I have a Hero, should I buy a Desire? - Desire General

I have a GSM Hero with Android 1.6 and I'm thinking about buying a Desire with 2.1. I don't like flashing roms because there's always little bugs and things so I just prefer the stock ones. The price I'm getting on the Desire is $600 US brand new. The money isn't really an issue but I'm trying to decide if spending it is justifiable or if I'd just be wasting money on something that's basically the same as what I already have. What do you all think?

here look for your self,
The good: Epic customizability; well-designed home screen widgets with live updates; easy-to-use keyboard; convenient Android Market for apps; multitouch capability; Flash support; 3.5-millimeter headphone jack; Facebook integration.
The bad: Sluggish at times; Flash video is dodgy; no easy way to back up and restore; button and menu overkill.
The bottom line: If you can stand the Hero's occasional sluggishness, it's a fantastic smartphone packed with great features. We like its distinctive looks, and its innovative user interface brings Android much closer to being as fun and good-looking as the iPhone OS, while being far more customizable. Occasional lag and Android's rough edges mean it's not quite an iPhone killer, but it's definitely fighting in the same class.
HTC Desire
Previously known as the HTC Bravo, the Desire is essentially the Nexus One with HTC Sense. The sleek smartphone offers all the same specs as the N1, including a 3.7-inch AMOLED multitouch screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and Android 2.1, but utilizes HTC's Sense user experience rather than the standard Android skin.
This means you now get access to HTC's widgets, including some new ones like a revamped widget that shows a list view of all your mail instead of just one message. The Agenda widget also now displays your whole agenda on the screen, and like the HTC HD2, you get a weather widget right on the home screen that automatically displays the current conditions based on your location.
There are also some hidden goodies as well. In the browser, you can now do a long-press over some text to bring up a selection bar. This allows you to select a word that you can then look up in the dictionary or in Wikipedia. You can also select a whole paragraph to send to Google Translate to, well, translate. One other notable change is the optical joystick (a One & Co contribution) that replaces the trackball.

That's quite a predicament...
I wouldn't give up on your Hero just yet. It's still very capable and can probably do everything the current crop of devices can.
I would hold out until the next generation of devices. Why? What I'm about to say is known to induce drooling, so be prepared...
Dual-core 1.2 Ghz CPU
How sexy would that be? On a phone!
That being said, I wouldn't mind another Desire owner in the community!

Dual-core 1.2 Ghz CPU Oh i can not wait, hope HTC makes a 4.3 super amoled devices with 1gb ram and 512 nand memory that would be a sweet phone

1. Depends on the price.
2. Hero can now be officially upgraded to 2.1
3. I jumped from a G1 to a Desire. Payed 380 euros for it (unlocked, unbranded). Worth EVERY cent.
* superb screen (large, responsive, high resolution, great colors)
* very (VERY) speedy
* nice looking, great build quality (2 months old, not a single scratch, looks like new, not using any protection)
Bottom line: the Desire is a superb device, probably the best HTC has ever made, but if I had a Hero I would wait for the next one (slide keyboard?!). Problem is we don't know if there would be one this year. Tough decision.

thats why i think this will be for tablets only but again i rather raw performance over battery life

If you're in the US make sure your network supports the Desire's. Some people have complained as they never checked and they get stuck with 2G only!

I was having a original Hero before my Desire and I must say the Desire is 10000 nicer and feels at least 1000 times as fast!
Much clearer screen, bigger and with that easier to handle it.
Only negative is the battery which is as weak as the hero's.
At the end of the day, I would always change the hero against the desire again

NO! Dont buy it!

