Just a quick one - I am using a branded orange desire handset straight out the box (no modifications at all). I have downloaded a few different browsers and to give them a bit of a road test I have been trying to access anything on the iplayer through the url bbc.co.uk/iplayer.
A couple obviously just cannot handle it, but Skyfire for example appears willing to load the programmes but then they get blocked when it tells me 'not available in your area'. Just to confirm I'm bang in the middle of the UK and can access on my desktop pc which is on the same wifi network. I get the same message when trying to access through orange 3g.
I have seen old posts about the now disappeared beebplayer which clearly looks like the decent option if available, but I was just wondering if anyone is getting a feed of any kind through a browser (not worried about quality at this stage) or if the error message I'm getting is consistent with everyone else.
Live tv feeds through m.tvcatchup.com work through 3g but not my wifi for some reason (have tried all of the above with wep, wap and no security at all btw).
Although I've read in a few places that theres no way of getting the iplayer on desire right now, I thought the flash capabilities of skyfire would allow it, even if very poor quality, which has left me wondering if my router is actually the knackered piece of kit here?
Any ideas - sorry, I know it's a bit of a long one.
to maybe put this question a bit simpler now I've had some sleep - can anyone out there view, for example the bbc iplayer, through any browser installed on their desire? Or should I not be concerned by being told I am not in the UK because this is the error message its spewing out because it basically can't handle iplayer at the moment under any browser?
There is no way yet to watch on iPlayer through the browser on the Desire.
If you install android 2.2 froyo you can install flash 10.1 beta from the market, but still iPlayer is completely awful quality, and totally unwatchable.
Your best bet is beebplayer, which is pretty bad quality, just google beebplayer.apk and download it.
thanks samac

I just received my SX66 and so far am very impressed, a big difference coming from a smartphone and a lot of getting used to, but so far so good.
After searching here and other places I am still having one issue. Each time I attempt to go to a wap protocol site I either cannot pull the site up at all, or in a few cases am redirected to the html site. (I am assuming the site is thinking that I am using a regular browser) Is there a setting change I can make to change this? I mean with wifi it is no problem but with gprs, html will take forever and sometimes it is nice to have the screen rendering that wap offers especially on the go.
what ever happend to the old days of web dev guys detecting the screen resolution prior to displaying a page. WAP sites are good, but the heck with this full page flash screen image filled web pages that pop up on my mini browser.
worst of all is the web sites of these devices (iMate being one) that insist on displaying their new and improved aka slower and larger graphics on these devices. you'd think these of all sites would do it right.
Hi
Just discovered this excellent forum.
What a difference 4 years makes, have gone from a 2006 Sony Erickson W810 walkman phone to this and its just a little bit different shall we say.
I'm still playing with it. trying to get it set up etc. Have tried to bluetooth across my phone contacts from the Sony (before the number transfer takes place on 6 April) and message comes up saying that the Desire is awaiting 'acceptance of the transfer). Symbols have appeared on the top of the Desire.
Where do i go to accept the contact list transfer?
Any other 'top tips' woulod be greatly appreciated.
Can you also watch 'live' TV i.e. Sky sports through the Sky player.
I read on UK hot deals forum how to speed up the 3G, this seems to be working.
Other probably stupid questions:
On a PC you would set up a firewall, virus protection for the internet etc. Do you not have to do this when accessing the net via a phone? What happens with span, hackers etc if you accidentially access 'dodgy sites' shall we say.
Have to say loading apps looks a little complicated for the novice, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
I think I can address a couple of issues, just not the BT issue.
Live TV?
Well, I don't think there's an app for live TV (at least here in the UK). However a site which broadcasts live TV (probably requiring Flash) may work. Though Flash is known not to work great yet so don't get your hopes up. Would love to be wrong on this point though. I saw a friend in Sweden watch live TV on his iPhone with a station specific app, over wifi. Was kinda cool!
No idea what you're talking about with speeding up 3G. Maybe you can share...
Virus/firewall protection?
Ah yes, that old nut. I'm guessing that they break down into 2 groups, one's that scan constantly and one's that scan occasionally. The 1st offers highest protection but requires highest resources and thus few people will use it on mobile devices. The 2nd is more possible and is available.
But then you have the issue of risk. Many argue, in short, there's not enough risk (even though malicious software does exist). There's not enough devices to make it worthwhile (the same arguements of why Macs don't have so many viruses) and even if there are millions of devices running the same software, the proportion of people that have stuff that is worth stealing puts the value even lower.
I'm sure when mobile devices are more integrated, more powerful (though running Google Earth on my desktop a few years back was hard enough, so to see it on my Desire...!) and when they hold/access more valuable data (i.e. more mobile banking and passwords on mobile devices), then the risk will no doubt also increase.
TV Catchup is the place for live tv. like its been said not sure of with the flash as my desire is on charge and i havent tried it yet.
if your old phone can sync contacts to outlook then do that and save the contacts as a csv file.
then go to google mail and import the .csv file
Thats the theory that worked for me. Your best bet is to google search the rest
Updated (officially) my Desire to android 2.2. Some notices and thoughts:
1) Russian keyboard is quite buggy: instead of space after space-button pressing it prints "!", and instead of Enter - "Ъ". This, however, happens only in portrait mode.
2) Messages are now ordered by date ascending. Why?
3) Search replaced with default 2.2 search. It's OK, but why not to stylish it for the Sense theme, like the old one?
4) Messages listing still lags, so does the main menu, when scrolling to the very bottom.
Hi guys,
i've looked around a little, and so far have found a few issues with 2.2
The idea behind this thread is to collect them all (POKEMON! xD).
When i think the list is complete, i will send a support ticket to htc about it.
So far noticed:
General Issues:
- Battery Drain
- dropping wifi connections after time
- random crashs when adjusting camcorder settings
- status bar gsm icon doesn't change to H in hsdpa areas, if coming from gprs area
- headphones aren't recognised if device is rebooted with them plugged in
- bug with russian keyboard in portait mode ("!" typed instead of Space and "э" instead of Enter)
- inoperative camera (not everyone)
- wifi-tethering glitch (doesn't save settings)
- massive heat while charging
- partly incomplete localization
- some issues with syncing to gmail (please more details!)
Browser:
- laggy panning in browser
- browser launchs to last page visited instead of homepage
Apps:
- the coverflow of the htc music player doesn't load all 5 visible covers (always at least one missing)
- some apps simply shut down, even if they worked fine on 2.1
- paid apps disappearing from market
- video thumbnails pixelated
- music playback doesn't resume after spoken intructions by navigator
- gps localization seems to be much slower now
Post, what you've found, i'll add it. (please tell, how you installed froyo, upgraded, reflashed or some other way)
Thx 4 your help
Seems all paid apps have disappeared from the market for me, including the ones I've already bought
@Cwiis
did you flash a new 2.2 or upgraded from 2.1?
Browser launches (after its been killed) onto the last page you visied, not the homepage.
haven't noticed any of those problems, only problem i had was that it wasnt properly installed the first time. I hear people complaining about battery power but my one week long desire usually holds just fine for 3 days without charge with normal use( wifi, sometimes gps, listening to music etc)
I haven't had any problems with the WiFi. But the web browsing isn't as smooth as used to be when booming in.
One thing I have however noticed is that if I'm in a area of gprs it says g, but when I go to a hsdpa area it still says g. I get the speeds of hsdpa but it says gprs. If I turn of and on the network it then says h.
Works fine from h to g. But won't go g to h even when its on hsdpa.
I'm in o2 in UK. Any one else noticed it.
Paid Apps are there for me. (uk. unbranded)
When watching BBC Iplayer you can't quit out of the playing Flash video, and i had to go to do a FORCE STOP on the browser to get out.
Oh, I was wrong, only two of my paid apps have gone - I guess the phone needs specific activation or something, but Raging Thunder 2 and Pacman Championship Edition have both disappeared for me (even though I've bought them and have both of them installed).

