Question about selling my EVO (For current Sprint customers) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the Google I/O EVO which i got for free.
About two weeks ago in activated it on my account as a new Sprint customer.
Sprint locked me in on a 2yr contract as i am a new customer, even though i did not get a subsidized phone from them...
Now i would like to cancel my account before i reach 30 days to avoid the ETF.
My question is:
Once my account is canceled, can i go ahead and sell it on ebay or do i need to ask Sprint to do something with the device ESN before i sell it?
Is simply canceling the account enough?
I also asked the Sprint rep if once i cancel the account i get to keep the phone (as it was provided to me by Google at the I/O), they did not know how to answer my question....anyone knows?
I want to sell it and me sure the buyer can activate the phone without issues and i have never done this with Sprint.

The phone is yours, and make sure you get them to remove the sn from the account.

After you pay any and/or all fees off on your account that is due, Sprint will free the phone up to be sold or do whatever you wish with.
I also asked the Sprint rep if once i cancel the account i get to keep the phone (as it was provided to me by Google at the I/O), they did not know how to answer my question....anyone knows?
Since you got the phone from a 3rd party and not Sprint you should be able to keep the phone and not return it.

I'm in the same predicament as you are. How dare Sprint lock us on a 2 year contract when we didn't get a subsidized phone (Google I/O HTC Evo 4G) from them. Actually the customer rep. I've spoken to who set up my account told me not once but thrice that I won't have a 2 year contract. Aside from that, she also said that she was able to waived the activation fee. But when I received the confirmation email for my Sprint Wireless Service Plan I've noticed that there's a contract on it. So I'm thinking of selling my Evo as well.

I had exactly the same thing.
When i activated my phone the rep on the phone told me there will be NO 2 years commitment.
The day after i see an a welcome email from Sprint with a 2 years term in it.
I had no activation fee though.

Sprint forced me to activate a new line to get the Epic 4G Touch

I walked into my local Sprint store with $600 cash in my pocket anticipating to walk out with a brand new SGS2E4GT at full MSRP without any additional commitment on my contract. (Have you guys noticed the full non contract price for this device is not listed.)
After the sales rep got the device from the stock room, we were ready to set it up with my existing account. After he logs into my account he notifies me that Im not eligable to an upgrade until January. So with a smile, I informed him that Im aware that Im not eligable yet & thats why Im willing to pay the full price for the phone. Then he said, Sorry sir, but effective today, every sprint device is ONLY available at a carrier subsidized price to people willing to activate a new line or those qualified for an upgrade. Which means nobody can purchase a phone at full price & swap it to their current number. (This **** didn't make any sense to me at all.)But any ways long story short, after a few minutes of blah blah blah, I walked out of the store with a brand new GS2, and a 3rd line to my account which I will not use but will be billed monthly $20 plus $10 premium data. Sounds like you went to an indirect retailer and not a Sprint-owned corporate store because that's not true at all.

While I'm aware of their new "no device without a 2 year contract" policy I didn't think it was impossible to replace a phone without a new contract. Frankly it sounds like you got fncked. I would call Sprint and escalate this up to someone that gives a fnck because frankly this is a gigantic load of bull****.
...there is no way in hell that you can't even replace a device on an existing line/contract. If that is true, well, there is NO REASON AT ALL TO STAY WITH SPRINT. (VERY SLOW) UNLIMITED DATA IS NO REASON TO STAY WITH A COMPANY THAT WONT EVEN LET YOU REPLACE A PHONE WITHOUT A NEW CONTRACT.
Even given their new restrictive policies I highly doubt that what you were subject to was actual official Sprint policy--I don't give a **** what they say, they are likely idiots who interpreted the new policy wrong (either for their own benefit or merely out of their own extreme ignorance).
Escalate this as appropriate. This is bull****...and if you find that this is actual official policy please demand the section of the contract that specifies this and LET US KNOW. We will spread the word and take heed which will result in Sprint losing US and EVERYBODY WE HAVE ALWAYS RECOMMENDED GO TO SPRINT. EVERYBODY. Do you hear that Sprint?
...if (and when) you (most likely) find this to be complete bull**** on your Sprint reps part (and I would be sure to post the store number and location here and many other places, store manager name included) I would also demand a form of compensation for having been lied to and tricked into a contract. Nothing extravagant, but, something you find equivalent in value to your time and expense required to deal with this crap.
Yeah, I had no issues getting mine today either and technically my 22 month upgrade was not until april.

