Aye, that friend would be me. PiLoT managed to knock the phone out of my hand completely by accident, but having checked a good few websites out there, I don't think that it has anything to do with what's happening.
There are several videos that demonstrate the problem, and a quick search of YouTube for "HTC Desire Camera Glitch" returns four or five relevant results. Most comments seem to say that a replacement phone is the answer, but it's a bit too specific for me to think that it's a hardware problem.
Any time I run my fingers across the back of the phone (over where the MicroSD card and SIM card are) at the same time I have "Mobile Network" enabled (i.e. GPRS), I get a weird splitting of the screen. It separates into its component colours - magenta, cyan, yellow - and scrolls to the side and/or splits into various "window panes". When GPRS is off, the problem is impossible to recreate, which is the part of the problem that makes me think twice about it being an out-and-out hardware issue.
The version details PiLoT posted below are correct for my device:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: 32.36.00.28u_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel: 2.6.29-c8d11160 ([email protected] #1)

I'm going to email O2 about this - I've got insurance for my phone, but since this falls under the category of a manufacturer's fault, I'm pretty sure I should be able to claim it under warranty.
I'd very much like to hear if anyone else with a Desire is able to replicate this issue, or if anyone here has had the issue, what steps they took to resolve it.
Alright, so I emailed O2 about this. They seem to acknowledge that it's a manufacturer's fault. Without openly saying "Yeah, we know about this", they didn't question me at all when I described the problem. They just said that they'd arrange a brand new Desire to be sent out to me.
They're doing a door step exchange, which means that I'm giving back everything but my SIM card. The email even said that it'd be a brand new phone, meaning I get the joy of unboxing the Desire for the second time.
Only disadvantage is that the rest of the UK think that Moray is part of the Highlands, so nothing gets here on Next Day Delivery. They say it'll be here on Wednesday, but I'm waiting for the confirmation email from the courier (think they said DPD).
Also, finding out that removing all personal details and info from the Desire is a bit of a daunting task. The backup feature apparently encrypts your data, meaning it can only be used again with that specific phone. Not to mention the fun I'm going to have wiping the microSD card... hoping there's a feature on the phone for that, rather than having to whip it out and pop it into an adapter for my laptop.
Will keep this thread up to date with the various happenings over the next few days.
I have the same camera problem with my HTC Desire . Is there any solution for the problem or is it better to send it back to HTC?
I had same problem with my camera, and i gave it to HTC service and they replaced camera, and some connectors..i forgot which...
And no more problems with camera!
I had a random one where half the screen went green and showed a completly different angle. Very weird but only happened the once..so far
I have the same camera problem with my HTC Desire . Is there any solution for the problem other than sending it back to HTC?
Although this is an old topic, I wanted to state my experience...
I'm using this device for some time now, and I've experienced this issue couple of times. Rebooting, deleting the camera app info or changing roms didn't help particularly but somehow it turned back to normal with unresolved question... Why does this happen?
I began to have this issue again last week, I'm a frequent flasher so I thought another flash may solve the issue but no... nothing changed.
Than I uncovered the battery compartment, and start to clean the camera lens while watching the camera display...
I felt-hear a click sound and voila coincidentally the view was bright and clear as first day.
The it hit me I dropped my phone last week in hurry while taking a note... Camera device must be disconnected or loosened hence the the tint or pruple effect...
Any how I would like to share this as an experience...
Have try...

I second this fix. I uncovered the back of my phone and press on the camera until it clicked. Voila problem solved.

Hi,
For two days I have had a serious problem with my HTC P3300 Artemis:
There are actually 3 different things that happen:
1. The phone freezes while working. No idea what causes it. Happened at different occasions.
2. The phone doesn't wake up when I hit the wake-up-button.
3. Often while rebooting the screens whites out or whites out and gets green or purple vertical lines.
In each case only removing the battery helps.
I use Mossisrom as my OS.
Can anybody tell me how to fix the problem? Is it a hardware or software problem? Please help me!!!

I get the problem about waking up too. Sometimes it won't for a while. I leave it a couple of seconds and then try again which usually works.
Have you checked how much free internal memory you have. WM seems to still be very sensitive to low memory.
Hi,
I am rather sure that it's not a memory issue. The system freezes completely, not just for some seconds. I can't call the phone either. I think its either a SW or a HW problem and hoped, someone could tell me what to do.

