The GPRS transceiver in my 3 days old HTC Desire just packed in. Friday night it worked, Saturday morning, no more Internet connection over GPRS. Wifi still works fine, so does all other aspects of the phone.
Everything has been tested to ensure the problem is with the GPRS transceiver. Same SIM card in another Android phone works fine so it's not a problem with the carrier or SIM. Another SIM tried in the Desire also does not work. Full factory reset has been tried, still didn't work.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a common weakness in the HTC Desire?
It wasn't broken, just the APN (Access Point Names) had disappeared from the configuration by itself somehow. Re-entered and all is well.

I had this happen to me also. I think it was probably an app which did it.

I have the same problem. Tried to install different ROM`s but it seems that phone connectivity is gone. It is not able to connect to cellular network (searching connection forever) but BT and WIFI works fine as well as all other stuff. This is not an issue with location since I tried it in different places where other phones working fine and shows excelent signal.
Odd, my data connection suddenly quit yesterday as well (had the EVO series ROM loaded). I loaded on the new build from today and it worked for a few, but then stopped again.
Any ideas? I can make/receive phone calls, but the data connection is no longer responding.
nobody know ???
hmm, nobody know how to dissolve this problem or nobody care ??
just wondering what i can do with my phone - coz it is unuseless now.
As i read - i'm not only one with this troubles.

Just out of curosity what is shown in the "Access Point" under Connections/GPRS for your data settings?
try internet2.voicestream.com or epc.tmobile.com
I don't know what happen to my desire, the mobile internet just did not work!
Wifi is still functioning.
But when I clicked the mobile internet check box, it keeped showing turning on, but could not link to the 3g network.
Could anyone give me any suggestion? Thx!
I assume you're on Orange UK??
They got problems
I use Vodafone NL.
Actually the 3G worked pretty good until today. So I assume this might be some hardware problem. Can anyone help me or I need to bring it back to HTC?
you can try resetting the apn settings
settings -> wireless and networks ->mobile networks -> apn
click menu and select to reset it
if that doesnt work open up the phone dialer
enter *#*#4636#*#*
turn the radio off
wait 20 seconds
turn the radio on again
post back

Apologizing for my "assuming!.

Hi Bilbo Fraggins - I'm on Orange UK and I've noticed the response and service on my Desire has slowed down over the last week or so. It was perfect up to then for the first month. I'm also having issues with mail synchronisation through Exchange Active Sync but thats another topic.
Whats the problem with Orange? IS it a temproary thing? I was thinkingof calling them but thought it was probably just my device. Cheers.
I've had no mobile data at all since Wednesday night.
My last call to them was yesterday and they said their GPRS network was down or something but should be back within a couple of days.....
Having said that ....
I just reset my apn as above and I'm back in business
Thanks for the tip, seems it wasn't Orange, despite them saying it was ....
I've had my Desire for nearly a month now and the internet has been consistently inconsistent the entire time.
I'm on Orange UK... is it likely to be my network or my device? I can usually depend on GPRS but 3G/HSDPA are flaky at best with the standard rom and no changes to stock settings even though I'm in central Manchester.
I had a similar experience and I am also on Orange UK. My connection kept dropping and I even had problems getting a normal phone signal. I ended up hard resetting my phone and its working great again. No problems all day. It was easy to do too. I think it must've been a program I installed.

well this is annoying...
I checked my APN settings:
Name: Orange Internet
APN: orangeinternetapndroid
MCC: 234
MNC: 33
APN Type: defaultapndroid
and apparently they wont connect any more, these are my stock settings, in the morning I was connecting via GPRS, 3G, 3G+
This afternoon, no luck.
Weirdly, having conducted a search of these forums if I ammend to:
Name: Orange Internet
APN: orangeinternet
MCC: 234
MNC: 33
APN Type: default
the 3G, 3G+ icon appears in my taskbar as if connected, but none of the sync's work, neither does the internet.
can anyone throw any light on this?
Edit:I've tried a clean boot with no APN type controls launched and still cant connect, so its not a sotware APN control playing up.
Try turning off 3G connectivity and connect on 2G. It's likely something wrong with your mast. Something similar happened to me about 2 months ago. I'm not working at the moment, otherwise I would've checked on our network status systems for you.
had something similar when accidentally put "enable always-on mobile..." in mobile network settings. couldn't get sync weather or internet access
switched this off and all came back
thanks for the posts, I checked the 'always on' setting definately off.
I cant seemt o find an option to switch to GPRS only, can you point me in the right direction?
Happened to me today too, just left it of for an hour or so and it worked again.
I've been having the same problems all day. After struggling to find a solution I've finally just managed to get my data connection back.
Try going to wireless and network setting => mobile networks => access point names, then go the your main setting, mine says orange internet. I entered a proxy setting of 192.168.71.35 and a port setting of 8080. Save that, press back 3 times, turn off mobile network then turn it back on and see if that helps!
It worked for me, although the connection doesn't seem as fast as before.
I would advise against changing any of the APN settings. You can change your phone to GSM-only through Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > GSM only.
Settings on phones don't change themselves on their own. So if it's a problem with your connectivity, it's probably a network issue or something else (maybe hardware) with the handset, although that's unlikely.
@danflan74, the proxy you've entered might not be for the GPRS version of Orange Internet. You might be routing yourself through the WAP bit, hence the slowness. I can't say for certain, but that's seems likely to me. If not, then an extra layer of routing isn't doing it any good, as the "standard" settings do not use a proxy.
Tbh guys, I think it's just orange being their usual ****ty selves.

