Had this issue on windows mobile and now have the same problem on this device. When i get an mms they come through only a 1/5 the size of the screen. On windows there was a reg key that i can change, anyone know how to do it on this device?
Thanks
UPDATE
Now that the desire has been rooted, anybody know what settings need to be changed in order to correct the tiny mms pictures, o2 still have not got there finger out and sorted this issue out ??
I have found an app on the market place called handcent and isntalled this, looks like the iphone layout. there is an option to spoof user agent but when i do this i cannot send any mms's. Can receive them but still they are not fullsize although bigger than previous. will try another option and choose the iphone 3.0 useragent. Phones on charge at present as battery ran out after only half a days use. I was using it a lot as i was setting it up so cant really say if this is the norm yet.
Still dont think this is as nippy as my HD2 but then I had a custom rom on that so that helped loads from the stock rom. Again early days.
Im getting this issue.
Isthere any work around for it yet? I send/recieve alot of pics and hate that they are tiny.
the only solution i have found is for rooted devices so no good at present.
Ta. Will have to wait then !!!
Ive gone back to messaging + smspopup only losing ability to quick compose using search button.
Ta
It might me because O2 have not yet added the Desire to their approved database yet. Try again when O2 have released the Desire on their network at the end of this month. I'm also on O2 but I hardly ever use MMS.
Good shout. Makes sense. Ta for that.

Ah, hang on, so how come the native messaging app shows the message in the correct size ?
For the same message, same picture sent or received, in the native app is large, but when i quit and go into Handcent, its small !!!
Handcent has just had an update and its still showing as tiny.
Anyone else got this issue ??
You cannot do anything to sort this, it is solely down to o2 to pull there finger out. Until they do we are stuck with it.
According to there site they will have the desire at the end of this month.
But i get large photos sent and received with the native MMS app, and have worked out that its because it converts it to a slideshow.
Spose i will wait til O2 get this as a phone and try after.
Ta
anyway to stop this slideshow on desire, can't seem to find anything to turn it off so I can just view the picture normally.

(edited first post as well)
In handcent sms in Maximum MMS Size, change from default to 300KB.
Default is 300k.
I've tried all sides and none work. Need to wait tool o2 release the desire for themselves.
I have this problem with mine and i'm on orange. When the image is converted to be able to be sent, it shrinks it to about 16K, which is really pathetic. Anyone figured this out yet?

Are you using the native app or Handcent/chomp ??
Rooted mine and now using handcent, all working as it should, i used to get the same on o2. Not anymore though. Full size mms now.

So can you post your settings?
I assume you are still on o2?
I can send large mms via the native app, and cant send anything if selecting one from the gallery, but can if using the camera straight from hand cent.

I have the standard setup, so 2 accounts, one called "O2 MOBILE WEB" which only has the apn set to mobile.o2.co.uk nothing in proxy/port/server/mmsc etc. Only username and password set.
The other one is called O2 MMS Postpay, this has apn of wap.o2.co.uk, no proxy / no port, username o2wap / password, server not set, mmsc set to http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002, proxy 193.113.200.195, mmsport 8080
The strange thing is that i CANNOT send mms messages with the stock messaging app. I can however receive them and they come in full size. In handcent i can send and receive mms messages fine. Not sure why this is.
I would prefer the stock application to do both but just cant work out why it doesnt send. tried so many different settings now but nothing works
Just been speaking to a guy from work who in the same situation as me, hes on orange, im on t-mobile, and basically, about 1 in every 10 messages sent, doesnt send, or some send twice etc...
Iv just installed a new rom and rooted, and if anything my issues are getting worse.
As i text a lot, this is rather annoying and i now it not just me!
So question is , is it a software issue or hardware?
and can it be fixed, or helped?
many of my messages are only sent half since i have my desire.....
I get the same. I kinda thought it was because I flashed with a stock ROM instead of the Orange one but when HTC sent back from repair with the Orange ROM it did the same bloody thing!
It only happens when I text Vodafone or O2. Orange, Virgin, 3 etc. are fine.
To be honest I think it's a network issue. Either that or your phone is in a weak 3g area, and as you are sending the text, it is changing from hsdpa, to 3g etc. That might cause it to double send, or fail.
Try setting it to 2g only and test it.

