Hi guys, did a quick search but couldn't find a specific answer...
I have an Orange UK Desire that I've successfuly debranded using a Goldcard (made with help from these forums ). Since then, I just kept that micro SD card in the phone during normal use. It is the supplied card from Orange.
Ocassionally I get a notification about an OTA update, but my question is: Can I safely proceed with this update with my 'Goldcard' in its current state? I.e. I've since loaded some photos onto the card via usb, and have some other photos stored on it after taking some photos with the phone's own camera.
Just want to make sure, as I remember reading when initially debranding my phone to be careful about OTA updates if you dont have your goldcard in your phone.
Thanks in advance,
Its not advised to update any rooted rom with ota's.
What is your current rom?
Rooted?

If your phone isn't rooted then yes you can still use your goldcard with the photos on.
Yeah. If you're not rooted, just have the goldcard in the phone while applying the OTA update. It does not matter if you've got stuff on the goldcard.

No, not rooted, just debranded.
Ok, thanks a lot. Looks like I'll update when next prompted. Cheers!
OK I'll bite - how do you apply updates if you are rooted and debranded?
(I hope there's an easier way than flashing a new stock RUU then reinstalling everything ...)

Hi all,
Since the last OTA created plenty of problems to debranded Orange owners, I just wanted to let everybody know that I did install the OTA and did not find any problem so far.... everything went smoothly in updating OTA from the latest RUU update. No need for gold cards or complicated procedures

Can I ask which method did you use to originally debrand your phone? Which rome did you flash to?
The 405 RUU that had been posted around may on these forums... see here for a full list:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
Very easy, all you need is to make a gold card. Things get slightly more messy if you are not a Windows user.

for my own device :
It was Orange France 1.22 ROM;
I rooted my device with UnrEVOked;
Then I use the downgrade method that uses fake ROM version reporting to RUU;
Installed full Europe_1.15 HTC ROM;
And install all OTA updates, as when asked.
Note : I alway have my gold card in it, and I never got any trouble.
Thanks. I dont want to root my phone just debrand it to receive OTA`s directly from HTc and not wait for carrier specific.
Question: is it safer to flash it to 1.15 and then do OTA to 1.21 and Froyo or flash directly with 1.21?
Directly 1.21, if I did not screw up version numbers it was the jump from 1.15 to 1.21 that created the problem when done in OTA (WiFi module could not be loaded correctly)

ql. did you have to have your goldcard in while doing the FROYO update?
Yes

Hi all, I realise there are going to be loads of threads (indeed there are already some) outlining Froyo upgrade woes/tips but since users with Orange branded handsets seem to have a slightly different time of things I thought it may be useful to share experiences(although presumably it will only be debranded users that are going to be updating at the moment).
I debranded mine to the RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed rom and have unlocked the phone using a code from eBay. I'm about to install the OTA update with a goldcard inserted I'll let you know how I've got on after the fact.
Thanks.
Worked! On the face of it it seems to have worked. As far as I can see my stuff has been retained and everything is working (camera included).
Yeah thanks. Maybe Goldcard is the answer
Just updated my unlocked debranded orange desire with goldcard inserted. No problems so far everything working fine including wifi.

Running 1.15 as I didn't want to have to unlock on updating to 1.21
I assume I'll have to:
OTA update to 1.21
Unlock
OTA update to Froyo w/ Goldcard
Agree?

I could be wrong but if memory serves, you have to have the goldcard in for the OTA update to 1.21 or your wifi will stop working (provided the handset is Orange branded) Something about not being able to overwrite a file without the goldcard in? (But that will update your radio and then you'll need to unlock it as you say) I could be wrong though
Ok just so you all know i've succesfully downgraded to 2.1 using my goldcard. Now to try the 2.2 update again using goldcard.
Im on orange debranded unlocked and never rooted, what should i do??
EDIT: doinbox should be able to answer this when he finishes
Guys, just spoke with Orange and apparently they are rolling out Froyo by end of next week, i think I might wait rather than use a gold card
Ahhhh i never thought of this.
I went ahead with the ota upgrade and now the phone keeps rebooting in a loop. It gets so far as the unlock screen and then i get a notice saying "Process system is not repsonding" I get to choose "force close" or "wait". Neither selection does anything, the phone simply reboots at this stage and gets in a loop.
Im in same boat, seems to be that it's using the 2.1 radio version so it wont work. I'm stuck where to go
Success
Righties, on the face of it it seems to have worked. as far as I can see my stuff has been retained and everything is working (camera included).
Updated initial post.

