I unrevoked my EVO and am now gonna root with damagecontrol. Do I have to remove unrevoked first then root with damagecontrol? Or can I root over unrevoked. I never rooted so Im backing up all data and giving it a go.
a good place for this will be the evo forum
DamageControl is a ROM, not a root method. You need to root with Toast's method to install custom ROMs.
Read through the links provided here (click) to find root, custom ROMs, etc.
you do not need to uninstall the unrevoked app to root your phone, i rooted right over it. since unrevoked is a joke anyways lol.

it's handy for some people, say those who are returning their phone soon and don't want to deal with un-rooting it when they have to, or those who are too scared to actually root.
It's just an app, doesn't matter what you do
shouldnt be a problem, just restart the phone and ur phone shouldnt be rooted anymore since once you reset thats it.. then root according to toasts method

hello,
This might be nood request I just rec my replacement phone in that has 2.2 after no 4g issue with my rooted 2.1
question
1. In 2.1 the toast (easy) way of rooting was the best way with nandroid that work best on all custom roms. unrevoked had issues from my understanding.
2.what is best
unrevoked 3.2
or
How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G
or
??????
3. which one way is the best way to unroot if need be to return to stock.
Thank you in advance I am looking into aVa v7 or virus series roms after I root 2.2 what is the best?
The how to root one uses unrevoked also. Its easy and unrevoked released how to put security back on the phone if need to be. Unrevoked 3 roots and unrevoked forever nand unlocks the phone. Give it a try. Don't be afraid..

ROOT
I still do not like using unrevoked for root.
I did the beginning steps in "How to root 2.2" to downgrade to 2.1. After that, I just used Toast's method for root and NAND unlock.
It's all personal preference.
If you go this route, you do not need to download any of the unrevoked files in the 2.2 thread.
Basically I'm new to the Android world. Just upgraded to an Evo4G from a good ol' WinMo 6.5 phone. What I want to do is simply root my Evo so I can take advantage of root-only apps, but keep the stock Sprint Froyo ROM with Sense UI.
Thanks a lot in advance. Much appreciated.

Root your phone with unrevoked from unrevoked.com.
Then flash the rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789913
Everything will be exactly the same, except you will have root and access to any program you would like.

to clarify, if you root your phone with unrevoked 3.21, it ONLY gives you root access and sets s-off. this means you still have your stock 2.2 rom.
the link provided above is the new OTA update. while you can install that, it's not necessary.
you should be able to do all the OTA's then unrevoked/forever.
no need to flash any other rom.
If this is in the wrong section, I do apologize. I have a friend who wants me to root his phone for him, but he has done all the OTA updates. Here is the info
Android2.2
Software# 3.29.651.5
Pri version 1.77_003
Prl version 60670
Browser version webkit 3.1
Baseband version 2.15.00.09.01
What is the best method for rooting? I used the Simple Root program to root mine, but I don't think that works on 2.2
Look in the Android Development section for rooting 2.2. It's not nearly as easy as simple root but the instructions are pretty clear and straightforward.

doesn't NAND unlock though. I just found that out. Now I'm looking for another solution. Can't seem to find SimpleRoot anywhere on the forum

Unrevoked 3, the newest version, does unlock NAND. I use that method and it worked well and required only few clicks. I also rooted using the old method, Unrevoked 3 worked just as well and I am Nand unlocked.

Apparently not. I used Unrevoked 3 last night to root my Evo and when I tried to install BusyBox it gave me a failed message saying something along the lines of "....or you are not NAND unlocked" If I'm missing something please let me know. Im ready to flash Fresh3.3 but I dont want to make any moves until I'm absolutely sure I've done everything right
Flash unrevoked 3. 21, reboot, check everything then flash unrevoked forever. But before this flash the latest version of ARMON RA, 1. 8 I think. Afterwards do a android backup FIRST. Then root. Be sure to click the "more " link at the unrevoked site, go through ALL the docs first.
Sent from my Sprint EVO
That would be nandroid backup. Do ARMON ra first, then backup, then root.

