I'd like also wifi-N enabled. Thanks
for wifi n use defrost, for 720p its not possible right now on desire..
Lol I have to ask why people want this?
What are you going to be doing that requires 802.11n wifi? And why do you want 720p recording when it just makes it look worse? There is a reason why HTC haven't enabled it!

720p recording might not be useful to be watched in the phone itself, but if we transfer it to be seen in PC or media center it will look better than the current one.
Also imho, it's ok if people asking about this because afaik HTC put this in their pre spec, but remove it when the Desire launch, also they promised to give us the update for this.

Wireless N has benefits other than speed, you know. Greater range, for example. And better speeds at the same range is a side effect of this. So yeah, while G may be 54Mbps when you're sitting on top of the router, when you're a room or two away, that can drop quite considerably. Wifi N means you might actually get 30 or 40Mbps from a couple of rooms away.
Besides, some of us use VNCs and the like, extra bandwidth would sure as hell help there.
As for the 720p camera mod, an improvement is still an improvement. Unfortunately, there is no 720p Camera mod for the Desire yet. The nexus one mod is still somewhat experimental and is NOT transferable to the Desire in any way yet. Once the Nexus One mod becomes a bit more mature, the author behind it has promised that he'll look into Froyo and Desire support.
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general

Hey,
I am confused and i dont know which one to buy.
Which one would you choose and why?
This is a Desire forum so Desire is going to win
I would say either iPhone or Desire, as samsung in my experience makes crappy products.
Try what's best for you, if you like all the customisation and stuff, go for the desire
if you like a smooth, reliable experience, get the iphone.
try them out for yourself before deciding, people here will just try and tell you that android rules and anything to do with apple sucks.
HTC Desire if you want cool Android Action from HTC and you dont want to spend money for a silly fruit!
iPhone 4G if you want to have the best Hardware and that little apple on the case but only if you dont have to save money...
Like the first poster said... You will probably find the Desire win because it is the Desire section.
My opinion - Desire is, and always will be, my love but that new iPhone sure does look amazing. I think that if I were to buy a phone right now, I would actually wait for the iPhone, the only thing that might stop me is the price. But hey, that's just my opinion, it's going to be your investment so you should make sure that it is right for you.
Well i want to buy a phone in the next month or so and i want one which would easily last 1-2 years without becoming obsolete.
thanks for the replies so far..
Though I would say if you wanted a Desire - to go for the Nexus One instead. if you don't want your phone to become obsolete soon then the N1 is your best bet on the Android platform.
and is it because it would get direct updates from google?
Also, I try to watch youtube videos on my current phone(samsung jet) and it completely fails.
I was wondering, can 720p video be played on android 2.2?

In that case, I'd go with the iPhone. You're guaranteed to get updates all that time, I mean they've only just dropped the original iPhone, so I think that shows a lot.

yeah because of that, and also stock android is a lot smoother and less buggy than android with sense.
erm i can't see any reason why not, but when would you want to when the screen is only 400 px high in landscape?
Umm to view the video in higher quality?
Well im going to buy a new smartphone next month and I need to decide which phone to get between the HTC Desire and the Samsung galaxy S..
I decided to go with the Galaxy S since its hardware is way better..
And they said that its gonna have the 2.2
the only thing u will lose is the Sense UI (never had it..)

720p refers to it's resolution (the number of pixels) as a 720p video has 720 horizontal lines of pixels.
but the desire display only has 400 horizontal lines of pixels. So whats the point of having all those extra pixels when the screen can't display them?
You need an HD screen to get the benefit of HD video, like an HD TV or computer monitor.
But it is quite possible that android will take over apple. And I also read that htc will soon release a phone with a 1.5 ghz processor. And I don't think that nexus one is available in the uk.

N1 is available on vodafone at least, but not as good a deal as the desire.
and don't worry about processor speeds, they're pretty meaningless nowadays.
All the decent modern smartphones do everything instantly, the only place they're going to be different is benchmarks, which don't mean anything anyway.