I had a Hero as well. And I got a desire. And the desire is much much nicer imho.
The better screen in combination with the speed is well worth the upgrade.
If however, you don't need the speed you can always wait for the next flagship Android device from HTC. And start saving money already
But not for a moment did I ever regret getting the desire after my hero.
My Desire is currently in some 'repairs' because of the pinkish screen (I thought let's just send it to HTC and see what happens), but I'm back at my hero now and really miss the desire!
Oh... how I miss the speed and screen. And how do I NOT miss the trackball that works on its own

October timeframe sounds about right. It doesn't sound like enough of an upgrade for me to worry about it, so I guess I'll skip that generation and wait for the next.

damn aluminium body <3 shame about the too big screen, though it be prob possible to port some of the stuff from it to our desires
I just read that on another site and considering I just bought my Desire online yesterday (so it isn't here yet), it wasn't be best news item to read.
I didn't really want a 4.3" screen though (especially if it's pentile...), and while the aluminium body sounds great, none of the other changes are appealing enough to me to worry about.
I know it happens all the time in the tech world. But I hate the feeling I get when something newer and shinier comes out and I can't get it. Especially when its a "better" specced model of a phone I already own.
P.S I know the phone isn't out yet and is only a rumour, but don't you guys sometimes feel the same?
Think of it as the GSM, 3G-only, version of the EVO 4G that everyone has been asking for. The aluminum body addition is nice.
4.3" too big
I like this present device enough... don't need an upgrade until things improve considerably more, which I'm not expecting till March-June 2011. The only currently outstanding issue for me is memory space.
-----------------------------------

It's not really too much of an upgrade. Better camera and in built memory. There will be better stuff to come than this for sure.
Looks like HD2 on steroids with Android. I suppose it will have LCD and if they manage to squeeze it in smaller body then HD2, but with bigger battery it would be great.
i think im gonna cry, simply better than the desire
Ah don't worry about it, it's not as if it's life and death is it.
theres always going to be something better coming out.
Get what you need, and not whats new on the streets
I was slightly underwhelmed to be honest...
Specs are great, everything is "desirable" apart from the size of the device as i personally think 4.3" screen is too big - owned the Touch HD2 but sold it for the Desire as it was too big for me, especially with a leather case

How is it better? Same processor, possibly similar RAM and most likely running Sense 2.1 or getting 2.2 at the same time as the current Desire. An aluminium body doesn't make a phone and more likely than not it will be in some sort if case anyway.
The rest of the specs are a natural evolution of things though that screen is getting close to tablet territory for me. I think the Desire is a great phone the way it is though a Hummingbird processor and PowerVR GPU would be certainly welcome.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
There's not really much in the way of specs increase though, same processor means it won't have increased performance...
More onboard storage is handy, but not as essential as it was thanks to apps2SD. A bigger screen without a resolution change doesn't really interest me, the Desire seems about the right size as it is. No interest in a slightly improved camera.
Pretty underwhelming for a 'Desire HD'.
Coming from a HD2 I am not jealous it has a bigger screen lol.. Only thing that would get me jealous was if it had 4G and a faster CPU, which it doesn't. Until then, it can have a bigger screen, 720p recording and what not, I couldn't really care less lol, we have custom roms with 720p recording anyway so that one is already irrelevant. I love my Desire so much more because it doesn't take my entire hand to use and because it just works like a phone should (Unlike HD2). Anyone who is thinking "oh crap I just got my Desire" you have an awesome phone. Enjoy it and stop worrying about new versions lol (Until a sort of EVO 4G comes out here, then ill join the club haha)
What i find to be so disappointing is that they aren't upgrading the CPU! I mean cmon HTC look at what Samsung and Motorola have coming out. Not to mention the fact that the Snapdragon's GPU is pretty poor compared to samsung/moto. The earlier rumors stated that the Ace would have a dual core @ 1.5Ghz, what happened to that?!?

I really can't see any benefit whatsoever in having a CPU with those sort of specs in a phone at the moment.

