I moved to an area where T-mobile and the N1 was not cutting it unfortunately. So the EVO was the first pick for me when it came down to switching carriers. I love how the phone looks and feels but I really don't like HTC Sense.
As of right now I don't really have plans on rooting my phone but I would really like to get rid of all the HTC stuff. I am using the stock launcher but I would like all the other HTC apps to go back to stock as well. Some of them are okay, but I just prefer the clean and simple look of the stock Android OS.
Can everything be removed through Settings: Applications: Manage Apps? And can I chose to go back to the HTC stuff if I ever felt like it?
i think that the best you're going to be able to do right now is to pull all the widgets off. you really can't just 'remove' sense ui. it's integrated pretty deeply.
i'm also off an n1, and there are a LOT of things i miss, dev wise. however, i do love the size of the screen (even tho it looks totally washed out and drab in comparison).
you'll be fine. just pull the widgets off. get a new launcher off the market, or a whole new home.
Thanks for the reply. I am interested in how you have your EVO at this time. Any suggestion on the launcher? Sense isn't bad... it's quick and does the job, but it just feels bloated and kinda cluttery for me.
I like how integrated it is with contacts and some other minor stuff even when using another launcher such as adw.launcher or launcherpro. I'll just have to build a custom rom for myself eventually when I gather more knowledge, and hope all goes well.
unfortunately you can't. sense isn't just bloated the apps crammed on the phone, but it's also hardcoded into parts of the operating system itself. you can change the launcher, but you can't ever have a fully vanilla android experience until one of the genius devs here creates a rom based on something like aosp. the good news is, when that happens, it's very likely froyo will be the basis for it.
i agree though, i love the clean, fast, simple, "real" android look over the busy, bloated, steampunk contraption that is the sense ui. i think it's stupid htc doesn't offer a plain android version, as plenty of people have no use for all the crap they force on us.
fortunately the evo handles all that overhead well, unlike the poor hero that was reduced to a crawl under the weight of it.
That's a real shame. You should definitely be given the option to use the standard Android OS. Oh well, I havent even had the phone 24 hours. I should get used to it. : )

yes it does I try not to look at my nexus one screen anymore because looking at it and then looking at the evo while I love the 4.3" the colors are so much richer and blacker on the nexus one. I am going to miss it once I sell it but I'm sure once I get use to the evo and don't have an nexus one to compare it to wont be so bad.
I too hate sense and can not wait for a froyo rom to be built once AOSP for 2.2 finally comes out.
you can just turn it off for now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTSXHJRLppU
How much for the N1?! lol
But I guess the best you can do is wait for an original 2.1 or 2.2 ROM to come out for the EVO.
After giving the phone a little more time, I am getting used to it. It's a good phone, I just wish all the HTC stuff was optional. I can just blast through anything on my N1, so it's hard to get used to. I got a nice quick sale on the Nexus, so at least thats a plus. : )
i would like to know which benefits i would get if i root my phone
why should i do it or why not
an if it makes sense, were can i find a howto
thx
Are you serious mate? Its a sticky at the absolute top in the Desire Android Development Forum. Maybe you browse around a bit next time (or use the search) before opening a new thread (about the 1 Mio'th one about this topic)...

Rooting gives you the ability to flash custom roms, these are generally built ontop of released or customized version of stock roms, this means you don't have to wait for a feature to be sent to your phone over the over the air upgrades, it also means you can customize your phone fully,I.e. custom icons down to the base level stuff like fonts and batery icons you can also use apps that require escalated permissions such as the terminal app and things like screenshots, cache cleaning.
Reasons not to root, warranty you loose it.
Bricking if you mess up you can potentially have a nice peice of plastic that does nothing.
Reliability the quality of custom roms has come along dramatically since the first rom but you are after all flashing some one else's project these roms are very well done and coded to a professional level but they simple do not nave the quality testing and reliability of the stock roms as these are often personal projects.
And guides on how to are frequent on here as are the reason to and not to root, look above.

so if i want to install a custom Android ROM (2.2 Froyo) with Sense i must root my phone...
and the other thing is, to remove some apps i don't need.... like stocks
but if i'm happy as it is there is no need?
well thx for the info
think I'll get to know my cell phone first then a little
almost have it for 3 weeks now =)
just to be able to load a rom without the sense and worth it!
Try launcher pro in the market and betterbut and I think you will be happy unless you want wireless tether and the other benefits, most sense users don't like the UI that's all.

the launcher of sense is not very bad.
the really bad are the internal apps: calendar, contacts...
i root and koad a non sense rom, and i have a nexus but without the hardware nexus bugs
Hi guys I'm new to android... coming from an iPhone. I just want to know why some people hate sense UI? I just had my Desire for 1 week so I don't have an idea why some people prefer stock android instead of the sense UI. For me I think the sense UI is nice. Can you guys enlighten me. TIA!
I think you will find that most Desire users like Sense, but in a "technical" community such as this you will find a reasonable proportion of people who prefer stock and/or other launchers.
Personally, I think Sense improves the Android user experience and that's a good thing. I had stock on my G1 (obviously), and got a Hero (which has Sense). If I'd wanted a stock experience, I would've bought a Nexus One over the Desire, but I think Sense is great and I prefer the Desires hardware anyway.