The Desire can, but in really awful quality because it uses the flash lite player. If you use the youtube app you get better quality videos.
This is another reason why the N1 is better, it lets you play youtube videos from the browser without using the flash lite player which is awful quality.
Can not root the desire and install the stock android rom?
If the YouTube app is anything like the mobile website for YouTube, then it's no good.
I'm a coder with a shed load of console and PC development experience and I've been looking into doing some dev work on my new HTC Desire.
First thing that struck me was how bad the performance of the san-angeles demo is. I recompiled it using the arm7 eabi and still the performance sucked.
So I've tried out Quake 3. MY performance is pretty much identical to this chaps:
(Because I'm not allowed to post links: Look up "Quake 3 HTC Desire" on youtube)
So at least I know its not just me. The thing that confuses me, though, if you compare it to this video of the nexus one:
(Look up "Quake 3 Nexus one" on youtube)
You can see how badly the desire is performing.
So ... erm ... WTF is going on here? The CPU and GPU hardware in the Desire and Nexus one is the same isn't it? IS the Sense UI really causing performance to get hit THAT badly?
Anyone got any ideas how to improve performance? 'Cos this is making me sadly look at the iPhone for games development again and I prefer the Desire in general but the 3D performance is just waaaay too bad
Well i really think it's a matter of good or bad porting, since the Desire and Nexus one are essentially the same in hardware.
I don't think either that Sense have anything to do with it.
The games you're looking at are probably intended for 2.2 which has a massive speed improvement over 2.1. The Desire should be one of the next phones getting it, so that's good.
Does the nexus one used to demo the performance have froyo? Will that have a very positive impact on the Desire's performance?
Strangely I thought "Why don't I turn down the in-game settings?". After doing so it was much smoother.
So I decided to see which setting was killing it. So I pushed them back up one by one. Fine.
So I pushed texture detail BEYOND what it was originally ... Fine (Though frame rate is probably around 15fps). There is obviously something else amiss.
Now I've restarted and even WITH sound its running OK.
So yeah ... I take that back ... would love to know what was going on though.
To be honest, when I looked at the Nexus One Quake3 video on YouTube, everything looked much lower quality than what I saw on the Desire Quake3 video, but it was very difficult to tell as both videos were poor.
Regards,
Dave
Also ... this doesn't explain why the san-angeles demo was running so poorly

Yeah you are probably right ... Anyway ... porting my GL/DX9/10/11 engine to Android Ahoy!
Might be worth checking what resolution you're running at.
Once I set mine to run at 800x480 rather than the default 800x600 it jumped up to a reasonable speed....although it's still damn near impossible to play without decent controls
If only we had Urban Terror (far better Q3 port) on Android

Im planning on getting the desire, and im REALLY interested in the 720p recording, but from the videos ive seen in youtube they look like like upscaled videos whats the bitrate ? 19-20 fps? also the audio is craptastic
What about the pictures? i HATE the pics taken by my milestone, are the desire pics any better?
EDIT: i just realized this is the wrong forum x.x please close this, im gonna open a new post in general discussion
The 720p are pretty good for me actually. When transferred to my PC, i can view it in fullscreen with HD quality.
Pictures taken without flash is great, but with flash...zzzz its terrible. Not sure bout others but it does suck for me.
720p video is still in progress and for Desire/ Nexus
with the new radio that came yesterday HTC have more
improve the quality of recording, Cyanogen and his team
working on raising the fps and video at autofocus ..
also be expected to improve the quality and the options
I can record it fine, with 20 fps, but I don't see much point in it, cause the lens doesn't give very high quality video that is really worth recording in HD

Yep,You should buy a new clas6 or clas10 card & install new radio
first instal new radio file from hire ,camacoder workin so smooth now
I used to think the video was garbage too, which is is from stock rom with stock radio. But upgraded everything, radio, modaco r8 and just tried it now (never thought it would make it better) and its fine.
Yeah, not on par with iPhone 4 HD recording, but still quite good. Its only going to get better with the modifications that are coming.
I have one reserved to pick up in my local store now but not sure if its worth it when I got a Galaxy S2 and a iPhone 4S.
The screen is what interests me mostly but no idea how better that is compared to the two phones I have and heard about hardly any apps work on ICS yet e.g Facebook and so on.
Anyone who owns one would you say its worth it or stick to the two phones I have?

I cant talk for anyone else but myself in this regard. I have had my GN for about 24 hours now and have to say its the most amazing phone I have ever owned. Colours are rich and vibrant. Camera is fast as hell and yet still manages to focus. 5MP is more than enough for a camera, if I want to take professional shots then I will take my 16MP DSLR out but the majority of shots taken with phones are for social networking sites which resizes and compresses the image anyway so it doesnt matter. Speed is smooth as running a hot knife through butter and pretty much every program that I had running on Gingerbread works on this phone. The Tegra2 optimised games obviously wont work (apart from Guerilla Bob which works great) but I think I have installed about 60 apps and games since yesterday and only 3 or 4 havent worked. Facebook and Skype both work on my phone, even video calling works .
The main problems so far are satnavs (closes or stays black) and video players. I will try a few more satnavs and report back. Video players either stop running or wont install but that will soon be sorted so I have no worrys there.
I havent noticed any of the software problems that people are reporting but with a Nexus you HAVE TO REMEMBER that it is the first phone to have the latest software and its inevitable that there will be a few bugs to start with. Thats what updates are for and they will be ironed out soon enough. Developers will quickly update there apps for compatability with ICS and new apps will be made to enhance this beautiful screen.
If you have any more questions please ask away but I would definitely recommend getting it
Mark.