[Q] incredible or droid x

As the title says which one? Presently, I have the incredible rooted and enjoying it very much. I upgraded my daughters phone to the droid x. This is her first smartphone and she's always been used to smaller phones. She commented that the x was big for her, so I said that I "might consider" trading if she wanted. But, I just don't know. I value opinions on this site, and rooted my phone with the help of people on this site. In fact, I quit looking at other forums because the help here has always been on target. So, come on and give me your opinions. Thanks
My co-worker has one...Seems very big and clunky to me. The actual buttons on the bottom make it feel outdated and the Moto Blur interface or whatever it's called seems a little slow in some respects. I know a lot of people don't like Sense but its way better than the Moto interface.
I almost picked the Droid X over the Incredible a couple weeks ago. But all I had to do was look at that washed-out screen on my friend's X and that made my choice a lot easier. The Incredible's screen, whether it's the AMOLED or SLCD (mine is SLCD), is simply amazing!
you ask this in the incredible forum - people will tell you to get the incredible (like me)

Astute reply - Goos3y.
Yet the elephant in the room not being mentioned is that the X isn't really fully rooted.
As such, there's only so much modding/tweaking that can be done, unlike the Dinc, which is fully unlocked, and flush with mods/tweaks at the most base levels possible.
Good point. I was going to mention that but I got the impression there wasn't going to be much modding done on the phone anyway.

IMO the only reason why people look at the Droid X is because of the huge screen.
Now 3.7 inches is not too small either..it's still above average. It's bigger than the low and mid-range Android phones. It's bigger than an iphone (3.5) and it's a hell of a lot bigger than my old storm (3.25).
The incredible's screen is far superior (especially the AMOLED imo). I'd rather have ridiculously dark blacks and vibrant colors just to sacrifice some time out in the sun which is going to make any phone look like crap anyways, even though it's worse on the incredible. The incredible's SLCD is better than the DX's screen as well. The DX just looks washed out and ugly if you've been using an incredible for a long time.
Despite what people say the RSS is very similar for both, I've done some side-by-side tests, the HTC just has problems reported the bars correctly.
The droid x is UGLY. Extra lips, old fashioned buttons, IMO it's an horrendous phone. The EVO is what a 4.3 inch phone should look like.
Also like others have mentioned the Inc is "hackable". With regards to the DX you can root it and that's about it. Any of the custom ROMs for it (I think there's like one?) are slow and not full replacement obviously.
Out of the box, the incredible is MUCH smoother than the DX's "fake motoblur".
Other than the ability to resize widgets..Sense > motoblur
Hardware specs are almost equal. 512 RAM, 8MP camera, 720p recording. Everyone thinks the OMAP 1 Ghz was going to be faster than the 1 Ghz snapdragon but from the benchmarks I've seen they're about the same or if anything the QSD8650 is faster. Please show me some benchmarks if you want to say that TI's implementation is better than Qualcomm's.
In almost every category the incredible beats the DX. EXCEPT in screen size, which could be either a pro or con considering the DX is, imo a poor implementation of 4.3 inches.
Not going to defend the DX per se, but I will say the physical buttons are actually better. (anyone who is playing a game and swipes too low on the screen only to be bumped out of the game because they hit one of the capacitive buttons will agree) The hdmi output is a nice bonus and the screen size is very nice for movies.
I personally like my amoled screen on the dinc... but that is rather subjective I think. Not everyone likes "real" black. ;-)
Having said all that... my biggest gripe on the DX (and my wife's D2, which is the same UI and proc) is the motoBlur-ish UI. Dispise some of the quirky and illogical changes from stock and loath the buried-menu concept with some settings they have. (completely an m$ trait that should not be on these phones) The occasional lag is (by my observation) from the proc clocking down so low on idle. (I've measured below 300 mhz on many occasions) It takes a split second to ramp up where the dinc on stock kernel (and most custom) does not clock so low and so "feels" faster. I've seen the same lag on dinc kernels that clock that low, I just think sense is not as 'heavy' and so is not as pronounced.
Just food for thought on anyone still considering between these phones. Having been in the bowels of the dinc and both the newer moto phones I think it really comes down to moto's vs. htc's custom android... if you root and flash to stock android then the hardware is the only thing you're worried about, but if not... IMO htc/sense is king for UI.

[Q] Would you recommend the G2?

