epson vs nova screen. differences? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been reading that there are two different screens being used. One from epson, and one from nova. What are the differences between these screens. Are they both still 16 bit? Is the brightness different? Any other differences?
Is there any way to tell which screen you are getting before you buy? Are evo's still being made with both screens?

Not sure anyone knows the answers to those questions. I have a revision 0003 with a nova screen, and before this fps fix business came up I was happy with the look. The touch input lag concerns me more than the 30 fps thing right now.

how do you check your hardware revision?

Go to settings -> About phone -> Hardware Information, under Hardware Version
0002 = Novatel
0003 = Could be either, you have to run and pipe some log to find out which one you have.

Too bad. The touch lag and 16 bit screen are what are making me lean towards the galaxy s right now. I'm waiting to see if either the htc evo gets better by the time the galaxy comes to sprint (in some form) or the galaxy shows up with big problems making the evo relatively better. Hopefully the epson screen will fix at least the lag. 18 bits would put me over the edge.

I have a 002, im very curious on what the differences on the screen's are.

Nobody really knows except for the epson 30fps limit has been fixed and the novak not.
People are reporting the novak has a purplish tint to it. the side by side pic it looks pretty obvious but YMMV..
the biggest issue I have with the whole thing is from the users who have applied the 30fps fix they all say input lag is gone and its very noticeable!
Maybe at some point the issue will be fixed for the EVO's with novak screens but I'm not sure I am willing to bet being locked into a phone and carrier for 2 years.

There is still a week and a half to exchange your phone. Do you know how LONG that is in XDA-time? We have had our phones for 2 and a half weeks (granted we had root before release but still) and look at what all has been accomplished.
Personally I reloaded my sense (on a 002 nova) and I found my color to be in between the two (not as "purple" as the first and not as "black" as the second). I got caught up in the "purple vs true black" debate, but I'm finding that it really isn't as much of an issue to me.

Everyone keeps saying this but I don't think it's true. You have a week and half to RETURN the phone (assuming you bought on launch day). You have nearly a year to exchange the phone for any kind of defect because of the warranty.

I believe after the 30 days you get a refurbished phone whereas if you do it within the 30 days you can get a brand new replacement. YMMV, but I know with the relationship I have with my Sprint store theres a good chance I could get a brand new replacement even after my 30 days...

For those of you who are interested, here is a picture of novatec vs epson. I happened to get a 002 with novatec and my brother got a 003 with epson. The left one is mine and the right one is his. These phones were taken in the dark with the same screen brightness and same wallpaper. You can see that with the novatec screens, the color has a purple hue to it. The background is supposed to be black, but you can clearly see it looks kind of purple.

The purple hue looks ugly imho.

I'm still waiting for sprint.com to get some more units in (hopefully 0004) so I can replace all 3 of ours, and I'm getting scared because it's been 2.5 weeks without any. ;(

Agreed, but I don't know that all Nova panels have that hue. I have an 03 with the Nova panel and it definitely does *not* look like that.
I would just say I believe there will be a 30fps fix for the Nova panel. The only reason the Epson was first is because that's what the Developer had.
Also, ever panel tends to have their own advantages and disadvantages. I'd be very surprised if the Epson panel is the "ultimate" panel. There are probably tradeoff's to both panels ... we just haven't recognized them yet.
I do believe the Epson panel in that picture looks to have problems with the blacks looking a little grayer and the whites look a little white-washed, but that could simply be due to the brightness.
Who knows...maybe the 0004 revision will have the best panel of all. ;-)

Honestly I just want my input lag gone..I don't care about the colors really mine seems fine..
Part of me is just like hey if I am going to wait around for a complete fix then I might as well wait for the next phone that doesn't have it to begin with.

Well the 30fps fix also seemed to fix the input lag.
I understand why you might want to jump ship for a different phone. If I didn't love everything else about the EVO (and know that the issues I have are fixable), I would probably be in the same boat. Having said that, it seems like every device has their own issues. Granted the HTC devices I purchase always seem to always have a few more for some reason...

It might just be the picture or my monitor but the first time I looked at this one I thought the left EVO looked better than the right. Only later I found out everyone is saying the one of the left has the problems.

Aesthetics and responsiveness go a long way for me. It's hard to play games with a 200 or more touch delay.