Make sure you return the device by Sunday so you don't get charged an activation fee. Given the situation you described, you can probably get any charges reversed by care anyway... but to be on the safe side, return it within 3 days to avoid the fee for sure.
That's BS, u got the short end of the stick. So much to talk about here. First of all Sprint is known to make an exception that close out of a 2 year agreement and provide you with full subsidization. At the very least they will provide you with partial subsidization. The reason why they probably don't sell them at full price is because it probably doesn't ever happen because it makes zero sense even with the recent early termination hike to $350 dollars. If you want it right now, process the order overnight on the line in question with overnight delivery from a retailer like wirefly.com and return and close out the new line u purchased. I'm pretty sure they'll give you options to buy without a new line at wirefly. That would be really bad for business if they didn't. I think the return policy is 14 days now and you may suffer a restocking fee for it all. Good luck.

This phone doesn't have a mail in rebate. And remember you can call customer care tell them that they are not allowing you to buy the phone. At least I didn't get a rebate.

I was just going to say this. If u go on sprint.com u can buy the phone without an upgrade for $499.99 so that just shows that place screwed u. Hope u get this straightened out cuz thats bull**** man.
Yeah use the 14 day satisfaction guarantee to tell that store a big **** you.
Just pay the ETF on your old line. Depending how long you had it the most it can be is $200 but since you said your upgrade was in January, it should be a lot less then that even be less then that. In the end you will save more money then buying the phone outright as long as you do not care about getting a new number.....
Then you go go thank the guy in the Sprint store for saving you a ****load of money!
And I thought there were no mail in rebates? Did you actually get a mail in rebate with the phone?

How to upgrade with SERO

I've been to Best Buy and the Sprint store, and both say my plan needs to from my current SERO plan to upgrade and get the S3. I absolutely don't want to get rid of my SERO plan. How do I upgrade to the S3 and still keep my SERO plan? Anybody else have this problem?

I doubt the stores can handle upgrading with SERO. I bit the bullet and upgraded directly w/ Sprint. They are able to get you to keep SERO, as long as you are on SERO Premium 500.

Not sure what your question is, are they telling you that you need to switch off your SERO plan? If so, that is false, I have SERO and am using the S3. I ordered mine through telesales (with all discounts) and activated it no problem on SERO Premium.

Interesting! Which discounts are you referring to? I'm curious what you got the phone for through telesales, and if you had to pay the activation fee.
I duo not have SERO but... when i went to upgrade they told me my plan had to be updated as I wasn't on a qualifying plan..although I had everything data with chase discount... they had to call sprint and provide dealer code to process upgrade to retaIn discount..although I did get a text stating they needed proof out employment within 24 hrs

Hello. I'm actually a Sprint employee and u can in fact upgrade your phone in any corporate store. U will in fact have to change your plan because they do not give us access to those plans in store but can simply call in to care to have your SERO premium plan restored. Or going through telesales directly would in fact eliminate a need to do this although if you are not already on a premium plan you will have to make that change. But a great discount over the regular plans. Hope this helps!

You have to call *2 and tell them you want to upgrade.. anything to do with employee line you have to call a certain department. I just added a line and they took my order for the gs3

Don't call *2, they won't know what SERO is. Call 888-876-8381, thats the SERO accounts number. You can call them and tell them you are at Best Buy and want to purchase a phone to add yo your SERO account. They should be able to do it, Assuming you are on a SERO Premium account.
Even at the Sprint Corporate store I had to call that number, they didn't have the secret codes to handle my account.
Corporate Store
I went into my local Corporate Store and walked out with my shiny, new SIII. The salesman had the codes to keep my SERO500 plan intact. No problems. And since I have the SERO plan, I paid NO activation fee. :cyclops::cyclops::cyclops:
I went to Walmart and while there I spoke to a sero customer service and they basically said to upgrade with Walmart and Walmart will change my plan over to a normal plan. I would have to then call sero customer care and they would switch it back.
Most sprint stores can't even touch the Sero plan. ( I have it as well ) You would either have to do the upgrade online or get lucky and find a store to do it and allow you to attach the phone to the plan over the phone.. The big problem is that they will have to replace the wimax code with the new LTE code.. I've upgraded two of the Sero plans in my house.. yes it can be done. Most at sprint just doesn't know how.. goodluck
it's better to have upgrade to sero premium and then going to a corporate store and having them upgrade the phone. that's what i did.. the sales rep at the store couldn't directly upgrade the phone using the computer but she called sero dept and gave them the phone serial numbers and within 10 minutes i was out of the store with my S3.