Hello,
I have been wanting to replace my bricked Galaxy S with one of the below smartphones:
- T-Mobile G2
- Nexus One
- HTC Leo/HD2
- Nexus S
The requirements for my selection include:
- The ability to function under the AWS 1700/2100 frequency
- The ability to utilize MicroSD storage (Nexus S fails in this category)
- Have a reasonably good/congenial screen size and resolution
- Have a variety of custom ROMs and modifications
- The ability to use LED notifications
- Have a good build and be considerably capable, perdurable and dependable in terms of both hardware and software (unrelenting to software defects such as bricking, and hardware flaws).
I would be very grateful if you, the owners of the G2, would kindly reflect upon your overall experiences with your device and inform me of the phones pros and cons. I would also be thankfully open to any recommendations regarding my selection.
Thank you very much.
Okay bro i have both G2 and a Nexus S... I like both phones but in my own opinion i think the nexus S is kinda better. I love Pure stock android
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Pros:
Great keyboard
Can use the LED (only if rooted...unless there an app for that)
Cons:
The loose hinge
Screen wobbles due to the screen
The back cover can start peeling its silver metal finish
The matte finish all around the phone can change color over time. (fixable with a case/ i prefer a clear case to show off its sexiness while still being protected)
Using a case causes the matte finish to chip off very tiny pieces. -___-
I kinda want a mytouch4g. I'm not a keyboard user...
You should wait because Galaxy SII, hTc Pyramid, and other great devices are coming out. I suggest you wait a little longer
I don't find the necessity to buy a dual-core phone. I am buying these phones because of their great development also, something that the Galaxy S line lacks.
I personally love HTC Sense UI also, therefore leaning my decision towards buying HTC branded phones. I also want the phones to be reasonably priced (under 450 or so), unlike the new dual cores which may cost more than 600$.