Dave

Welcome to Android. Nice to see you've broken the shackles of Apple.
I'm not sure why to be honest. Sense, in my opinion, makes the Android experience very smooth and feels nicely polished. There are more widgets, home screens etc...
I can only speculate that people like to be different and maybe feel that Sense somehow "weighs down" the phone with unnecessary baggage. At least on the older slower devices maybe.
Given that you can set the phone to launch the stock Android experience without Sense anyway, I'd say it's a mystery why anyone would be anti-Sense.
Those people do prefer life without it, I too would love to know your rationale.
Cheers,
HRH

Thanks for the welcome. I changed my phone to android cause the last three previous phone I had was iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3Gs and I just had it with Apple and their iTree . With all the limitation, the jailbreaking, the iTunes crap... and add all that to the new iPhone 4 antennagate problem and you feel like you just wanna kick the crap out Steve Jobs face. hehehehe
Anyway, I think maybe you guys are right... maybe It's because of some older HTC phones that are not quite on par with the Desire specs that makes their sense UI experience a little bit problematic. I've been playing with my Desire since I got it non-stop (except when I'm at work of course) and I like the sense UI very much with all those additional widget and additional option from HTC. I don't see any lagging or any problematic situation caused by the UI itself... and it's because of the powerful specs of the Desire itself.
Well, if anybody else has a better idea on why... based on their experience and all. Give us some feedback.
Cheers guys!
Oh and by the way, I'm loving my new HTC Desire... I just wish the rumored HTC Desire HD is available already cause I wanted to get a bigger screen for browsing. But the Desire now is amazing... what more when the new Desire HD is available. But what the heck... as Steve Jobs said "No one is going to buy those big screen" right? (sarcasm). hehehehe
I've been running meXdroid for the last few revisions, and although I'm more than satisfied with the speed of the rom and the overall look, the animations were changed in the last couple of versions - petty as it may seem, I just don't like them.
So I thought now might be a good time to check out another rom. I thought I'd give a couple of Sense roms a go, but I tried Senseless Romeo and that made my phone run like a bag of spanners, even OC'd to 1.2ghz.
I'm now just about to flash Insertcoin Sense Vision Sense rom, but I have a funny feeling that now I've been too spoiled performance-wise to keep using a Sense rom. This is despite how great they look (the new Sense 3.0 features look sweet).
With this in mind, can anyone suggest a 100% fully working, stable, fast fast fast CM-based rom? I'm not interested in CM nightlies as I don't have time for constant flashing/reflashing/fault-finding. Speed is of the essence!
Thanks guys/gals
EDIT: Question 2, for bonus points:
I'm also getting hacked off with ADW which keeps falling out of ram and failing to load widgets. ADW EX is even worse. The killer feature of ADW/EX is the ability to lock desktop.
Any other launchers provide this these days? I'm also thinking about forgoing my custom launcher shortcuts and going with the stock GB launcher as it's so much smooooother.
So - any recommendations for a launcher, maybe something new is out I don't know about?

I did look at SuperCM7, as I have fond memories of HTCClay's roms on my G1 - but from the few posts I read at the end of the thread it looks like it isn't being developed/supported any more? Is that right? I may well give it a go anyway...
I've been using this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989691 and really like it. I came from meXdroid too, and it was great but it sucked the life out of my battery. This rom I'm on now has great battery life, is fast, and looks great. The font is a bit different, but I really like it, others may not though.
after a few days i dont like how the syncing is handled, im getting a bit tired of the whole ui in general. it's just not pleasant anymore. I even tried to switch launchers to nova. Then realized how much better ics stock would be on this. Then nova decided to force close on me so its unusable on the one x. man these roms cant come quick enough, ditching sense asap. Anyone else feel sense gets real old really fast? Don't get me wrong i love the phone, and the screen really has me in awe. Just tired of sense and want a more stock experience.
I've got the one x after a year of using a Wildfire. I don't have any problems with sense 4.0
I actually like Sense 4, its more pleasing to use than vanilla ICS in my opinion but still keeps the best parts of the plain ICS theme.
At the end of the day, if you don't use the Sense widgets everything else is pretty much the same as stock to look at. The app drawer even flows the same way.
But messaging and other parts look better.