OK so heres the deal with the SERO plans, and why you can/can't upgrade in stores/3rd partys.
Sprint is very strict about not letting employees access other employees accounts. Its considered a big no no. Its not about having codes or what not...The fact is when an employee tries to open up another employee account (or one linked to an employee account, eg SERO) it simply tells them that ONLY employee accounts cant handle this type of account. Dialing a specific number is not necessary either, as previously stated. Dialing *2 from a SERO or any employee account will actually take you directly to employee accounts as the phone number is setup to do just that. If it doesn't take you to employee accounts for whatever reason and you get to a normal customer care rep, they will simply tell you they cannot access the account as it is an employee account and provide you the number. As far as upgrade? I as an employee cannot upgrade in ANY store corporate or not. May be different with SERO plans (obviously it is, because the previous posters already stated they were able to). I was highly disappointed when i went in to my local corp store Friday and couldn't walk out with a new S3. However, its Monday now, and its out for delivery (sitting patiently by door)

Seems like it is different for SERO.
I was able to walk out of a corporate store with a new S3, but only by calling the SERO number directly as I stated earlier. I was told at the store that they don't have the codes to upgrade an LTE device on SERO, hence they had me call the Sprint SERO direct number 888-876-8381. The store rep signed me up for a new account, and the person on the phone transfered it back to my old SERO account while I was still at the store. It's a roundabout way to do it but I stayed on the SERO plan and didn't have to pay the upgrade fee either.

T-Mobile contract cancellation

Anybody guys made contract cancellation once you received phone?
Nope. You have 14 days to do so, 30 days to return if you buy outright. Have fun.

I use TMobile prepaid and just would like to cancel contract and keep using GS4 on my existing prepaid. I've paid full price for the GS4. So when I receive it I can just cancel my contract and this will not affect any additional fees and/or blacklisting IMEI etc. ?

Go talk to a rep in-store. If you signed up for another plan, while also paying full price for the GS4, you have no contract. You can cancel that plan at any time, you own the device.

Right I just mentioned that for now GS4 is unavailable for prepaid users so I had to subscribe for a contract to order it.

I have a prepaid account but I signed up for a new line and purchased the phone outright.
i know a bunch of other people on this forum did the same thing.

Yeah I looked on the T-Mobile site...no Galaxy S4 for prepaid phones. You have to give them your State ID and SSN to subscribe to a "no contract plan" where you pay the full price of the phone+$70/month. Which is complete bullcrap, because prepaid is the exact same thing, minus being forced to give T-Mobile your State ID/SSN for no reason at all. It's not just T-Mobile either, it's the same way with Sprint. Carriers want as much of your information as they can get; it's not enough you pay for service and the phone anymore.
My issue was much more interesting that anyone here experienced I believe.
When I ordered to my SSN and ID they haven't approve me and I was very wondering why cause I have a great credit score.
Then I contacted credit bureau and find out that my credit score fall <<400 that is unbelievable. Further speech and I realized that I've become a victim of identity theft. Now they confirmed this and recalculated my credit score as it should be. But to save time I had to order GS4 with my girfriend's papers.

The only one thing I have to do is cancel the contract once I receive it tomorrow.
So as I bought phone outright should I call somewhere to cancel it or I can just utilize sim card that I receive?
I'm also a prepaid customer, ended up buying the phone full price. Just hate the fact that even if you're paying the ful price you still have to sign up for service. I hope the only thing we have to do is give them a call and cancel the new line.

I did the same thing. I've been a prepaid customer for a year or so, and I opened a post-paid plan account so I could get the GS4. I also paid for the phone in full. I received it today and I already put my prepaid plan sim card on it. I need to cancel the post-paid plan but I'm not sure if I should do it now or wait. The sim card that came with the phone is still untouched inside the box.

If you paid full price for the phone it's only $50/mo. The other option is to pay $149 up front for the phone, then it's $70/mo.

