[Q] Browser Crashing - Any solution? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am aware that there are a number of threads on the subject of the browser crashing since the update to 2.2.
Mine is a bog standard t-mobile desire, unaltered in any way. As others, I have a particular problem with the BBC sports and news websites. Flash related, no doubt.
I am curious as to whether anyone has a) had a response from, HTC (or Adobe) on the subject and/or b) found a permanent solution.
Hard/soft resets make no difference.
As recommended on here, I have adjusted the plugin setting to "on demand" which at least enables me to browse the BBC sports site. I do find quite a few spaces however, I guess where video links should be (there is no option to play shown either).
I have also deleted all data in the Internet application which seemed to provide a temporary solution. For a while I could then browse the site properly, at least until the data built up again. However, this morning, even after clearing data the browser is crashing as I move from the main sport page to the football section (and Wolves aren't doing that badly!!!).
Thanks

Just to add a postscript.
I have been in touch with HTC. They suggested a factory reset. I pointed out that this hadn't worked but did it again. No change. As I soon as I could I went back to the BBC sports site, clicked on football, crash!!
HTC suggested returning my phone but I asked what was the point as this was a software rather than hardware issue.
They have now told me "We have tested this on our devices here in the support centre now and have the same issue. We have passed this to our developers to look at."
Watch this space, I guess. Meanwhile I am off to reload some apps!!

Google Maps no longer functions

I posted before about my phone always starting up in airplane mode (here) after trying to get flash working on Opera.
Well for some reason, that has gone away. YAY!
But now, google maps no longer works. BOOoo!
What happened is that I started it up at the beginning of my weekly road trip, it looked like everything was working but the "Loading" note at the top was persistent AND traffic wasn't loading. If I moved the map around, new sections of the map were being downloaded without a problem. Opera works with no problem.
I then got this error:
Network Unavailable
This application requires a data connection. Please contact your carrier, or visit www.google.com/gmm/configure.html on your computer for more info.
(Error: wininetHttpError [0 12007])
I have had Google Maps die on me before so I keep the latest version on my SD card just in case. I removed Google and reinstalled. Now it doesn't even get to a map and gives the same error message.
Because of my weekly roadtrip, Google Maps is very important to me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
If you are having so many probs why don you just hard reset or even change ROM?
Perhaps that could help.
And don´t forget to vote for Rhodium
Hard reset is always an option but it is such a pain in the ass to reload everything that is working fine now.
As for loading a new ROM, for some reason I am told that I already unlocked my phone when I run the utility. Also, none of the ROMS look (or sound like they perform) all that different from AT&T's stock ROM after the available tweaks.
Scratch hard reset from the list of potential fixes.
Solved.

