Ok, i was really pissed at HTC beause of the whole HTC Hero 2.1 issue, but since i got the offer to get an HTC Desire for only 300 Euros without contract i couldn't say no.
Now i have a few questions for those people who already have the Desire:
1. I know that i can use some kind of .apk to be able to switch to the regular Android home. Will HTC Sense then start less apps on startup? Because as far as i know, you won't be able to use HTC Widgets with the regular Android home so i was hoping that this also means less stuff being automatically started all the time (like HTC Footprints).
2. Does rooting the TMobile HTC Desire already work? How complicated is the process? I'm not a smartphone newbie, but haven't rooted an Android device yet.
3. I read that rooting the Desire caused some "random bricking" even if everything was done correctly. Is this issue still there?
4. If i root my device, and install FroYo, what will happen if there is a new update? Can i install new updates OTA or do i have to wait until the community provides the new version?
5. How easy is it to switch back to stock rom, if i realize that i prefer HTC Sense?
Thanks for your Help!

THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY TO START WITH SENSE UI OR STANDARD ANDROID HOME.

DON'T WORRY ABOUT ROOTING. IT'S EASY FOR A "NORMAL" SMARTPHONE USER THAT HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF LINUX WORLD.

YOU CAN GO-BACK TO OFFICIAL HTC ROM USING RUU SOFTWARE
5. How easy is it to switch back to stock rom, if i realize that i prefer HTC Sense?
VERY EASY USING RUU

Dear All
I am a NOOB. Got my HTC Desire a few weeks ago and it didn't take long to hit the stupid app installation limit of internal memory. Now every time I want to install an app I have to remove an old one. Not pretty.
My question is simple:
1) What is the SAFEST, BEST way to root an Orange-branded HTC Desire?
2) What is the easiest way to enable app installation on memory card and is it possible without rooting?
3) What is the best way to back up the phone before rooting (since it presumably factory resets the phone)
4) Is there a good ROM that has HTC Sense AND Froyo with ALL hardware and software features working?
I have trawled the net and I know answers to these questions are floating all around, I just want the DEFINITIVE version.
Thanks in advance!I hope someone will answer.
Answer:
1. your answer can be found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
2. only possible with root or wait for offical froyo
3. Just back up your sd card. You can go back using RUU
4. I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
no problem so far.
Once you root, you wont regret

I recommend you my ROM which is in the process of uploading.
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729716
It looks like HTC Sense Android 2.2 ROM but with percent battery (can be reverted to stock battery). It also has the option of installing ExpressoBar mod which makes the Sense UI look better. It has A2SD+ which lets you install apps to SD by default. It also has access to ALL Android apps in the market. If you don't like it you can simply change it to another Sense Android 2.2 ROM.
Thanks very much guys. Actually search button is too good since it also confuses. I sincerely appreciate the help. Lolly your rom sounds amazing. Guess I will be giving it a shot. Just one more question. How about unrevoked
Hi guys.
I am about to buy a HTC Desire tomorrow.
It is SOFTWARE-Branded to T-Mobile and has Android 2.1
But i dont want a T-Mobile Software-Branding and i want Android 2.2 (and 2.2 with all features ...) so i would like to flash to a Android 2.2 ROM where i dont have any branding and all features (Tethering ...)
So i guess i am searching for a way to make my Android 2.1 T-Mobile to a "rooted" Android 2.2 without branding and with all features.
How do i do this guys?
Im new to Flashing and ROMs and i never used Android before.
I hope u can help me until tomorrow
Greetings

-Is there any way to extract and save my Android 2.1 by T-Mobile to restore it in case of a faild upgrade or warranty stuff?

1) no you wont if you mean sense ui.. that just depends if you want a custom ROM.. just read to see if its a sense ui, or a non- sense ui ROM..
2) no need! just run a correct RUU file to unroot and get your warrenty back! and before rooting you will probobly do a nandroid back up, so all's good
OK THX guys!
Another important question:
What is a good Android 2.2 ROM?
I first root my Android 2.1 T-Mobile by using unrevoked3 for excample.
Then i Flash Android 2.2 Froyo Stock - and then i root it again?
Is that right? But which ROM do i take if i want Android 2.2 with all Features?
I dont want a special ROM, just Android 2.2, Radio, and able to install my own Apps
Can i use this one?

Or is it better do use a rooted-Stock-Froyo and use the Update-Packs for Undervolting, Newest Flash Player and Stuff?
XXX://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997&highlight=undervolt
Im thinking about The pre-rooted stock Froyo and use the Mods: PowerPack and FlashPlugin
Do what I did. Buy phone via contractor like mobile phones direct. I've ordered 600 min 500 txt and free internet but they gave me 900/500 and 1 gb of net that was capped. After I've received the phone I've emailed tmobile and said that mpd miss leaded me and I only have 1gb net of capped hsdpa but in t&c it says that it should be 3gb and complained about the speed. Next day they rang me and unlocked everything . And more importantly desire is unbranded so I had froyo update when it arrived.... Hope this helps.. Still have warranty and at the moment font need rooting
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Correct me if I'm wrong, but unlocking a phone still doesn't make it unbranded, as it has the customized software. However, this could trigger the update notification, which then would start the update process for FW2.2.

