System wont update? - Desire General

I have recently rooted my phone, and it is now prompting me that there is a software update, version 121.405 (xxxxxx). But after it has downloaded the update and reboots, it gets to about 20 percent and fails.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Was the phone branded to start with? If it was debranded when rooted you'll need your Goldcard in, if it wasn't branded then you'll loose Root access when updating...

Yes it was branded, so I will have to remake my gold card. When I apply the update will I loose root?
Thanks for your reply.

Unrooting Orange HTC Desire to a Generic ROM

Hello All
I am a newbie to Android. I have an Orange UK HTC Desire. I rooted it and installed ClockworkMod recovery, plus LollyRom (0.2 version) for Froyo and App2SD.
Now I want to revert it back to original ROM in light of upcoming update for European Desires. Please tell me:
1) Is there a way to unroot my phone back to a GENERIC ROM rather than the Orange version?
2) What is the easiest method for that? And do I need a goldcard (I rooted using Unrevoked so did not need one). Please note that my phone was not locked as such, just displayed Orange splash screen and some (horrible) Orange apps
3) If I unroot it and install a generic ROM, will it be detected as a generic Euro unrooted Desire (so that it can be updated)?
Urgent help would be appreciated

I believe if the rumors and gossip is true that Euro will get updated by this weekend then you need to unroot to HTC_europe version in the official ROM that is available in the sticky post.
I am also pretty sure when HTC rolled the update, it will also be made available everywhere too as long as it is official ROM version. So yes, you will get the update.
Thanks very much.
I just need to know: will I need a goldcard or something to unroot? I did not require it at the time of rooting.
Secondly there seem to be two versions of the generic Euro ROM - which to choose?
Seeing as you're on orange, unless your phone is unlocked, you'll need the 1.15. The 1.21 one updates the radio as well and causes a sim lock on orange phones.
Yes you will need a gold card to flash a generic rom. Imo, the generic rom is much better than the orange one with all the demo games and stuff. If you struggle making a goldcard, google goldcardtool - makes the job easy. Just a few mouse clicks and its done. Simple

I'm on mac os x, can someone link me to/ extract the rom.zip for
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
??
ps. what is the difference between
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.1_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121684.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
iinga: Many thanks for the reply. Please bear with me the repetitive questions though:
1) You say I am on Orange. I WAS when I bought the phone, but I am using a different SIM now (in another country) and its working perfectly without unlocking etc. After rooting and installing LollyRom all traces of Orange have vanished from my phone. Does it still mean I have to be picky with generic ROMs?
2) I did not need a gold card to root it and install another Froyo ROM. Is it confirmed that I will need a gold card to unroot it back?
1) What network are you now on? I know that orange are very picky with radio updates. Despite rooting/debranding, updating the radio would mean that they simlock their phone. However, as you mentioned you are on another network, I believe that you may have an unlocked phone?
Also, as the froyo update requires a new radio, it may well be worth your while to unlock regardless...I originally unlocked mine (despite being on orange network) to update to froyo roms with the necessary radio update.
2) Yes, you will still need a goldcard to install a generic rom.
I had Orange UK ROM. I've unlocked it with a code. Then I made a goldcard and installed
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
Everything works fine but one thing. Red color is rather orange than red and is too saturated ie. faces of my friends are very reddish. I hope Froyo resolve this.
Just a quick point the Rom coming out this weekend is for unbranded and unlocked phones only not Orange or vodaphone or t mobile just unbranded and unlocked HTC desire.

I think that after unlocking and actualizing to official ROM my HTC is the same as brand new unlocked Desire. I don't suppose that OTA checks IMEI numbers and knows which phone was unlocked phone from begining.
Iinga: actually I am in a third world country having imported orange branded desire. I did update the radio before updating to a Froyo Rom . The phone is working perfectly with a local 2.5 g sim from day one and continued to work perfectly after rooting and updating . So far as I am concerned my phone IS unlocked despite initial orange branding. So I think transition to a generic HTC euro Rom will be possible . Am I correct ?
Secondly I didn't need a gold card for rooting and installing a custom Rom and it worked so it shows my phone is not network locked. So why do i need it to revert to a generic Rom ? Sorry for repetition again and thanks for the help