It does unlock nand, but the first ota overwrites it that's why you also flash unrevoked forever, get it... forever.

Ok I'll have to try this later on tonight. Off to work now. Is this still easier than using SimpleRoot because I just downloaded that as well.

Just so we have this straight. I've already flashed Unrevoked. I have S-Off and Super User and all of that.
You're saying to reflash, Reboot, check and make sure everything is cool.
Then run Unrevoked Forever BEFORE or AFTER runnin AmonRa? In the unrevoked menu I can choose my own recovery shouldn't I just do it there?
After then root again?
Ok brother, 1)Run Unrevoked 3.21 using AmonRa when that is done 2)Make a Nandroid 3)You need to put Unrevoked Forever on your SD card and flash that, its that simple, now you are rooted, S-off, nand unlocked etc....
Have fun man, always remember NANDROID, NANDROID, NANDROID!!!!!!
It has saved my ass multiple times, it doesn't matter how advanced a user you think you are EVERYONE makes mistakes.
There is no need to flash unrevoked forever if you root with unrevoked 3.21. It is already included. And if you want confirmation look at the faq for ur3.21.

This. I was about to say the same thing. UnrEVOked 3.21 does 3 things: Root, NAND unlock and S-OFF all in a nice little executable. Once you get that wonderful "Done" on unrevoked's application you are done and can flash away any custom ROM.
I used the old 2 part root method and MY evo has been rooted since June. Now my friend wants his rooted. He has also done all the ota updates. If I do unrevoked 3.21, will I be able to unroot if he ever needs to take his phone back to Sprint ??? I've read a bunch of mixed results.

All,
I've seen lots of info saying that a EVO 4G that came with 2.2 can't be rooted but based on what I'm seeing here that looks to be outdate info? Are you guys saying that unrevoked 3.21 is meant to be used on a EVO that comes with 2.2 or one that was already rooted?? Might be a dumb question but nothing out there clearly states this...
Thanks,
I'm ready to root and I've been reading and reading and reading and reading and I just don't understand how to root. I need a dummy proof way a step by step system to get this done. I know that my hboot is 0.97.0000. Someone please help me. I ready just need a more detailed root method. Thanks
Try this and skip the ota if you want to keep 0.97. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever You can later flash the latest ota ruu in recovery
Unrevoked Forever doesn't root the phone. It does NAND unlock (S-OFF) which allows you to flash custom ROMs.
You said your HBOOT is 0.97, so you can probably use Unrevoked 3.21/3.22 one click root to root your phone.

Once you are rooted, you can download the Wireless Tethering app from market.
Just playing around...
I tried to run rageagainstthecage exploit but my adb will not reconnect. I even specified port and device name. My EVO goes unresponsive and won't completely lock screen with the lock button on top. OTA update? Or is this my Windows 7?
rageagainstthecage just not written for 2.3.3?
Anyone working on the Gingerbreak? Maybe I should be posting this in dev...
No, you can't root the OTA update yet. You'll have to wait until someone finds a new root method.
And no, you shouldn't post this in the development section.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
So you're saying that this is bogus?
http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2011/04/yummy-yummy-gingerbreak.html
I'm saying it doesn't work for the Evo... at least not yet. You can always try it, but my guess is that if you can get it do anything, it'll be temp root.
I'm sure that someone will come out with a method soon enough.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
temp root should be enough to gain full root, probably with a method like the zikronix method. just temp root, flash mtd-eng from toastcfh, flash rooted build, flash ur-soff, flash sprint lovers w/ amon-ra, and all should be good. might have to unroot and test. we'll see...

no the mtd-eng. the part that controls the rules for the other partitions. you can't flash a recovery with temp root, but you can flash the mtd-eng with toast's modded version.
Sorry Im a little confused then. This overwrites the misc partition with engineering controls of some sort?
i think we're confusing eachother a bit lol. so rageagainstthecage lets you get temp root, in which you can flash toast's mtd-eng to the misc partition, allowing you to install a rooted pc36img.zip, allowing you to flash unrevoked forever by booting a recovery from your comp (also toast) which allows you to install a permanent recovery. confusing imo