The only reason I got a G2 is because it was free on tmobile.com last month..
Pros:
fast for 800mhz
Keyboard is great (3 quick keys come in handy)
@ and www./.com key is great
Decent size screen
Camera qual is good
4G network
Easily rooted and good custom roms
Hinge isn't as bad as people make it out to be
Froyo is cool for stock
Cons:
Preloaded google apps suck (root to remove)
Battery life (stock)
Network Card isn't that great for 4g service
4rows on keyboard rather than 5 (non dedicated numbers)
Micro-USB port isn't in the best spot
MicroSD slot under battery is annoying
Camera hardward button is a tad laggy
LED is only white (track pad)
Track pad isn't the greatest
Screen wobble is easily fixed by keeping the sides of ur index fingers placed on
the screen edges.
No sense but romable!
The hidden memory lmao
Id recommend moving away from tmobile altogether.
The evo shift is better than this on sprint. Or get a dual core phone
It looks like I have no other option but to go for the HD2. I want to use the phones on Mobilicity/Wind's AWS frequency here in Canada, with their cheap unlimited plans costing a maximum of 45$. Therefore, because the Nexus S has no Ext. SD slot and both Nexus' are equally expensive when bought without a contract, i will have to opt for either the HD2 or the G2; which in this case melodicjunkie's review of the G2 deprecates the device.
The fact that the HD2 is versatile and can run WP7 and Android (Sense, Cyanogen, Gingerbread, Honeycomb) makes it a more worthy selection. However there is some quality of the G2 which still attracts me to it.
I'd go for the Desire HD if it would run on AWS frequency, however I must sigh because it does not.
The G2 is a newer phone than the HD2, so it runs a lot better, especially since it runs Android natively, which the HD2 just really can't compete in terms of actual performance. I have both phones right now, so I speak from experience.
HD2 Pros:
Screen size is sexy, but can be too big for some people at 4.3"
Can run WinMo, WP7, Android, Meego, Ubuntu. Lots of variety.
Lots of development going on, but only a handful for each OS are quality in my opinion.
Cons:
No trackpad/trackball
Older processor
Android is not as smooth as on the G2
No hardware camera button
Boot times are ridiculously long compared to the G2
G2 Pros:
Nearly stock Android 2.2
Newer processor runs faster at 800Mhz than HD2 at 1Ghz
Rooted, the phone can be OC'd ridiculous amounts
Clockspeed for clockspeed, G2 always beats HD2 on all benchmarks
Physical keyboard is one the best I've ever used
Trackpad does its job
Camera button
Not as much dev work as the HD2, but it's growing and it is quality work
CM support. Nuff said.
Cons:
Cannot charge with the phone off. Always goes into recovery. It's annoying.
Trackpad gets a bit wonky under direct incandescent light
Google bloatware, though some of it I do actually use
Hinge is loose, but it doesn't bother me and the screen doesn't wiggle on mine
Not very many LED colors to choose from, even when rooted
Wish it were a 5 row keyboard like the G1
Battery life kinda sucks stock, but rooted, it is greatly improved
Wish the screen were 4", but it is okay where it is
Overall, I began using the G2 daily once I got it and rooted it with CM. Haven't looked back since. The G2 outperforms the HD2 on all aspects for me. It just seems to have a more premium feeling to it because of the extra metal accents on the front of the phone. It feels more solid and seems like it can take more abuse than the HD2 due to a smaller screen size.
Hope this helps
The HD2 is outdated and slow.. lol @tazz9690 = if the hd2 boot time is slower than that's sad because the G2 boot time (non rooted) is sloowww lol.
As for recovery charge, that's only when rooted but yes that is annoying.
The G2 is perfectly fine for 100dollars contract.. the highest id pay for this phone (contract or not) is
150 USD. Maybe 200 if I didn't already know how to root and it were rooted. For 0 dollars with contract it was literally a steal, but let's just say if the Evo shift was the same deal ida got that instantly.
Don't get the slow HD2.
If you want tmobile that bad get the mytouch 4 for the front cam.. no keyboard but so what?
Or you can wait for the sidekick 4g (sarcasm) although 1ghz sidekick! Lmao
I actually had the HD2. I currently have the G2 and the Nexus One.
I'd advise against the HD2. I'm currently running the Nexus One with Miui which will partition the sdcard on it own to allow more apps. The first time I used the Nexus One with CM7 I realized that not all my apps from the G2 were gonna fit the Nexus One. The N1 has a very low internal memory as appose to the G2. Again, Miui roms auto partition your sdcard to allow more apps to fix without the hassle of moving them over manually. You can manually partition the sdcard to allow more apps on CM7.
I really like the Nexus One (just bought it). I'm currently using the N1, and what I really like about it is that mostly all types of roms, sense, stock android, CM7, and Miui work flawless.
Keyboard on the G2 is awesome. You can't go wrong with a G2 or an N1.
I never used the N1. I wanted it when it came out but never got it. The N1 is very stable and sleek as for what I've seen and for what I've been told.
Id go with the G2 over the N1. The g2 had a baby and N1 was born.. or the N1 is the younger brother.. either direction you wanna go, get the G2 over the N1.
I'm still saying wait for a dualcore Tmobile..
The phone I really want is the Incredible S

Even though the N1 came before the G2, so it would literally be impossible for that outcome to be possible. It's more like, the N1 had a son and it turned out to be Chuck Norris. Major upgrade XD
Get a MyTouch4G. Fast processor, 768MB RAM, FFC, lots of development, easy to root. Looks better in real life and feels great in the hand. The black one has soft touch rubber around the sides while the others are just plastic so go for black. You wont regret it, definitely an underrated phone.
It is essentially the DesireHD with a smaller screen (3.8" but still the same resolution).
It meets all your criteria. I think you will be pleased.

I'm thinking this would be a great choice for you. I picked G2 over it because of the keyboard, but either phone is a great choice. MT4G has a little bit better specs though, since it has more ram and it's CPU is clocked 200mhz higher at stock (that's easily fixed if you root either phone). I'm more than happy with the G2; every phone has it's quirks, and that's why there are so many on the market. IMO this is the best phone on the market with a keyboard, although I haven't tried the Evo Shift yet (same internal hardware as G2/DZ though).
If my G1 were still functional, I'd be using it today even though I would've been due for an upgrade in October..