AT&T Fortress

not sure where the ATT TP2 thread disappeared to, but i couldn't find it so im making a new thread.
On that old thread, their was a reveal of the Fortress, AT&T's version of the Touch Pro 2, with a funky keyboard.
I found something today that *might* suggest they are screwing it up *that* badly.
On Engadget, they show the T-Mobile version of the TP2 here...

They also show it lower on the page, however the 2nd image has the color scheme of the earlier leaked Fortress with the red keyboard, which leads me to believe this 2nd photo might actually BE the fortress.
If you look closely at the red keyboard, you'll see its more like the original TP2 layout, only red.
What do you guys think?
I'm pretty sure the thread went quietly into the dark night since we all managed to beat the topic into a small pile of dust.
To reiterate:
The phone image is nothing more than a mockup.
The specifications next to the image of a four row keyboard SPECIFY a 5 row keyboard.
It was an internal document which is pretty much not subject to analysis since AT&T employees won't recognize the phone even after it's released and in their hands with a sticker telling them "THIS IS THE HTC FORTRESS".
looks like the tmobile touch pro 2 is mess up to look at the buttons under the screen it looks like it pops up making it look cheap
yea the way the T-MO's TP2 looks makes it look like some cheap LG phone. the buttons look too cheap.
it would be nice if AT&T actually followed the specifications set down by HTC, and kept the 5-row offset keyboard config. I don't really mind the red keyboard, I just want the 5-row offset.
i on the other hand kinda bothered by the red keyboard but i think the new layout is pretty cool but i do want them to have the keyboard spacing like the original rather than close like tilt and fuze. we just have to wait for the release or some sneak pic snap shot...either way im most likely gonna buy it.
well, the point of this topic isnt to yank out the dead horse that is if the other pic of the keyboard is real or not, but rather to question if the pic i posted, is the fortress, or the Wing 2. The article stated it was for T-mobile, but the color scheme, and the pic above it suggest otherwise.
the first pic that lyian posted looks like the t-mo version of the TP2. not only because it says t-mobile on the device but because hardware buttons on the front of the device resemble the ones in the pic I posted earlier.
I'm gonna get the phone either way, but like jtoyz2 said, I hope the keyboard is offset and spaced rather than close together like on the tilt and fuze. it just looks so much better spaced out like that!

Look very closely at the image above... The color scheme is the same as the fortress leak below, BUT IT HAS 5 ROWS and they're offset.

lol ur right about the LG thing
Most important to me is:
when will it be available
Hope it start shipping soon !
i got some news from a friend of mine saying that the phone gonna release 6-8 weeks after the Iphone 3g S, because they dont want another similar (touch screen smartphone) to release in the same time frame as the iphone. Most likely sometime in August we should see it but before September for ATT. I cant wait just around the time that im due for a upgrade.
Too bad.
It was forecasted for June.
So more 2 months of wait.
I would buy today.

I think I might keep my options open though. If an Android phone surprisingly comes to ATT before the TP2, I think I might go with that.
Unless someone can convince me otherwise...
I read somewhere that the first android device coming out for AT&T is the lancaster?? I don't know for sure tho. I saw a spread sheet that was similar to what everyone saw when the "fortress" was unveiled, and it had "AT&T at the bottom right corner. but cmon, a 2.8 inch QVGA screen??
I saw an ATT TP2 in the wild
Hey all,
Well I saw an AA&T branded Touch Pro 2 on the weekend. The Guy that has it works for HTC in the USA and it looked exactly the same as the HTC version, (not red) with the AT&T branding on it. He said release wont be until Aug, which falls in line with the delay due to the IPhone 3GS release, he thought AT&T where going to be the last of the USA carries to release.
Just my 2 cents worth

That's great news! Just to clarify, when you say it looked exactly the same as the HTC version, you mean that it had the full 5 row qwerty and not the number pad on the side, right?
Also, did you happen to notice if it had a front facing camera?
Thanks.
I don't think our model will have the front-facing camera on it, since AT&T doesn't support video calling at the moment. but maybe, cos of all the rumors that video calling might become available for the iphone...why not the TP2???
and that's great news that it looks like the HTC branded model!!! +1 on evermore, how did the keyboard look???

[DISCUSSION] Anyone actually happy with the G2?

