Network Lock - Desire General

Hi all,
Just flashed my phone from standard Orange ROM to a generic version as per this guide:
forum . xda-developers . com / showthread.php?t=688404
However, once the phone reboots, I am presented with a screen asking for the "SIM network unlock PIN" as my SIM card is refused.
Any ideas what to do??

Just run this one, It's not the latest, but it's got the right radio update for Orange supplied devices. Alternativly, you could have you desire unlcoked, then you could update the radio too.

Hi
You either need to flash back to your previous radio or get a sim unlock code - however these cost between £15-20.

Tried this method but unfortunately it returned "Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error"
How have other people managed to remove Orange branding with the updated radio version and not faced the same problem?
I don't really want to pay to unlock it as that would be of no use to me and I don't know of a site that's guaranteed to work with my Orange UK contract phone.

Unbranded desire on orange, root and radio

Browsing the forums today has made me aware that the following could be an issue if I wish to root and flash a froyo rom to my htc desire.
When I bought my htc desire I wanted to stay with the orange network but avoid actually buying an orange branded (corrupted) phone - so I bought my desire from the carphone warehouse (uk) and it's supposed to be unlocked. I got it with a contract orange sim though.
It has no label "ORANGE" and came with no orange games/apps installed, but today I realised that I don't have the GTalk app and I couldn't find it on the market. I installed it from elsewhere and it seems to run fine, but was it being blocked in some way in my view of the market? Is my phone still truly unlocked or was it ever? I will try a PAYG sim from another network tomorrow.
The main thing I'm concerned about though is the radio. I've received several OTA updates since I got the phone. Could one of these have updated the radio to work on orange uk and if I install a new radio (as most froyo guides insist on) will that break my orange uk link? I read somewhere that an orange specific radio effectively locks your phone to orange and it takes a whole load of unrooting/rooting and avoiding OTA updates to keep it going on custom roms.
Is this the issue that makes rooting an orange uk desire a dangerous proposition or is it the orange branding / locking / User interface corruptions that is the issue? If it's the former, I'm locked into orange after buying an unlocked phone. If it's the later then I should be okay.
Many forum posts say "safe EXCEPT ON ORANGE".
If I install one of these new radios, might I have a problem with orange UK?
Current software information:-
Firmware : 2.1 update 1
Baseband : 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel : 2.6.29-0cb9f166
Build : 1.21.405.2
Bootloader 0.80.xx
Gtalk is on all Android phones, that's why it isn't on the market.
On all radios should be able to access any network without any problems.
The updates probably came from HTC themselves. The updates were probably to upgrade from factory to current. I got an unlocked HTC desire that's on 2.1 update 1 (exact same software information except the random string in the kernel field) I am usually on t-mobile but I pop it out for a orange PAYG when I'm in T-mobile blackspots.
I got some sms from Orange when I first got the phone telling me they were going to push some 'handy' additions to my phone and then I got some OTA updates.
Today I realised that GTalk was on my phone as a service but not as an app, which I read was how Orange branded phones arrive.
So what do all the "safe except on orange" warnings refer to?
Sorry I didn't see your last paragraph before. So if this radio works on other networks the warnings must be branded related.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
the 'additions' they send is just adding orange's APN so you can access the internet through the mobile network. This happened to me when I put the orange sim in.

[Q] Orange Simlock, what have I done wrong?

Hi,
I bought a HTC desire locked to orange. I rooted it and upgraded the radio to the latest one and then flashed OpenDesire 2.6.0 only to find that I get a message asking me to enter the simlock pin.
So I bought the simlock pin. This works fine, however after a messages stating that I was succesfull nothing happens. there's a warning sim notification on the top corner of my screen but when I expand the notification bar there is no message. The phone still hasn't registered/acknowledged my sim card though (I cannot make calls etc).
Am I doing things in the wrong order?
Please help.
Thanks,
Craig
Which radio version are you using? The latest ones do not seem to have any problem with Orange phones.

I tried 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 first
and then 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20
You're the first to report SIM lock issues with the latest radios, you on Orange UK?

Yes, orange UK. I'm just trying a different ROM as we speak (DeFroST_3.1)
Those radios have been ok with Orange branded phones so far. Did you let the phone boot after you flashed your radio before you installed the custom ROM?
I would try flashing the latest 2.1 generic RUU (goldcard required). Apparently there are problems trying to sim unlock a phone on some non-stock ROMs.

I understand what a gold card is etc....but why is it needed again here?
I thought the gold card pretty much allowed you to boot into recovery and then flash a rom?
I will try the following first:
1)wipe / clear cache's
2) flash radio and reboot
3)flash rom
This is what I SHOULD be doing right?
When you first updated the radio did you boot into your Orange software? If so, I take it there was no request for a sim unlock code then?
Without a goldcard you can't flash using an RUU (there are no branded Orange ones).
You could also try installing a custom pre-rooted froyo ROM.

I don't think there was a request for simlock. Instead it just rejected the sim.
Oh right....why do I want an RUU? I'm sure I'm missing something here.....My phone's already rooted....I just want a custom rom on here eg. open desire...
People have had problems unlocking their phones on non-stock roms.