Yeah he's rite its prob ur signal, i get it when im on one bar hsdpa rather than, 4 bar gprs lol also data affects txt msgs, it sometimes happens when my fone is sending or receving data
if its signal why does it happen on my tmobile phone, and my friends orange phone???
I turn 3g off most of the time, makes no difference , still messes up.
Both networks share the same masts don't they? If you are both in the same office and connected to the same mast that would explain it. Also this thread only has people complaining from tmob, and orange. I'd say that is a pointer. I'm on O2 and have never had this problem. I also don't remember seeing any other threads on the same issue.
I'm by no means saying this isn't an issue for you, but I'd be looking more at the network than the handset. Have you rang Tmob and asked them what might be up?
For me, this issue is related to spesific contacts. When I text some of my contacts, I always get an error message. I have reentered their number in phonebook, but it does not help.
This is rather annoying, as one of the contacts is my wife...

Not a network issue. It also happens on Vodafone. I don't have so many messagee broken as you to but one out of eight is not sent. I think it desires problem.

Yep same on my unlocked unbranded desire on 3 uk getting pissed off with it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Im on orange generic non-branded phone with bog standard Sence ROM, I noticed I get this and as I have notice will all phones it only tends to happen if im sending a text at the same time I receive it, Of course actually getting it to resend is a bugger! and normally requires a battery pull, Im used to it these days but
Has anyone who is having problems tried a different messaging application, e.g Handcent?
Regards,
Dave
I've posted all of this before and there are loads of threads on this topic already
If you uninstall chomp/handcent (or any third party messaging app - even the HTC sense one) and use 'messages' instead this problem goes away.
Like you, I would get send failed/multiple messages received quite often, but since using the default app i've now sent 1, 127 messages without 1 problem I used to get this all of the time and this is what has cured it for me
1) uninstall any messaging software you have downloaded from the market
2) download sms unread count and sms popup from the market
3) put the sms unread count widget on the homescreen
4) configure sms popup to your liking
5) send messages to your heart's content
This uses the default 'messages' app rather than anything else and works perfectly
For me this happened continually, regardless of if the phone had just been hard reset and only had the stock message app.
In my case it was an issue with a local mast and the switching between WCDMA and GSM signal.
The issue went, as some other people have said, when I switched the phone to GSM only - keep in mind just turning Mobile data OFF isn't the same thing, you must go into settings and select 'GSM only'.
Give it a try and see if the issue remains.
There does seem to be several causes for the same issue so what works for me / someone else may not work for everyone

This was part of my problem too as my signal at home constantly moves between 3G and E, however, the method I posted above has fixed this too

Same issue for me one contact can sms me but every time i try to reply it fails other contacts seem to work just fine.
Sorry but how do you uninstall the sense messaging app?
This is defiantly a problem with the desire not network. I've never had this problem before with any of my phones. but since got the desire it happens a lot. it seems to be when I try to send multiple texts very quickly. plz stop blaming the network it didn't happen when I had an iPhone so how do you explain that.
I also have an issue sending multiple sms. My Desire is on Vodafone, unrooted.
Whether I use the default messaging app or Chompsms, if I try to send a message to multiple people it immediately fails to most of the recipients.
The phone will give me repeated warnings (vibration/failed msg reports) again and again, until it has managed to send the sms to all recipients. It will generally complete the request eventually, but in the process it's thrashing my battery down as I have to keep checking if the new notification is a warning or in fact an sms that I have received from someone else.
This behaviour is absolutely AWFUL, and although I used to forward on jokes that I received to a list of about 20 people several times a day, I just cannot do it any more. The same action using the same sim in my old Dream completes fine without a hiccup.
how do you uninstall the htc sense messaging app?
do you just mount /system and remove the Mms.apk from the App folder?
will this still mean that the default messaging app is not removed?
Am I missing something? I can't figure out how to get my G2 to send a regular picture message, It sends and recieves pictures as a slide show for me. Sending a picture from the G2 to a G1, the G1 gets it as a picture message even though it shows up on my phone as a slide show.
Try sending one from yourself. A bunch of the guys I work worth like to forward nsfw pics around all day and if someone who didn't have a smart phone sent it to me it was a slide show, if someone had a smart phone, etc, I got it the right way.

