Hi
I have a Desire on Vodafone which came with 2.2 and it works fine. I've seen 2.3 available on the htc developers site and according to their blurb I understand this would remove a lot of the bloatware. Would it be correct to assume that this would mean more memory for apps that I actually want to run?
I'm afraid I'm not very experienced with reflashing etc and would prefer not to go down that route because of warranty issues etc.
If I were you, i'd steer clear of the update. It's unstable and it's a bit of a task to get back to 2.2 once you'd upgraded (especially as you've mentioned that you've not got much experience with flashing).
It does remove bloatware and may give you a little more room with improved A2SD, but i'd personally install a FROYO 2.2 RUU - this would remove the branding.
As you've currently got a Vodafone branded device, you'll need to make sure that you create a goldcard.
I'd take a read through some of the tutorials on this site to get you started.
Thanks for that Matt, as you may have gathered my real issue is frreing up memory for apps. Can anyone tell me how easy the mod to to enable use some of the sd card is and which yje best ie easiest way to do that might be.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

the warranty issue is well, non existent. let me explain..
If you do decide to root and use a custom ROM, and all of a sudden your Desire develops a hardware glitch, all one has to do is use a RUU (Rom Update Utility) to restore the phone back to stock, and nobody will be none the wiser about what's been done to it before.
So personally, I'd recommend rooting and flashing a custom ROM. Since you're used to HTC Sense I'd try leedroid.
Also, even though it has some removed bloatware, I think that the 2.3 update actually comes with even less space than Froyo.

Hi All,
long time reader, 1st time poster,
i have switched from the nexus to the desire, and i have seen lots and lots of diffrent roms for the desire, so i was wondering if i may ask your assistance in locating the best one?
which rom most people prefer ?
what advantages does X rom have over X rom ?
i currently have a desire running 2.2 froyo if there is anyone else switching which could suggest a good switch ?
Hi,
I'm fairly new to this whole rooting business myself and certainly not an expert on advising which is is the 'best'. A lot would depend on your needs and preferences. For my use, however, I found the ROM at :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
to be very stable and to my liking. It is virtually the same as an OTA update of Froyo, except it is rooted and has some miner modifications.
Read a lot and try different Roms; I'm sure you'll find one to your liking and needs.
Hi Mag,
Thanks for your advice, it sounds like a nice easy starting mod,
btw how did you root the phone to start with ?
i have tried the current REVOked client but that seems to fail each time.
so i was debating sitting back and waiting for REVOkeds new 3.2.1 client to be released for download.
Here is what I did with my very limited knowlage about rooting:
1. I made my working sd card into a 'gold card'. Not sure if that was necessary or not, but it couldn't hurt.
2. I downgraded from OTA froyo to the 2.1 version.
3. Then rooted my phone using Unrevoked3.
After that I was able to update to any rom using clockworks recovery only.
Everything went very smoothly for me without any hickups.
You can find all the needed details about the individual procedures above, on this great site. Search and you will find .
Hope this is of some help.
Mag
PS.: Unrevoked at, http://unrevoked.com/#inc, is suposedly working on a new version that is able to root Froyo without having to dowgrade to 2.1 first.
Unrevoked's rooting solution is already out for the Desire FYI
Here is the link for it
http://unrevoked.com/
Be advised that they have removed the current version because it had some issues with the Evo 4G but the older 3.2 is still up and flawless for the Desire.
Unrevoked Desire
Sadly I had major driver issues with my current PC and couldnt root my phone as of yet.. but will do it in a couple of days when i get my new PC So I cant provide feedback as of yet... But the Wiki page of Unrevoked has pretty much everything covered up for you
Hope I helped a little
yeah the current version means you need to downgrade to 2.1. but id rather go straight into rooting, than mess about with downgrading 1st.
I've had my Desire (Bravo) for a long while now and I've been using the LeeDroid Rom's ever since Froyo was released and T-Mobile weren't forthcoming with a 2.2 of their own.
I've recently recieved an OTA from what I can only assume is T-Mobile with their 2.2 release.
when trying to install it, it had signature errors. I then disabled Signiture auth in the clockwork recovery settings, then it had assert errors.
i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong or if i can actually load this OTA rom at all?
I guess my question is.. how easy is it for me to return my Desire to stock? I've been having recurring issues with downloads and updates from the market refusing to download successfully etc and its starting to annoy me.
Whilst waiting for this reply i'm going to do a full wipe of my phone and install the LeeDroid 2.2f_A2SD to see how that goes.
Many thanks to any of you that help/suggest.
NOTE: yes i have looked at the unroot section in the guide in this forum but I am not completely savvy with the Goldcard thing. (I've never had need to use one before)
You can't install OTA updates on a custom ROM, they are only applicable to stock ROMs
To go back to stock, download this RUU and just run it with HTC Sync showing connected on your PC:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_127570_signed.exe
Once done, you should be prompted to get the OTA updates. This WILL wipe your phone, mind