I can only suggest resetting the ROM back to a standard one and seeing if you still get the problems. If you do, it is probably a hardware problem and you should get the phone replaced.
I had the exact same problem with my P3300. It's a malfunction in the Motherboard. I've called the dutch helpdesk and because a hard reset didn't do much good the PDA was picked up later that day to be sent to Eurotwice, the repair station in Belgium. I got my phone back 2 weeks later, I started it and it froze again! So I immediatly called HTC Netherlands and again, the P3300 was picked up by UPS that afternoon. The second time I wrote a letter to the repair station and sent it with my phone. In another topic on another website I read that some other phone with the same problem had been fixed by replacing the motherboard. I got my phone back today and it works great! It hasn't crashed today, and I have confidence it won't in the future. So my tip to you and anyone who experiences this problem: Call the HTC helpdesk in your country and ask them to sent your PDA to a repair station. It might take a while but they fix it well! By the way, you have 2 years full garantee so it didn't cost me anything! Great service from HTC!
Wow, you had a great experience from HTC . I didn't. I had the exact same problem as posted. HTC claimed I broke the phone myself and wanted to charge me. They claimed something broke behind the screen and that I must've pressed it too hard, despite the screen still being intact. After three months of phone calls to the UK and a lot of empty promises (promised to get a manager to call me back, never got them. promised to discuss with repair dept and call me back, never got them) I finally got my phone back , fixed. No explanation as to why they changed their mind. I had asked them to take a picture for me of what was broken and to how they came to the conclusion that I was the one who broke it. Maybe they were too lazy to do it.
(I created a thread because it's more than just a small annoyance)
Hello,
I have my new Desire (unbranded, French, 1.15.405.4) since yesterday, and I have experienced problems with my camera.
The picture would randomly be partly pink, and sometimes the image would be scrambled (like a puzzle, with the left side of the picture on the right and vice versa, upside down, and some squares colored pink).
The funny thing is that it sometimes ends up in the picture/video (picture attached), and sometimes it's just a visual glitch, the picture ends up fine.
I suspect a software glitch, but still, i have asked for a standard exchange, will have a new Desire on monday, just hope that it will work fine.
Anyone experienced this problem?
Here is a video I just took: w w w.y o u t u b e.com/watch?v=9yOoAnwAlck
I think thats a hardware problem. If a hard reset of the phone does not fix it, go for an exchange as soon as possible. If you only have the phone less than a week there should ne no problem swapping it.
That exact thing happened to me once on a ported 2.1 rom on the Hero.
Same thing has happened to me only had phone 4 days, mine is a French import aswell from a buymobiles.net O2 upgrade..... Not Happy..
desire and nexus one are so pink maniaks....
I'm having the same problem. As far as I found it happens when light conditions are bad. My desire is unbranded Eu version 1.15.405.4. I also uploaded video - youtube.com/watch?v=G7CIpVUwxL8
Ive had this once a couple of weeks ago, and I had it about half a dozen times a couple of days a go.
Interesting to learn its might be due to poor light conditions.
same here, and my Desire is just two weeks new.
Do you know if it's an hardware or firmware problem?
I would say hardware, since I got a replacement, and couldn't manage to reproduce the problem on the new one (fingers crossed).
Threads stating this problem are starting to pop-up on every forum I know.. It looks like a more widespread problem than I first thought.
Ok, so I returned my phone still in DOA period.
My problems were the glitching all over the place, and not just once a day, but it kept on getting worse, youtube, camera, browser, status bar, apps, multitasking, scrolling, keyboard, jumping white line in messages,etc...
Mine also was creaking arround the front camera and part of the corner of the screen there too.
My battery was displayed wrong all the time, so I couldn't see the right %.
Yellow bottom of on the screen.
Games were lagy, Tegra 3 and normal like teeter.
1 dead pixel.
Probably forgetting some problems now.
Somethings will be software, but because I(and most of us) don't know what is software I preffered to send it back before the doa period was over. Also some posters stated htv told them to send it back, witch problems same as mine.
Also if this is software for most of the part, than why isn't everybody getting the problems.
So I made this topic so you can tell what the problem was with your first device, and if you allready had your second (or third, etc) and what improved and what stayed the same... So you can we get a better vision on that.
My first phone arrived yesterday and is getting swapped out by a currier tomorrow for what will then be my second device.
The problems I am having is the jumping/bumping at the bottom of the screen; this is very inconsistant but does happen more often than it doesn't. For instance I was using the phone for 40 mins earlier it was happening, then for 10 mins it wasn't, again it happened for 5/6 mins and then didn't happen for around an hour but again its happening as we speak.
I've also had the problem whereby you can't unlock the device by pulling up the ring, and I have to shut down and startup the phone for this to be fixed. This has only happened twice so far; but again should not happen at all.
Lastly I have had the problem that when you lock the device the screen turns back on, even when you only pressed the lock button once.
I think thats everything... I do believe its software problems more than hardware, however as you have said why isn't this happening to everyone if that's the case. I guess you could look at it that maybe it is but they are either living with it or reporting it direct to where they purchased it from; either way they are not posting it on here. Who knows?
Now I do understand bugs are there in just about every phone and to be honest they are normally bugs you can live with until an update; the problem here is that the bugs are completely preventing the use of the device and/or making the use of the device very difficult. No phone should be released with this being the case.
One thing I do know for sure is that its happening to those who got the phone from a network (mines from Vodafone) and those who got it SIM free; in all areas or the world. This means they (Vodafone, Orange, O2 etc...) have not caused these problems so it eliminates any tweaks/software they may have placed onto the device meaning the problems do entirely lie with HTC to resolve. Lets just hope they do; or more importantly lets just hope its a small number of phones that are affected and that our replacements are okay.
I will let you know tomorrow what the second one is like... (sorry for the long post),
How did u notice a dead pixel
Sent From My HTC sensation (desire with rcmix s )
Phone turning back on after i pressed power button to lock the screen, got that too. But happens at random, so not always.
I saw a very tiny shiny spot when in a complete dark room, on a black background. Dead pixel i suppose.
Im considering getting it online but not sure what to do if i get a dead pixel
Sent From My HTC sensation (desire with rcmix s )
Send mine back because one of the 2 yellow spots didn't go away after 10hrs screen on (5 days) and I had some random restarts.
I don't want a faulty device, some devices will keep giving problems while others have no issues from the start.