Importing Phone Contacts to Desire

Hi
Just discovered this excellent forum.
What a difference 4 years makes, have gone from a 2006 Sony Erickson W810 walkman phone to this and its just a little bit different shall we say.
I'm still playing with it. trying to get it set up etc. Have tried to bluetooth across my phone contacts from the Sony (before the number transfer takes place on 6 April) and message comes up saying that the Desire is awaiting 'acceptance of the transfer). Symbols have appeared on the top of the Desire.
Where do i go to accept the contact list transfer?
Any other 'top tips' woulod be greatly appreciated.
Can you also watch 'live' TV i.e. Sky sports through the Sky player.
I read on UK hot deals forum how to speed up the 3G, this seems to be working.
Other probably stupid questions:
On a PC you would set up a firewall, virus protection for the internet etc. Do you not have to do this when accessing the net via a phone? What happens with span, hackers etc if you accidentially access 'dodgy sites' shall we say.
Have to say loading apps looks a little complicated for the novice, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
I think I can address a couple of issues, just not the BT issue.
Live TV?
Well, I don't think there's an app for live TV (at least here in the UK). However a site which broadcasts live TV (probably requiring Flash) may work. Though Flash is known not to work great yet so don't get your hopes up. Would love to be wrong on this point though. I saw a friend in Sweden watch live TV on his iPhone with a station specific app, over wifi. Was kinda cool!
No idea what you're talking about with speeding up 3G. Maybe you can share...
Virus/firewall protection?
Ah yes, that old nut. I'm guessing that they break down into 2 groups, one's that scan constantly and one's that scan occasionally. The 1st offers highest protection but requires highest resources and thus few people will use it on mobile devices. The 2nd is more possible and is available.
But then you have the issue of risk. Many argue, in short, there's not enough risk (even though malicious software does exist). There's not enough devices to make it worthwhile (the same arguements of why Macs don't have so many viruses) and even if there are millions of devices running the same software, the proportion of people that have stuff that is worth stealing puts the value even lower.
I'm sure when mobile devices are more integrated, more powerful (though running Google Earth on my desktop a few years back was hard enough, so to see it on my Desire...!) and when they hold/access more valuable data (i.e. more mobile banking and passwords on mobile devices), then the risk will no doubt also increase.
TV Catchup is the place for live tv. like its been said not sure of with the flash as my desire is on charge and i havent tried it yet.
if your old phone can sync contacts to outlook then do that and save the contacts as a csv file.
then go to google mail and import the .csv file
Thats the theory that worked for me. Your best bet is to google search the rest

Weird Market Problems on Desire

Just got my HTC Desire today and everything is working fine apart from the android market. I have 3 problems:
1) I don't have the paid apps tab only top free and just in. I can see paid apps within the just in section, but not top paid apps.
2) When I clock on the install button I get a blank screen with just the background gui showing for at least 10-20 seconds before the confirmation screen that shows what permissions the app needs is finally shown.
3) Apps install correctly however they never get removed from the "currently downloading" list in the Downloads section of the android market.
I got the phone through virgin mobile and I am currently using a t-mobile sim in it. I have tried doing a factory reset which didn't solve the problem.
Anyone had any similar issues?
Liam
Please search before posting.
Your problems will be solved by removing t-mobile content lock. It can be done through their website or by calling customer service.
One problem will remain though: so far no one can see copy-protected apps because market is not recognizing our build number. It should be solved soon though.
Hi,
The phone actually came from Virgin Mobile, but for the moment I am using my old T-Mobile sim which used to be in my G1 which didn't have any problems with the market. I seem to remember de-activating the content lock when I used the browser for the first time on my g1.
I just checked on my t-mobile account details and I definitely have the content lock turned off.
I still have the same problem with the market, i.e. I get about 20 seconds of blank screen after clicking install before the permission confirmation details come up.
And after an app is installed it still shows in the download section as installing with the grey progress bar and doesn't disappear unless I go to the settings/Applications and clear the cache in download manager, market and force close the market app.
Anyone have any similar problems? I have done a full factory reset three times, still the same problems.
Liam
I just got mine, its a open one unbranded. I can neither connect to gtalk or download apps, both hang. I have read similar problems for the Droid, but the fixes dont work for me.
Also can you connect the device to the internet via the PC, like windows mobile ?
That's odd. My problems were solved by removing content lock.
Does the same thing happen on WiFi? Did you try to restart the device?
Regarding PC to phone tethering, it's not possible over USB. There are guides on how to do it over WiFi though.
Its the same for me : confirmed that content lock is off.
and still have this problem.
On Tmobile, upgraded from G1, same sim.
I get this on wifi or not.
If I restart the device, the Market Place states its installed correctly (like it should do). But installing another shows the same problem.
I've done a Factory Reset via the menu and that did solve it.
And I've just phoned tmo tech support, and they recommend resetting via fastboot.
I'll give that a go later, and post back the results.
Any other ideas?
Its really weird. Yesterday at a different wifi location it worked fine. But again its not working in work. I assume then the downloads are being blocked by the service provider, or the router.
Thats really crap you cannot connect to the internet via the USB cable like in windows mobile. I cant get my data service working either - so in work I have to work.
ok, I did a clear storage from the fastboot menu, I assumed that what he meant, had no effect.
but figured it out!!!!!!
its my gmail/Google account thats the problem! if I reset the phone and created a new account it works fine. log back in as me, bang. back as previously created new account, fine.
1. is this the same for other people?
2. the people who are having this problem, are you all previous Android users?
3. if so, what phone? me was G1.
I will have to raise a bug with android or google on this.
I now also have to ring back tmo and tell them this info, as I'm guessing by his language he want to take the phone back in.

