Quick help pls - app to auto-forward sms? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys n gals
I'm looking for an app which will automatically forward sms (and mms, if poss) to a different phone number?
Currently testing out a sim with a new service provider, and want to use it in my Desire to check signal/data coverage everywhere I go. However I don't want to carry a second phone with my old sim in it, just so I can receive calls and sms from people. Don't want to give out the new number to people yet, until I'm sure I'm changing over.
Of course I can set up the 2nd phone to forward calls via my network, but can this be done somehow with sms?
Thanks!

Why don't you just transfer your old number to your new sim?

I will, once I'm satisfied with the new service provider's data coverage/network etc. I'm just testing at the moment.
Since posting I've found an app on the Market which is called, funnily enough, SMS Forwarder which works for sms. So problem solved!

ok when i send a txt msg on my t-mobile phone my msg's for example display like this
Me: Hey Matt how are you
Matt: Good you
etc
I have a pic stored in Matt's profile so when he msgs me there is a little square pic of him next to his name. Now what I cannot figure out is next to my name is a grey stock android pic and i cannot figure out how to change it.
Now i do not have facebook and nothing other then gmail is linked to my account. Funny thing is when i txt msg myself the msg comes out like this
Me:Test
Jason:Test (thats my name)
now my gmail profile pic shows beside my name when i send to myself but I never get a pic for my sent msg.
thanks
It sounds like you have set yourself up as a contact already, so you might want to check if your phone number shows up properly in your settings (About Phone->Settings). If the number is unknown, that would explain the gray box.
Are you running a custom ROM? If using CM6, enter your phone number manually at Settings->Call settings->Additional settings->My phone number (you'll have to do this on every boot most likely). If you are on stock ROM, you may want to give T-Mobile a call and ask them to push your phone number to your SIM card (they can do this over the air). Not sure about with other ROMs.
Checked my settings and my phone number does shows up as unknown...and I have myself saved as a contact. I am not running a custom rom yet but I am permarooted and all unlocked/off'd.

How do I fix the phone number unknown?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
If your not running a custom ROM then it is most likely your SIM card. Your phone number can't be read from the SIM card, you can ask you carrier to push the number or get a replacement SIM card or if you have access to an old Sony Ericsson then you can edit the number on that phone
I know a few of the custom ROM's have problems reading the SIM card but if your not rooted then it can only be your SIM card.
Hope this helps & don't forget to say thanks!

[Q] SMS to MMS Fix

Firstly, I would like to pay respect to the developers who mapped the hardware button for the camera app. Respect to you all. Starting this thread hoping those same geniuses would be able to solve this problem. Android generally has this crazy notion that if i want to send a long sms, it will be cheaper for me to send an mms. I get like unlimited sms but i gotta pay for each mms i send so everytime i need to send a long sms, it costs me money. plus, if the recipient does not have mms configured, its money lost from my side and nothing recieved on theirs. so is there any way to stop the native messaging app from converting sms to mms after 3 sms length.
currently using Handcent sms for long sms but its a pain and it crashes often.

uhm.
why would a long sms convert to a mms?
I've never seen this happen.
Have no idea why this happens. if i use "MyPhoneExplorer" to compose sms on pc and send them, this problem doesn't occur. tonight, i decided to send a long sms directly from my phone and i saw that it converts to mms. so decided to google it and it appears Xplay isn't the only phone with this problem. a quick browse on google shows that loads of device owners are frustrated by this. check it out on your stock device as mine is stock also. just bootloader unlocked and rooted ;-)
Yea, mine does the same, bootloader locked, and does it un-rooted and rooted.
Very annoying. You'd think sony ericsson would have made this an option.
But i did have this issue with 2.1 on my motorola milestone.
mine just gives me a notification saying it will send 2 SMS, it even counts down hoow many characters i have left until it adds another SMS to it (only when below 20 character left)

Its after lyk 4 or 5 sms's it turns it into a mms, i can confirm every android phone i have had (hero, desire, desire hd and xplay) have all done this, i resorted to sending half an sms then writing the other half n sending that lol

I just tested mine to 5 sms. All it does it countdown how many characters I have left for each sms, and then adds another sms.
Converting into an mms sounds like a cheap trick to make more money by some carriers.
I am with Vodafone Uk and they don't use this trick yet it seems, although thanks for this post because now I will be keeping an eye out for this.
Still don't see it as much of a problem though. Just send one sms at a time?
Happens often here (when going into 4th txt), I just break messages down not to get stung with a MMS charge.
It can be annoying as when breaking the message down you can get a reply from the other side before they have read the full message, which can cause confusion.

Try expressing your feelings to your GF one message at a time...
Have you tried writing the whole message, copy/cutting half of it, sending half then quickly pasting and sending the rest? Or email/call the person lol? It might just be me but my texts are pretty small.

Well the solution is to go with a network provider that doesn't adopt this cheap tactic.
Alternatively, telephone them and threaten legal action with demand for all lost money sent on mms.
Changing an sms into an mms can not possibly be legal.

It's not something the network controls, its a Android thing.
I guess it make sense to people in the states and how most contracts work over there.
It is annoying though.

Why does my Xperia Play not do it then?
What makes mine different, other than the network providers own software?
It has to be a network provider setup?
I can't imagine an android stock rom ever having this feature.