Of these choices the G2 is what I'd pick but as others have suggested I'd actually recommend the MyTouch 4G.
The G2 keyboard is not that good (compared to the G1 anyways) and thanks to Swype I rarely use it. Since the MT4G doesn't have a keyboard you have more case options.
MT4G is faster
MT4G has physical buttons for home, back & menu unlike the lame soft-keys found on the G2 and most other phones today.
Both have decent custom ROM support

I had a premonition I was going to be asked this question. hah!
I am simply going to wait for the HTC Pyramid or for the Incredible S to decrease in price, then I will make me selection. It feels slightly awkward to purchase a N1 or an HD2 as it would feel somewhat like a downgrade from my previous powerhouse phone, the Galaxy S.
Although I must say that I find it extremely difficult and frustrating to wait for the later smartphone releases (Incredible S, Pyramid). Therefore I am truly lost as to whether I should buy an HTC phone compatible with AWS now, or whether I should wait for future dual-core HTCs.

Look, if you have a phone now: what's the rush? Who knows what kind of bugs these new phones will have. Id rather risk buying a release date kick ass phone, than to buy outdated hardware. Even the sidekick 4g is better than the hd2.. and the sidekick 4g is a freaking joke!
get the pyramid.. I'm getting it to replace the g2, that must tell u sumtin...
Cmon, 8mp cam, front facing one as well.. stocked 1.2 ghz (I do that rooted on g2), you can. only imagine the rooting capabilites on the pyramid.. 2.3ghz overclock?? Maybe, because of the dual core processor and ram..
And to top it off, a phone like that seems odd to have a physical keyboard, which looks sick! The sleak design is amazing, especially the back.

[Q]Desire Z or Desire HD/Inspire

The Desire Z was my first ever android phone after coming from iPhones (2G>3G>3GS>DZ) and it's definitely won me over iOS (aside from the appstore, but the android market is exploding). After switching around phones, I want to find one that will satisfy me for a long period of time, and right now it's between the Desire Z or Desire HD.
To the people who have both a Desire Z and a Desire HD/Inspire, which do you prefer/which do you think is the better phone in general? Disregard anything stock, and assume the most you could do with both of them rooted. (Define them on terms of everything: Dev support, development, screen size, screen display, battery, performance, general feel/use, etc).
Off-topic question, but if anyone knows, is it possible to use THD apps on the Desire Z? (ie. Fruit Ninja THD)
If it ain't got a kb it ain't better than the dz! Ill never own another "bar" style device, depends on personal preference but I looooove having a full kb. (Fat fingers)

I have the DZ, brother has the DHD.
Personally, they're both the same phone. Only differences:
DHD: 4.3" screen, last-gen 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, Al unibody chassis, dual LED flash, 8MP camera
DZ: 3.7" screen, current-gen 800MHz Snapdragon CPU, physical keyboard, single LED flash, 5MP camera, dedicated camera button
Of the two, I would get the DZ. The CPU is more efficient, the 3.7" screen isn't too big but isn't too small. Physical keyboard ensures that you have 100% screenspace for whatever you are looking at rather than having the Onscreen keyboard take up 50%+ screen space when typing. Despite having a single LED flash and a 5MP camera, it easily compares with the DHD's dual flash and 8MP stills.
If you have the older firmware, both are very easy to root. Once you have root and custom rom's on them, they're essentially the same phone save for the physical keyboard. That would be the deciding factor in choosing IMO.
Have fun!
Oh the DHD uses last gen snapdragon? Was under the impression that they were both 2nd gen. That pretty much decides it then LOL, thanks. Hows the dev on the DHD compared to DZ?