Ok, i guess you are unlocked.
From my understanding, if your phone was originally flashed with an orange rom, you will need a goldcard. You only don't need a goldcard if your phone was originally unbranded.
Rooting is a different process
Ok I guess now everything is clear . Just to confirm: using the goldcard I will be able to turn my currently rooted phone into a generic euro phone right ? Now the only question is which ruu to use of the given two.
since your phone is unlocked, use 1.21, it's the last official update for unbranded phones:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
So this will revert me to generic euro? What about those ruus labeled euro or something like that ?
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
Use that one as you're unlocked. And yes it will revert you to official stock rom.
So what if your IMEI isn't in the 'database'?
Yes, an OTA has sim-locked the phone. Yes, I am on Orange. Yes, I went to htccode.com.
No, my IMEI is NOT in the database (it's three months old!). Will be chasing for a refund from htccode so let's see what happens.
What next? I could flash the earlier ROM again, but I want the Froyo upgrade to work. I did try to go to Orange for the unlock code but, despite being an Orange-branded phone, I bought it through Phones4U. Apparently I have to go to them for the code. Sounds suss to me, but will be popping to the shop today to ask.
SavCom
I've just been to htcunlock.com. Paid my dues, got my phone back and we're now running Froyo properly as of an hour ago.
Off to htccode.com to get my money back
I have a Desire that had the Orange rom on it, I debranded it with a goldcard to the generic 1.15 rom, then i did the OTA update to 1.21.405 which also updated the Hboot to 0.8 and the updated radio and simlocked the phone so I bought an unlock code and all was good.
Next I rooted the phone using the modaco r6 rooted 1.15 rom, used a few rooted roms then decided I would unroot to get the official froyo update. To do this I used the 1.21.405 zip from shipped roms, put it on the sd card (gold card) named as PB99IMG, booted to recovery and selected fastboot, this is the only way to get back if you have the 0.8 hboot. That took me back to generic unrooted so yesterday I was prompted to install the 2.2 update. I didn't install it as the new hboot sounds like a nightmare. Instead I rooted again using unrevoked 3 and installed a rooted version of the official 2.2 rom, I didn't use a goldcard for this.
Hope this helps.

I have a debranded orange phone, used a goldcard to debrand to a generic 1.21 ROM, since then I have upgraded to the new froyo 2.2 official and ever since my phone is on a continuous loop of restarting all the time every 2mins, no SD card, No WIFI and no GSM calls etc.
I've tred various RUU's and updates and nothing has worked. Im thinking maybe I need an Orange RUU file, but just can't find one anywhere...
I tried using 1.21.405 zip, renamed to PB99IMG then went through recovery mode and fastboot, but when fast boot was selected nothing happened just another menu with - reset, bootloader, clear data etc nothing to say install anything?

OTA updates after unbranding

Hi,
The minute I got my Vodafone branded Desire I unbranded it by installing the original HTC ROM. When I installed FroYo 2.2 OTA my Desire "crashed". Everytime I booted my Desire it kept saying process "system" is not responding and it kept rebooting.
After I reïnstalled the original HTC ROM I kept my GoldCard in (instead of swapping it with my 8GB sd-card) and I removed my SIM-card. I installed FroYo 2.2 over my WiFi and now it worked..
But now I am wondering if I have to remove my SIM-card and swap my 8GB SD-card with my GoldCard to install updates over my WiFi..
HTC got a new firmware update to download but I don't want to download it right now because I am afraid it stops functioning again..
Isn't it so that now I installed an original HTC ROM my Desire is completely Factory default instead of branded?
If you originally had a branded phone ALL updates, whether OTA or RUU, will need the gold card. The phone CID is still vodafone
After you have debranded do you now recive all OTA updates from HTC or do you have to do them manually?
Joshhudsy: after debranding your phone runs the same software as the non-branded desires, which means it checks for the same system-updates.
So yes you will receive all updates directly from HTC, though as mentioned by EddyOS it will require you to have you goldcard in the phone when updating.

Lost goldcard - just create another?

Hey all
I debranded my UK Vodafone Desire to update to the HTC stock 2.2 ROM. This worked just fine. A few weeks after my sd card went boom and I had to replace it, thus I lost my goldcard.
I want to update with the new OTA update from HTC but without the goldcard I understand that this would kill my wifi.
I'm guessing that I can just create a new goldcard using the same method as before (http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/) and then do an OTA update?
Yep, just make another gold card and away you go!
Vodafone have now release 2.10 and it's not branded in anyway, so you could just go to that for now
Cheers for that boss, appreciate it. Just wanted to make sure that I dont do anything dumb. I'm getting more risk adverse the older I get it seems!
I did think about flashing back to stock Voda roms but I have zero trust in them anymore!
One more dumb question! I can create the goldcard and then copy back over my music, pictures etc and just leave it in there right? I only have one sd card at the moment :-(
EDIT - Bollocks! The goldcard wasn't right and I lost my wifi after updating OTA. I had to downgrade to 2.1 using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256 after recreating the goldcard again back home on this win7 x64 box.
The downgrade has worked and Im not running the OTA update using the new goldcard.