I love to see constructive titles
Hey guys,
I recently flashed between ARHD and LeeDroiD, both already fantastic ROMs, considering the Device just launched. Great respect for that dedication and support!
Tho, it seems both ROMs offer a No-Sense installation, or its possible.
AFAIK, Sense UI 4.0 still is pretty buggy. Memory Management is fuxort and causes Rosie Reboots every now and then. Plus, it seems like Sense / Rosie is causing the Phone to slow down a tad. When I use Trebuchet or Apex Launcher, Screen scrolling is WONDERFULLY smooth. Noticeably smoother than on my previous devices (Desire HD, Galaxy S2 i9100).
Question is: Even tho I always loved Sense UI, does removing Sense / Rosie speed up the phone in general? I would be perfectly fine with Apex or Trebuchet, as they run absolutely smooth so far, even with quite some widgets.
Thing is: I noticed alot of games acting up after a while, little lags every now and then, most likely a sign of cleaning up memory in the background to get the active App (in this case the game) more spare Memory to fill up. Sense UI and its Widgets seem to consume quite alot Memory, and because of the bugged memory management, it starts to lag more and more. After quitting the game, Rosie usually reboots.
I love Sense, always have, missed it alot after switching to the Galaxy S2 back in the days, but to speed up the phone and get rid of occasional lags, I would sacrifice Sense for the time being (until a new Firmware fixes issues).
I am still running Sense 4.0, but before I flash again, I would like to have your opinion and maybe experience with this matter.
Thanks guys!
You can use my ROM in pair with ROM cleaner and Nova Launcher

Guys, you 2 got GREAT ROMs running. Still flashing between them
I will try both Non-Sense'd ROMs. Sense really seems effin memory hungy. Hopefully it speeds things up for now
And you 2 keep the goodies commin'!

Hey,
This looks like a good place to ask this question ....
How are the Widgets in Sense 4.0 compare to Sense 3.x in quantity & options ?
Thank you in advance,
Itai.

I am currently trying No-Sense. The phone feels faster, indeed. Better response, apps start a little faster, haven't had a Launcher Reboot ever since (but I am using Apex instead of Nova as for now).
Too bad the Lockscreen-Shortcuts are gone, but thats normal since there's no HTC Sense Launcher anymore (Dock-Icons).

LOL, Lee's sense stripper
I am absolutely astonished now much work some ppl put in sense. I wouldn't waste a second on this launcher as it's just way too bloated (and 4.0 should be stripped ), lags on my 4-core phone, isn't able to scroll a live wallpaper smoothly and so on. Especially with launchers like Apex out there, lightweight and very fast plus customizable, I just don't get it.
Anyhow, we need a good camera alternative asap so we can go AOSP...
Sweeeeet, will try this as soon as I get my new unit.
Does anybod know if the camera UI is gone too or not?

Maybe some people like the consistent look and feel, and the at-a-glance information that the Sense widgets give them. People like me.
Lags? That depends on your perception. I don't have a problem with waiting 0.5ms to flip between one screen and the next. Maybe I'm just a patient person!!!!!!!!!
The only thing i ll miss (as i m considering using AOSP launcher, never been fan of sense) is the HTC music widget, notes widget and calendar widget. I ve been HTC fan for some years now and always been going AOSP as soon as i get the device I always missed those widgets from HTC

After every RAM intensive app whenever I went back "home" I was greeted by a "loading" screen and I had to wait several secs to bring rosie back to life, never happened to me with Apex.
Having to stare at a loading text on a brand new quad core phone just to load the launcher is a bit embarrassing, don't you think?

I don't like the calendar widget at all - I use a combination of simple calendar widget and business calendars week view, gives me more info over the next few days than a bunch of dots
As for notes I use catch, but there is one very good post it style note app out there but thats not the way I am using notes on my phone and my player of choice, PowerAmp has several nice widgets, so this is also not something I would miss.
What I like and would really miss are the camera app obviously, the tasks widget (for the ability to sync with G and exchange) and the mail app which is really nice. The AOSP is nice too though, so its acutally onle the camera app that will prevent me from going AOSP.
Most probably I am going to try this ROM, AOSP themed sense ROM, once the unlock before answering a call bug is squashed.

Great post...
I came from HD2, best fkin phone ever, and got HOX, the next best fkin phone ever, so don't you tell me to go get an iPhone! This is about the biggest insult you can make here on xda, shame on you!
I bother with htc phones because I used to have a HD2, a diamond before and a 3300 even before that. They were all very well built and had some good hw specs. Back in the wm days, sense was a revelation and on my HD2 I could flash whatever I want, but I was shocked when I tried sense. Now on my HOX, I learned to h8 it once again. If it wasn't for the camera app, I'd be long gone. It's a real shame that the HOX has such a great cam with all those great features that can only be used together with the rest of sense. These ugly icons are so outdated, have a look at AOSP to get a feel what a menu should look like nowadays.
I never liked Samsung, the GSII had something cheap when you had it in your hand, nothing as solid and nice like htc. And I h8 them for trying to copy fkin apple, wth would want that anyway. I h8 this carrier / manufacturer customizing crap, most of the bases are flat out rubbish and only delay the updates of optimzations to the phone and make it unusable. My gf wanted to get rid of her defy, I rooted it and flashed CM7. She was absolutely amazed and at the same time upset/confused, htf a company could fk up their own product so badly! These guys should try to keep themselves apart with hw and design choices, not with bloat ware and stupid overlays.
And last but not least, I buy a phone because of the hw, not the sw, especially if the sw is or should be open source!
What better is there than a community working on the android base (CM / AOKP)?
I h8 the idea of now being forced to wait for a company to bring out new updates to my system, I really do...