I think you will find that it is probably supposed to do that now. Part of the Android process management is that if an app is killed by the system (or a task killer as it happens!), the state is saved so that when you start up again it is in more or less the same place as it was before it was killed.
I guess that previously it didn't used to save the state, but now it does.
Regards,
Dave
one paid app (radiotime) is missing from the mp. It is still on my phone though...
App share doesnt post to the facebook icon but works ok via friendstream (htc sense)

I had a similar problem, and although I was able to quit the browser, I was then left with a Flash video still playing in the background that I could hear, but not access or see (even going back to the browser). This happened for me after viewing in Full-Screen.
I think I've also found another issue following the update that I don't recall happening before...
If you're listening to music through headphones, then reboot the phone (without unplugging them), when it starts up again it does not recognise that the headphones are plugged in. Consequently if you restart the music, it comes out of the internal speaker.
Unplugging them and plugging them in again fixed this... It does appear to be repeatable though.
I'm not too worried though, I can accept the odd minor issue like these, as so far at least, the benefits of Froyo far outweigh the drawbacks.
(I installed Froyo OTA on an unbranded Orange UK handset.)
1) Unable to sync contact with fb (It does not update pictures, status etc)
2) Something is wrong with the camera. In viewfinder mode everything seems to be overexposed
people at 4pda.ru forum collected this list of bugs in 2.2 desire rom (my approximate translation follows):
bug with russian keyboard in portait mode ("!" typed instead of Space and "э" instead of Enter)
radio heavily degraded. lack of stereo reception (not everyone have this issue)
inoperative camera (not everyone)
applications size display issuer
excessive battery drain
sluggish scrolling in stock browser
wifi-tethering glitch (doesn't save settings)
intense overheating when on charge and during heavy load.
"Phone" application doesn't change its locale when changing system language from Russian to English
(original post is located at _http_://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=162138&view=findpost&p=4928464)
Problems with localization files. Eg. if running Danish locale, names on months are not shown in 3rd party apps, this happens eg. with Smooth Calendar (dev is working on workaround). Instead numbers are shown, but if switching to English locale, there is no problem.
Has been reported to HTC by me and Smooth Calendar dev., let's hope they respond and fix this, with some of the other bugs mentioned in this thread.