what about when you take out your goldcard??
Thanks
I dun like Orange Roms.
So I did the same like the Author of this thread did.
Flash to the Original WWE Roms with goldcard. Then Update to 2.2 through OTA.
No Problems at all!! Fantastic Froyo.
Just taken it out and put my big card back in, all fine. I believe the goldcard itself is only for the installation of roms and radios onto branded handsets, so once the update has completed I don't believe you need it in.
That said it was my intention just to make my big memory card into a goldcard and leave it in the phone permanently (I just forgot )
Downloading now. Thanks for risking your desire for the community
I had previously updated my Orange debranded Desire to 1.21 using my gold card. I just used the same gold card again to update to froyo and it all worked really well.
Just make sure you have 25mb free space on your phone before updating.

You do not need to go back to go forward here.
**IF YOU ARE DEBRANDED AND HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE OTA UPDATE JUST RUN UPDATE.ZIP TO BOOTLOADER WITH GOLDCARD INSERTED - DO NOT REGRESS TO FULL 2.1 RUU OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR SETTINGS ETC**
Hopefully it all goes well and smoothly for everyone else
I'd imagine the worst that could happen is some reflashing/unlocking required.

Unlocking code is pretty cheap at Ebay. I bought mine for only 7.99 GBP. So no worries...
I been going round here and the web wondering how to do this. I have
hboot 0.83.0001
I made a gold card which seems to have worked out fine so far but no idea where to go from here about updating my phone from 2.1 3 network branded to a non branded firmware. I am not interested in any custom firmware or anything I don't care about extra apps I just want stable 2.2.
I was in exactly the same position as yourself, had a 3 branded desire with same bootloader.
I made a goldcard also but found I didn't need it, I used unrevoked3 to root the phone and install clockwork mod from which I installed a update.zip patch and then a rooted untouched 2.2 Rom and now the phone is still rooted, unbranded and running 2.2 like a charm. Sorry if this explanation is a bit vague.
The Rom I used was 2.09.405.8-update-bravo-stock-rooted-busybox-withradio-signed.zip

Boot your phone is rooted something I am not interested in really as I want Offical 2.2 unbranded. If I have to root temp to get there I don't mind going hrough the process providing its safe enough. I just don't see the point of rooting as the cons outweight the goals as some apps are starting to detect rooted phones now and refusing to boot.
Go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/

and download this file to your PC:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Once downloaded, connect your Desire to your PC and make sure HTC Sync says it's connected. Then run the RUU file you've just downloaded.
If your Gold card is correct it will allow you to flash the stock 2.2 ROM - you'll also need the gold card for future updates (either OTA or RUU)

Which apps? I've not heard of this issue.
BTW - you should edit your thread title, because your use of the word "Vanilla" implies that you want to try a non-Sense ROM which would require you to root.

Dave

blizzard authenticator can detect if your phone is rooted and will not boot Blizzard say its for security reasons but I read on net it's not just this app that refuses to boot if it detects a root.

Thanks for this will probably try later I don't understand why I will need the gold card for future updates though??
You'll need your gold card because your phone is a branded phone - the CID code won't pass checks without the gold card, even though you've 'debranded' the handset
Thank you all for this most informative thread, and apologies for the minor hijack.
I have a tmobile branded desire and would also like to be running the stock 2.2 with sense.
Will the above process work for me ?
I was hoping to get the OTA updates OTA however, is there a way of doing this ?
Also, are there any benefits to removing the carrier sim lock even though I have no intention of using an alternative carrier sim ?
Thanks for your time.
edit: I have read a bit more, and, now knowing the warranty issues, I will not be attempting to modify the CID

