and 1900mhz. So, I'll see what AT&T does and if nothing and the Telus version comes out, I'll get that one.
I live in North Carolina. How can you tell if they are using the 1900 or 850 band for 3g? I found someone selling the HTC Desire for $500/shipped and was going to get it until I saw this thread. Didn't know if there is a way to find out where AT&T had gone to 850 for 3G bands.
RTP area here and we are definitely on 1900 mhz, and will be strictly 850 mhz by the end of the year. Edge is pulling about 100 kbs up and down.

Well, there is 2 models of Desire as far as I know; the A8181 (Not AT&T 3G compatible) and the A8183 (Telstra version, compatible with AT&T 3G). If your Desire isn't working with AT&T, then chances are it's an A8181.

Remove your battery and on the phone lists the model number next to the imei. A8183 is what you need outside of the southeast market until 2011.

There appear to be 3 models of the 'classic' Desire:
A8181 - Euro version with 900mhz/2100mhz UMTS/WCDMA
A8182 - North American version with SLCD screen and 850mhz/1900mhz UMTS/WCDMA
A8183 - North American / Australian version with AMOLED screen and 850mhz/1900mhz UMTS/WCDMA
Hope that helps!
I'm using a htc desire A8183 in Colombia, and it works beautifully with excellent 3G network speed of navigation and a month ago I got the ota update for Android 2.2 Froy. I'm really happy with the phone

[Q] No data on T-Mobile G2

I got this really cheap T-Mobile G2 in the US which worked perfectly alright and brought it to to my own network overseas. I know the handset uses 3G on a totally different band but I believe edge connection should work, right?
Anyway, I unlocked it using the downgrade method. Then I installed CM7. I put my own sim card and it does pick up signal and I am able to make and receive phone calls but there is no EDGE. I already set the APN options correctly.
Any thoughts?
You sure the APN info is correct for your carrier? Ability to make calls, but no data are pretty good indications of wrong APN.
Yes, as long as the phone has the same GSM bands used by your local carrier, and you are unlocked, you should be able to get data via EDGE.
Isn't there a reason the us has G2 and the rest of the world has desire z? Aren't the bands different between the 2?

Just different bands for 3G. Your G2 has the proper GSM (voice and EDGE) to work in most parts of the world.
And the G2 name is just T-Mobile's branding and to signify the vanilla (no Sense) ROM. The Canada, Europe, Asia versions of the Desire Z all have different bands from each other.

Completely sure. Used the same sim I use in my main phone which is also android based. Could it be a radio issue? I was tempted to flash a new one but since Im not that familiar with this particular phone I don't feel like messing up, especially when all I want is the phone to work so I can sell it.
BTW, anyone interested PM me - although I believe I shouldn't post this here.

[Q] US Provider for European Desire

Hi there, I gonna be in the US for one year and plan to bring my desire with me. Is there an american provider using frequencies the european desire is capable of?
Is it possible to chance supported frequencies by flashing another radio or are they hardware fixed?

I think T-Mobile. You should check with them. Anyways the Desire is quad-band so you are in a good position to find a carrier.
Sry i forgot to mention that I am mainly concerned about 3G. Calling and texting shouldn't be a problem anywhere but I would really like to use a dataplan and use 3G.

[Q] Desire z with AT&T bands?

I'm trying to find a good phone for my GF and I need one that uses at&t bands for 3g
I saw this phones and it looks perfect for her... but I need to know which model has those bands...
can someone help me with this? please? =)
i think that by flashing an radio from bell from Canada it would do the trick BUT I'm not sure of it so it would be best for you to get an Desire HD/ Inspire 4G that it's more or less the same hardware just with no keyboard.
The thing is... I want it to have a keyboard =P

This won't work -- frequency support is set at the factory and cannot be changed. You need to actually get the Bell version of the Desire Z (model: A7275).

[Q] HTC Desire in China

Hi all,
I've recently moved to China and taken my Desire with me. I had assumed I could just unlock it and use a chinese sim but it doesnt seem to be working. From what i've read on various sites it seems China telecom (who are my new provider) use CDMA(?) and Evo-do(?). I'm not going to pretend to understand what these terms mean.
Does anyone know if there is a rom i can flash which will allow me to use the desire on this network? Failing that I do have a chinese lenovo a68e but all of the sites i've found for it so far are in chinese so if anyone can point me in the direction of a custom rom for it (english please ) which i can use i would also be grateful but i would much prefer to get my desire working.
Any help or advice you could give is very much appreciated.
Sorry mate, I'm guessing you have a GSM device (it have a sim card in it). GSM and CDMA are two completely different technologys, they have different hardware in them, that's why CDMA users brick there phones if they flash a GSM ROM. I don't think there is a way to just change GSM into CDMA by flashing a Rom.

My new phone has a sim card just like a uk one. I'll be honest and say I don't know much about any of this stuff but i've found good advice on this site and used roms and things found here before.
Are there CDMA sim cards and GSM sim cards?
It not problem in sim cards CDMA and GSM are network technologies, you have to buy CDMA phone(for example CDMA htc Desire). No ROM can help you. Here's more on CDMA and GSM.(link)
If you have a GSM device, China Mobile shall you go.
no, the difference is in hardware level, u can't do nothing