This was the original cause of your problem. Obviously you'd installed APNdroid at some point.
Strictly speaking, you don't really need this on Sense ROMs as there is a widget and a "shutdown" menu item for switching off the mobile network.

Dave
I had same problem today. Working now though. There was a message on orange customer services about problems with gprs and that they are working g to fix it.
Just wish I called them before I did factory reset.

Also had this problem today frustrating, all fine now
Looks like a load of people had this if Twitter is to be believed. My 3G wouldn't connect at all at one point.
I phoned orange earlier as i had no connectivity.
They have had network problems today. All fine now, For me anyway.
I've had all sorts of problems with orange the last few days. No incoming or outgoing calls or txts. Seems to be sorted today though.

I've been having the same issues all day, thought it might have been a network issue in Edinburgh City centre, but had decided it was [another] hardware fault in my Desire (it's been replaced once already).
Also very glad I waited before doing anything drastic!
I had the same problem on saturday. No signal for hours. Orange explained there was going to be some network issues due too the merging of tmobile & orange networks.

Orange had a large outage today for all apn's, it's nothing to do with your phone.

Juicedefender got me to install this'un so that I could switch the APN connection off 0:00 to 07:00.
on the upside to all of this, it was Orange being a pair of hairy testies. I got home having reverted my settings to stock and the 3g connection was working.
I can confirm I've had 3g/HDSPU dead connection problems all day from late morning, I'm on t-mobile UK with a non rooted Desire, and tried switching flight mode on and off, Enable always-on mobile- off. Ive heard T-mobile and Orange were merging early July. I hope the teething problems explains it or im in trouble.
I read on other forums it could be the software version. But i'm sensing the general consensus here is the service provider?
Hi, just got my One X a couple days ago. Things went fine until last night, suddenly the phone couldnt connect to the internet via data connection. Wifi is fine but 2G/3G gets connected and disconnected instantly. The H/3G/E and up and down arrows appears and disappears constantly.
I checked with my wife's phone which is using Android and also the same network provider but data connection was fine. So I did a hard reset but it didnt help. I installed another ROM but the problem still there.
Im thinking to have my SIM replaced by tomorrow. But before that, I wanna ask if anyone has seen any problem similar.
Thank you guys :good:
If you've tried a new Rom and checked your apn details already then it does sound like a SIM card issue.
Have you tried getting into Phone settings hidden menu? Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Select phone info, scroll down, and make sure radio type is set to wcdma preferred.

Yes, already did that too. So I guess I will have my sim card replaced then see how it will go. Thanks man

I'm having the same problems with some custom ROMs and I don't know what to do to fix it.
It works right with leedroid but I couldn't make it work with any CM.
I can be browsing the internet and then it goes back to 2G for 1 second and no connection any more.
I already tried the configuration with the dial number above and nothing seemed to work.
Thanks!
Just got my simcard replaced yesterday and now things are working fine. Yay!
Recently, some of my saved WiFi profiles no longer seem to save. Certain networks are remembered and connected to when in range, and some require me to re-enter credentials and everything every single time. It's as if I've never been on the network.
The phone is bone-stock and I believe the issue started after the latest OTA update. If it matters, the main network I'm having trouble with is 802.1x / ttls / pap.
Wondering if something about the update or Verizon apps I've disabled in the settings is borking some permissions with a wifi conf.
Any ideas?
no success fixing yet bump
Yeah, it's not related to the network. This network is @ a corporate office and every other of the 3000 devices on the network is doing fine

Just moved from Viper 5.7 to bonestock 3.02 and can't get it to remember home wif password after a reboot as well. Has anything changed for others affected? It happens with some ROMs for me. FWIW, wife's unrooted One has same issue. Luckily for us we have a dual radio router and thus can use the 5 GHz side.