Your welcome for the camera XD It can now be found if you click the little android market logo at the top of the xperia play game menu when you slide the keypad out.
Back on-topic, I just successfully send a 6 sms long message, on 2.3.2 and with Three

Ok just to make a few things clear. I noticed this problem on my Xplay which has a stock rom 2.3.2 and i got it sim-free. i have tried it with several different vendors, like vodafone UK, 3, O2 and international vendors in Pakistan as well. Also, i've tried composing a message with no sim in it and still have the same problem. So its a problem with the OS and not network related. Saw the same problem on a stock Galaxy S Sim-free.
So Devs, please find a solution to this if possible.

how can it be network providers?
I got my handset SIM free (generic UK rom) and have used a few networks. it does it on all of them. and reports of it being the same on other Android devices.
It is nothing to do with networks, it Android OS.

Receiving blank MMS from iPhone users.

Hi,
My Desire HD has this issue when I receive an MMS msg from a user with an iPhone.
I can a receive the mms fine but when I attempt to open the attachment, I get a blank page.
This only happens with mms msgs from iPhone. I'm able to open msgs from other phones just fine.
I'm running Android 2.3.3 with Android Revolution HD 5.1.7 ROM.
I've tried googling this problem & have found many other users with the same issue but no solution so far..
Anybody know of a solution? Should I try flashing to the latest version of Revolution HD?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The answer, my friend, is never buy an iPhone. I'm surprised they can send anything.
Jokes aside. I can't see how it matters what phone the mms is sent from. Whatever phone sends it, its data all compressed or whatever the same way. So. The problem may lie in the type of data being sent.
Have you tried to receive different types of data and maybe a few different photos?
I have experienced receiving mms problems myself. Only ever resolved when I changed rom hope this helps.

I can only assume that, difficult as this may be to believe, the iphone MMS is in some kind of no standard format. My advice would be to suggest that your iphone owning mate either get an app that allows him to send them with a standard format (whatsapp would allow him to send them purely as data) or to buy a proper phone.

Texting issue....

Hi is anyone else here have issues receiveing text messages in foreign countries? I'm in the military and currently stationed overseas South Korea.
I am able to receive messages from some but not all. The ones I am not able to receive messages from instead of getting the actual message I get "Message format not supported."
The only difference I noticed from the various users are that smartphone users work and old style flip phone dont work.
Sent from my HTC One X
They might be actually sending you MMS in a format that is not supported by the receiving phone. Works mostly when new vs old phones send each other stuff. If it's just text message, I fail to see how it's different though, unless it contains characters that the receiving phone cannot display.
Say if my phone is not able to display it how and where would I get the necessary software to display it? I've searching Google Play but nothing that actually installs the language packs onto the phone all side apps.
I've tried talking to HTC customer support they replied stating that the One X currently doesn't support all languages in Asia. Now if that were to be true what would be an work around? A global phone not having global support like seriously... My Nexus is way better then this phone.
Any suggestions? I'm currently stationed in South Korea not being able to receive text messages on my phone will partly render this phone obsolete.

Bump does anyone has an work around?

when my phone arrived, it did not have american english as an option. i downloaded an app from the play store called morelocale2. maybe that will help?
I just installed the morelocale2 switched it to Korean had them send me a text this time it just showed format not supported in Korean. I believe this rules out as not the software side. Perhaps that or morelocale2 doesn't fully switch the phones display and only the system language.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
there are some other locale type apps on the market. and there is the possibility to select korean for the keyboard on mine. so it might be worth checking around more.
one other issue mentioned elsewhere is message size. you can choose a size up to 300k in the message app supplied with the phone. possibly another message app would enable larger messages.
there's a korean version of handcent sms. handcent is, though garnering some criticism for the way it functions on the one x.
I currently have the maximum message size set to 300 already by default. I've also tried handcent, and pro sms. Installed both the Korean plugins for both app insteadof getting message not supported I get a blank space, as if someone sent me a text message with spaces no text.
The space isn't the full length of the message it only has about roughly 3-6 spaces worth.
I also installed the Google Korean IME I can type in Korean now but still no luck with text.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
if you've signed up for a handcent account and done everything else, you may have to try the korean service sms app or contact htc to tell them the difficulty you're having using the regular app. let us know how it works out. by the way, does your service provider in korea have it's own app? they may be able to help with tweaking to some extent.
I've contacted HTC support already they just site t ne to google play to install some third part program telling me they are allowed to endorse other products so I have to search around myself.
As for contacting my service provider I have not done so yet will be next on the list. My current service provider is "olleh kt"
It shouldn't be the provider though because my Nexus S works just fine send and receive no issues. It also supported every language unlike the One X such a let down.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
can't say i know how to do it, but maybe you can port over the sms/mms software on your nexus. some owners in the states are having to tweak apks and so forth to get at&t voicemail, for example. hopefully there's a fix for you, too.
It seems its the service provider issue at first I had assumed it was cause the old phone to new phone problem. Now I just realized its the provider can't receiveanything outsideof my provider going to talk to the manager later.

Sounds hopeful.

Can you text? Can you text yourself? Have you rebooted the phone? What signal strength does the phone have? I have had no problems with mine on T-Mobile. Phone service is mostly a a matter of the Cell Tower recognizing your SIM card. Might need to open a support call with T-Mobile.

I can ring out fine and i can receive calls fine on another handset with that sim card.
Any help would be great.

I know that I'm replying on over a year old thread, but I'd like to thank you. You helped me to figure out exactly the same issue I was facing. And want to add that you don't have to uninstall the AVL, just disable call blocking feature in its settings. This worked for me.
