Ok, I have my last minor issue to deal with I hope. HTC Sense is the only interface i can use. I tried disabling the HTC sense as default in the manage applications area then did a force shutdown of it. Pressed home and HTC sense reload automatically.
Is this apart of the update recently or I'm I missing.something ?
You can try installing Launcher Pro -- and when you hit Home it should give you a choice.

I suppose we all have to guess whether you've installed another launcher or not.
If you download home switcher you can set either one to your default.

N1 user here, but running Desire ROM. I've noticed that ever since Paul's released alpha17--which unlike his earlier builds is based on the Desire's release candidate--there's no longer Launcher2.apk. I can clear HTC Sense's defaults and press home, but... no option to pick Launcher2. Launcher2.apk doesn't exist in the ROM. Gone. Nada. Killed in action.
Obviously, as someone who's got root and can adb push Launcher2.apk from elsewhere, this isn't an issue for me. But if the Desire also lacks Launcher2, it means you guys (until it's rooted) can't switch to vanilla Android if the fancy takes you, which is weird. So, can any of you please check if you have got Launcher2 or not?
I want to root lol.
Have you tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645550?
Download the zip file. Extract the launcher.apk to your sd card. Browse to the file (for example use astro) and install it. Be sure to have checked the box "Allowing unkown software installation" (or something like that).
Does this work? Shouldnt need root access.
No, no. See, I don't need Launcher2 myself and even if I did, I can manually install it. It's just that I was led to believe that the Desire itself will retain Launcher2 and switching from vanilla Android to Sense would be no different from switching between home replacements (which was the case in earlier Desire alphas).
Ah ok, I see. Misunderstood your problem. I believe that we need definitely root for the Desire, this would fix many problems...
Launcher2 can be installed without root-access, so this is no problem. You just can't push it to the /system/app folder. You can still install it, and thereby placing it in /data/app.
It makes perfectly sense that HTC removed the Launcher2.apk from the release ROM, as this is a phone with HTCs own Sense UI.
I do agree that root-access is needed, but not for this incident.
using the desire there is an option to disable Sense UI, and you will end-up with a N1 experience.
Programs > Unknown Sources > HTC Sense > Controls > choose stop and select "launcher" .... and thats it
A quick question: When you use Launcher2 instead of Sense, can you still pinch to see all the pages?
Nope. You lose the ability to pinch and all HTC widgets.
Thanks.
And Sense can't work in landscape mode, right?
(and the HTC music player also?)

Wrong! there is no Launcher app to replace Sense, so it just automatically jumps back to default.

if your device is crippled than thats another story all together
That doesn't work now when i try it on mine it just kicks back in using htc sense.
Guess Paul didn't take out Launcher2 from his ROM for giggles, then. I wonder if you could just install Launcher2.apk extracted from an N1 ROM normally. Probably you could.

Correct; neither supports landscape mode.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but launcher2 is not in the official latest desire rom.
This does not have anything to do with T-mobile.
I have seen a lot of desire phone's and none of them have the launcher2.apk.
(at least on the dutch market that is )
why don't you just install it like I did. better still install helix launcher from the market. same as launcher2 but allows placement of 4 icons level with the draw which will appear on every page