It's a bug. Tmobile is very aware of it. There are some 3rd party free apps in the marketplace that will fix the issue.

chompsms, I think. I don't have android right now but I read up on the topic. Here's a link.

Yeah. i use handcent. its lightyears better than stock app and has quick reply and quick compose features. ALso no stupid slideshow mode.
thats what i use
Sorry to bring up a dead topic but just wondering if a fix was ever found? I've flashed a new ROM & its having this problem.
I really don't know of any 'fix' for this. Not to mention the fact that the best OS out the can't seem to send a proper mms and not compress it to less than 10kb. No amount of UA spoofing or alternate messaging apps will fix any of this until google addresses the issue. Maybe some one smarter than I can sort through the phones code and find the culprit, then remove it.

Yes, but how about sending? The custom UA doesn't fix that issue, any mms you send will compress to a wicked small file. I've even resized the image to 600Kb and even 300Kb, both were reduced to a measly 6Kb and 8Kb (same with my MT Slide when I used it).
Btw, UA = User Agent.
It's the ID of each model of phone that the network servers use to determine certain features, like mms. When you send an mms it sends messages to the server stating 'message incoming/phone UA' the server then sends back an ok - the message is sent, server sends a receipt.
When a message is sent to you the server sends an invisible text stating 'message waiting/message address/what's your UA ID' the phone then confirms the UA ID. The server then reads the UA and adjusts the message accordingly and says the message is ready, phone then downloads it and sends receipt.
Very long (but quick) process. So yes, changing the UA will help with receiving an mms but the phone, at least in Androids case, is the reason why we can't send a large mms. Since all messaging apps like handcent still rely on the core process used by Android to send messages - there's no way to bypass it completely. You can trick it into sending a 300Kb picture as long as the original size isn't much larger but good luck on 600Kb - 1MB or more, they get downsized to nothing.
Firstly, I would like to pay respect to the developers who mapped the hardware button for the camera app. Respect to you all. Starting this thread hoping those same geniuses would be able to solve this problem. Android generally has this crazy notion that if i want to send a long sms, it will be cheaper for me to send an mms. I get like unlimited sms but i gotta pay for each mms i send so everytime i need to send a long sms, it costs me money. plus, if the recipient does not have mms configured, its money lost from my side and nothing recieved on theirs. so is there any way to stop the native messaging app from converting sms to mms after 3 sms length.
currently using Handcent sms for long sms but its a pain and it crashes often.

uhm.
why would a long sms convert to a mms?
I've never seen this happen.
Have no idea why this happens. if i use "MyPhoneExplorer" to compose sms on pc and send them, this problem doesn't occur. tonight, i decided to send a long sms directly from my phone and i saw that it converts to mms. so decided to google it and it appears Xplay isn't the only phone with this problem. a quick browse on google shows that loads of device owners are frustrated by this. check it out on your stock device as mine is stock also. just bootloader unlocked and rooted ;-)
Yea, mine does the same, bootloader locked, and does it un-rooted and rooted.
Very annoying. You'd think sony ericsson would have made this an option.
But i did have this issue with 2.1 on my motorola milestone.
mine just gives me a notification saying it will send 2 SMS, it even counts down hoow many characters i have left until it adds another SMS to it (only when below 20 character left)

Its after lyk 4 or 5 sms's it turns it into a mms, i can confirm every android phone i have had (hero, desire, desire hd and xplay) have all done this, i resorted to sending half an sms then writing the other half n sending that lol

I just tested mine to 5 sms. All it does it countdown how many characters I have left for each sms, and then adds another sms.
Converting into an mms sounds like a cheap trick to make more money by some carriers.
I am with Vodafone Uk and they don't use this trick yet it seems, although thanks for this post because now I will be keeping an eye out for this.
Still don't see it as much of a problem though. Just send one sms at a time?
Happens often here (when going into 4th txt), I just break messages down not to get stung with a MMS charge.
It can be annoying as when breaking the message down you can get a reply from the other side before they have read the full message, which can cause confusion.