yep, the DHD uses the last-gen Snapdragon CPU. That's why it's stock clocked at 1GHz while the DZ is clocked at 800MHz and it still keeps up while being power efficient.
I don't hang around the DHD section too much, but my brother seems to be happy with them. But then again, what kind of Dev is not helpful or nice on XDA? haha

Wrong. The CPU on the Desire HD is the same generation CPU as the Vision, using the same 45 nm process (the "older" Snapdragons use 65 nm). And both use the same Adreno 205 GPU. I can't find any benchmarks comparing the 2, but my money would (obviously) be on the DHD being faster. Not sure if its as overclockable as the Vision, though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(system_on_chip)
Since the OP is an iPhone user for a few generations, I'd say he probably won't care about the hardware keyboard. And personally, with Swype, I've found myself using the hardware kb less and less. For my next phone I will very possibly go without the hardware kb. And that's coming from a formerly stubborn hardware kb proponent, this being my 3rd smartphone with one. Personally, I find myself typing just as fast (maybe even faster) using Swype, without the hassle of having to open the keyboard and turn the phone sideways. Not to mention the weight and thickness savings you get by ditching the keyboard.
Add in the faster CPU, and larger screen, and I would tend to lean toward the Desire HD, myself. There are a couple other minor considerations, like I read some reviews mentioning the volume rocker on the DHD felt cheaper, and the speaker is supposedly a bit better on the Vision. But these seem like minor quibbles, overall.
It all comes down to personal preference in the end, of course. Try to play around with both, if you can. Its mostly about the form factor. Whichever one feels better, is the one for you.
I can't get my hands on a DHD to play around with, which is why I'm asking fellow XDA members for their opinions. Having a keyboard doesnt bother me, it's nice to have one, but I wouldn't be hindered if I didn't have one. The deciding factors are pretty much which phone will last me longer in the long run. Which would hypothetically be supported longer by devs, which would be better for general use (call quality, performance, etc), and which would physically last longer (I would assume the DHD would last longer, though, since it doesn't have a hinge). I've also read that the battery life on the DHD is horrible, is this true?
Can't speak personally on the DHD. But comments I've read say you can typically get a full day using the "usual" Android battery saving tips (turn down screen brightness, turn off WiFi when not in area of a WiFi network, turn off GPS when not in use, etc.). Charging overnight is pretty much par for the course with any smartphone nowadays, with any moderate use. Of course, it all depends on how you use your phone. A larger screen will mean shorter battery life. But with the right amount of tweaking of the settings, you should be fine.
In theory, a phone with a slide/hinged keyboard would be easier to break. More moving parts means more things that can possibly fail, with failure of the ribbon cable between the screen and keyboard being a somewhat occasional point of failure for slider/hinge type phones. But this is my 3rd HTC phone with a hinge/slider. My Tilt2/Rhodium is 1.5 years old, and my Tilt/Kaiser is 3.5 years old, and they are both in good shape. HTC builds these phones pretty well. Take decent care of it, and it should last a while.

Thinking about buy?

For months I've been trying to upgrade. (At&t straight talk etc.) I was going to buy an old my touch 4g slide put it on straight talk but right now its hard to find. So the HTC one v is it worth it (cdma version) would I enjoy it more the I enjoyed my ov? Do you think more roms will be made? Tough decision seeing as I work at lil ceazers not making much lol. So big question is it a good phone?

I know there's some awesome devs like jmz working in the CDMA side, but until htc releases the source it'll be slow going.
I came to the OneV from an optimus v, and i love this phone way more. Even if you look at just the hardware, it's a big step up (or at least it feels like it).
If you're planning on doing straight talk, that's GSM not CDMA. Only the virgin mobile OneV is CDMA.
Would you say its worth the upgrade then?