Hey guys!
First off, im new to this forum so i just wanted to say whats up...
Well, i ordered my G2 a couple days ago (it should be here tomorrow) and i have been reading alot of the topics and comments here..
-4 gb internal memory missing
-loose hinges
-hspa is not whats expected
-camera features
-no wifi tethering.....
i sold my vibrant on craigslist and got this phone... Is there anyone thats actually happy and satisfied with this phone??
Thanks everyone!!
-Mike
I am.
- tasker.
Yeah it is a really great phone. It has some quirks but none that are serious, but what phone doesn't. Overall solid phone and the good far outweighs the bad.

I'm quite happy with it.
My hinge is not springloaded, but the design of the hinge works so that you have to be holding it almost perfectly upside down for it to flip, and the way I hold it in bed has my fingers ever so slightly on the edge of the screen holding it in place.
HSPA+ is nice, if you have the coverage.
The phone rocks at 800MHz, I can't wait until it's rooted so we can see how it fares at 1GHz.
Tethering will come with root. Don't really care about wifi tethering, USB is good for me.
Wifi reception is also much improved over my G1.
I am extremely happy with this phone ! Keep in mind most of the comments
you will hear are 90-10 . Thats 90% bad and 10% good . Just a reminder to
not get too worried about it because thats just the way people are
Coming from the Vibrant, I will say that I loved th escreen size on it, as well as the slimmer form factor. That being said, the lack of led notifications, a camera flash, non-functioning gps (even with "fixes", it was half-ass at best), no trackball (which made placing the cursor at specific points bewteen words very difficult), and Samsung's seeming unwillingness to commit to a hard deadline for a fix to any of the software issues described here and eslewhere, let alone a definite date for a 2.2 update, had made me nostalgic for an HTC device.
Unfortunately, when I got the Vibrant, my wife became the proud new owner of my carefully kept, rooted, booted, and scooted Nexus One, so I was stuck.
Personally, I really like it. It's like a Nexus one with a keyboard, without the colored trackball, with a faster processor, an edge-lit trackpad, slightly more girth, and a better gpu.

It is a solid phone. Think of it as a N1 with a kisk-ass keyboard!
I am a happy camper.

i love my G2, it performs far better than what I expected it to be.
-Almost everyone is in the 4GB memory debacle - I am sure T-mo/HTC will address this issue
- i am one of the lucky ones, my hinge is not loose when I hold the upside down.
-You have to give HSPA sometime.... only a fraction of their network is under FULL HSPA..... and its given that over time that network will only become stronger and wider.
-Camera is good enough for me, really I am not expecting to shoot pro videos but I have been satisfied with what it shoots.
-wifi, thats just a matter of time until ROOT/ROM business starts and we can have wifi tethering as easy as cake

thanks bro. i was actually a little worried about the screen flipping over on me. i was just imaging myself texting and constantly having to deal with that issue. lol
I love the phone, and thats coming from a g1 --> mytouch --> nexus -->G2
I admit I was leery when I went to purchase my phone at Radio Shack. I made the guy open the box so I could see this hinge issue. I realized it's not an issue. Just a different style of hinge which works really well. I guess people were surprised that if you hold the phone upside down by solely the keyboard the weight would pull the hinge down.. once I actually had it in my hands it didn't seem like a glitch or anything, and it's actually something you have to do intentionally and rather carelessly imo. Why would you risk holding the phone upside down by just the keyboard? Unless you're asking for the thing to snap in half.
The hinge thing was my biggest concern, (cuz I use my phone laying down in bed) but once I saw that it was blown out of proportion I went for it. If you hold the phone you see how difficult it is to seperate the screen from the KB without doing so purposefully.
I have HSPA in my area and am amazed at how fast it is. It's like constant wifi.
I was surprised they had it here (Albany NY) because we were like the last city to get 3G.
The 2gig 4gig thing didn't bother me, I just figured it was a typo. And we're not talking Ram or Rom here... it's just storage space. You get an 8gig card and my G1 had 256mbs internal storage, so 2gigs should be more than enough for 99% of users. I didn't care about that at all. In fact I rarely look at internal storage on android devices since they all take SD cards and you can install apps on SD. But i guess I see how some people would feel gyped out of their "GeeeeBeeees."

love it - came from a vibrant and was worried i'd miss the vibrant's screen - lol, haven't even thought about it since pulling the G2 off the charger

and yesterday l left this valley i'm located in (blocks good signal) and found HSPA+ svc 1/2 mile up the road - pulled 6.8Mbps D/L speed - now i've got to get a wireless repeater so i can pull HSPA+ here at home
Also as you can see from my Sig the HSPA+ works like a champ.