Well as I have only had the phone a day I cant comment about battery life at all as its been on charge pretty much the whole time. I like to give new phones a good days charge to make sure its maximum benefit from the first charge. Will know more about that after about a week when it starts to settle down into normal life.
The screen IS simply amazing. Its beautifully sharp especially when playing back 720p movies and its got the same coating on as the iphone to resist finger prints so it doesnt get that dirty look as quickly as other phones.

Hi Mark, how is the GPS fix time and accuracy compared to, e.g., your HD2? I've heard Samsung quite suck at the GPS department. Does this barometer sensor really helps improving the GPS fix speed like Google developers explained? Thanks.
Thanks mark that is good to know. I would like to switch my gs2 for nexus. Is nexus as smooth in web browsing and overall as gs2?
Could you mesure gps precision with gps test app?
Thanks.

The screens awesome, much better than the retina display IMO as its bigger with equivalent resolution and much better blacks because of the SAMOLED. Having to post on my sister-in-laws iPad as my nephews playing shadowrun on it and I can't get him off it.
Mark thank you and I took the plunge and picked one up.
Firstly amazing, the screen is mind blowing playing HD videos for a phone. Secondly ICS is miles ahead of Gingerbread. Can't speak highly enough of it experience wise so far.

Fellow Evomates,
I know there are a couple of related threads, but they are quite old and do not have the info i m looking at.
I have a couple of ocassions in my locality for new year and i cannot afford to miss them and my evo 4g is the only camcorder that i have.
So i want to know which is the rom that has the best video recording capabilities.
I m currently on stock(unrooted) 2.2 (yes i know i m a generation behind but i never felt the need of rooting my phone until today)
The audio quality on the stock is horrible. The video is good but i know my evo is capable of doing better.
So i need a rom that can :
1. Record in 1080p (i saw a rom a couple of months back that had this, not sure if it actually did and how usable it was) I m sure evo can do 1080p because 1080p is nothing but 2mp and evo has an 8mp camera, correct me if i m wront. Also, if it can do 1080p will i need to upgrade to a class 6 or class 10 sd card ?
2. If not 1080p then 720p with excellent audio quality.
Please suggest me the best rom, current user experience will be greatly appreciated. I m okay with any rom(sense, aosp etc) , video recording is the only priority, i dont need any other feature.
All replies will be appreciated. Thank you. Cheers !
P.S The ocassion is on 2nd jan, so please reply quickly as it will take me atleast a day to root and test.
Re: Evo Video
Recently switched from Tmobile to Sprint. I have flashed them all. Energy Rom for 1080p. Its very stable, daily use however no 4g. Currently using Warm Two Point Two. Good Luck and a warning ....Flashing is very addictive...
Using RadianceHD Revamped for one of my 5 Roms and it has 1080p camcorder capabilities and now has Beats audio capabilities as of last night thanks to Chad kernel.
Also USB Host Mode so you can add/connect USB peripherals to your phone.
Info - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278498
Direct download to latest version which was released last night - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20862088&postcount=6523
Enjoy
Thank you guys for the inputs. I m rooting my phone right away.
I have a couple of questions :
1. How stable is 1080p on evo. Does it lag ? how many fps can i get ?
2. Do i need to upgrade my class 2 sd card for 1080p to work properly.
Please note, i need to record for 2 hrs continuous, so how much of space will 1080p need ? Will an 8gig card be sufficient ??
Thanks
I remember reading somewhere that 16GB will get you 2.5hrs (empty), so by time you add Rom, apps and data you would be pushing it. 32GB, imo would be way to go. Might be wrong, but as far as class of card, heard mixed things on class 10, but good on 4 or 8. Brand name and reputation seems to play a part as well. Personally, I would never try and push a phone to do what you are trying to do.. but when its all you have.. you can make it do, just dont expect perfection.
I will say my EVO has never failed me yet :knocks on wood
Thanks. So i think 32gig class 6 is the way to go out.

I know i just cannot expect my phone to replace a camcorder completely and i know the limitations, but at the end of it i want most of its capabilities.
If it can do 1080p without any lag and without any prob, i would love 1080p from it but if it can do 720p with better fps then i guess i will stick to 720p.
What would be your final take? I m sure custom roms will do better 720p then the stock one, correct me if i m wrong.
So i guess i need to root it anyways.
Can you also post a video of 1080p so i can see how it looks, i would really appreciate if you can upload a sample. Thanks