Ok I was thinking that it included 2.5 gb data, but that's an extra $10. So it's $60 if you want 2.5 gb or $70 if you want unlimited.

I ordered mine yesterday night am planning to cancel service and use the phone also out of the country. Reading carefully through threads, but cannot find an answer: is the t-mobile S4 sim-locked? If yes and I paid the full price, can I get an unlocking code from t-mobile? Thanks

I dont think it is SIM unlocked.
I havent read yet on any forums if anyone has been able to have it unlocked yet by t-mobile.

I think my experience might rival yours in "interesting"...
I also want to use the S4 on the $30 prepaid plan, and therefore intended to go the route of buying the phone with a $50 line and then cancel it.
I tried to buy online, but it told me I needed to contact a sales rep to complete the order. After starting an online chat with a sales rep, it turned out they required me to pay an additional $400 deposit. (I am pretty sure I never had an incidence with my credit rating so I am not sure why) As I intended to move over to pre-paid, I asked about the policy of how to get back the deposit if I cancel the line before the 1 year is up after which you automatically get back the deposit. After that she started to accuse me of committing fraud! and that t-mobile is not in the business of selling phones. I then asked her how asking about cancellation would violate their new un-carrier marketing and she asked me "where I came up with such a thing as un-carrier". She then simply canceled my order and hung up on me.
I don't think I have ever been accused of committing fraud before for wanting to pay a store over $1000 to buy their product!
I then tried to order again to get a more knowledgeable and competent representative. Unfortunately this time my bank decided t-mobile was "committing fraud" because they thought a $1000 was an unreasonably large amount for a internet transaction.
After the bank unblocked my credit card, because I told them I really do want to spend that much on a phone, I tried it again. Unfortunately on the third time the "account verification department " declined my request without an explanation of why they wouldn't take my $1000.
So I spent about 3 hours on the phone with t-mobile on Monday and I still don't have a S4 I don't think I have ever had a company as adamant to not taking my money as t-mobile. Now I'll have to wait till the 15th before I can try and buy it in a store
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong, or how to convince t-mobile to sell me a phone?

That's horrible. The reps are obviously just confused with the whole new setup. Every rep I talk to gives me a different story on how/when my classic plan will convert over to the new value plan.

Reps are stupid. I would try and see if you can get it price matched at best buy and buy it there. They should since it will be off contract and you're paying full price. I just don't think they have it in stock yet.

Looks like you won't be able to do it before 15 except asking your relative/friend to do it for you, as I've done it.
Their credit dept haven't approve me since I had credit alert on my credit history due to identity fraud.
Your situation, did they tell you why you should pay 400 deposit?
Have u ever had their postpaid account before? Cause if you've never cancelled their contracts before and had no issues with credit score then I'd suggest to contact credit score bureau and figure out from there why you've been declined.

I'm currently with Sprint and would love to switch to Tmobile. That being said has anyone ever had Tmobile help pay or credit when switching to Tmobile?
i know i've read someone claiming that in the past but i cant' find the story via search. My closest corporate store is about 40min away so not sure its worth trying or not.

I'd be jealous if you actually manage to do so. I know I've seen some ancient posts on slickdeals where some folks have managed to do this albeit with a lot of negotiating. I was in the same boat as you. I ended up paying the ETF. I was already paying sprint for providing me with essentially nothing, it didn't make sense to wait out another year. I made the switch and couldn't be happier.
I had some success with this - but I didn't do all that much for it so it may be one of those right time/right place/right person asked scenarios. I was checking out a T-Mobile store and was chatting up the employee, and mentioned that I'd love to switch but it'll be a long time before I could afford it due to ETFs. I asked if they ever do anything about things like that, and was then put into contact with a T-Mobile rep that handles business accounts among other things (more of a corporate guy I would expect). He had me figure out what my ETFs were, and then said he'd put a same-value credit on my account if I switched. He mailed me a tester phone to try out even, which was nice. I ended up keeping that tester phone for my wife, and per his instructions went into the T-Mobile store I went to originally and got set up. I called him afterwards and he put the credit on my account. I couldn't believe it to be honest (it was a few hundred bucks - came from Verizon), but I was rather happy with the outcome. I still had to pay the ETFs out-of-pocket of course, but in exchange I didn't have a phone bill for a few months