Haha.. Yeah i think the only thing i really liked about the vibrant was the screen.. but to be honest it looked really unrealistic.. and it freaking ate my battery as if it was a buffet!!

So let's talk about the bad

Okay so don't nobody want to talk about what they don't like... Well here's mines comparing it to the epic 4g
The phone (4G touch) is the coldest out, just want to put that out there.
The graphics or camera don't meet the expectations as a part2 of this phone.
that's the only thing I can say thats wrong with this phone...
I'm not trolling, just giving my opinion.
Just got the phone today so don't cuss me out because I said this.
But still again I'm still playing with it.

Graphics or camera?!?
I think you nedx to play nova 2 hd and take a few 1080p videos and then check back in....
The camera is the best I seen on a phone (in person)
And graphics are amazing... Better than any dual core phone imo
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
trow-uhllllll
Aside from the fact that when I read OP I was all like "what is this I don't even", if we are to assume that he intends to take exception with the "graphics or camera" I must profess, with as stiff an upper lip as I can muster, that I would prefer he were to GTFO with his trolling.
If by some peculiar stretch of the internet's good will OP has truly spoken with veracity of his mind and thoughts, well, I think it goes without saying that the sooner his opinion be disregarded the better.
I've never seen a better cellphone camera, hands down, ever. I'm pretty blown away. So far as "graphics" are concerned--as vacuous as such a statement is--we'll assume he means anything to do with 3D graphic rendering and/or reproduction. Also the finest performance I've ever seen on a cell phone. Sure, it isn't qHD, but if that is a surprise to you it would suit you well to stop purchasing bleeding edge smartphones without knowing what the hell you are talking about.
The bad:
Supplies charging cable too short.
I guess no phone can be perfect
My dislike is the screen wake lagg, and which will just doubtedly be fixed in a rom or kernel and it won't make me any food??? I'm waiting though..
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I just wish this phone was able to make me a sammich and get me a beer.
The camera is pretty sweet, though the Epic was good too. (My N8 smashes it, but then again that's that phone's main selling point.)
I haven't used it long enough to check out the radios, but it seems like Samsung pulled it together.

I agree - the bad being the shortest charging cable I've ever seen! Barely reaches the top of the nightstand...
Fortunately easily solved on Amazon - actual Samsung branded car charger cord for $4, home charger with longer cord for $6, $1.50 for a longer Samsung USB cable...
I was also disappointed that it didn't come with a micro SD card. My buddy's DroidX I think has 16gb onboard, and came with a 16gb card too. To me, 16gb onboard is more than I need, but for a "superphone" dolled up with all these extras and details, figured they wouldn't go cheap on the power cord and no SD card.
I'm only partly disappointed that the screen resolution isn't 960x540 like the Bionic and a few others. It's not really any disadvantage, and I'd easily pick the rich colors and ridiculously black blacks over a higher res anyday - so much easier on the eyes. But mostly on principal - I'm still shaking my head that the iPhone 4 has been out so long, and it should have been 3 weeks (I'm exaggerating) before other phones came out with screens of either similar pixel density or resolution. It's not rocket science, and Apple does all their manufacturing through contract manufacturers for this stuff... a true OEM like Samsung should be able to nail that one pretty easily, right?
Also saw some GPS numbers on another thread that showed only ho-hum GPS reception... the comparison phone walked all over it. But (to stay positive), if there was a radio/antenna to skimp out on, I'm glad it was this one.

I much prefer this phone over my 3D for many reasons. I can't think of an existing phone I'd rather have but I will say
The EVO 3D got better data speeds for me - that is based on regular test in the same location.
I prefer sense but that is a matter of opinion.
This thing seems to take longer to charge than any phone I've had using the AD charger.

WOW... You guy's are hard, I said I wasn't Trolling but whatever.
I took a picture with my old Epic and then my wife took the same pic with her Nexes 4G and I compared all pic's and the Epic 4G and Nexes 4g had better pic quality than my new Epic 4G touch.
But that's not a deal breaker I still love the phone.
And the charger cord is to short ( LOL ) But I have a lot of them around the house.
Well enough about this... TIME TO ROOT THIS BABY!