You would be able to send it back if you bought it online, just like buying it from a shop. They have to give you the same period of support...

Have you had the replacement device; how is that getting on?
A few users have reported a Blank Screen of Death, with myself included.
The problem being that the phone's display doesn't switch on when you wake up the device. At this time, Everything else will including the Digitizer and Capacitive buttons.
I have spoken with HTC service centers across Australia and NZ to come to the conclusion that this is a motherboard problem. The infamous flickering issue seems to be involved also, which ends up shorting out the video driver.
The issue isn't just limited to the screen not displaying anything either, there's also the possibility that the back light will cut out, and sometimes leading to corruption on the display.
This isn't just with some devices either, it seems like anyone that has had the screen flickering issue are at risk of this.
To give you an idea of how much it costs to fix this issue, I was quoted at $250 AUD for just the motherboard alone.
The best part is, HTC may also deny your warranty for unlocking your bootloader, as they have with me.
I'll be posting more information as it develops.
EDIT 29/07/12 :: I'm going to request a transcript of my last conversation with HTC but until then, they're denying that this is a problem and saying that it's the user's fault. How? We use our phones to much, or inappropriately.
It's becoming obvious that they're trying to avoid spending anymore money fixing these issues, and have decided just to move on and release a new One X model. (according to news sources.)
Also, Boobinator just posted a video of the One X's screen corrupting while it isn't stuck under the BSOD which you can see here and here
Just to recap.
When the initial issues were found with screen flickering and corruption on the display, we were told it was a software issue.
Many months later, I along with many of you are still experiencing it, even though it's not nearly as bad as it once was.
Now there are growing reports that One X's are starting to lose their displays, and the poly-carbonate weakening and bending the antenna pins. (You can find more information here)
This is something you should all be aware about when purchasing this phone.
Best of luck!