Beware that while most apps like gmail, calendar, contacts, etc work using port 80 (HTTP), both google talk and android market use different ports.
In my school network I can't connect to gtalk or download from market because they block those ports on the firewall.
I previously had a g1 and think the problems I was having had something to do with my gmail account but it seemed to resolve itself after several factory resets.
I am not convinced that the factory reset was what fixed it, I just think it needed a bit of time to sort itself out.
I wonder if having a new device with the same gmail account causes the issue and it takes a while to recognise the new device. though that doesn't really explain the behaviour I was seeing.

I cannot find a way around this.
My google account shows the slowness and install problems, a test/temp/dummy/other account does not, I do not want to change my email address!
So I have emailed Google, see where that gets me.
Anyone know/think-of any other routes?

I am having problems with the Market on my new Desire. I previously had a G1.
1. When I select Downloads tab, it takes about 10 seconds before the loading text is displayed.
2. When selecting something to install, the 1st info page with the install button is displayed but with no info/text/etc, ie only the install button, again about a 10sec wait and the info shows fine.
3. When selecting install, the security confirm page is displayed but is blank, no text or buttons, another 10secs and its displayed.
4. If I actually go to install an app, it correctly redirects me back to the last market list page. From there if I go to Downloads, after the 10sec wait, it always states "installing", even when its finished, and pushed a notification up.
I can use the app, but the market always states installing. Even hours after. These all queue up and never clear.
Only rebooting the phone clears the installing app, and correctly marks them as installed.
5. Uninstalling app cannot be completed at all. I select uninstall, and it pops up the confirmation box, but then displays a blank page, and after the 10 or so seconds, displays the "Uninstalling application" with progress bar, but never completes. Again only a reboot corrects this.
All this occurs for any app.
I have done many Factory Resets from software, and Clear Storage from Fastboot.
Interestingly, my phone works corrected with a new account, I reset the phone and instead of signing in with my usual account, I created a new one, this worked very fast and correctly. Signing back in with my normal account again showed the same problems.

same problem here, gone from a G1 to HTC desire not tryed to sign up with a new account simply becasue i had the xxxx.xxxgmail mail now for over 18 months and rely on it.
All I know is that the day after I got my Desire, probably about 24 hours after first turning it on (and after 4 factory resets which may have nothing to do with it) I was installing an app, which had the same problems i.e. delayed permissions screen, remaining in the download screen even after being installed succesfully, then a few minutes later I went to install another app and it was fine, no delay, suddenly I had the Top Paid apps tab and apps did not remain in the download section as still downloading. It has been fine ever since.
It seems that all of us who have this problem have had G1s previously so it must be something to do with that.
I experienced this issue with my new desire but not one with older rom. Both from T-Mobile. The funny thing was first day it was running pretty slow, could not view paid apps either but now it is much faster as it should be and paid apps have appeared too. So it's working brilliantly.
i have market problems too... i cant see many market apps, including paid apps which i bought..
it's a free desire with vodafone spain sim.

That's a different issue, apparently Google have not yet added the HTC Desires "fingerprint" to some kind of database that enables access to apps with copy protection, this is why some apps you have previously purchased won't show up.
Apparently this happens with all new handsets, though why Google don't get this resolved before the phones release I don't know, as it doesn't give a great experience to the end user (HTC say they sent the fingerprint well before the phone was released but google haven't processed it yet).
Hopefully this should be resolved soon. Until then I have had to extract a few of my more regularly used protected apps from my G1 with root.
But it happens to me with free apps too.