Tmobile-Devices are unlocked but not rooted.
I want to root my device and then flash to Android 2.2 with all features and without Tmobile Software Branding

Can i also use "unrevoked3" to root my branded Desire and then flash a custom / original ROM?
unrevoked3 seems so much easyer to me
Quote:
Does unrevoked3 give me root?
Yes. It previously did not; as of version 3.0, it does.
What does this do, then?
unrevoked3 will replace the stock Android recovery with a custom one, which adds many features including “nandroid” backups, the ability to use custom ROMs, and a greater amount of flexibility and customization of your Android phone.

hi i am a complete newbie to android and htc desire i haven't even got the phone yet but i am getting it this week (been paying it off)
it is as far as i am aware a Telstra HTC Desire A8183
i assume it has the stock android 2.1 on it and i would like to root the phone and install a custom rom on it i don't need all the bells and whistles i just want to get rid of all the telstra crap apps on it
i am a telstra prepaid customer and would like to use their nextg network so i need a custom rom hopefully at least 2.2 froyo (i assume there is no gingerbread one yet for the htc desire)
and would like to use most all the features i can on the phone
can someone give me a android for dummies guide for rooting the phone and installing a custom rom that will work well on this (i assume telstra branded) htc desire
if you could suggest a good rom to use on this too would appreciate it
also can i ask when installing a custom rom is it installing on a microsd card on on the phone's actual memory
does it replace the default rom on there and is it better to run the rom on the microsd card or on the phones onboard memory (performance and reliability wise)
sorry for all the questions but as i said complete newbie and just get more confused the more i read on the site i need some clear step by step instructions
on how to do these things and suggestions for the right rom for my phone
thanks
1. Search the forum, everything you need is on here (and it's also Rule no. 1 of the forum)
2. When you get the phone, just use it as you may find rooting it isn't needed
Hi
I have a Desire on Vodafone which came with 2.2 and it works fine. I've seen 2.3 available on the htc developers site and according to their blurb I understand this would remove a lot of the bloatware. Would it be correct to assume that this would mean more memory for apps that I actually want to run?
I'm afraid I'm not very experienced with reflashing etc and would prefer not to go down that route because of warranty issues etc.
If I were you, i'd steer clear of the update. It's unstable and it's a bit of a task to get back to 2.2 once you'd upgraded (especially as you've mentioned that you've not got much experience with flashing).
It does remove bloatware and may give you a little more room with improved A2SD, but i'd personally install a FROYO 2.2 RUU - this would remove the branding.
As you've currently got a Vodafone branded device, you'll need to make sure that you create a goldcard.
I'd take a read through some of the tutorials on this site to get you started.
Thanks for that Matt, as you may have gathered my real issue is frreing up memory for apps. Can anyone tell me how easy the mod to to enable use some of the sd card is and which yje best ie easiest way to do that might be.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
the warranty issue is well, non existent. let me explain..
If you do decide to root and use a custom ROM, and all of a sudden your Desire develops a hardware glitch, all one has to do is use a RUU (Rom Update Utility) to restore the phone back to stock, and nobody will be none the wiser about what's been done to it before.
So personally, I'd recommend rooting and flashing a custom ROM. Since you're used to HTC Sense I'd try leedroid.
Also, even though it has some removed bloatware, I think that the 2.3 update actually comes with even less space than Froyo.
Anyone else get stuck with the warning triangle / sign with green android bot logo figure on reboot after OTA 2.3.5?
HTC seems to block the official OTA update to android 2.3.5 on rooted phones:

Should we reverse engineer the updater to remove the blocking check or do we have a full stock rom for EU with this update to flash using

Who needs OTA? We have the stock RUU here already.
But did anyone seriously expect a different behavior?
HTC won't unlock the WFS bootloader as we already know... so how can anybody expect they would allow OTA updates on rooted phones?
Since I own HTC Android phones I never saw an OTA update working on a rooted or debranded phone (HTC Tattoo, HTC Desire, HTC Wildfire, HTC Wildfire S).
Before rooting or debranding (unbranding) everything is fine. When we "cross the line" we are on our own.
Any updates must be installed by us. Anyway that shouldn't be difficult to do...
IMHO that should be simple to understand.
I guess installing a modified recovery and then expecting for a free software update would be like showing the middle finger to HTC and still asking for candy.
Android is "open source" software but only until some extent. HTC puts a lot of modifications on their releases (mainly Sense and some addons).
If we want to "kit" or "mod" or phones we should be conscious of what we're doing.
The price to pay for being impatient or for wanting to have complete control of our devices is now pretty obvious.
I'm not saying I agree with this... on the contrary! HTC should unlock the booloader and let us do what we want.
However if we decide to take that path it's our problem.
If I put myself on HTC's boots I understand that rooting/debranding/modifying recovery is a valid reason for voiding warranty and locking future updates. With an user modified phone there is no guarantee that HTC can predict what will happen during the update process.
If something goes wrong there are possibly too many variables involved that are out of their control.
Just my two cents... sorry for my long posts mates.

I don't understand why people buy HTC phones which are mainly "famous" because of Sense and then want to get rid of it.
It's like buying a Ferrari and removing the logo with the horse.
If I wanted a plain Vanilla Android phone there would be plenty of cheaper solutions available. Many of them with custom roms being developed.
So why buy HTC and remove it's main feature?
This is obviously just my opinion. No flaming intended.
Well, it was my first smartphone ever, and what I got for 200€ is a nasty brick of bugs with hours extra work of fixing.
This piece of crap is not even capable of setting the clock correctly without rooting.
Then comes a update and they block my phone.
I'm really fed up of HTC "Quality", and want most of their "commercialware" removed now.
I will never buy any HTC again. I've had it.

The RUU
Kind of off-topic, but on topic for the RUU update. Is it possible to installed Data2SD on this and be greater then 2 GB?
No, it's an official update.

Or just disable automatic update check..