Agreed!
My only other complaint is the phone doesn't store my screen timeout settings through reboot nor my contact shortcuts using buddy now. After every boot I have to change this again. It is a bit frustrating. Anyone else having that issue? Other than these mentioned things the phone is amazing and I will have a hard time getting anything else for quite some time I think.

I agree I love this phone but the data speeds are a little low. I got with full bars of 4g on my evo 3d 2200 kbs and on my epic touch I am lucky to get 1100 kbs that is the main thing I see wrong or that I dont like about this phone. But that can be easily fixed with a radio update like they did on the 3d.

I was a little disappointed that the E4GT will not walk my dog for me. I hear the new quad core phones coming out in Q1 2012 will and I can't wait for that. Other than that, this phone blows away anything else I have had....and I have had them all......

LOL @ HTC Repair

This will be an amusing read for most. Dead pixels not a HW defect.. Purple Camera not a HW defect silly HTC. Phone has been sitting there for 3 days + waiting for repair fail.

Actually dead pixels, as well as tint on the camera are not always hardware issues. Although they sometimes are, this is not always the case.
1:17:12 PM Customer
i didnt test the camera on that device so not certain if it has purple tint or not

and yeah dead pixels/stuck pixels are hardware manufacturer defects with the panel

I do apologize for any inconvenience or delays. We do try to make our customers happy by processing special request at times. However, this can cause delays in our regular turn around for repairs.

which I hope is listed in my repair request

I would say this is going to get us no where. I cannot agree with you on this matter. There are things that do seem like obvious hardware defects that are not. At this time the repair center is looking into your request. Once our Tier 2 team has more information you will be contacted.

Both of those items are listed in your complaint.

Well I cant force someone to agree with me about dead/stuck pixels being a hardware issue

Nope
Being in the I.T./Helpdesk field myself, if you're needing help, being rude to the tech/customer service rep will not get you anywhere. Agree or disagree. And the things listed COULD absolutely be software related, not hardware.

Cause dust under the screen totally is a software issue. Highly doubtful that a dead pixel is a software issue as it is a defect in the panel. Just straight up visible blue/white pixels on certain backgrounds as well as a big peice of black dirt under the screen. While a stuck/dead pixel can be fixed by software (very slim chance) it is a HW fault. I'm not talking about seeing pixels/hot spots in my photos btw. The purple tint has been resolved by changing out the camera. There's a thread with other members indicating that is what HTC did to fix the issue.

2nd... I never said the dead pixels/camera WASN'T a hardware issue. I just said it was possible it was a software issue. The tech is simply trying to rule out and troubleshoot. Once those problems are ruled out of the equation, then he can move onto the next step. It's the order of operations by which he's probably been trained. Your snotty comments and rudeness aren't going to help you is all I'm saying. If I was that tech I'd tell you to pound sand...
Anytime I have someone that needs help with an issue, I go much further out of my way to help them out if they treated me with respect up front.

Clearly someone is taking this too personally! No crap I never said that the tech said that dust under the screen was a software problem . The chances of dead pixel on a display being a software issue is quite slim and practically next to none. Maybe you're that tech and that's why you're getting so mad . BTW I didn't link the full conversation but the tech was a total ***** to me when I asked for an update for my device status so I returned the favor. I posted cause I found it amusing that they would give some other bs answer. When pretty much it is KNOWN that it is a HW issue in this case with the dead pixels and purple tinted camera. Because they are COMMON HW defects in this phone.

purple tint is a H/W failure, they where hopeful with the 4.3 patch to fix the sensors latency and it helped with some peoples tint but not everyone which makes me think the sensor was over driven till it distorted.

I hear that they replace the camera module and insulate it properly to address the issue. Heat seems to trigger the purple tint in low lightning conditions.

Phone finally went into repair today (after 8 days of just sitting there). I requested they not update my software and fed them the BS "Oh I like my experience as it is". Now to see if they actually do it. I haven't seen much action in the s-off forum lately either .
there used to be an allowed amount of dead pixels before manufacturers would warranty replace a screen, don't know what the rules are anymore. I have 1 dead pixel, but also a phone that the trim is flush and a camera that doesn't turn the pictures funny shades. I can deal with 1 dead pixel.
Some people believe in this unicorn device that will be 100% perfect and will go through replacement after replacement in search of it, only to grow more frustrated. It just ain't worth it.