Best thing you can do....
#1. Call T-Mobile and tell them you wanna switch carriers but don't sound set on them, mention verizon and att.
#2. If you have no problem paying $70+ a month, sell your current phone and head to costco or wirefly for a new line and a discounted device.
#3. If you want a cheaper monthly and can pay for a device upfront, ask t-mobile for a migration incentive, ask for a supervisor and if they don't satisfy ask for their supervisor.
T mobile has ran promotions for this in the past.
Not gonna happen though. Now that t mobile is all no contact they are not going to pay to get you out of your contact when there is no guarantee you will even stay with them because your not in a contract

Just tried to see if they would provide any credit. The answer was no. They simply can't do it. Was looking to transfer 4 lines. Will have to wait when my ETF is over or Sprint terms change.

What I'm about to offer is good as a last resort, it worked for me, but i'm not a lawyer, and I'm only sharing this for those of you who are desp, and really want out of Sprint.
The only way I could find to get out without paying the ETF is to call sprint and tell them you are moving out of the country for a job relocation or something. They will ask you to prove it with an apartment lease, or utility bill, etc. The utility bill is hard to prove, but you shouldn't have a problem creating a lease agreement with a family member who lives abroad, etc.
In my case, I used an apartment of a friend, and made it all legit, and they let me out without paying ETF.
Sprint sucks.
Just do what I did with sprint, roam until they kick you out without ETF. Some people see this as cheating your way out but believe me after dozens of calls and complains about horrible service at home they didn't do nothing to help me. Just broken promises of service improvements, towers upgrades, etc. Before I hadsSprint I was with Verizon for 10 years and I never remember calling them because I had service issues.
So Sprint doesn't rape you with ETF fees anymore, when they kick you for roaming too much? That is a good thing. I know that they used to make people pay the fees even though they kicked their customer.

Contract Buy-out. How does it work?

I am probably moving from sprint to T-mobile on saturday, and thus from the m7 to the m8. Sprint's been a jerk to my mom (her phone, LG optimus G hasn't worked since 4g rolled out, something about it being incompatible with the network or some such non-sense) so we're switching and having them buy out our contract. Does anyone have experience with this program? Is it pretty straight forward?

I just figured that since the people here were t-mobile, some might have gone through the process already and would know about it first hand.
Well I was actually a sprint customer I went through the process. It wasn't call a contract buyout. what I actually pay was for months remaining at $10 a month... And that was your termination fee.. Also another way to approach it I'm not sure if T Mobile still offer that but they're paying the termination fee if you switch from different carrier.

I just switched 4 lines over to tmobile from sprint and couldnt be happier. Just did it this past weekend so i havent had the etfs show up on my bill yet but i will let you know when it goes through. From what i was told you are spot on. trade in your sprint phone and they pay your etf and get you trade in value of your phone off a new one from tmobile. i was told its best to pay the etfs when they show up so it doesnt become past due while you are waiting for the tmobile gift card to come through so it doesnt effect your credit.

I don't really have 1300 dollars or so that I can spare, so I guess I'll just have to hope it comes quick and they don't ding me too bad. I'm just excited for a new phone and (hopefully) more reliable service. T-mobile claims to have LTE around me, and pretty decent HSPA where that is lacking, so hopefully it's better than sprint, where we just recently got spotty LTE
I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile last week. As I understand it, you just get your new service with T-Mobile and they handle porting over your number and ending your service with Sprint. Once that's done, you just have to wait for the bill that has your early termination fee, then take it to the T-Mobile store and they'll reimburse you that amount in the form of a Visa gift card and it's supposed to take 4-6 weeks to receive it. I'm hoping I can time it well enough where I can get the reimbursement before paying the bill to Sprint. If not, I'll just eat the cost until I get the money back from T-Mobile.
Note that they'll only reimburse you up to $650. This should cover anyone on a single plan, but can't speak for those on large family plans.
I can definitely say it's worth the money and time to switch. The service I've gotten with T-Mobile is excellent, and where it isn't (note, I haven't personally encountered poor signal on T-Mobile yet), WiFi calling on the M8 works great.
In order for them to pay off your ETF (Up to $350) you have to port over your phone number and give them your old device. The $650 you hear about is the maximum you can get for switching ($350 for ETF and $300 for device) They also do a credit check and that will determine if you need to pay a deposit for your new phone. If you have good enough credit then all you pay is the taxes on your new device. The cost of the device is then split up across 24 months on your bill.