Many thanks Eddy, This clears it up a little for me. Though I'm abit apprehensive to do this as i hear some RUU's disable the ability to root?
you cant get ota updates if your phone is rooted.
in order to get your phone back to be not rooted you need to install using RUU.
but I dont recomend on doing that, because if the ota update was importent enough thay would put it on the next rom, just download a new rom, maybe AuraxTSense
For some people, custom ROMs just aren't that important - me being one of them
Same for me, I'm not that bothered about having a custom ROM if T-Mobile have now released a valid 2.2
Sooner or later you will be disappointed, as froyo doesn't solve the low memory problem at all...
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
eh? what low memory problem? Froyo is much faster and stable than the 1.6. the 1.6 suffered if you have more than 3 apps open. froyo only seems to suffer once you have more than 10?
Agree, but not comparing 1.6 to 2.2.
Saying "disappointed" I thought about the 135mb available to install applications on Desire - try to install Navigon, some Gameloft games and you are done.
Thing is that although having Froyo a2sd the memory is shrinking very fast.
ahh yes, I agree with you there, though I do beleive you should be able to set a auto install to SD if available. you can get rather large if abiet expensive SD cards nowdays so should alleviate those problems.

But not all apps can be moved to the SD card through FroYo A2SD. It depends on where the developer of the app wants it to be. But with A2SD+ available on many custom ROMs, all user apps will be installed in the SD card.
Excuse me for probably asking things that have been asked before, but I have not been active in this forum and I am really inexperienced with both Android and Desire.
I have had an HTC Desire on stock Orange UK ROM since the day the Desire was released. A couple of weeks ago or so, I did the official OTA to 2.2 and everything is fine.
However, I am growing increasingly tired of all the bloatware and crap Orange has installed on the mobile phone, and would do with trying some other non-stock 2.2 ROMs, including Cyanogen ports.
My question is simple:
Do users who have had the 2.2 OTA follow the same procedure as all other users, or do we first have to perform some other steps, such as downgrading to a stock or non-stock 2.1, etc?
Is the root/su process the same for 2.2 users? And finally, is there some 'false-proof'/'fool-proof' recovery image that we can install before we start meddling with our phone (and so that we can possibly restore to it for warranty claims?)
Just follow the guide on here for using unrEVOked 3.21 and you'll hopefully have no issues. Just bare in mind that doing this will mean until an Orange RUU is made available (if at all) you won't be able to send it to Orange under warranty should something go wrong
Can you please elaborate on what you mean by this?
Is there a way to create a NAND dump or some other way to have a back-up of the current image/ROM in the phone so that I can return to it if so desired?
Hi
I just got my Desire HD today, and got all itchy to start customizing it away, but I have a couple of questions first. Coming from HD2 here, which I mostly used with Android.
Unfortunately my DHD came with the new OTA, but I can see from the other forum that downgrading is not a problem anymore.
I'm concerned with two issues, mainly. First, I don't want to lose the advantages of the 1.72 update - I can see a lot of complaints about battery for example, while my battery seems to be just perfect. My question is, if I downgrade to 1.32, then root it, will I be able to get (through a custom ROM?) the advantages of 1.72? If so, which ROM are you using?
Also, I read somewhere (Go ahead and tell me if I've been misinformed) that people still don't have all the correct drivers for the GPU part (graphics) of the DHD processor. Is that true, and will I lose performance on that part with a custom ROM right now?
Thanks in advance for your reply, and I'm glad to be now part of this community
best,
shpatar.
When you downgrade there are a fe options for u upgrading to 1.72 again while retaining root. The key thing here is to either use a custom rom or flash only the system partition of the stock rom. Leedroid seems to be the most often recommended custom rom and he is indeed a very good developer.
The main battery savings are to be had from the new radio which again can be flashed without losing root.
I would start by reading the guides on downgrading and getting radio s-off and hboot s-off.
People will be happy to help if you get stuck but no one wants to repeat information which is already laid out in the guides.
With regards to the gpu there is no issue. What you have been reading about is that leedroid wants to play with the kernel to see if he can improve gpu performance even more. There is nothing wrong with performance now though.