[Q] OTA update with Goldcard

Hi guys, did a quick search but couldn't find a specific answer...
I have an Orange UK Desire that I've successfuly debranded using a Goldcard (made with help from these forums ). Since then, I just kept that micro SD card in the phone during normal use. It is the supplied card from Orange.
Ocassionally I get a notification about an OTA update, but my question is: Can I safely proceed with this update with my 'Goldcard' in its current state? I.e. I've since loaded some photos onto the card via usb, and have some other photos stored on it after taking some photos with the phone's own camera.
Just want to make sure, as I remember reading when initially debranding my phone to be careful about OTA updates if you dont have your goldcard in your phone.
Thanks in advance,
Its not advised to update any rooted rom with ota's.
What is your current rom?
Rooted?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If your phone isn't rooted then yes you can still use your goldcard with the photos on.
Yeah. If you're not rooted, just have the goldcard in the phone while applying the OTA update. It does not matter if you've got stuff on the goldcard.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
No, not rooted, just debranded.
Ok, thanks a lot. Looks like I'll update when next prompted. Cheers!
OK I'll bite - how do you apply updates if you are rooted and debranded?
(I hope there's an easier way than flashing a new stock RUU then reinstalling everything ...)

[Q] Debranded, Downgraded, Rooted - Now how do I update?

So I've been at this one for a while, using information from various threads, getting things wrong, getting things right... now I'm at a loss!
Background
My Desire went faulty. I sent back to HTC. They sent me a new phone. It was locked. They sent me an unlock code. It was then unlocked. It was branded to T-Mobile. I didn't want that. So...
From what I can remember...
First, I flashed (I think that's the correct term) an unbranded version:-
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
I then accepted the OTA update from HTC so that I was on Android Froyo 2.2.
All was well.
I then got anther OTA notification about a week later (2.2.1?).
Downloaded and tried to install, but got the Red Triangle with Exclamation Mark icon.
I read somewhere that I need to Root the phone.
So I did the downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1, changing the HBOOT from something like 0.9x to 0.83.
Used Unrevoked to Root the phone.
Now I get an OTA notification to say that 2.2 is available.
But when I download and try to install, the phone reboots into Clockwork Recovery mode.
What I want
It's simple. I dont want the phone rooted. I want to leave the phone unbranded. I want to be able to accept OTA updates.
...All this was to simply try and debrand the phone, but wasn't expecting such a tough task.
Someone please help!
HTC don't brand their phones, only specific phone operators. If you didn't have any operator logos then you already had an unbranded handset. Having said that, you can't apply an OTA update to a rooted phone as it screws things up
What you need to do is download the 2.29.405.5 RUU and just flash that and you'll be fully up-to-date
Thanks for the info.
I am downloading the 2.29.405.5 RUU as I type.
Will this enable OTA updates in future or will I always have to manually update using this method?
If the RUU installs WITHOUT the use of a gold card then OTA will always work, if you need to use a gold card to flash that RUU then, at present, you'll need to do it this way each time
Okay, so I tried to run the update without a gold card, but got error 131. I presume this indicates that I need a gold card.
I have a gold card, but is there any way to ensure that the future OTA updates can be installed without having to use a gold card?
What else did the error code say? Pretty sure code 140 is wrong CID (need a gold card)
Basically, each phone has a vendor ID. This limits the phone to only install ROMs released for it. The gold card, when in use, masks this code to allow any ROM of any build to be installed. The gold card would then need to be used for all future updates as otherwise they fail
Something happened with the last unbranded OTA update - 2.29.405.5. Even using an gold card the update would fail. Seems Google have changed something to stop people flashing it who aren't truely unbranded
So, to answer your question - If you use a gold card to flash that RUU you MIGHT need to use an RUU each time in future as the OTAs may still fail. We won't know until the next one is released
The error code 131 is Customer ID error. So probably same as 140-CID, therefore I assume I need to use my Gold Card.
I will try using the Gold Card now whilst updating to see if this works ok.
It is disappointing... I wasn't aware that debranding your phone would cause all of these problems. The process was easy and the instructions didn't mention this as a potential downfall. I have my fingers crossed that the next OTA wont fail!
It's only the last OTA that failed, previous ones worked fine so long as the gold card was in use (the gold card can be used as a normal day to day card btw)
Thanks Eddy, you've been a massive help. Was tired of scratching my head for answers... I've been using my gold card as normal anyway so was aware it wasn't much of an impact to update manually... just a bit of a pain of OTAs don't work in future.
How do you know so much? Are you a developer?
I've had my Desire since the phone was released in March/April last year so have a lot of experience. I'm not a developer but I read a lot of threads and this was one that came up a lot when the 2.29.405.5 OTA came out. I do make my own ROMs but they're for my own use (I wouldn't wanna have it take up all my time changing for others!!)
Hopefully it won't be an issue in future OTAs but until one is released we'll never know
On a slightly separate note, can you recommend the best way to Root the Desire... is it using Unrevoked3? Or is this pretty much the only way? Cheers
These days unrEVOked is the only way