My understanding was that it was up to 650 per line. I know I'll get 85 for each of my phones (One m7's), so it'll be more like 430 or so per line. But my ETF with sprint is 1300ish, which would fall under the 350/line that they offer. Or at least that's what they led me to believe over chat.
Also, I have 4 lines on my sprint account and have been in good standing with them so I don't imagine that the credit check would be a problem, and it's a family plan so if I can't do it we can try my mom, or my grampa until someone can.

The max they'll cover for an ETF is $350, it says so on their website. the $650 total is for the ETF and the amount they can give you for a device. In your case it would be $435 per line ($350 ETF and $85 for your device) You ETF with Sprint is pretty outrageous, is that just for your single line or is a total for all lines on your account?

There are 4 lines on the account, and the oldest one in terms of an upgrade is from last july. When we were in the sprint store, we were working with a lady and the supervisor and when we brought up leaving for t-mobile or something since they weren't willing to do a whole lot of anything other than tell us to wait for a software patch, she said that we had "about 1300" in ETF fees. Did we really want to pay that instead of just deal with it for a while? I brought up the t-mobile buyout stuff, and that got her real quiet real fast. The way she said it really bothered me though. Just the smug implied "we've got you by the wallet for another year and half. deal with it"

Tmobile pays up to 350 per line for your cancellation fee. You have to give them ANY Sprint Network phone to qualify for this program, but it does NOT have to be the current Sprint phone you have.
What I did was go on ebay and bought a 20 dollar cheapo phone that was on Tmobiles list of "Acceptable" trade in phones, and used that one to get them to pay my Cancellation Fee. they gave me 10 bucks for the phone.
Then, I sold my Sprint HTC One Max for $385.00 to someone, so I made out big time on that deal; remember, once you cancel your Sprint account, you then OWN the Sprint Phone, so if you can sell it on Ebay or somewhere and make MORE than what Tmobile will give you for it, you can make a nice chunk of change.
Also, when you get your FINAL bill from sprint, its much faster to scan it/take a picture of it, and upload it on the T-mobile site directly to them; if you take it to the store, and they send it in, it might add a few days/weeks to your approval and reciept of the MasterCard Gift card.
Mine took 4 weeks and one day to come to me after I scanned it in and uploaded it to them.
If you bring it to the store, and go that route, it takes 6-8 weeks.

you can call the tmobile store and ask them how much any phone might be worth, or, I think their website gives an approximate amount you would get on a trade in.
Obviously, you always get more selling a phone on ebay/Craiglist than you ever would on a trade in, but some folks dont want to bother selling them, and just trade it in and are done with it..
BTW, my wife and son traded their M7's in, and got 100 bucks each for them; when we bought them from Sprint, we only paid 49, so even trading them in we made a little $$ :good:

So if you were to cancel your whole account you'd get $1400 (350 x 4) alone just for the ETFs. It's $350 per line, not account.
I just traded my Nexus 5 in for the M8 today and they gave me $135. I cold have sold it to a company that buys them for $200, but oh well. I probably could have gotten a little more even if I cut out the middle man, but Nexus devices are already cheap enough as it is.
Well if they wanted to give me 120 or so I'd be tempted to just go ahead and trade them in. Just when I spoke with whoever it was on the online chat for t-mobile, they only were offering 85, which is significantly low that I would take the time and effort to sell one myself if I could.
Lol. Has anyone traded in a rooted device to t mobile? Just wondering if they check before I go through the hassle of unrooting 2 devices. I know somebody has. Lol.

if its for a "jump" then dont bother, as long as it starts, thats all they care about.
as a matter of fact, I have also returned/replaced under warranty with them phones that were rooted, and once again, they didnt care one bit; I didnt tell them they were rooted, and they didnt ask, but there was no problem getting a replacement..
I work for tmobile. When you want your contract paid for you can pretty much trade in any phone in. It doesn't have to even turn on. Obviously if it doesn't then you won't get and trade in value but tmobile will still pay your efts as long as you do trade in a phone, buy a new phone and port in your number. They pay up to 5 lines per account.