Well the solution is to go with a network provider that doesn't adopt this cheap tactic.
Alternatively, telephone them and threaten legal action with demand for all lost money sent on mms.
Changing an sms into an mms can not possibly be legal.

Ok just to make a few things clear. I noticed this problem on my Xplay which has a stock rom 2.3.2 and i got it sim-free. i have tried it with several different vendors, like vodafone UK, 3, O2 and international vendors in Pakistan as well. Also, i've tried composing a message with no sim in it and still have the same problem. So its a problem with the OS and not network related. Saw the same problem on a stock Galaxy S Sim-free.
So Devs, please find a solution to this if possible.

I got my handset SIM free (generic UK rom) and have used a few networks. it does it on all of them. and reports of it being the same on other Android devices.
It is nothing to do with networks, it Android OS.
I originally ordered and used the S8+ on T-Mobile. I wasn't happy with the service, returned the device after using it for a week and a half and went back to Verizon and i'm noticing differences between the 2 different carrier phone model (which i expected to see).
The S8+ on T-Mobile allowed me send SMS messages (using the native Samsung Message app) that were as long as i wanted and they did not get broken up. On my new Verizon S8+ all incoming and outgoing messages are cut up and sent individually. On the T-Mobile version, there were settings in the Message app to change the different SMS settings and coding and that are missing on the Verizon model. I even enabled and used the terrible Verizon Messages app to see if i could make changes there, but there were no options there either.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed, or better yet, if it CAN be fixed? It's kind of frustrating. And Google provided no help except threads like this that were started and never completed with an answer.

That sucks. I know that SMS and MMS can be tricky. May have something to do with carriers. I have had to mess around with using different ones in different situations. I was using Chomp for a while with good results, but had to swap to Textra which has been doing well for me for my last 2 phones. Using Verizon on Verizon.

I am not having that issue. When someone send me a long message, it actually turn into an mms and I'm seeing it as 1 long message.
I also don't like the Verizon app, I want to use the native app. My native app works but the latest update wakes the screen on incoming SMS every single time no way to shut off. Very annoying, stuck using Verizon app for now as well. Have posted a thread here about that https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/screen-wake-incoming-sms-verizon-s8-t3594258 Also have opened a ticket with Samsung about that issued and Verizon community. Will see if it gets fixed with OTA patch. I have seen this before on beta builds on S7 edge, very annoying.
Also noticed they locked out the engineering menu, I mean come on Verizon. While I like the network way way way better than Sprint, this thing is locked and locked again.
I have been using the Android Messages app for a couple months now on my HTC M9. Just got this S8+ about a week ago. Hate the Samsung messages app. No individualized options for each person. The Verizon SMS app... well, it's the Verizon app, enough said. I have really liked the Android Messages on this now. No problems with sending short or long texts, or sending media. Seems to work the best out of all i've seen with the most options or features.
Does anyone know if Verizon killed RCS messaging features in the stock Samsung messages app? I'm not getting read receipts, typing notifications etc

I don't think Verizon supports RCS messaging, last i read they had no plans to implement it. Also, i don't remember Samsung having support for it either. I could be wrong, but that's what i remember.

Those options only work in the Verizon messaging app, it may only be limited to others also using the Verizon messaging app to message you, maybe someone can test it to verify. But I can indeed verify typing notifications and read receipts do working in the Verizon messaging app.
What's crazy is the other carriers support RCS messaging.... Like tmobile

AT&T does as well, but it's limited to within the carrier. Same for T-Mobile. And Verizon has it in their Messages+ app (which sucks).