Thanks mate, I'm going to downgrade right now and see what happens. Cheers
As mentioned by dr.m0x: the LeeDrOid rom is one you will see mentioned often when asked for a custom rom including the 1.72 update.
Also (as mentioned partially as well)....one of the key things (going forward) you want to know about is radio s-off, which will let you flash...well...just about anything...
Although now you may not see the use of it....before the 1.72 downgrade option, if you had radio s-off you would feel comfortable
Welcome to this community....it is a great place indeed and you'll see that the devs are quick in replying and other users are quick in responding as well....
It is a shame to say that I still use Android 2.2 with Kernel 2.6.32.21, Taiwan version since I bought the phone a year ago.
(Not until recently, I have decided to move on to Gingerbread because
I wanna use the the latest features in the NDK to write some C++ programs for Android.)
Without getting into trouble during/after rooting,
I tried an official OTA upgrade but it doesn't work.
I tried to ask HTC but they said they still don't have any official upgrade for my phone.
I am a newbie here in this forum,
Could anybody please kindly offer your help please?
It will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I wanna make my App!!!
swimd
If there is no official Gingerbread for your phone (which seems odd ?) then you can flash a different official GB ROM onto your phone. But normally your phone isn't going to let you do this, because it will fail the signature checks.
What you need to do is to de-brand your phone so that it doesn't do these checks any more. I will see if I can dig out a link to a guide and edit it into my post, unless someone else beats me to it.

Steviewevie,
Thank you for your help in advance!
I can't copy and paste the link right now, but use the Search function in the Android Dev forum to find the thread called "Debranding Bell Desire Z" (it doesn't only apply to Bell phones).

Thank you for the help!
I have found that thread!
BTW, after a quick look of the thread, it seems that S-off is recommended...
Do I need to get "root" in order to do so?
Should I do that to prevent future trouble?
Always recomend rooting phones right away, if you have a custom recovery and an enginering bootloader you can save tons of headaches in the future when problems arise (as they often do) this of course is outside the fact that a rooted phone is a happy phone and certainly not an apple

As demkantor said, getting S-OFF is a lot better because it gives you a lot more options for the future, even if you don't use those options straight away.
IMHO the only reason to use the goldcard method and not full S-OFF is if you are really worried about voiding your warranty or the S-OFF process yourself. But there's no need to worry really, since (a) you can easily reverse the process if you need to, and (b) lots of people here can help you through getting S-OFF (the XDA Wiki explains it very well, though it can look daunting at first).

+1 to the notion of just rooting the phone. Especially since if are software developer, I would think that you would want full control over your device. And if you have these type of skill, rooting will be easy.
As mentioned, root, S-Off etc. can be removed for warranty purposes, if that is the concern.
The Wiki method is generally accepted as the safest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
demkantor and all,
Thanks!!! ok, I am least I will go for S-OFF!
But, I need to be able to fully recover my OS and Apps,
I need to do some research on stock recovery and/or custom recovery...
Well, I think there is an official update to Gingerbread thou.. But I think dont think that version is in English as it is a Hongkong version.