Your link didnt work anyway once you click download theres an error as the sites been taken over.
Hey all
I debranded my UK Vodafone Desire to update to the HTC stock 2.2 ROM. This worked just fine. A few weeks after my sd card went boom and I had to replace it, thus I lost my goldcard.
I want to update with the new OTA update from HTC but without the goldcard I understand that this would kill my wifi.
I'm guessing that I can just create a new goldcard using the same method as before (http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/) and then do an OTA update?
Yep, just make another gold card and away you go!
Vodafone have now release 2.10 and it's not branded in anyway, so you could just go to that for now
Cheers for that boss, appreciate it. Just wanted to make sure that I dont do anything dumb. I'm getting more risk adverse the older I get it seems!
I did think about flashing back to stock Voda roms but I have zero trust in them anymore!
One more dumb question! I can create the goldcard and then copy back over my music, pictures etc and just leave it in there right? I only have one sd card at the moment :-(
EDIT - Bollocks! The goldcard wasn't right and I lost my wifi after updating OTA. I had to downgrade to 2.1 using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256 after recreating the goldcard again back home on this win7 x64 box.
The downgrade has worked and Im not running the OTA update using the new goldcard.
So I've been at this one for a while, using information from various threads, getting things wrong, getting things right... now I'm at a loss!
Background
My Desire went faulty. I sent back to HTC. They sent me a new phone. It was locked. They sent me an unlock code. It was then unlocked. It was branded to T-Mobile. I didn't want that. So...
From what I can remember...
First, I flashed (I think that's the correct term) an unbranded version:-
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
I then accepted the OTA update from HTC so that I was on Android Froyo 2.2.
All was well.
I then got anther OTA notification about a week later (2.2.1?).
Downloaded and tried to install, but got the Red Triangle with Exclamation Mark icon.
I read somewhere that I need to Root the phone.
So I did the downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1, changing the HBOOT from something like 0.9x to 0.83.
Used Unrevoked to Root the phone.
Now I get an OTA notification to say that 2.2 is available.
But when I download and try to install, the phone reboots into Clockwork Recovery mode.
What I want
It's simple. I dont want the phone rooted. I want to leave the phone unbranded. I want to be able to accept OTA updates.
...All this was to simply try and debrand the phone, but wasn't expecting such a tough task.
Someone please help!
HTC don't brand their phones, only specific phone operators. If you didn't have any operator logos then you already had an unbranded handset. Having said that, you can't apply an OTA update to a rooted phone as it screws things up
What you need to do is download the 2.29.405.5 RUU and just flash that and you'll be fully up-to-date
Thanks for the info.
I am downloading the 2.29.405.5 RUU as I type.
Will this enable OTA updates in future or will I always have to manually update using this method?
If the RUU installs WITHOUT the use of a gold card then OTA will always work, if you need to use a gold card to flash that RUU then, at present, you'll need to do it this way each time
Okay, so I tried to run the update without a gold card, but got error 131. I presume this indicates that I need a gold card.
I have a gold card, but is there any way to ensure that the future OTA updates can be installed without having to use a gold card?
What else did the error code say? Pretty sure code 140 is wrong CID (need a gold card)
Basically, each phone has a vendor ID. This limits the phone to only install ROMs released for it. The gold card, when in use, masks this code to allow any ROM of any build to be installed. The gold card would then need to be used for all future updates as otherwise they fail
Something happened with the last unbranded OTA update - 2.29.405.5. Even using an gold card the update would fail. Seems Google have changed something to stop people flashing it who aren't truely unbranded
So, to answer your question - If you use a gold card to flash that RUU you MIGHT need to use an RUU each time in future as the OTAs may still fail. We won't know until the next one is released
The error code 131 is Customer ID error. So probably same as 140-CID, therefore I assume I need to use my Gold Card.
I will try using the Gold Card now whilst updating to see if this works ok.
It is disappointing... I wasn't aware that debranding your phone would cause all of these problems. The process was easy and the instructions didn't mention this as a potential downfall. I have my fingers crossed that the next OTA wont fail!
It's only the last OTA that failed, previous ones worked fine so long as the gold card was in use (the gold card can be used as a normal day to day card btw)
Thanks Eddy, you've been a massive help. Was tired of scratching my head for answers... I've been using my gold card as normal anyway so was aware it wasn't much of an impact to update manually... just a bit of a pain of OTAs don't work in future.
How do you know so much? Are you a developer?
I've had my Desire since the phone was released in March/April last year so have a lot of experience. I'm not a developer but I read a lot of threads and this was one that came up a lot when the 2.29.405.5 OTA came out. I do make my own ROMs but they're for my own use (I wouldn't wanna have it take up all my time changing for others!!)
Hopefully it won't be an issue in future OTAs but until one is released we'll never know
On a slightly separate note, can you recommend the best way to Root the Desire... is it using Unrevoked3? Or is this pretty much the only way? Cheers
These days unrEVOked is the only way