I've tried launcher apk but it doesn't add the zooming animation that you get when you open an animation like on the nexus one. I really want that animation!
Hi there!
I've written a FAQ with Android tips & tricks and tweaks that I try to keep updated, and when I made an attempt to turn off HTC Sense on my Desire the other day in order to get the default Android homescreen, the old method didn't work.
Clearing the defaults for HTC Sense had no effect, and Home wasn't even listed in the application manager.
Is there another way? Perhaps Sense on Android 2.1 devices goes so deep that there isn't even a vanilla Android below it anymore?
Thanks
When you say "no longer possible" are you saying you were able to do this before? From what I know Launcher2, the default 2.1 app launcher, is not installed so you have to find the apk somewhere and install that first.
When the reviewers were first getting hold of Desire's I think there was a video of someone turning off Sense and running stock Android. It was a really simple process too, from what I remember.
When the phone was officially released people noticed you couldn't do this any more.
I think that's what the OP is referring to.
HTC removed the standard Home before they shipped the Desire, so it's never been possible on post-release handsets. It was an option on pre-release phones, though, so people got videos out showing how to do it, and then no dice...
You can install HelixLauncher 2 or 1, which will give you similar homes. I'm not sure if the regular Launcher2.apk will install - I seem to remember trying it and failing. Don't recall for sure, though.
not again lol....well this has been discussed before again and again, the retail version's sense ui cannot be turned off...
Well, it can if you install a different home replacement and clear Sense's defaults.
You can install Launcher2.apk you should be able to find it in some other threads
(use the search?). I had no problems installing it.
Then do the 'clear defaults' setting on the Sense UI application, press 'home' and it will ask you which home screen you want to use.
Better still, install the Helix Launcher 2 from the Market. I prefer it because of the ability to insert 4 static shortcuts alongside the menu button where the space was just previously wasted.
Hello friends!
I've just received my desire und would like to know if there's a way to uninstall
Or disable the HTC sense.
I really dislike the arced bottom with the apps, telephone and add buttons and would love to get rid of it all together.
I prefer the way Android looks on The galaxy I9000.
Can I make it happen?
Thanks ahead.

Super Fail of a thread...
Go check out the ROM section and you'll see plenty of non-Sense ROMs waiting for you

Thanks for the quick reply. I used custom roms over two years on my x1,
But for now I would like to modify my OS without flashing a Rom.
Plus I have no computer available at the time.
So no luck?
If you'd like to change the dock bar at the bottom, try installing LauncherPro. It'll run over the top of Sense so you'll lose the Sense widgets, but I think the paid version offers similar widgets. http://www.launcherpro.com/
You can use the process manager in the Astro File Manager to kill the HTC Sense process. The default android launcher should then appear on the phones "home" screen.
To get HTC Sense back, reboot your phone.

Why did you not buy a galaxy s or a nexus one if you don't like sense ui?

Well i like to choose. I thought getting rid of it is easier than adding it,
Plus this phone was cheaper for me.
As for the thread:
Using launcher pro really does it for me, so Thanks a lot.
You've helped much.
i think the "launcher pro" app is the easyest way to chance the style and its faster than sense
I have the stock evo htc sense rom installed, but it is rooted with revoked.
I would like to use launcher pro, i've purchased it, i've downloaded it, it says it is installed but it wont run. It's like the HTC launcher wont release it's clutches on it.
Any ideas?
Try going into settings, applications, manage apps, all, htc launcher, clear defaults. Then press home. Or dl home switcher from the market
We're comin from a pure power source.
Embarrassingly enough i figured it out. It was the fact that i was just dl the serial number for the paid version, not the actual app... sigh. LOL.
Hi,
I purchased my HTC Desire HD from Hong Kong and I emailed HTC to ask for the OTA update of Gingerbread 2.3 update. Sadly, they told me that its not available yet. Is there a way for me to get it?
Also, I am currently using Launcher Pro on my Desire HD, everytime I push the home button, it let me choose between Sense and Launcher Pro. How do I disable sense. My phone battery runs out in 5 hours these days after installing launcher pro. Help T_T
Why wait for HTC when u can alre get Gingerbread from many of the custom ROMs in this forum?
As for your 2nd question, each time it prompts u to choose between Sense & LauncherPro, there is a checkbox at the bottom part of that prompt which u can check. It says, "Use this as default option". U can use that to set it to use LauncherPro by default. And it won't prompt u again.

Which custom rom would you recommend me to use. I don't know how to install custom roms. Do I need to root my phone 1st.
As for the launcher pro question, I think the main problem now is. Launcher pro make my phone keep restarting by itself every 4 hours. I am also using Juice Defender. Do you think its the problem with my Juice Defenders settings or Launcher Pro.
Never had a problem with Launcher Pro, never used juice defender. I'd go with juice defender causing you trouble.
As for rooting, follow my Sig.