Any application developer can choose to use copy protection, some free apps choose to do that.

[Q] Android and WiFi with redirects

Posted this in another forum, but you all are the experts. Impossible for me to access my work WiFi because of redirects (splash screen to accept use parameters).
Wondering if a custom ROM fixes it or if there is another solution.
Having an issue connecting to WiFi with Evo updated via official release of 2.2. I couldn't access it via 2.1 either. It's an odd network designation.
However, the iPhone can connect once I okay the error message.
Is there a work around that you may know about? Web search basically told me that the protocol is old and useless and that it should be changed. That is not possible.
Network designation is 1.1.1.1. I was unable to add links clarifying this because I am a new user.
Well Android can not connect to 1.1.1.1 addresses / networks / redirects. However the iPhone can. Is it inherent to the Android, or is there an app or tweak to get it to work.
This message ends by saying it will be fixed with Froyo.
Still can't post links to show what I mean.
Steamliver I just did a Google search for "Android 1.1.1.1" and this was the top result: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1597
I'm guessing this is the problem you are describing. Sounds frustrating and it has been going on for a long time. The newest post at the time I'm writing this recommends installing the Fennec browser (Firefox for Android, basically) and that worked for the poster.
If you have a laptop you could bring to work and tether via USB, I wonder if that would work? Just a temporary work around to use the phone to establish the wifi connection, then view the browser redirect on the laptop, accept, and then maybe you would be good to go?
Also, the simplest thing might be to call the IT department and ask them for help. Given Android's growing market share, one of them probably already have an Android phone and a fix for this problem. Good luck.
I have tried firefox and that did not solve the problem, does anyone have another ideas how to solve this.
It seems that 1.1.1.1 is locked in the android.

Streaming Difficulties on HOX

I did some looking and while I found some random posts I didn't find a large collection of posts about this, so I thought I would start one.
Since I purchased my One X (international, sim-unlocked/unbranded, Taiwan manufacture, CID HTC_001 running current UK build 1.28 software, not HTC-DEV unlocked, running on AT&T "4G", properly provisioned account), I have had difficulties with streaming audio.
By difficulties, I mean that songs skip. In Pandora, it seems that every other song will begin to play, then start skipping and after approximately 3-5 skips it will move to the next song, which will play fine. I have also noticed this behavior in Xiia-Live Lite (which allows access to shoutcast stations).
The issue manifests both on 3G/"4G" AND on Wi-Fi networks. I do NOT have the same issue with my new generation iPad on either local cellular or Wi-Fi networks. I am convinced it is a device issue. My Motorola Atrix had a similar issue when it came out that was eventually resolved, but it took some time.
What I'd like to know is if other folks are experiencing similar issues? I know of at least two because of the other random posts I found.
Thanks!
EDIT
I forgot to mention - it definitely seems worse if Beats is enabled vice disabled via the pop-up when music is playing.
Now that my device has been updated to the 1.29 build of software, having gone live OTA for UK devices, I tried Pandora again. Still I'm met with the same streaming issue as described above. I went so far as to completely delete Pandora (clear cache, clear data, uninstall, check for any unremoved folders, then reinstall) and still the issue persists. *sigh*

I am having the same issue. Upon first start of Pandora, I will be able to listen to two songs just fine; on the third, however, the song will play for 2 seconds and then trip up until Pandora skips and buffers the next song.
I wonder if this is related to the multitasking "problem"? I called and spoke with an HTC rep yesterday who stated that HTC is indeed working on a firmware update to correct the issues people are having with the OS dumping app cache and/or killing tasks.
Regardless, I don't have any qualms with HTC bettering ICS's multitasking capabilities, but it should not be at the expense of usability.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
-Sean