Ahh ok. So I apply the RUU rom and unlock....then re-root etc and I won't need to unlock again?
That's what I'd try.
OK, thanks alot mate
Just a quick update. I've flashed RUU and then sim unlock has worked perfectly. I'm now going to root and try a custom rom again. If this fails I guess I'm stuck with RUU = stuck with sense = no wii remote
You will need to update the radio again for the latest roms.

[Q] Do I need to SIM Unlock??

Hello All,
When I first got my desire back in April from Orange UK, I had the default Eclair build. I rooted and moved to a Froyo custom ROm and Radio and found I was locked out of my own network as the ROM was of course De-Branded. At the time I paid and got an unlock code.
I recently had to send my phone back for Warranty repair with HTC and they have returned it to me, once again with the current Orange ROM/Radio versions and having changed some inards, I now have a new IMEI number too. I have so far tried two unlock sites but both came back with a "sorry we don't have a code for that IMEI" and so I am very wary of putting another custom ROM on my device in case I get SIM locked out of my own network again.
My question is this:
I vaguely remember that the issue with Orange users being locked out of their own network when using the debranded froyo ROm's was due to changing the Radio (as we needed a 5.x.x.x radio when moving from ecalir to froyo). Since my current Radio is 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30, if I get a custom ROM without Radio and carry on using the one I have (already Froyo compatible) will I be ok or will I get simlocked again?
Many thanks in advance
David
Strange, I always thought ROM had nothing to do with your SIM lock... Maybe it depends on what phone you have because I have SIM unlocked my HTC magic after owning it a year long and then after that installed many different ROMs without being SIM locked again.
Sent from my HTC
You don't need to unlock anymore. Newer radios don't lock orange desires anymore.
I did the exact same thing as you, when I got my second orange desire I didn't need to unlock it.

Thanks mercinary, does this mean I can choose the radio update with the relevant custom ROM or should I keep the Radio on the device that is there currently?

That's generally the case, but in the past flashing a non orange froyo radio on a locked orange desire would lock you out of all networks...including orange. It has not been an issue afaik since orange released froyo, all radios after this point did not lock orange phones.
I wish we knew more about this bug because if the radio can manipulate the phones lock state maybe a custom radio can be made to unlock your phone...that's a big maybe though, and I don't know what I'm talking about

Its up to you. If you've got froyo now the radio will work fine with any rom. I've never had any trouble with my new orange desire, flashed loads of radios.
I think i would have a word with HTC, your phone was unlocked when you sent it to HTC for repair, so it should be unlocked on return to you, even if they have changed the mainboard.

[Q] Require some critical information urgently for unrooting

Hello great minds at xda,
My friend too has a desire...as his phone is rebooting frequently and it's back panel is getting hot he wants to send it to service center...No issues with this
Problem----->He bought a desire from Grey market(it is generally a place in India where all sort of imported stuff which is not released officially in India is available) But no worries as phone is under warranty...So we want to unroot the phone..I tried using WWE RUU(2.2) and HTC Asia(2.1) RUU but it's not working..I get error.
The intresting thing is the boot screen animation says Virgin mobile..So I "think" that the original rom must be of virgin mobile BUT when we bought phone,it was already unlocked i.e any sim can be inserted
So if I flash the phone with Virgin mobile RUU(2.1) will it be sim locked again and do I have to purchase unlock code again???
People please reply urgently...
Current roM---Aurex Tsense8.4
Hboot 0.83
S-ON
Also if I downgrade, will there be some slcd bricking isssue???
I guess the error would be to do with the CID? Would of helped that you put the error. If you get CID error then just make a Goldcard and run the RUU again. It shouldn't sim lock once you've unlocked it.

And even if it did sim-lock it, their is a sim unlock utility on the desire thread
But Meaple is correct

HTC Desire GSM SIM unlocking Cyanogenmod 7.1

Hi there,
I'm just after a method for unlocking my HTC Desire GSM without flashing back to a stock ROM.
I'm currently on Vodafone UK and I'd like to use an Orange sim.
My phone is rooted, s-off and running Cyanogen 7.1
I've tried using HTC_Desire_unlock_v0.9.5, which downloaded from somewhere on this site.
But the phone remains emergency calls only with the Orange sim (& a US T-moble sim)
I've got USB debugging on, and I've run the unlock programme from my PC, everything seems to work - the phone reboots in HBOOT and I get the success message in the PC window. I've tried with my Vodafone sim and the Orange one.
I have noticed an error message with both sims on the unlock programme window - Vodafone = returned error 95 and Orange = returned error 31
Thanks for your help
Have you tried mentioning this in the sim unlock utility thread? It's the only utility there is
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
restart in flymode
offen this doesnt work reflash. ( do nandbackup) first
Thanks, after much reading of the unlocking thread and installing ADB drivers, restarting lots of times. I'm still not too sure if I've unlocked my phone, as I've realised the Orange sim I was trying has expired - doh.
I've ordered a new one so when that arrives I should be able to determine if I've unlocked it.