Maybe us in America can file a class action lawsuit? I'm no lawyer here but anyone with better understanding of American consumer laws chime in?
This is problem that occurs with normal usage of the phone.
Another day, another hardware issue. HTC is going down the drain, im hugely disappointed in the way they are handling this mess. Improper testing, too slow to fix problems or ignore/deny them. Bull**** games about unlocking and warranty and now they are already talking about releasing more phones. Its easier for them to move on to a new model than to do the right thing and do a complete recall. Is this a QC issue or a design flaw, with all the negative reports I'm thinking its the latter.
HTC better handle this properly, they need to stop development on all new products untill this is solved.

Can u please send me details about the store that sells the motherboard ?
I have the same problem...and I need my phone fixed !
Thx
Is this the same flickering that happens in some ROMs when you rotate the phone?
Mine too
This just started happening to mine Nothing displayed on the screen, but it still responds to inputs. Even rebooting into fastboot, same problem. So everything is functioning except the display.
Have just handed it back to vodafone for repair, don't like my odds with the unlocked bootloader though :/
I had this issue on Viper or Android Revolution, but not on other ROMs. But I'm starting to get wifi issue, scratches, scratches on camera lins. I should buy S3, not this.

sent it back because of flickering. I just hope they will fix the problem properly and change the motherboard.

This happened to my Incredible S too if any one's interested.....
I'm not buying the HOX, I'm sorry. There's just too many different issues for too many people with this phone. It's an expensive top of the line phone, that does appear to be pretty shoddy put together. I don't care if it's under warranty and I have dumbass-insurance if I break it, but I can't send my phone inn all the time even if it's free. You shouldn't have to send it in at all.......
I presume now know we know why HTC is loosing money, market share and their stocks are going down....
This happened to me too, about a month ago, the phones been in repair since then(1 month, are you freaking kidding me HTC). I also unlocked the bootloader, lets see whether HTC charges me or not.
Also, I managed to get the display to work(somewhat) after shaking the device a bit. But even after that the display wont work properly, I even have 2 short videos of the screen acting weird when i got it to work. Here they are - Video 1 Video 2
Sorry for the ****ty quality, got it on my iphone. This was after I shook the device and the display magically started working. Even with the display working you can see it is really weird, even unresponsive at times.
So guys, there are a lot of places you can buy motherboards from, but they will charge you a lot more than what it's worth mainly because of the shortage within HTC.
I'm so sorry all of you are going through this, but i think we need to raise awareness of this issue. People are buying these phones without realizing there's a good chance they're going to have either bad WiFi antenna's or even a bad motherboard.
Send this to your friends, post it around, contact HTC.
Best of luck!
I am having this problem as well, as well as the WiFi antenna issue. The WiFi antenna somehow bent itself somehow, because after a while it was back to normal signal strength, so I didn't feel like sending the phone away for a month. But now with this screen issue it really is unusable, so it seems I don't have a choice anymore

Heat damage.
I doubt it's heat damage, i hardly played games on mine and it had that problem. I think the most i played was Triple Town, and that was it.
Also, wouldn't it be a massive problem if it was heat damage? That means the tegra 3 processor can't handle stress, and given that the phone inherently has heating issues, this just draws the conclusion that the Tegra 3 is bad news?
it may be a faulty soc
From what I've heard, it's been linked directly to the flickering screen problem. Which could mean that the first batch of One X's have all faulty Soc's? I mean, it's not uncommon for there to be manufacturing difficulties for the first few batches, but this is just absurd.