from the development section, it wasnt a custom rom tho, just the ota with the hboot removed
Hey, could someone in the UK with a Froyo+Sense ROM point their browser to m.tvcatchup.com and test out a channel for me? I'm consistently getting a stupid icon obliterating my viewing, but no one in the official support forum has mentioned it.
Working fine for me on Desire + LeeDroid 1.8 ROM, watching the news on BBC 2 right now.
Works for me mate (FroYo).
Tried both HQ and LowQ.
Also tried both the Media and Streaming Media Player popup (when I click on a channel it prompts me what player to use).
I don't get that popup! How do you get that?
The icon is basically a white square, with a blue circle inside, and inside the circle is a yellow triangle, with a red tick or check mark at the base of the triangle. Any ideas? It's really annoying!
Here ya go, snaps using the Shoot Me app. You can see what I mean.

I think it is because I have the Gallery.apk installed.
Can't remember the official name but it is the one from the Nexus One.
I get this too. Brand new installed rom all i have done is put my music on and connected to exchange server.
Could this to the fact of having a 'weak signal' I have noticed that it says weak signal at the top when it starts, and this time that icon was at the top left out the way so could be a bug with the tv catchup system rather than anything to do with the phone. I tried connecting to our wireless at work but it can't make a connection to the server to stream the tv.
I actually cannot get my phone to connect to a feed! It pops up with "Unable to connect to server." every time.
Ditto. It worked with 2.1 and doesn't now (for me.) Mobile version I mean.
Struggled in high quality due to weak signal. Yet my ipod touch is fine in high quality. Hmmm strange.
what about changing browser settings so that it possbily sees the phone as an Iphone, ipod etc? surely that could possibly work
Okay I've just wiped my whole phone, all wipes, and install Froyo DeLite r0.5. Not installed any apps yet, it is completely fresh. And I'm still getting that stupid icon! Everytime I log into m.tvcatchup.com and choose any channel. And even when using wifi, connected my router three metres from me, which is attached to a fat 20meg Virgin broadband, and HTC Streaming Media still says 'weak signal'!!!
I no longer believe it is the ROM, something is fubar with TV Catchup. I've started this thread on the official forum:
http://forums.tvcatchup.com/showthread.php?9089-Weird-icon-now-on-every-channel!
Does anyone know of any other RTSP streams to test with? Just to see how HTC Streaming Media app fares with something else?
Hi guys, one thing is that if you are using Froyo you are limiting yourselves to a smaller selection of channels as Froyo supports full flash now. This means you will have the full selection of channels on TVC at http://www.tvcatchup.com/channels.html
Hey guys, as I just posted in the TV Catchup forum, the HTC Streaming Media App is borked. The icon does not appear in Eclair. HTC have cocked up, big time.
Okay, just flashed DJ Droid 1.2 and the icon has finally gone. This is dead weird!!! Why are some Roms giving me the icon, but some not?! Don't get it.
Also still poor signal quality however even on Wifi, but at least now I'm halfway there!
You guys are missing a big point
You don't need to use the mobile version. Download Adobe Flash Player 10.1 from the market and go visit the full tvcatchup site, works like a charm.

It does but it's less convenient and it's not optimised for mobile so you don't get all the full screen goodness.

Of course you get full screen and more importantly you get all the channels compared to 22 on the m.tvcatchup.com site, just save the channels page in your bookmarks, select a channel, loads, double tap, and you are in full screen.. couldn't be simpler !
And if you really want it easier just save the bookmark as an widget on your front screen.
I am aware that there are a number of threads on the subject of the browser crashing since the update to 2.2.
Mine is a bog standard t-mobile desire, unaltered in any way. As others, I have a particular problem with the BBC sports and news websites. Flash related, no doubt.
I am curious as to whether anyone has a) had a response from, HTC (or Adobe) on the subject and/or b) found a permanent solution.
Hard/soft resets make no difference.
As recommended on here, I have adjusted the plugin setting to "on demand" which at least enables me to browse the BBC sports site. I do find quite a few spaces however, I guess where video links should be (there is no option to play shown either).
I have also deleted all data in the Internet application which seemed to provide a temporary solution. For a while I could then browse the site properly, at least until the data built up again. However, this morning, even after clearing data the browser is crashing as I move from the main sport page to the football section (and Wolves aren't doing that badly!!!).
Thanks
Just to add a postscript.
I have been in touch with HTC. They suggested a factory reset. I pointed out that this hadn't worked but did it again. No change. As I soon as I could I went back to the BBC sports site, clicked on football, crash!!
HTC suggested returning my phone but I asked what was the point as this was a software rather than hardware issue.
They have now told me "We have tested this on our devices here in the support centre now and have the same issue. We have passed this to our developers to look at."
Watch this space, I guess. Meanwhile I am off to reload some apps!!