Replacement AT&T Note7 *Supposedly* Overheated on a Southwest Flight 10/4

So we have pictures of a box with a safe "black square" indicator on it and an overheated Note7 on the floor in the aisle of a Southwest flight that was pushing back from gate at Baltimore. Before the OMG! crowd hits, with the U.S. CPC involved, we'll get some tangible information soon. If in fact the phone on the floor is a "safe" Note7 and it overheated Samsung's screwed. If there's more to the story (EG: the phone in fact wasn't a replacement) we'll find that out soon. Until then the glass half full people can assume there's more at play than the story indicated and the glass half empty people can work themselves up in to a frenzy with scant information to go by.

Yep. That's what he said. If it's true it'll be corroborated soon. If it's false we'll know that even sooner. The difference between true and false means $1B or more to Samsung so I'm sure they are all over this in droves.

Problem is, if this is a one off natural battery fire fluke (like you see with a lot of phones) it won't matter. The Note 7 will still be finished by the fall out as the media will go crazy (they already are).

As a glass half full person I accepted that .01% of the pre-replacement Note7's had the potential to overheat. I was perfectly willing to keep my original phone for months waiting until I nicked or scratched it to turn it in for replacement. The only reason I exchanged it early is the stupid nag screen Samsung pushed out via a non-preventable update. Of the initial 90ish reported incidents 30ish of those later turned out to be proven false or the claimants failed to participate in any type of investigation which can be taken as false claims also. How big a risk this is/was is up to personal interpretation. Here's a pic of the Note7 on the floor of the Southwest plane after it overheated.

It looks like all the other pics of overheated Note7's I've seen. In all of those pics none of the phones got hot enough to melt the plastic parts like the home button which is an inch away from the battery. Plastic melts at 145 degrees which is less than the 160 degrees poultry needs to be cooked to in order to be eaten safely. If this situation happened to a second tier brand like Oppo, OnePlus, or leEco it wouldn't have even made front page news. Because Samsung's a gigantic market-leading powerhouse it not only made the front page but stayed their forever because of the click-bait value.
I'd be surprised if we didn't officially hear more about this particular incident by mid-day tomorrow.

Funny, I thought I was the only person thinking conspiracy!
I find it odd that a lot of these users with issues claimed they've switched to iphone right after the incident. I mean, why would one switches an entire ecosystem just because an Android phone (Note 7 in this case) catches fire? Wouldn't most of them switch to ANOTHER Android device?

I'm going on 2, 25 hour flights in a month. I'm not entirely sure I'd feel confident taking a replaced Note 7 with me. The picture certainly looks like a battery failure, it's in the same location as all the others. If and it's a big "If" this is real and it's the same problem, its a gigantic issue for Samsung. Do they pull the whole Note 7 lineup and call it a day for this year? Of course, this guy could be trying something on.
Samsung should have just gone with the replaceable battery in the first place. Not doing so has cost them Billions. Many Billions.

The guy is on a plane, (last place you'd want a smartphone to explode). He turned off the Phone. It's an exchanged phone. And STILL it exploded.
This is like Apple's dream. If they'd "staged" it, they couldn't do any better.
There's a serious war here gentlemen.
Also it's insteresting that these phones only explode in the US or China. (All other countries were proven as hoax).

Maybe because he was travelling by plane and to prove he had a new replacement N7 after the recall. But yeah - this all sounds a little fishy and these articles all seem to jump right into iPhone, iPhone, iPhone go get one now (!) type of thing. Feels forced.

Yep. That's what he said. If it's true it'll be corroborated soon. If it's false we'll know that even sooner. The difference between true and false means $1B or more to Samsung so I'm sure they are all over this in droves.

Yes, that is what he said, and it may be true but does seem tad odd that since this happened the morning, he had time to:
- deal with the airport/airline staff after the incident (answer questions, etc.)
- go buy a new iphone (gratuitously added in the article)
- get the original Note 7 box
- get interviewed by the Verge
...All in time for the 1:15 story.
It also seems the timing of the incident was too perfect. It happened in that narrow window while the plane was in the gate. If it happened before, it would be a lot less dramatic, if it happened after take-off, it would have been too dramatic.
All possible, but kinda makes you say hmmmmm...