I was waiting for the price to go down, but I bit the bullet based on 3 things:
1. the screen! one look at the fonts and I was in love!
2. ICE CREAM SANDWICH!
3. The development! In a span of 3 months this community/devs have done a wonderful job in showcasing the future of this phone!
I don't want to come off as too negative about this phone, as it is very beautiful and I would probably buy it again. So just be aware that this post is mostly focusing on the negatives.
While single core 1ghz isn't the fastest around, it is fast enough for an android phone. In fact I noticed no significant speed difference to my 1,5ghz dualcore Sensation. And HTC even released a 600mhz phone this year, the desire C. In my experience the utility of more CPU power in android phones maxes out at around 1 ghz. More CPU power and screen real estate just means lower battery life. And the battery life on this thing is pretty much the best you're going to find in the ICS camp. With many of the big-and-fast alternatives, if you're actually using it you're not going to take that many steps away from the charger.
That being said, at the moment I'm slightly pissed off about some aspects of this phone. That's mostly because it feels like a repackaged 2010 phone. It is very pretty with the aluminum unibody and all, compared to this even new high end devices look cheap and plasticy. But you have to like the design, because it's not the most cost-effective hardware. There are a few year-old android phones around with the same hardware, that you can get used for like 100 bucks less, and most of them come with a full list of polished ICS custom roms. With the One V you pay extra for the design and for getting ICS out of the box. And that's not even of much use if you're capable of installing a custom rom.
I bit the bullet because I was running out of other options that fit my preferences. I wanted a three-button setup, and less than 4", and pretty much all alternatives in that camp seem to have some crippling flaw, like crappy battery life or nonexistent GPS capabilities or a really mirrory screen. So far I haven't noticed any flaws on the V, except for the inexplicable button and usb-plug placement, and that the front speaker is really quiet. But most importantly, since it's a new phone, and a non-high-end device, custom rom availability is only just starting to build up. For example there is still no way to get real status bar toggles, which my first smartphone from 2009 with Cyanogen 6 could do.
In the end it comes down to whether you like the design, or whether you care about raw specs more. I'm just not as interested in counting cpu cores, so it's fine for me. Don't get me wrong, it runs perfectly smooth. But it is just 400mhz up from a Legend.
If you like the nose and the aluminum unibody, and prefer a not-too-huge phone, then go for it. But if you are looking for the most price-effective hardware, then buy something used with the same capabilities. You just have to be aware that you pay extra for the fancy design here.
When I was buying I was between One V and Samsung Galaxy S advance...they were similary priced on my carrier.
I choose One V becouse of this comunity and development going on around ICS at the moment, and "S advance" is stuck on 2.3.6. without much hacks to choose.
I was wrong anyway. ICS look great but it lag on this phone like hell. Anyone buying should realy try it first. I mean my girlfriend's crappy LG optimus L3 is a ferrari compared to this. And it gets worse...HTC specification is a LIE. True specs are 2gb ROM/ 1gb user available, cca 365 mb RAM ?!?
Camera looks more like 3MP. with 5Mp mode you get only bigger sized pictures and vid's but cannot capture more detail...like upscaled 3mp camera.
ONE V specs look like leftovers from desire series with a new outer shell. If I've got 2nd chance to choose a phone I'd rather go for a used Desire series and wait for a price drop on good ICS phones simply becouse desire is snappier and One V is slooow.
Hope this helps

It's android 4.03 under that sense ui. Find someone who has older android phone 2.3.x,even a bad one, and compare. It's true that you only feel that lag in multitasking and browsing...like pinch to zoom etc...but also scroll between screens is a big delay

For me cm9, nonsense rom and even suprimo 4.1 made it respond faster but still not even comparable to 2.3.x devices
the HTC One V is a HORRIBLE PHONE! You will NOT be able to hear anyone you talk to, mine has been like this since new and all sound lvls are maxed...im forced to use the crappy loud speaker....i will never suggest a HTC phone to anyone since im locked into a 3 year with this crappy phone..
i guess it all comes from what phone you come from and your budget. i came from a huawei ascend (junk) i love this phone! My wife had a huawei ascend 2 (junk) and i got her on of these and she loves it. I am rooted and running a custom rom, she is rooted and running stock with no bloat. i am sure there are many phones out there that are better than this one, but for our carrier and budget, we can't beat it!