Not all of the first batch flickered. Stop exaggerating.
Hey,
Before I go any further, yes I have checked for other threads relating to the issue I am experiencing an could not find any that were completely relevant to my situation (I know how annoying and time consuming duplicate threads get! haha).
So I am with Telstra (Australia) currently running the 4.1.1 (JRO03C) Build. It is rooted and (Currently) running leanKernel-4.0.0dev14-jb. Prior to this I was running Franco's kernel. More or less, after waiting for Franco to push out a stable build for his mod, I decided I would try out the LeanKernel that is included through his Updater (So much quicker than the recovery way, I love it!). However, I just had to be unfortunate enough to do this during that 12 hour window in which the Franco Kernel Updater was experiencing a bug when flashing LeanKernel. After installing and rebooting, the phone would not start. It would just sit there at the splash screen, I set to work resolving it but ran into issues where the boot-loader was saying that there was no 'Boot' or 'Recovery' partitions. This was peculiar because I could still access CWM. So I eventually fixed it by pushing the Stock Kernel to it Via Fastboot and re-applying all the Bootloader and Radio images. (Another small fact, regardless of what Kernel I flash to it, it still seems to say LeanKernel.)
Now, the phone worked fine and Dandy for a few days, I did not even loose my data in the process - Was exactly the same as before. However just out of nowhere it lost signal. I immediately try powercycling it - did not fix the issue. So I then cleaned the SIM card and all the usual but it still could not acquire said reception (I also swapped SIM with a friend and my SIM worked in his without fault). I proceed over the next few hours feverishly mixing and matching all kinds of Radio's, Kernels, Settings, Supposed Patches and Fixes to no avail. The signal would come and go seemingly at will. I also fully reset the device and that did very little to improve the situation apart from render the phone slightly more responsive. And the thing is, its not as if it is saying it still has reception - the representation bars literally disappear completely.
Im at wits end with it, I had a HTC Dream when i was at school and spent weeks upon weeks figuring out how to carry out the Basics of a PowerUser Equivalent (Rooting, ROM FLASH, Radio's, Kernels, Overclocks, Diagnosing Software errors - the works) but this one has me gob smacked. Any help would be greatly appreciated, please let me know if you guys believe I may have forgotten a step or something obvious (Hiding in plain sight haha).
Thanks!
THEfog
Anyone? Any feedback appreciated.
Fixed.
Alright, So I waited for somebody to reply to my question but it seems like everybody has better things to do. Eventually I resolved the problem.
I take no responsibility if you destroy your phone by disassembling it incorrectly.
I exhausted all possible software related troubleshooting, so I decided to tear it apart. After following the iFixit Guide for disassembling the Nexus (ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Teardown/7182/1) to Step 7 and removing the Headphone Jack/Speaker Assembly, I then noticed that my Coaxial Antenna cable had been pinched by the plastic mounts that it sits in. Due to the way it had been pinched and where the mount was - I was confident in assuming that I must have dropped it one to many times (i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j345/THEfog101/WP_000002-edit.jpg) causing the plastic rails to compress the cable.
Due to the small size of the cable - it was beyond repair, however I did manage to get it partially working as a interim solution. I separated the plastic shielding from the cable and re-rolled the inner cabling to the best of my ability. I then re-applied the plastic shielding and sealed it in wax. After re-assembling the phone (i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j345/THEfog101/WP_000011.jpg) it was getting reception, however it did sporadically drop under heavy usage (Lots of Data Usage Etc).
I Hunted around for the replacement cable (Was a lot easier than I thought It would be) when I found a supplier in the US, it proudly stated it was for the global model so I was confident it would work with my Australian model (cellphone-repair-shop.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-global-antenna-coax-cable/). It was a little bit more pricey than I thought, but it was still a heck of a lot cheaper than buying another Galaxy Nexus (~$500).
The Cable came (i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j345/THEfog101/IMG_20120828_171935.jpg) and I fitted it the next day, simply taking the old one off and replacing it with the one I received in the mail - nothing else needed to be done. Since fitting the new antenna the Nexus now receives full reception again does not suffer any drops in service. (i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j345/THEfog101/WP_000020.jpg).
I hope this helps any others that suffer an issue similar to this. Sticking it may not be a bad idea either - simply because I could not find any other DIY fix to this issue online.
P.S Sorry about the non hyperlinked URL's, it wont let me post them because I have not posted here 10 times, despite me having been a member for quite some time.
Thanks!
Nice job, you know your stuff. Glad you got it fixed.
PS: the posting limits are based on the number of posts you have, not the date you have registered at XDA.
Thanks, It was a good opportunity to learn a little more about the internals of the phone as well. But yeah, I figured that was the case when it kept em blazing that message across the top of the page in large obnoxious letters whenever I tried to post with URLs embedded haha
